Hi, Henry, I'm 71 and I bring you good news and bad. As you get older you'll find you'll slow down naturally. The bad news is that you'll find many new ways to forget things!
I remember going to see the exposed village of Mardale during the drought of 1984, long queue of cars along the valley. The same time the water company ran water via large pipes from Windermere (along the A592) to re route it via the river systems to supply Manchester.
Hi Henry. Just want to say thank you for bringing the lake district to my screen, I could not walk those hills but you bring them to us to enjoy. In your own words they are "top drawer" 👌🙂
Oh, Henry, I just started laughing when you realized the batteries were back home! I’ve done this so many times I think I’m going bonkers. Nothing more aggravating when this old man hikes two or three miles only to set up the camera on the tripod, get the image all framed up in my head and then realizes the camera won’t turn on. I’ve also gone out only to realize that I haven’t charged the battery(ies) in the bag. So sorry, man, but this happens to all of us. Have followed your channel for years and really enjoy waking up on Friday morning to see your next adventure. Keep on keepin’ on!
Your face when you realised the battery wasn't in the camera... 😂 may be you could prepare a tick list. I do . Bag ready the night before, and I check the list in the morning again. Beautiful views... nice video as always Mr T 😊
Life is full of challenges and the key to getting through them is finding the enjoyment and positives. Always look for the positive good things. Thanks for the inspirations.
Would love to see you do Blencathra. Went up there one day in brilliant sunshine and when we got to the top it was thick snow and zero visibility. Quite scary trying to find the way back down, and Striding Edge was incredible
Thanks Henry for sharing your experience...great hike & beautiful scenery.... slowing down is a natural process as you get older..I am 81 & used to be like you with plenty of energy and enthusiasm but now I accept my age as part of the ageing process....I use a simple checklist for my photography outings... enjoyed your video... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Thank you for the videos, you take me to places I can no longer get to and your enthusiasm is catching. On forgetfulness I bought a new DSLR just before a lunar eclipse, so I set it up in the garden with the intervalometer running to get a nice sequence, errrm, when I stopped to adjust the cameras position I realised I’d been “shooting without card” I’d forgotten my golden rule to switch this function off, it’s normally the first thing I do with a new camera, the card was in-the reader on my computer..doh! So I reinserted and carried on from there, lesson learnt.🤣🤣
@henryturner, I bumped into a way to not-have the battery or disk problem. Just before you walk out the door, turn on your camera, and that way you'll immediately know if you don't have a battery/enough battery and/or a missing disk in it. I hadn't touched my gear in a while, grabbed it quick and did this today, and it helped.
My brother is very fast and I am much slower. We both get where we’re going. As long as you go your speed and enjoy the journey, I think you’ll be great. Glad you were able to get some shots with your phone. The shots you get with your vlog videos are gorgeous, so even if you don’t get any photos not everything is ruined. You got a great hike and great vlog video.
Fun adventure! I have 4 camera batteries in 2 battery holders! I always leave a pair of batteries in my bag while charging the other 2. This way I never leave home without them!!!!! Thanks for taking me along!
That looks an exciting way up High Street. I've done it a few times from Kentmere and Brothers Water but that looks a very pleasant ridge walk. (71, two artificial knees and still climbing, when I'm not kayaking).
I got your recent newsletter, lamented the short notice on the workshop - I'm in the US - and then had an attack of common sense as I remembered my 65 year old knees cannot handle mountain-goating all over challenging terrain the way you do. Wishing you a sold out attendance and all success.
Little trick I use to ensure fully charged battery, leave the battery door open and unlatch whenever battery is placed on charger. You live in an amazing landscape heaven and do an amazing job capturing it for us to enjoy.
YES!!! I call it business mode. I push myself to finish the job until I have killed every ounce of joy I could have had in the task, leaving only the self-made stress. now I'm older and can talk myself through the relaxing and enjoying parts so I don't miss them. soooo much more enjoyable. it's in our nature, BUT, we can adapt.
Henry - enjoy the fast pace now. I was like that most of my life until I retired and realized there was no hurry to get somewhere anymore! At 70 I've simply reset my goals to match reality of what I'm capable of and for the rest - well that's where I live vicariously through your RUclips channel! By the way, when I was in the military we had checklists for everything- they've saved my travels more than once. Keep up the great videos.
