3 things you need to learn to cast ... ROOM, TIME, PATIENCE ... Lord knows I'm not famous for having much of any of those. But, just for the record, I know how to cast, one of my casters lived with me for 6 months while he was going through an ugly divorce, and while he was here we turned my garage into his workshop, so he taught me how while he was here. Most people don't realize that casting is as much an art form as sculpting or painting. A good caster can take a crap kit and make it perfection, just a like a bad caster can take a flawless kit and make it garbage. I saw (and learned) what it took, and it was more than I wanted to deal with, so I left it to the experts ... it's a business choice and when it worked, it worked great for a pretty decent amount of time. That being said, I find myself once again agreeing with Jason :::shudder:::, at this point in the hobby, you either have to learn to cast or learn to print. I chose the latter, as the former wasn't an option for me. With digital, I can leave my printers printing over night or while I'm at my full time gig, and just reset when I get home. Right now, I have 3 Jupiter's humming away making 1/6 scale Lucy kits, and as soon as I finish tying this, I'm off to bed, any they still keep going. There are only a handful of casters out there that I've worked with (and I can out them in the fingers of one hand) that handle their business right. In my experience, a caster that is as reliable AND has the talent to back it up and get the job done ... well, those guys are few and far between these days. Like the old saying goes ... FAST, QUALITY, CHEAP ... pick any two. Jason, you want to talk pricing, lets do it ... look at my Lucy, I took molding casting out of the equation, I reduced my prices to eliminate those costs, and added in (what I believe to be) a fair compensation for materials and wear and tear on my printers. In the end, the clients are happy, I'm happy, everyone's happy ... what's the problem with talking about it. Put me on the show again and let's read these kids the facts of life. 🤣
Hooray I won something! Thank you so much Pestilence Labs for the donation and MCTV for everything you guys do. I will do my best to paint it proper and yes I will be buying a lottery ticket. 😊
That was an interesting discussion. As a painter and now a kit producer I can relate to so many of those situations. Thanks for the kind words. I guess we can never find a clear distinction between calling it a hobby or a business. :)
Really great episode. I am here for the wacky and janky, that's when things are fun. Good conversation. Some amazing work in the gallery again. I really love that music too.
Jason is right on about how crowded the G-Fest dealer's room was. There were some places that were impassable at times and folks had to find another way around. Yes, it was that busy. And, yes, G-Fest is prominently a vinyl kaiju toy show. However, model kits are becoming more and more popular there. Great show this year. GeoS
Scott, you've NEVER lost a box in shipping? I wish I could say the same. USPS has lost a handful of mine, including one last month. I think it was FedEx that lost an enormous box full of castings and then refused to reimburse me because it wouldn't accept the receipt I proved for merchandise I manufactured. Something similar happened with UPS. I won't even try to guess how many boxes have been damaged in transit, or delayed beyond reason. That was all part of what made me give up on almost all casting for others. I was working my tail off for poor pay, in part because I started out with bad information and in part because I waited too long to stand up for myself. More than one person expected the molding and casting to be the cheap part of the production process and it wasn't their problem when I got sick, or injured my shoulder lugging molds around, or whatever. I fell behind and stayed there. But like you, Scott, I didn't take any money until the job was done.
very very interesting conversation about 'reliability'. (kept shouting names out whenever you guys said, 'no names here'!!! :) Sure we can all relate w/ our stories! Keep up the good work, Shippies!
Jason - sorry you are having to deal with your family issues. Cleaning out someone's house is zero fun. And trying to find accounts and all that crap is even worse. Been there, done that. Which is why I have a file on my computer with all the info. Thanks for the reminder though that I need to add the passcode for my tablet to that list. I am stoked for those Supernatural busts. I think I will wait until the next two are ready and get all 4 at once. Really excited to see Crowley. Get the Godzilla Scott. You know you want it. You only live once. Do IT! I have to go take the dogs to get their nails trimmed. I'll be back to watch the rest later.
Good episode, finally finished it, finding a caster has been my main fear/issue with producing kits... at this point, I feel like I really need to get my Saturn running and learn how to use it well, then figure out someone to digitally sculpt them, to put them out... or some other way... really just want the kits, don't want to run a business(the other big reason I haven't started producing)...
You guys are right in that this hobby has some great artists, but they sometimes struggle with the business aspect. And Scott is absolutely right that communication is the key! It is so frustrating and aggravating when you order a kit from someone and they do not provide frequent status updates, and also ignore and blow off emails asking for status of the order.
Thank you so much again guys! Congrats to the winners! Hope to see some painted pictures 😏 BTW. i use Mando for the tenders and surrounding areas. Stuff really works and your sack stays dry and don't feel like a it's been tea baggin all day in a NJ Turnpike Swamp!
Shame on You .. saying Wonderfest was busy.. yeah right.. compared this cattle call.. Yes, I can't stand crowds.. I enjoyed conventions in 90's and early 2000's because there no crowds.. Now, it's giant bulldozer that doesn't moooove..
Too bad a real version Godzilla Minus didn't come stomping through... There is guy in your picture that looks like the comic book guy from the Simpsons..
This is not 1990's anymore.. resin was cheap no internet as distraction .. Everything was cheap back then.. Everybody wanted to cash in .. On this hobby including a quick grift scam it happens.. Especially back then.. Then you have a idiot who was awesome sculptor .. Terrible business sense.. He was from mexico .. people sent him money no questions asked.. There fault..
So we say "No Politics" and that's your "open door" to make a political statement/joke? If it was a joke you should contact me to write some good ones for you! :)
If you are talking about Moebius I would say never! The company that bought it doesn't seem to have much interest in doing anything. However our own Big Daddy Dave has something coming down the pipeline very soon!

Fun show. Would love to come to the BBQ in South Chicago, but I have to weigh that against getting shot.
You will be fine ;)
