ill play, i like the starlings fighting best, it's crisp clear & action packed. it also gives me new insight into ground level photography, thanks for that
Hi Roger, I liked all of the images, but here are my 3 I liked best 3. Green Woodpecker 2. Wastwater 1. Starlings Fighting This was a great video and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it. 👍📷
Thanks for another great video Richard mine was also the starlings. The work you put in to that shop makes it deserving and worthwhile. It’s okay having top-class equipment you need to put the effort in great shorts do not just happened. My150 to 400 lens should be here within the next couple of weeks could’ve got it earlier but I bought it from a local independent shop in Cambridge. Watching yourself David Tipling Mike Lane inspires me give me new ideas so thanks for that.
Thanks for the kind comment Thomas. You will love the 150-400mm lens. Glad you enjoy the videos. Mike Lane can knock videos out quicker than I do. I dont know how he does it !
I liked your #3 choice the most. Perhaps it because there is seldom this much fog where I live in the US. Thanks for sharing your photos as they are wonderful.
Thank you for sharing all of your photographs, tips and techniques again this year. Personally, I would reverse the order of your top 3 but all excellent images. Must say, I am still very envious of you having your own bit of woodland - you have certainly made the best of it I think.
Thanks for the kind comments Alan, and for watching my videos over the year. Its much appreciated. I have some new videos coming up in a couple of weeks.
I keep looking at that image Roger and the more I look at it the more impressed I become. Despite being fascinated by birds, we rarely saw a cuckoo on a post (we usually saw their rather clumsy and undulating flight between trees), let alone a cock and hen mating AND facing the camera. A rare, astonishing and unique photo if ever I saw one! Again well done done Roger👌
@@Henry30065 Thanks Henry. It was just one of those very rare occasions when everything just came together perfectly. The chap who took us there said that you could probably go 100 times, and still not be lucky enough to get that. The previous year it had happened but they had mated facing away from the hide.
For what it is worth, had I been fortunate enough to have captured the images you showed Roger, my choices would have been: 3rd place the Green Woodpecker next to the Apple; 2nd place, the bickering Kestrel and the Jay; 1st place, the stunning and unique photo of the mating Cuckoos on the fence post. The Cuckoo image has convinced me to subscribe to your channel. All the best Roger. Henry
I love the short with the fog, it is so atmospheric. At number two would be the first photograph of the green woodpecker - I love the expression on the bird’s face. I really like your hide and that you can sit at a low level
Marvellous series of images Roger, thank you for posting. The starling shot is my favourite that low level really adds an additional special element to the action captured. The mating cuckoo’s is also a spectacular image given that the stars aligned it’s also worthy of number 1. I also like the Jay and Kestrel shot as I’m a sucker for species interactions!!. The Naddel valley shot is magical, however I slightly prefer the Crummock water shot as you really have captured the essence of the Lake District in Autumn. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and images in the New Year, thank you once again for the work and knowledge that you have so kindly shared 👍
Thanks for comment. Its much appreciated. The Kestrel and jay shot seems to have gone down well. Lots of poeple have this in the first three. Best wishes for 2024.
Nice one Roger, I saw you at Tyneside over 20 years ago and recognise you as a brilliant passionate photographer, well done , hope to see you in the future. 😉
Thank you John for the very kind comment. 20 years ago ? Wow ! My photography must have impressed you if you remember me from that far back. Not even sure if I had gone digtal that long ago ! Best wishes for 2024. P.S. Do you use Olympus ?
My picks are; #1 Starlings fighting, #2 Crummock Water, #3 Kestrel and Jay. After picking the Starlings at number one the two landscapes, Kestrel, and Cuckoos were almost a toss-up. Thanks for posting the videos as I always learn something from them.
Excellent set of images. Hope to see more videos from You in 2024. I love the details You share around your images. The best shot is always the one closest to your heart and is very subjective. Quite liked all of them 🙂
The sound of the Cuckoo is such a rare thing these days, sadly I may go for a couple of years in between hearing them. I remember as a 10 year old finding a baby Cuckoo doing what they do best in a Blackbird nest, that sighting has never left me. Your shot really is something else. The Starling is a wonderful shot, an everyday bird captured showing a unique pose.
