That was an interesting discussion. As a painter and now a kit producer I can relate to so many of those situations. Thanks for the kind words. I guess we can never find a clear distinction between calling it a hobby or a business. :)

Enjoyed the episode(finally getting to watch)... and as mentioned in the other comment the Rescue text on aircraft is either a latch for external access in an emergency, or sometimes a variation is where to cut to get the people off the aircraft

This is such a huge subject, and has been going on since the hobby began. Some of it is people intentionally ripping people off. There is nothing you can do about that. Anywhere there is cash changing hands, you are going to find people like that. The rest is a mixed bag. Some, innocently blunder into promising too much. They think they can do it, and try really hard, but things happen and they never quite catch up. And they get farther and farther behind. They never turn work down and that is their downfall. They need to say no. Stop taking new orders until they dig out from what they are buried in already. But they keep thinking they will catch up until they are so far behind, they just disappear. Another problem is the sculptor/producer. They are amazing artists, but horrible businessmen. They make amazing pieces and gain a big following. But then they have too much work. Instead of buckling down and grinding out the orders they have, they spend their time making new stuff. They love the creation, and the buzz about their work but are horrible on the follow through. Either the casting, or the mailing, and especially the communication. They think they don't have time to answer people but that is the one thing that they need to do the most. All these sound like they are unique to our hobby, but I can tell you it isn't. I have been a part of several hobbies over the years, and can tell you, these people are everywhere there is something creative being produced. I have seen all this in the cosplay community. I have seen all this in the miniature gaming community. I have seen all this in the Halloween props/masks community. I have seen all this in the ren-faire community. I think the biggest issue is creative people generally tend to be horrible at time management. I know I am. Every time I start a project, I think it is going to take X amount of time. When in reality it takes like 3(X). No matter how many times I have done it, I still have this mindset! So, I don't know what the answer is. I know we need more casters in this hobby. But we need reliable casters. People who will treat it like a real job. And that means getting paid like it's a real job. So, if we are going to keep traditional casting going, it's probably going to mean some higher price tags on our kits.

Jason - sorry you are having to deal with your family issues. Cleaning out someone's house is zero fun. And trying to find accounts and all that crap is even worse. Been there, done that. Which is why I have a file on my computer with all the info. Thanks for the reminder though that I need to add the passcode for my tablet to that list. I am stoked for those Supernatural busts. I think I will wait until the next two are ready and get all 4 at once. Really excited to see Crowley. Get the Godzilla Scott. You know you want it. You only live once. Do IT! Jason is right on about how crowded the G-Fest dealer's room was. There were some places that were impassable at times and folks had to find another way around. Yes, it was that busy. And, yes, G-Fest is prominently a vinyl kaiju toy show. However, model kits are becoming more and more popular there. Great show this year. GeoS

Scott, you've NEVER lost a box in shipping? I wish I could say the same. USPS has lost a handful of mine, including one last month. I think it was FedEx that lost an enormous box full of castings and then refused to reimburse me because it wouldn't accept the receipt I proved for merchandise I manufactured. Something similar happened with UPS. I won't even try to guess how many boxes have been damaged in transit, or delayed beyond reason. That was all part of what made me give up on almost all casting for others. I was working my tail off for poor pay, in part because I started out with bad information and in part because I waited too long to stand up for myself. More than one person expected the molding and casting to be the cheap part of the production process and it wasn't their problem when I got sick, or injured my shoulder lugging molds around, or whatever. I fell behind and stayed there. But like you, Scott, I didn't take any money until the job was done.

Gotta say the points about Wonderfest at the end are mostly nonsense - there are TONS of new releases every year, more new vendors, more new customers, more new everything. And it's nobody's business, but I DO make money on WF weekend - in fact, I generally have 60% of my sales for the whole year over just one weekend.

This is not 1990's anymore.. resin was cheap no internet as distraction .. Everything was cheap back then.. Everybody wanted to cash in .. On this hobby including a quick grift scam it happens.. Especially back then.. Then you have a idiot who was awesome sculptor .. Terrible business sense.. He was from mexico .. people sent him money no questions asked.. There fault..

You guys are right in that this hobby has some great artists, but they sometimes struggle with the business aspect. And Scott is absolutely right that communication is the key! It is so frustrating and aggravating when you order a kit from someone and they do not provide frequent status updates, and also ignore and blow off emails asking for status of the order.

I've never laugh so much !! I watched the greasy strangler a few years ago and loved it !! Then only last week i got a copy of it to watch it again !!! Loved your review !! Spent ages like you repeating the lines with my girlfriend!! So glad to find another Greasy strangler fan !!!

I am never going to watch either of those movies. Greasy Strangler sounds like one of those irritating/annoying movies (much like anything with Will Ferrel). I love bad movies. Cheesy movies. Low budget movies. But dumb movies usually don't hit with me. The other one sounds like a very well made, and crafted movie, but I am just not into things that make me feel bad. At least not intentionally. Now, if I were to stumble on that movie, I would probably watch until the end. It sounds interesting. But my viewing time is so limited, I have to prioritize.

i LOVE Greasy Strangler -- so twisted, so weird, so wrong.

i HATED The Greasy Strangler. It was sickening and seemed to go on forever.

"Rescue" means there's a latch outside the aircraft to release the canopy to allow access to the pilot by ground crew in the event the pilot is incapacitated or can't release the canopy internally.

Brian, I get you on the water thing. A few years ago, I developed a leak in my basement, before the water meter. As a matter of fact, it was the shutoff valve inside the house sprung a leak. Called the water company, they told me to get a plumber. Called the plumber, he came out a week or so later. He was going to shut it off at the street, but couldn't find it. The city came out, found the valve, but it didn't work. So, he had to crimp the inside line, change the shut off, then uncrimp it. Didn't even know that was a thing as I was at work. But man, there was water everywhere. That Voltron is cool. Really thinking about picking one of those up. The price is great. That is less than what I paid for the Battle Of The Planets ship, but that also has lighting, so, about equal. Jason - those minis look great. Your gonna have so much fun painting them. I love your idea for the extra heads/hands/weapons.

Nice discussion, guys. Brian, I appreciate your review of The Greasy Strangler. I decided the movie will never be watched in my house. That kind of stupid just makes me mad. Jason, that was a nice stretch to make the connection between the 2 movies. I wonder if the model kit could be the cartoon-ish stupidity of the kills, like the dude's face just caved in after getting punched. That had a super deform feel to me.