Wow, thank you for sharing the absolutely jaw dropping views. Blee Water in particular looks awesome. Sounds like the workshops could prove very popular! Well done forging ahead with those and hope both days are suitably epic. Goes without saying, keep being you, it's why all of us love joining you on these wonderful videos.
Hey, we've all been there (at least I have), I've forgotten a card, a battery, or even a camera. Even though you were batteryless, this turned out to be one of my favorite videos. What amazing views! You used what you had with you, and it was fantastic. Here I am, sitting at home, recovering from a mild case of COVID-19, and you made my day! Thanks, friend.
Very similar here. I, too, tend to move on to the next subject and have to constantly remind myself to slow down and take it all in. Good to hear I'm not alone there.
I'm always hurrying.... Because I am always last minute..... 😂 I'm also quite forgetful, took the wrong wire for my star tracker, when it was a rare clear night, so had to do stacking, have forgotten batteries too...... Maybe a tick list for gear to do before the forgetful ones of us could use before leaving the house 😂 When you were walking up rough crag, there were some quite narrow bits, I would have been terrified, you're brave, going over all those narrow bits....... I'd be crawling, especially when you were near the summit..... Gave me shivers just looking at how narrow those paths are..... One slip.... You're brave.
Great video again, even without your main camera. But hey, you could always create a checklist like pilots have to go through before they take of their passenger jets.
Weve all been there Henry, trecked up top of a hiil, got all set up and composed a shot on tripod, and then camera says "memory card full" . You got some belters with the mobile and drone so all was not lost Looked a cracking days hike, thanks for sharing yet again.
Henry, I would say "You complete Wally!" But in fairness it's something I'd do too! I have even been known to go one better than that and forget my camera altogether! 🤣🤣I've got (courtesy of my wife) a check-list of everything I'm 'supposed' to have with me, pinned to the hallway door! Changing the subject ever-so-slightly, I do think that one of the reasons people watch your videos, subscribe to your channel and do your workshops and stuff, is precisely because you show them the gratitude for that.
Excellent video about how not to forget things and how to make the best of the situation. And well done with the acting, I never suspected that you did it on purpose. That must have taken loads of planning and many takes. 😅😂😂😂😂
Henry, I enjoy your videos, the locations, and your willingness to share your experiences and insights. It may be time to add some sort of “To Do” list to your phone so you can have a checklist if for no other reason than to double check before you head out. I find these quite useful because we are all going in too many directions these days.
@@MummaBear In Kentucky, they were built by farmers between the later 1700's and the late 1800's and some even up into the 20th century. Lots of flat stones in the ground that came up when farm fields were plowed plus in the stream beds. Unfortunately, in some regions, they were built by slaves but most were built by farmers since the flat rocks were plentiful and free where fencing material was not free.
Love your videos! It felt like I was on that hike with you. I forgot my batteries on a hike one time, and I won't forget that awful feeling. I'm not trying to weigh you down but being that you're up there by yourself and it's quite remote, you might consider taking a satellite phone as a backup communications device, or maybe another person and a satellite phone. First aid stuff too.
Can relate to your situation today Henry but as you demonstrated theres still an opportunity to adapt and overcome. I suppose having a lesser burden in terms of the photography it hopefully gave you a release to enjoy the hike
I took a group of Nigerian student visitors up that same route a couple of years ago then back down by Small Water. They thoroughly enjoyed the adventure even though it was a long day coming from Scotland. They couldn't believe the Romans had been up there 2000 years ago. :-)
Cheers Henry, it’s Sean in Atlanta! Trust me brother, if I lived on the right side of the pond, I would come to every single outing you set up! I always love your videos and especially the locations you select and you know how much I am a fan of your energy level! Thanks for another wonderful outing and are those your leather Z boots you were talking about? Sean
Thanks Sean!! Yes it is the Zamberlan boots still, they have maybe deteriorated a little quicker than I would have liked, even with trying my best to look after them
@@HenryTurnerphoto wow, I am shocked! I looked at those and couldn’t decide between your boots and the Lowa Camino GTX. I chose the Lowa and now I’m glad I did! I’m sorry to hear that!