Thanks for the vey kind comment. The Cuckoo shot was rather special, but I decided to have one of my `own set up` shots as my favourite. Best wishes for 2024.
A lovely collection hard choice but I would easily go with the Cuckoo mating. Looks like you got a fantastic hide setup as well. Happy New year look forward to see many more.
Thanks for the very kind comment. It`s much appreciated. I have ideas for more video`s for 2024, so I will be uploading new material every few weeks. Best wishes for 2024.
I congratulate you on this wonderful work. I think that all the pictures are wonderful and special in their own way. From a photographer's perspective, I would probably choose the Starling as the best shot. However, with a little luck and a lot of perseverance, I'm very sure you would most certainly be able to take all of the pictures (or very similar) ones again - except for the picture Cuckoo´s mating. It is probably only possible to see a similar scene in front of the lens once in a photographer's life - and then being able to capture them so perfectly. As a nature lover and observer, I once had the same luck with a couple of Barn Swallows (but without a camera). This Scene lasted maybe 2 seconds and for me, years later, it is still one of the most special observations I was able to make. So, I am very happy for you and can only congratulate. Thank you for sharing it and best wishes for 2024 :-)
Thanks for the very kind comment. Its much appreciated. I agree the Cuckoo`s was a `once in a lifetime` shot, and I was lucky to be able to capture it. If you like barn Swallows, you may like this video. ruclips.net/video/IeSdSl_tggI/видео.html I have seen Swallows mating at this location. Best wishes for 2024.
Hi Roger; My top 3 are: #1: Cuckoos fighting - should be entered into some wildlife photo competitions #2: Green Woodpecker - because I am not familiar with this beautiful species, and love the ground-level shot #3 - Crummock Water - love the fall colors and dynamic range. Cheers for 2024, Larry M
A fabulous series of images Roger. I have to say my personal favourite is the Cuckoos mating. As you say, a rare shot and I was so grateful to have been there to see this
What a lovely selection of images. My personal favourite is the woodpecker. I have just bought an OM1, to use in Spain where we have a holiday house. I have an R5 here. I’m very impressive with it so far
Thank you for commenting. Its always appreciated. It was quite difficult to decide which should be my favourite. AS much as I loved the Cuckoo shot, I felt that as it was a `paid for hide`, and someone elses set up, I should put it second. Best wishes for 2024.
Thanks for the kind comment Joe. I always try to include as much info about how I take the pictures. Although some photographer are quite secretive about how they take the pictures, I dont personally see the point in that. Best wishes for 2024.
Beautiful pictures - I like all of theme. My favorite is no. 3 with the landscape in the mist. Even it was probably the most easiest one to take. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Switzerland
All in either form are produced very well, love them all, Birds in fight are the stand out here, even with use of the ProCap in camera. Starling, Kestrel and Cuckoo is the top 3. Thanks for sharing Roger.
Thanks very much for commenting. The Kestrel and Jay shot seems to be getting a lot of votes. I very nearly put it in the top three. Maybe I should have. Best wishes for 2024.
Cheers for the comment Nick. I liked both the Castlerigg shots, but of the two, the telephoto just piped it for me. Hope to bump into you at Welney sometime next year. 🤞 All the best for 2024.
Thanks for the very kind comment Allen. I well remember the excitment I felt when I looked on the back screen of the OM1, and saw that frame. Best wishes for 2024
Fabulous set of images Roger and good that they are a mixed bunch showing your skills with both wildlife and landscape photography. For me its the fighting Starlings, that low down level perspective clearly showing the confrontation and the fact that you took it in your own self-made and sited hide, Closely followed by the "Mist in the Naddal valley.
Cheers Keith. Thanks for commenting. Its much apprciated. Glad you agree with me about the Starlings. The Cuckoo`s shot is more rare, , but it was not my set up. Hope your keeping well. All the best for 2024.
