For the most part, this channel has been used for the demonstration of what post war small outboards looked and ran like from the perspective and approach of various manufacturers. I appreciate the innovation, variety, marketing, competition, and sometimes gimmicky approach that the companies took in that era. Hopefully this channel displays that and sheds light on some super star models from brands that were over shadowed at the time.

Clean, original, low hours engine. I apologize for the poor sound quality, it was super windy that day.

Johnson / Evinrude 7.5hp transfer port cover review for fuel pump.
Просмотров 995Месяц назад
This product is made by Arthur Simler and he can be found on Facebook in most of the antique outboard groups. I recommend this product as it negates the need for the special two hose pressure tank that the early OMC engines required because they didn’t have a fuel pump. 👍 Correction. The 5.5hp engines did not have removable transfer port covers, so Arthur will not be producing those. The 10, 18...

This poor engine had been through a lot prior to me getting it recently. I checked compression and it was good, but it sounded kind of clanky when I pulled it, and I thought it might be the recoil. I found a broken off pawl retainer screw that was epoxied in place. Drilling, extracting and installing a helicoil fixed that hole, then I noticed that the pawl cup drag spring was installed incorrec...

I recently picked up this super clean 18 that the owner said was used once in fresh water. Yeah yeah, we’ve all heard that before, I didn’t believe it either. Well, after I cleaned it up, changed the condensers, cleaned and set the points, changed the water pump impeller and gear oil(which was clean), I figured let’s give it a try. It started on the second pull! I can’t wait to try it on the boat.