Hi Henry, another grand day out and a good catch even though you were short of an en-el15. If I can share a trick I learnt ... take one photo before you set off, as it checks you've got not only the battery in the camera, an SD card, a lens, but also the camera ! .. not that i'd ever forget anything obvious, yeah right! Don't feel like slowing down, age will do that for you eventually, so sieze the day while you can! Thanks for sharing once again ... and all the best with the sessions in Wales
Henry, buddy. Don't thank us. Your adventures and your photographybisnwhybwe watch. We should thank you for all the journeys and hikes. Always watch!!!
Great vid of a truly classic route up a classic fell👍🏻. Boots wise, have you had a look at the Keen range? They are known to have a wider fit. Keep up the great adventures H😁
Hi Henry, As always your honesty and enthusiasm are so refreshing in these days of meaningless blah blah. Pity you forgot the batteries of course I never forget anything😂😂😂
My approach to avoid forgetting things has been, "a place for everything and everything in its place." Otherwise I forget stuff. When gear has a "home" in a bag, case, whatever, all I have to do is grab that bag, case, etc. Yes, by not "customizing" how I pack for every outing, I might not always have the absolute minimum weight but I rarely forget stuff. Oh man, that's the kiss of death now ("I rarely forget stuff")... 🙄
Spectacular scenery Henry you still captured it perfectly with out the camera. Don’t forget your battery next time, I’ve taken mine with no charge in 😂 looking forward to next weeks video 😍
We have all done it matey, I've done it twice but fortunately I wasn't that far from home both times so was able to drive back and get them.....I'd hate to be somewhere as glorious as the Lakes though and forget them! lol
Hi Henry, I've spent many happy hours watching you hike around gorgeous countryside, jealous because my knees might not be up to it now. Love your landscape shots and the info that you give. Can I please ask 1 little thing, can you say occasionally how long the total hike is. Keep up the excellent work and stay safe.
7:35 that background looks sweet. Two walls and lake with the sticky out bit and the mountains. So many layers! Silly question: can you run your camera of a powerbank without the battery in its socket?
Hey Henry.. I feel for ya Mate. I went to a Cowboy Rodeo Event here in th estates and had my Camera and Batteries.. but grabbed my backup Canon R6II and discovered the batteries were not Charged. I said no worries I have extra batteries but then discovered they were Dead. I was only able to photograph 1/3 the event. and I was done. As I left my Charger at home UGGGGH. I later bought spare charger to keep in bag.
I make sure i charge all my million batteries on a Thursday, pack my bag Friday night ready for my adventures on a weekend but i usually forget my clip on mic…so now i make sure i trip over it prior to me leaving the house…!! Most of the time i forget my flask too…!!!
Top drawer hike Henry mate. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the ascent and it's stunning panoramic views. Would love to have half your energy to tackle some of the Lake District peaks. Ps Did you ever stop and wonder how long it must have taken them to build all those miles upon miles of dry stone walls. Look forward to more videos like this one and get a pack list made so you can tick off everything required for your trip so you don't forget things like batteries. 🏴🥃
Having done the same once before, I then used a tip another snapper gave me: When you take the battery out to charge, never shut the battery door on your camera until you've put a charged battery back in. Same goes for SD cards. That way, you know when you put the camera in the bag that if the door is open, you need a battery. Works for me.
Always fun to watch your videos, not always sure if they are hiking videos or photography videos 😀, but you do show some great photographs. It’s nice that it isn’t just like all the others. Sometimes if I only have my phone, I use the Lightroom app camera so that I can edit the photos afterwards (I don’t really enjoy doing that on the phone). Looking forward to the next!
Another fantastic video Henry. I usually have the batteries but sometimes almost out of charge. I think people underestimate the power of the mobile phone camera . Keep up the great Wainwright series you are creating
Batteries, OOPS!! I always charge my batteries up as soon as I get back, and I always have a fully charged one left in my camera. Simple, but avoids that problem. Lovely images, and I really liked the drone shot. Out of interest, do you use any filters on your drone? I now have a mini 4 pro, and normally have a polariser on. My drone images are not great yet, but are improving, as are my piloting skills. Have a great weekend.
You need a checklist for gear. 😊. Wonder if Blea Tarn was created when a comet rock crashed. Those trails must be a thousand or more years old. A Roman road - makes sense.
It's called ADHD. I have it. I can't sit still. The pro for me is that I am always on time to places and no one ever has to wait for me. The con to is that I at times am in too much of a hurry and forget things or miss steps to things. Memory cards, batteries, etc, I have forgotten.