Difficult Roger but on balance I think the starlings fighting is my favourite although the cuckoos mating comes a very close second. Thanks for all your videos in 2023 and all the useful hints and tips in them.
All of them are excellent. I can see why you hav chosen this one. I am most impressed of the Cuckoos mating. I havne never been so near them here in Norway. It is a pleasure to follow your channel. I look forward to a new year from you.
Thank you for the very kind comment. The Cuckoo`s mating was a fantastic experience. You can ahave all the right equipment, but with nature, you will often need that little bit of luck, as I certainly had on this occassion. Best wishes for 2024.
Thanks for commenting. The Kestrel and Jay shot seems to have been getting lots of mentions. It was a shot I seriously considered as one of my top three. Best wishes for 2024.
Hello Roger, first of all, wonderful shots, all of them. However, if I were to pick just three - solely considering how aesthetically pleasing each photo is, the amount of effort put in nothwithstanding - I would have to go with 1) cuckoos mating - the rareness of the scene captured + the silky smooth, blurry background are simply no match; 2) Starlings fighting - even more dynamic than the first one although not that interesting a scene, in my view, also the background seems messier just a tad; 3) since my second life passion (first chronologically) - birdwatcher lubuski here, this is my 2nd channel - apart from birds is mountains, at least 1 of those splendid landscape shots had to make it to the podium and I find the autumn, slightly side-lit one with the majestic, beautifully-lit (the low autumn sun terrifically 'sculpted' the terrain of the rocky summit, clearly delineating the deep gullies veiled in dark shadows, from the well lit pillars in between them - such shot would not be possible e.g. in the summer at this time of day) mountain as the main subcjet (Crommock water was it?) the most easy on the eye. Merry Christmas season and a Happy upcoming New Year, Roger! All the best!
Thanks you for the very kind comment. Its very much appreciated. The Cuckoo`s mating was indeed my first choice, but because I had not set it up myself, I felt it was unfair to have it as first. Best wishes for 2024.
Roger: Another excellent video. The detail you provide concerning settings, shooting technique and printing ability is appreciated. Have a wonderful holiday season! I look forward to your videos in 2024. PJI
Thank you for a very kind comment Paul. I always try to give as much information as possible. Some photographers are a bit secretive about how they take their pictures, but I dont see the point in that. Best wishes for 2024.
Nr1 Fighting starlings nr2 Mating cuckos and nr3 the long ND shot with the tree. Lookin forward to new video's next year full of tricks and tips I've learned a lot from! All the best from Norway! 🙂
All the pictures were exceptionally good but my three were, the Starlings, the Woodpecker in flight and the Curlew in flight. Incidentally all action shots. Strong runners up being the early morning mist and the mating Cuckoos. Looking forward to some more videos in 2024 and I would like to wish you a very a Happy Christmas.
Thanks for the kind comment Eljay. Glad you liked it. It was quite a difficult choice, and to be honest, there were more than three that I felt should have been in the final running. Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2024.
It'd be very difficult to pick the best images, they're all excellent. If someone held a gun to my head to choose top three I'd agree with the Starlings as number one; although a common bird and regularly fighting, your action shot is superb and their plumage is so striking and photogenic which you've captured brilliantly. The Cuckoo shot is of course a contender mainly due to the fact it is a once in a lifetime shot, but I rather like the singing Skylark, so that'd be a hard choice. As for the landscape, I prefer the Crummock Water one over the Naddel Valley mist shot; the Autumn colours are fantastic (so often people manage to make Autumn colours way ott in their pictures) and the reflections on the water are fantastic. So I'd say 1) Starlings Fighting 2) Skylark Singing 3) Crummock Water I tend to judge pictures by which I'd most like hanging on my wall...it's very different judging your own work as memories go with the shots too, which will have an influence 😊
Thanks for the kind comment mark. As you say, the memories that go with the shots will always influence the decision. When I took the Cuckoo shot, I thought at the time -` I will not take a better shot this year`. I still think its probably the best shot, just because of the rareness of the image. Good shots of Cuckoo`s mating are not very common. The fact that I had not done any of the `ground work` for the shot, influenced my decision. The Starlings were all my own work. The Skylark is a lovely shot, but was reasonably easy to take. The Crummock Water shot was another fairly easy shot, although the colours and the refelection were so nice , I had to include it. Once again, thanks for commenting, and best wishes for 2024.
