Kingfisher - Speed and Resolution

  • Quietscapes - finding the peace and quiet in any landscape. Just enjoying being out in nature. Photography is the excuse, not the focus.
    The stunning Common Kingfisher. Vibrant. Radiant. Effervescent. This is probably the most colourful bird that is native to the British Isles. Actually being not all that common, a minority of people will have seen one at some point in their lives. A flash of vibrant colour, the chirping call is all you are likely to have seen. What was that? A kingfisher? Those that have seen one are unlikely to have seen them perched, or in as much detail as we were able to capture at the Wildlife Photography Hides location (www.wildlife-photography-hides.co.uk). The artificial pond here is baited to encourage the wild birds to visit regularly. For any photographers or bird watchers that are in any way time limited this is simply the best way to get almost guarantied results.
    The hides here are simply superb and are run with conservation in mind. The kingfisher hide sits adjacent to a stream, their natural habitat. The birds are therefore not dependent on the hides for their food source. Also, the message is clear to not disturb the birds during the day. Arriving at dawn and leaving at dusk and remaining in the hide as much as possible.
    The hide itself is excellent, featuring comfortable seating, heating and a toilet. The camera shelves are at water level, affording brilliant views of the diving Kingfisher and other birds in the area, such as the Egret that you see in the photos below.
    We spent a brilliant day at the hide, capturing some amazing video and photographs that show these amazing birds in stunning resolution.

    Safe to say, these would be very difficult to capture in a non controlled setting. Beautiful bird, beautiful images, but it feels a little too much like fish in a barrel doesn't it?

    • @QuietScapes
      @QuietScapes  7 месяцев назад +5

      Hi Nick! Absolutely, 100% agree. Almost impossible to do get these shots without it being a hide. Huge admiration for those photographers who have the time to invest in that. I work full time and Boy Wonder is at Uni so we have to make the most of our time. Plus, controlled or not, it's amazing to interact with these birds.
      P.s. Huge fan of yours so went a bit giggly when I saw it was you!

      Wildlife in the UK is particularly difficult as we sadly don't have the abundance and variety these days. We get excited over Red Squirrels!
      Looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts!

      @@NickPagethe hard work is in the scouting. But if you find them in s suitable location they can become relatively predictable. They will almost always land on and try a new perch if you put one out where there aren't many occurring naturally. That said I've come home empty handed more times than not. Using paid hides are a great way to get the exact shots you want and I never get bored of being so close to these birds but in my experience it's never quite as satisfying as finding and photographing ones you've scouted and found for yourself

    Some fantastic footage of a beautiful male, reminds me of my bird photography days 14 years ago , spending as much as 14 hours in a hide and coming away with nothing. That’s nature / wildlife / photography for you ,these days I have gone full circle and enjoy street photography, mainly because I’m getting old and carrying a canon 500mm f/4 became hard work on my back, keep up with the great videos, liked and subscribed.

      Just had essentially the same conversation with someone. Would love to do more wildlife but working full time means having to sacrifice the time investment that wildlife takes. Hoping to do more in 2024 though. And regarding the weight... it's horrific at times. I've recently been through the process of spending a lot of money downsizing my gear and trying to reduce the weight of my bag. Also having to become stricter with myself as to lenses go into the bag.

    • @QuietScapes
      @QuietScapes  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thankyou. It was a baited hide with a mixture of dead and live fish. The hide is next to a fresh water stream where the Kingfisher usually hunts as well, but the stream was in flood meaning that a live food supply was hard to catch for the owner of the hide, and the kingfisher!

      Oh dear, that’s a shame. Have you figured out why? Could it be vibration from lens stabilisation. Another thing could be that it might actually be the image previews in lightroom (or whatever) you are using showing a low resolution version.