This is why I have multiple batteries, so there’s always one charged in the camera. Never mind Henry, it’s not the end of the world. Add another Wainwright to the list. 68/214 🇦🇺
As soon as you said you forgot something important I was thinking batteries or memory card. Personally I did it when I went to Dovedale in the Peak District. You still got some beauties though Henry!
Yes that's me Henry the number of times i have forgot a battery has to be in double figures, another great video, and brilliant images with phone camera, i wish i was a lot younger than i am so i could get to all the great places you have visited in the lakes, thanks again for the amazing content
Tip people's... I have a checklist that actually 6 inside my bag.And it's just one that I can use with a whiteboard marker. It's just a piece of paper That has been laminated... I'm basically it has everything from lenses camera batteries.Sd card tripod on the list. Before I leave for a big sheet I take everything on the list. It. Takes a couple of minutes to check. Check list on a laminated cars. Try some mindfulness...slow down. It does come with age too. I used to rush not now!
@@HenryTurnerphoto it's so easy to do and once you've got that checklist process in your bag you will never forget anything again in terms of the mindfulness. I do it in my day job lot so it transcends into my Photography.
I love watching you tramp all over the Lake District but it saddens me to know I’ll never experience it myself again. My legs just can’t take it anymore :(
My back yard Henry. Have been round those hills at least two hundred times since moving to Shap 3 years ago. Know it very very well and as a local, I can tell you, it pisses down most days!
Henry make yourself a laminated check list and keep in your bag to check against as you load gear into it. I have one for golf but not photography worst mistake taking out 2 flat battereies 😢
At 5:09 that isn’t the footpath. It’s not on the map. It just another horrible scar on the landscape that shouldn’t be there. And unfortunately these scars are only getting worse.
Henry there's an old saying here in the United States. I'd forget my head if it wasn't attached. I've been that way my entire life. It's not that I have a bad memory. I just get in a hurry and forget rthings. Now that I'm in my 60s I've gotten even worse at remembering to do things. But as I've gotten older I've learned to compensate for my forgetfulness. For instance anytime I go to the store with intention of buying 4 or more items I automatically make a list. Because I know my memory will only allow me to store 3 items up there. 4 or more and I'm going to get home without something. Usually it's the one thing I did not want to forget. I own 4 cameras. It's very easy to get things mixed up, and forget to put something in my bag, or put the wrong item in the wrong bag. So I make a habit of having a separate bag for each camera. As for batteries, as soon as I get back from shooting photos I stick them in my charger. I leave my camera bag sitting on the floor next to my battery charger with the side pouch unzipped to remind me to store my freshly charged batteries.
Just out of interest, when using your iPhone do you just use the standard camera or is there a manual mode? I use Samsung which has a pro mode where you can shoot in RAW though I've never tried to really edit a photo, just wondering if use similar? Great vid as always, love the energy, just wish I had the fitness to get anywhere near the top of a fell like that.
The Pro mode on the Samsung is interesting. Only used it once so far, but it does give you a better level of control over exposure etc, and having Light Room on the phone also allows you to edit photos easily on the move. Not sure how good the quality is when using Raw compared to a DSLR

We have all done it matey, I've done it twice but fortunately I wasn't that far from home both times so was able to drive back and get them.....I'd hate to be somewhere as glorious as the Lakes though and forget them! lol
Have a printed list with all the necessary items and cross off when packing
Hi Henry, I've spent many happy hours watching you hike around gorgeous countryside, jealous because my knees might not be up to it now. Love your landscape shots and the info that you give. Can I please ask 1 little thing, can you say occasionally how long the total hike is. Keep up the excellent work and stay safe.
Thanks! Yes I will try to remember that 👍🏻
Even without a battery you still made it all happen. Stay forever young Henry!
7:35 that background looks sweet. Two walls and lake with the sticky out bit and the mountains. So many layers!
Silly question: can you run your camera of a powerbank without the battery in its socket?
Not a silly question mate! I don’t think you can, with the Z7 at least 👍🏻
Beautiful nature once again, great video. Love the panorama you took with your phone!
Thank you very much!
You can clearly see the old volcano with the drain footage 👍
I make sure i charge all my million batteries on a Thursday, pack my bag Friday night ready for my adventures on a weekend but i usually forget my clip on mic…so now i make sure i trip over it prior to me leaving the house…!! Most of the time i forget my flask too…!!!