Hi Roger, Im glad I found you somehow in this platform. I think the fight of the starlings should have been higher on this list but all the other shots were excellent. Merry Christmas! Benedek from Hungary
Thank you for the very kind comment Benedek. Glad you liked the channel. I have new videos planned for 2024, so look out for new postings. Best wishes to Hungary from the UK for 2024.
Roger, loved seeing all these in review! That one of Wastwater is probably my favorite, though all your landscape photos were phenomenal! Love your channel..... your calm demeanor and pleasant, simple approach to videos sure is more my speed than most of what I see on RUclips.
Hi Roger… an excellent series of shots and I fully agree with your final three although the Jay Kestrel is also fantastic I think the Starlings just pipped it for first place… the Cuckoos are incredible. Love watching your vids as I like you have the same gear which I’ve had since the 150-400 was released. The combination of this lens with the 1.4x and the OM1 is simply the best. Merry Christmas… Paul
Cheers Paul. Glad you agreed with my selection, although it is all a bit subjective. Judging by the comments, it appears the Kestrel and Jay shot has been well recieved. I will be bringing out some new videos in the new year. All the best for 2024.
@@rogerhance5883 be interesting to see if there is a difference as that lens is incredible already although I have heard that the second production was not made in Japan and people say it’s not as good as the first release… which I have luckily
What a fabulous set of images and the squabbling starlings is my number 1 but find it impossible to choose 2nd and 3rd place. They are all stunning. Thank you for all your posts throughout 2023 and for sharing your wealth of knowledge. Happy New Year Roger and I'm already looking forward to enjoying more of your videos in 2024.
Alison, thats really kind of you to say you enjoy the videos. So glad you enjoy them and find them helpful. Best wishes for 2024, and there are new videos coming in the new year.
Cheers Gary. To be honest, I very nearly included the Kestrel and Jay in the final three. Thanks for the support over the year, and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
A super retrospective Roger and Merry Christmas to you on this fine day. It’s so difficult to choose from such quality images and we’ll all have a slightly different view on which is exactly best, but for me I’d go for the GSW in flight, the Starlings fighting and the Cuckoo’s. I can understand exactly why you’d choose the Starlings, but as an independent assessor I’d go for the Cuckoo’s. Wishing you a great 2024 and I’m sure everyone’s looking forward to seeing more fabulous videos.😀
Thanks for commenting David. I very nearly put the Woodpecker in flight in as one of my three favourites. Thanks for all the kind comments on my videos. They are very much appreciated. I do have some new materail for 2024. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Wonderful shots Roger. Merry Christmas 🎄! What a productive year! I was wondering if you hire your hide and/or provide tuition on site? Have a great 2024!🎉
Thanks Andre for the kind comment. Unfortunately, I dont hire the hide out. Its on private land, and I am not sure the owner would approve. If it was my own land, I possibly would. Best wishes for 2024.
Great lot of shots Roger, amazing choices. I think the Cookoo shot definitely deserves to be in the top 3. Love the curlew shot and then its between the woodpecker and feildfare shot for me. Both equally beautiful! Merry Christmas Roger, thanks for all the incredible photography videos and shots this year. ❤️
ill play, i like the starlings fighting best, it's crisp clear & action packed. it also gives me new insight into ground level photography, thanks for that
Thanks for commenting. The Starlings is one of my best shots.
Hi Roger, I liked all of the images, but here are my 3 I liked best
3. Green Woodpecker
2. Wastwater
1. Starlings Fighting
This was a great video and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it. 👍📷

Definitely the cuckoos. I was born and raised a hill farm and was never fortunate enough to see such a rare sight. Well done Roger!

I would agree with you rating for 1&2, for the third its difficult, between the mist or the Kerstel with the Jay.
