Outdoor Entrepreneurs Series: An Interview with Cloud Gear

Welcome to the Outdoor Entrepreneurs Series.
A new interview series where I’ll be talking with business owners and founders of companies specific to the backpacking community. It’s an exciting time in the backpacking world and America in general as the COVID pandemic caused many to lose their jobs and start turning to their own abilities to provide for themselves and their families. This has caused a major surge in small start-ups and cottage companies. The goal of this series is to introduce some of the audience to companies and products they might not have been aware of, of course, but the main idea is to provide a look behind the curtain on what it takes to successfully operate a business. We get into topics like marketing, building out a supply chain, scaling the business, and so much more. My first guest is Mark Rushing of Cloud Gear.
Cloud Gear is based in North Texas so it meant a lot to me to get to show some support to my local community. If you’ve seen my videos before you know I try to do as much as I can to support North Texas and Texas in general as I think starting at the local level is the best way to make an impact on the world. Cloud Gear makes food bags and stuff sacks out of Dyneema which is a technical fabric created for the sailing world and recently adopted to ultralight backpacking gear. Mark is a family man and provides great insight into what it means to have a purpose driven life, we get into what it takes to stay motivated on a side gig while balancing a full-time job and family, how he prioritizes time in the backcountry, and how they use Cloud Gear as a vehicle for charity donating some of their profits of every bag to outdoor charities.