A quality walk, great scenery, thanks for taking us.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you mate
😂 Batteries & memory cards...bane of my photography life. Plus the mounting plate from my tripod. Good on ya for embracing your forgetfulness.
Thanks! Haha yes I always think that, same as some of the paths too
Having done the same once before, I then used a tip another snapper gave me: When you take the battery out to charge, never shut the battery door on your camera until you've put a charged battery back in. Same goes for SD cards. That way, you know when you put the camera in the bag that if the door is open, you need a battery. Works for me.
Love that
Always fun to watch your videos, not always sure if they are hiking videos or photography videos 😀, but you do show some great photographs.
Thank you! I have never used filters on my drones 👍🏻
You need a checklist for gear. 😊. Wonder if Blea Tarn was created when a comet rock crashed. Those trails must be a thousand or more years old. A Roman road - makes sense.
Best one for months 😊 brilliant
Thanks a lot 😊
Thank you!!
Yes that's me Henry the number of times i have forgot a battery has to be in double figures, another great video, and brilliant images with phone camera, i wish i was a lot younger than i am so i could get to all the great places you have visited in the lakes, thanks again for the amazing content
Thanks for watching mate
What a treat! 40 minutes . Thanks Henry.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!!
Been there, done that! (Forgotten the batteries! 😉)
Yeah I need to invest more time in mindfulness! And great tip with the laminated checklist
My legs just can’t take it anymore :(
Same boat mate, I used to hike all over North Wales, now I am restricted to mostly roadside photography 😒
Just curious, because I haven't seen it anywhere. What are you filming the vlogs on as you're walking and talking into the camera?
It’s the DJI Action 4 👍🏻👍🏻
@@HenryTurnerphoto thanks!
My back yard Henry. Have been round those hills at least two hundred times since moving to Shap 3 years ago. Know it very very well and as a local, I can tell you, it pisses down most days!
Also, in a pinch I have used my drone as a handheld camera before.
Wow, you have the best names for locations!
They are fantastic aren’t they?!
@@HenryTurnerphoto just the names are exciting hahaha. The photos and video are amazing too.
Oh and a piece of advice…. Pack your batteries!
:-)
Henry make yourself a laminated check list and keep in your bag to check against as you load gear into it. I have one for golf but not photography worst mistake taking out 2 flat battereies 😢
Sometimes I think I've captured some great shots with my phone, but yea I prefer the Z7 II. Great shots though Henry.
Thanks very much!!
At 5:09 that isn’t the footpath. It’s not on the map. It just another horrible scar on the landscape that shouldn’t be there. And unfortunately these scars are only getting worse.
Much more energy than myself. Carry on. 👍🥂
Beautiful.. Man i need to do aome hiking like this..
You should!
It did happened to me aswell oneday.
Great video and ive left without my camera bag before lol
Just out of interest, when using your iPhone do you just use the standard camera or is there a manual mode? I use Samsung which has a pro mode where you can shoot in RAW though I've never tried to really edit a photo, just wondering if use similar? Great vid as always, love the energy, just wish I had the fitness to get anywhere near the top of a fell like that.
I just used the standard mode but I should definitely use an app like Lightroom Mobile or something
The Pro mode on the Samsung is interesting. Only used it once so far, but it does give you a better level of control over exposure etc, and having Light Room on the phone also allows you to edit photos easily on the move. Not sure how good the quality is when using Raw compared to a DSLR
I'm not very good at taking it slow either.
Hi mate what’s the tripod you use
awesome as always young man approximately how long did I take you ?
Thanks a lot! I think this was probably 5ish hours there and back. But of course plenty of stopping and buts of filming etc 👍🏻
@@HenryTurnerphoto thanks for the fast reply I will also be stopping plenty not to film it’s cos am an 18st beer monkey not as fit as I used to be lol
Enjoyed that walk. Thanks Henry.
And the history lesson.
Thanks 👍
Today’s lesson is: The magic is not in the camera but the eye of the creator. Well done making it all work 🙌👍😎
Thank you so much 😀
We've got everything, tuna sarnies and allsorts lol, well done mate, you took that better than what I would have
He he. That can happen. Nice hike anyway 👍🙂
