An Interview With Fritz Howard of Melanzana
Melanzana is a unique apparel company hidden at 10,000 feet above sea level in the small mountain town of Leadville, CO. What makes them unique is that they cut, sew, and sell their products all under the same roof. The Melanzana store serves as the production floor as well as the retail store for all of their products.
Fritz Howard, the company's founder, has prioritized in-store shopping and the retail experience over e-commerce and internet based sales. Because of this, you have to physically go to the Melanzana store to buy anything. This has made Melanzana into a high demand and difficult to acquire piece of apparel, especially for those fans of the brand living outside of Colorado

    Great video. I'm Tinman. My wife is Oliveoyl. I'm Tinman because "Blood beard" gave it to me at mm52 at Pioneer Mail Picnic area. He gave it to me because 10 months prior to starting my PCT LASH, I had a heart attack and quadruple open heart bypass. I was 61 years old in 2021. I have a channel and in my first 11.4 miles I stated the same thing. Don't just sit there, if you want to do something, get out there and do it, whether it's sewing, cooking or hiking. Life is short and for us, hiking is living life in a way that is more natural than making scrambled eggs in a cast iron pan so to speak. I'm now 65, Oliveoyl is &^%# years old. We need to hike because we love it. It's part of our lives. We want to attempt a thru hike but we need to take care of getting ready to retire type of stuff which isn't all that great. I'm also a nurse and know somethings that can take anyone out of the trail especially an older person. Thanks for making this video. Hike on!

    I'm not sure where you talk about it, but mention how the trail is very social and every hiker will meet people. I don't doubt that generally for people like you but there is a privilege in what you are saying, and that should be checked. I've been personally trying to meet people for over 15 years for friendship and since I was 18 for a relationship but because I am LGBT, older, and disabled people just don't want to talk to me. I've accepted this and it's fine. It is just me and my dog on trail and has been that way for the past 18 years that I've been distance hiking. You're privilege is that you're "normal" and people want to talk to you. You're white, cis, het, able, young, you even have a wife. When people come up to me and misgender me (insult me) at first contact and refuse to respect even something so small as my pronouns, and often resulting in hate crimes and even having people attempting to murder me... it is though this lense I experience the social aspects of society. .. Yes, i agree with you whole heartedly that we are social creatures and need people in our lives but not all of us get that privileged life. Only the "normal" people get that life. .. I was just fired from my job because my boss though i was trying to be her friend, even though i wasn't. She couldn't even talk to me about it and had the accountant fire me which took them a whole year to finally tell me. It wasn't even in the grace period to be "fired without cause", I'd worked longer than that. But that's the kind of life and harassment that LGBT people get. When you look like an old disabled lgbt you get treated like shit by everyone. So i avoid being around people as much as possible. It much much much safer to hike alone and spend my time alone.

    Can you super glue the outer edge of the Sawyer o-ring down? I use a Be Free and it's true it clogs easily. I bought a bunch on sale though. I wonder if it clogs more often that the other ones. I haven't used the Be Free in a desert.

    • @SomeDudeWalking
      @SomeDudeWalking 4 месяца назад

      I liked the BeFree but it was just hard to maintain. I don't think I'd recommend super gluing the O ring, just make sure you don't over tighten it if you end up using one. I've seen some people use a bandana over their water bottle to pre-filter big particles of stuff coming in which would definitely help but on some sources where it's more of a trickle I just never took the time to do that.

  • @ThanatosWings
    @ThanatosWings 4 месяца назад

    The social aspect is specific to where you are though. It may be like that in the USA but it is not so in Canada. I've hiked a 1000km trail near me several times and have not met anyone from any of my hikes. I've maybe said hello to 3 people and you can hike for up to 10 days and not pass another person. About 200 people max. complete the trail per year.

    • @SomeDudeWalking
      @SomeDudeWalking 4 месяца назад

      Definitely depends on the trail and section you're hiking through. The long trails in the US are a lot more popular than they were 10 years ago so you end up seeing a lot more people out there which has its pros and cons. I personally like the social aspect of things overall , but have also experienced the negative side of it as well. I met Honeybear while hiking the AT and some of my closest friends that I still make an effort to keep in contact and visit from thru-hiking.