Very nice. Do you have videos on the propellers you customize ?
@@pryan05p71 no, maybe I should do that some time.
@ I’m definitely intrigued. It would be a good winter project video… lol. Propellers are sometimes overlooked for performance gains. Thanks for the reply.
It goes like Jack the Bear. HOLY SMOKES
@@mohamhead9701 lol. That one was a screamer!
Greetings from southern Ontario Canada I have the exact outboard motor been in my family since New it's attached to a 15 foot cedar strip boat thanks for the presentation
@stephenwinter8892 That is amazing that your engine has been your family since new. It sounds like you’ve got a nice boat/engine package.
There is a 15 HP Gamefisher near me for $25 just like this! Every time I see a video with these Eska’s it makes me want to buy it. The power to weight ratio looks amazing coming from a 1980 Sea King 15. They did say that they think it’s seized but it looks really clean and not overheated. I am scared of that ignition system, but if the process is somewhat straightforward, I would be willing!
@bebeslife4519 the ignition swap is pretty straight forward especially with Jim’s tutorial that he posted on FB. However, you might want to start with an engine that has a sound power head and gear case as those parts are difficult to find.
My 51 Elgin has a hand throttle bar on the front, that also sets the anticipated ignition advance. It has a red painted wooden pull handle and cord. Much of the smoothness comes from cold ports. Intake and exhaust ports that are low in the cylinder, and they run more like a cool four cycle. Most two cycled are hotrodded with schnuerle porting and they suck, especially at idle.
@stanleybest8833 From your description of your Elgin, it sounds like it is well loved. West Bends were some the best out there for sure. I agree, higher port timing is a detriment to idle quality.
@GearHeadJP hotrodded? A detriment to idle, quietness, economy and everything else.
Awesome!! Never seen one of those before 👍
@TheKnoxcountry Cool right! Back in the days when everything wasn’t the same.
I had one on a 12ft jon boat. I also put it on a 21ft sail boat I had at the time. It pushed the sail boat almost as fast as the jon boat.
@JDski impressive!
I’ve always wanted one of these, they’re invincible little motors!
@DirthouseBoi 👍💪
Those motors are made in Japan by tohatsu. They were sold by Tohatsu, Nissan, Mercury and mariner. They are one of my favourite little motors.
@Yamahaoutboa… Indeed they are, and I agree, they are awesome little engines.
@GearHeadJP have you seen what the the Aussie boat guy did to one of those motors??? It’s crazy what they can do
@@GearHeadJP here is one of the Aussie boat guys vids on a modified version. he has other vids on a breakdown on what he did to one of them that are worth checking out. ruclips.net/video/tllXQZGZ8x8/видео.html
@Yamahaoutboardguy That’s awesome!
Im 14 and i use that on our inflatable it gets going and can plane with me on it
@LilSmoky365 Wow, that’s awesome! Thanks for checking in. Enjoy!
Super cool outboard. What was the purpose of switching the HP settings?
@skiphinson8620 The actual purpose wasn’t advertised, but my best guess is either for rental stations that used these engines and wanted to limit certain clientele, OR for the average user to limit speed with 5hp for their kid whose just learning boating, or limit with 7.5hp for your neighbor that thinks he knows how to operate a boat. 😂
Thanks. That makes sense.
@skiphinson8620 👍
sweet !
@christinesmith7625 Thanks. I should have kept that one. Instead, I’m restoring a white ‘63 110 (9.8hp). It should be done in the Spring.
@@GearHeadJP you do good work i worked on small outboards for a johnson dealer for 20 years keep them videos coming
@christinesmith7625 Thank you, will do!
Beautiful outboard! Don’t see those everyday 👌✨
@TheKnoxcountry Tell me about it! It took me 45 years to find this one which replaces the first outboard I had as a kid; same model and color!
That’s awesome! Glad you found one. A local outboard repair has one up on display and looks so cool. As a kid, my uncle had an old merc that was red with forward reverse on the handle. It reminds me of that big time 😁
@TheKnoxcountry 👍
What a nice little motor, and so great that it found you. Also glad to see that you don’t get 15 miles per hour with this one! 😂
@1kruzer1 I lucked out with this one for sure. Don’t tempt me with that speed bait! 😂 Not a chance with this little guy…
that is unreal how nice an clean that is, man what a blessing for that not to sell an it to end up in your hands lol, they are so nice for being so small, my neighbor had one on his 18 foot sailboat, it worked just fine for what he did with it.
those motors are great, very reliable
@Yamahaoutboardguy5090 Indeed!
That is the most mint looking engine over ever seen😂
@DirtHouseBoi They don’t have the strongest following, but I think they’re pretty cool.
I see that it has a single line fuel system! Nice upgrade, like you said they are great motors... I currently have two of them, one is nice and tight and the other has a bit of slop in the connecting rods but still runs great. Thanks JP! I enjoy your videos.
@pryan05p71 It is because of one of these 5.5 OMC’s that not once, but twice I got back into the antique outboard hobby after getting rid of every engine I had. They just run so darn well. Those bushed rods sure like a 16:1 mix for the long haul. Thanks for watching. I’m just having fun with these things. I guess you are too!
Is this beauty for sale?
@DavidLanzer-c9x Yes it is. If you leave contact info, I’ll touch base with you.
Great collection! Do you have any evidence of the correct colors for that first one? I'd like to paint mine and also make scale decals for my scale model Merc stands.
@KidCole Thanks. All of them were originally just black with a white logo.
I appreciate your reply. I like your color scheme. I might use it for the scale model stands.
@KidCole My pleasure. Post them on Facebook when you’re done, I’d like to see them.
Thats a nice looking motor, well maintained and tuned, great idle,
@fredkennedy901 That one sure did run well. I got rid of it years ago though because it didn’t have enough power for its intended use at the time.
My dad had this same motor. Looking at it now still runs, sounds & purrs solid 70 years later. Why is it engineering back then produced solid reliable long lasting products & everything made today is shit. Junk that falls apart or becomes temperamental on the least bit of wear & tear, like fragile woke millennial young kids.🫨😢😭
@MrNorm-Ir5iv In my opinion, this was OMC at the top of their game during this era. They were the benchmark for everyone to try and meet. What they lacked in performance, they made up with parts interchangeability, ease of service, smooth & quiet operation, and great aluminum alloys. Unfortunately, other than a few super star models after that, the engineering department fell asleep at the wheel and just kept pumping out old technology, or sometimes worse, released bizarre technology that didn’t hit any of the benchmarks from yesteryear. Sadly the competition began producing a far superior product and blazed past them and this is why they are no longer around. 😢
thats called survivorship bias, for every old outboard thats 70 years old and still running, there will be a thousand that died and have been scrap for decades,
Cool!
@pryan05p71 💪✌️
Liked that low idle, it got a little lope to it.
@terrypikaart4394 😂 it doesn’t miss a beat as it’s choking on its own exhaust gases in the test tank.
@ Never heard a miss just a lope, funny to hear with 180deg firing.. And im very familiar with the lack of oxygen when running in a barrel..
@terrypikaart4394 I said that as a funny thing about the engine, not to question your outboard aptitude. ✌️
Pretty impressive to get 23mph out of a 10hp outboard. I’m assuming it’s a 12’ boat and you are medium weight?
@davemilster not bad, but I’m still working on props. It’s a Sea Nymph 12K and I weigh 190. Unlike most, I don’t put anything in the bow to weigh it down, that’s just a patch up for poor propping. If you get a chance, check out the videos of my QD-14 and QD-15 engines. For 10hp’s they are impressive in my book.
Do you have his contact info? Thanks, good video