Thanks for commenting. I agree the 3rd place shot is difficult. I intitially went for the Kestrel and Jay.

Thank for the kind comments Brain. Glad you liked the images. Best wishes for 2024.

Thanks for commenting Sue. Good choice. Best wishes for 2024.

Thank you for the very kind comment. The Cuckoo`s mating was a fantastic experience. You can ahave all the right equipment, but with nature, you will often need that little bit of luck, as I certainly had on this occassion. Best wishes for 2024.
Thanks for sharing Roger, I think your pick are the best.
Thanks Martin for the kind comment.
All great shots Roger and I have to agree with your 1st place choice. Keep up the good work. Best wishes for 2024
Thanks for the very kind comment. Best wishes to you and family for 2024.
These are all wonderful. Hard to pick a favorite, but I especially liked the avocets with the egret
Thansk for th very kind comment. Glad you liked the Avocet and Egret shot. Best wishes for 2024.
Maybe just because they 2 of my favourite birds in one image the Kestrel and the Jay but they all terrific.
Thanks for commenting. The Kestrel and Jay shot seems to have been getting lots of mentions. It was a shot I seriously considered as one of my top three. Best wishes for 2024.
i agree with you on the top 3 although they are all beautiful photos
Thanks for the very kind comment. Much appreciated. Best wishes for 2024.
Hello Roger,
first of all, wonderful shots, all of them.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video, and a good choice. Best wishes for 2024 from the Uk to Norway. 😀
Nice work mate 👍
Cheers barry. Much appreciated. Best wishes for 2024. 👍
So I'd say 1) Starlings Fighting 2) Skylark Singing 3) Crummock Water
I tend to judge pictures by which I'd most like hanging on my wall...it's very different judging your own work as memories go with the shots too, which will have an influence 😊
All of them Roger ! you have put the work in and deserve to reap the rewards. Cheers from new Zealand
Thanks very much Royce for the very kind comment. Best wishes for Christmas and 2024.
Thank for the kind comment. I wonder if my `calmness` need a bit more life injected into it. Glad you liked the pictures. best wishes for 2024.
Agreed with you Roger, although all the Images were superb, Happy Christmas and New year 2024, Colin.
Thanks for the very kind comment Andrew. Its very much appreciated.
Just wondering if you have done the firmware update for your 150-400 and if you have noticed any improvement 🤔
@@paulpugh6178 I have not done the firmware update yet. it on the list to do for 2024.
@@rogerhance5883 be interesting to see if there is a difference as that lens is incredible already although I have heard that the second production was not made in Japan and people say it’s not as good as the first release… which I have luckily
@@paulpugh6178 Thats the first I had heard about the second production not being made in Japan. I bought mine about a year ago and mine is fine.
Lovely set Roger, my top three are No3 Curlew In Flight, No2 Mist In The Valley and my favourite is Kestrel and Jay. All the best, Gary
Cheers Gary. To be honest, I very nearly included the Kestrel and Jay in the final three. Thanks for the support over the year, and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
@@rogerhance5883 More than welcome Roger and same to you for 2024.
@@TheGazzadj Cheers Gary. 👍
I agree with you Roger with one and two but for me Jay and Kesteral for number three.
Thanks for the kind comment Kev. I very nearly included the Kestrel and Jay, but I thought It would be nice to include a landscape in the final three.
The Jays fighting above the Fence, at 7:06
Thanks for commenting. That shot has been getting lots of votes in its favour. All the best for 2024.
Thanks for the very kind comment. Glad you like the pictures. I have more video`s lined up for the end of January. All the best for 2024.
@@rogerhance5883 have a great one Roger!
@@BeaktoLensphotography Same to you James.
Best shot for me is also the starlings fighting.
Glad you like the Starling shot . My favourite as well.
Cuckoos for me.
Thanks for commenting Steve. It much appreciated. It was a very close call for the Cuckoo and the Starlings. Best wishes for 2024.
@@rogerhance5883 I like both tbh but the cuckoo's mating is such a rare sight and the image is well executed hence my choice.