    I disagree about the beans . Beans can be eaten cold and last a few days un- refrigerated. The trick is to lose the can weight. Use a zip lock baggie . Eat your beans , roll the baggie up and stick it in another collecting a few to reuse by washing then out. Saves money and nutritional value.

    Ramen and canned chilli. Just try it. It comes out to more than 700 calories for a meal. Canned beef stew can be 600 calories from one can. Also p38 and p51 (military can openers) You could add dehydrated veggies, mushrooms, brown gravy powder, and a little ghee to your mashed potatoes.

    I just now really enjoyed your interview and read your article as well. Husband and I are both 64 and are tentatively planning to hike the TCT (Trans Catalina Trail) in Oct/Nov 2023. I’ve gone on two backpacking trips, ever. First in 2020, just as Covid was starting, hiking 3 days, 22 miles, in the Grouse Ridge area outside Truckee, CA and came home with 7 huge blisters from a too heavy pack and shoes that were to small from swollen feet. It was great though. Two years later a second trip, new Oboz shoes, less weight, and only two blisters. Right now buying some Altra Lone Peak 6’s and have bought a new lighter weight pack. Husband and I are pretty fit, but hoping we RV’ers can also do some backpacking trips together. You are helping me to believe we can do this, thanks! I’ll probably message you with questions 😊

    • @SomeDudeWalking
      @SomeDudeWalking Год назад

      Thank you! I feel very fortunate that I was able to capture something that seems to be resonating with many people. 22 miles over 3 days is still no simple trip, that's some pretty decent coverage. I like Altras and I don't know that I will switch to anything else for a trail shoe. I am currently wearing the Olympus but I enjoyed the older Temp models as well. I used Lone Peaks the entire Appalachian Trail and I think I would recommend something with a little more cushion after the experience. You'll obviously find out for yourself, but, if you do find that the Lone Peak is a bit too minimal, you can't go wrong with one of the more cushiony models as well. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!

    At 62 I hiked much of the pct until I had to abandon due to fires and closures of all the CA National forests. I was on a flip flop going north from the halfway point then south when I had to stop. Definitely I go ultralight and i feel quite comfortable. I'm small size and have had a collapsed lung in the past with complications, so hills are more difficult. Presently I'm in France about to head out on a thru. I'm about to turn 64. At 54, I hiked the TA in NZ. There's a difference in the strength from those years to next so I'd say to not hesitate.

    Shoes tend to wear according to weight; lightweights can typically get more miles out of shoes than heavier folks. Since large-shoes have the exact same soles as small-shoes, they can be expected to get fewer miles for the same reason (bigger people tend to be heavier). Presumably, you will go through more shoes than your wife simply due to weight differences? Xero soles are guaranteed to last 5k miles, but this author found soles stopped isolating rocks and became slippery (plastic?) after a hundred-miles or less.

    Having to deal with cold and or wet hiking can be bad enough, having to eat cold mush is an extra kick in the nuts. When you are cold you need hot food otherwise you are sucking energy from your body to bring cold food to body temperature. You wouldn't eat this stuff at home would you? Bon appetit.

    Perfect final advice. My daughter when dating…they went camping/hiking for 2 weeks. It rained everyday, so they hiked, kayaked,camped in the rain. So when she came home and said she had a great trip, I said “he’s the one” and they are getting married this week.

      My wife and I met on our Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike in 2018 at Fontana Dam and hiked the whole way to Katahdin together. We got married last year before leaving for the PCT. It was the ultimate first date lol

    Do yourself a favor and get the tuna in olive oil instead of sunflower oil. Seed oils are industrial waste repurposed for human consumption, and are unhealthy (inflammatory).

    I'm 69, prepping to finish the JMT with a hike of Mt. Whitney. I've been nervous about this final leg of the journey but your interview helps me think I'll do just fine. Did they share their pack weights? Just curious how much they carry.
