Red Squirrels - A Natural Encounter
A woodland walk on a winter day - Snaizeholme Red Squirrel woodland is a wonderful location to interact with wildlife in a beautiful calming woodland. Watching the squirrels scurrying around looking for food whilst listening to the sounds of the forest is pure soul food.
The Red Squirrel is the UK's native squirrel but it has been significantly threatened by the American Grey Squirrel which is far more aggressive. These were introduced into the UK in the 1800s by the Victorians and have thrived at a cost to the Red Squirrels which have been forced from their natural habitats. Now it's quite rare to see the Reds.
As such, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, there is a conservation area ca...

Aysgarth Falls - England's Best Waterfall?
Просмотров 1839 месяцев назад
Is this the best waterfall in England? What makes something the best anyway? Surely, as is often the case, the 'best' just happens to be the one you are stood in front of at the time. So aside from the standard algorithm friendly title, what can you expect from this video? Aysgarth Falls are a series of waterfalls and cascades in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The falls are simply beautiful...

When standing on a hillside in the centre of Nottingham with about 30 people it's very rare for there to be no sound at all other than wildlife and nature. Barber Booth - Winter Location Scouting

Not every photo trip ends in a 'portfolio' shot. In fact more often than not most photographers will walk away with images they aren't happy with. During that period of 'meh' that follows autumn and preceeds winter, photography is hard. The light is always dull, the weather usually grim, a really uninspiring time of the year. So its always good to use this time to just get out and about and see...
Clips & Clicks - Returning to Photography

After a 3 year hiatus from photography, mainly caused by creative burnout, 2023 seemed to re-ingnite the spark. I wasn't thinking to seek out photography again. I had been very actively cycling in the previous years, maybe that distraction faded and photography bubbled up to the surface again. I travelled a little in 2023, visiting new places. Some of that travel helped spur on the photography,...

Ladybower - Don't Trust The Weather Forecast

We'd planned a trip to Ladybower Reservoir in the Peak District National Park to capture the famous "Plug Holes" overflowing. The forecast was for moody and brooding skies. Sadly, that's not quite how it transpired! However, not to...
Castle Crag (Part 2) - We went up, the rain came down
Просмотров 16510 месяцев назад
Part two of our Castle Crag adventure (wander, mooch, yomp). A rainy day in the English Lake District certainly isn't rare, but wow did it rain. The walk up to Castle Crag from Rosthwaite is a steady one. 20 minutes gentle stroll down the River Derwent followed by 20-30 minutes lung busting calf shredder up to Castle Crag. The summit (if that's the word) of Castle Crag is an abandoned slate qua...

A wet but beautifully moody autumnal day spent at Castle Crag in the English Lake District. This first video (of two) is looking at Castle Crag from Cummacatta Woods (Bowder Stones car park). The autumn colours in the Lakes this year were superb, so vibrant and saturated. The water on the leaves added to the saturation and the mist in the hills added so much mood. The light was fleeting, but wh...

Oh dear, that’s a shame. Have you figured out why? Could it be vibration from lens stabilisation. Another thing could be that it might actually be the image previews in lightroom (or whatever) you are using showing a low resolution version.

Depends on water level. I visited the site twice, the first time the water level was good and made for really good shots from various locations around the falls. My second visit last year was disappointing as the water level was low and very difficult to take away any shots. Excellent video by the way.

Thank you. We’ve been a few times now and it’s always had good water levels. I did wonder how it faired after a dry spell. Also not sure if the water levels are controlled upstream. I particularly like the variety of shots that it offers and unlike a lot of our falls it isn’t overwhelmed by surrounding woodland

Hi, yes, not ideal. The stream next to the site where they usually fish, and their live bait comes from, was in flood, so live fish were in short supply. They were also baited with live fish as well, at least around 50% of the fish they took on the day were live.

    • @QuietScapes
      @QuietScapes 9 месяцев назад

Thankyou. It was a baited hide with a mixture of dead and live fish. The hide is next to a fresh water stream where the Kingfisher usually hunts as well, but the stream was in flood meaning that a live food supply was hard to catch for the owner of the hide, and the kingfisher!

@@NickPagethe hard work is in the scouting. But if you find them in s suitable location they can become relatively predictable. They will almost always land on and try a new perch if you put one out where there aren't many occurring naturally. That said I've come home empty handed more times than not. Using paid hides are a great way to get the exact shots you want and I never get bored of being so close to these birds but in my experience it's never quite as satisfying as finding and photographing ones you've scouted and found for yourself