Good day. Are these on a 16:1 mix? Thanks
@JBOutboards Yes they are.
@GearHeadJP I just latched onto one of these and it looks to be in fantastic condition. Did you convert to fuel pump on yours
@JBOutboards YES I did.
is there a business to buy fuel pump diaphram or do need to cut my own?
@darinosland7339 It is sometimes on eBay. If I remember correctly, my last batch came from England.
The old girl steps out nicely! Looks like a nice part, am assuming the back of the cover has the defector to direct the fuel charge into the ports. So many of the "flat plate" covers are flat on the back also.... Time will tell if the plastic is affected by heat/fuel over the long term...
@donk499 this cover does have the contoured back side. It’s basically a scaled down version of the 25hp one OMC made years ago. I’m thinking that the automotive grade plastic used will hold up fine. Time will tell.
I recently cobbled together a tn-26 out of three motors. I’m in love with it.
@pryan05p71 Awesome! This is one of the best idling engines I’ve ever experienced. If they only had just a little more power, they’d be the ultimate fishing engine.
@GearHeadJP The problem with collecting old outboards is that I think they are all great!
@pryan05p71 😂 If you look harder you’ll find some duds. Unfortunately, you will have amassed a ton of good ones in the mean time.
Crazy, parts can now just be printed. Thanks Jp. Nice little motor.
@pryan05p71 I know right!?
Good idea. How do you think the plastic will hold up long term?
I think fine. He said it was an automotive grade plastic, but didn’t specify which one. Heck, if the plastic intake manifold on my car engine has lasted for 145k miles with no problems, I’m sure this cover will last.
@GearHeadJP I don't have any experience with 3D printing. Lots of cnc experience and other stuff from the world of manufacturing. I am aware that they now 3D print with metal. It's an amazing process with lasers and powdered metal From what I could see the part looked good. And, that lake you have looks really clean.
@JD-hh9io I’m with you, I don’t have any 3D printing experience either. But I am impressed with some of it.
Seems unusually quiet for an air-cooled single. Nice job JP!
@ALVintageOutboards Thanks Doug.
Nice work saving that sweet thing. Run 'em if you got 'em. Good motto.
@georgekeats1478 🤙💪
would you be able to post or send me a few pics of the tiller labels. Mine are gone and it would be good to know the appropriate positions.
@darinosland7339 I would if I could. I don’t think RUclips allows posting of any pictures.
that is Sharp, love these old motors
@sailawaybob Me too! I like how each manufacturer’s engines had their own unique look back then.
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I'm finishing restoring an engine like this. I would like to know what oil/gasoline ratio you use. And if it's mineral or synthetic? Thank you...
@tatomontagnolli4454 Hello, and thanks for watching. The ratio is 16:1 and I use mineral based oil.
These are great videos. I’m from Wisconsin & remember seeing all these old fishing motors as a kid. The simplicity & engineering that went into all these products back in the day are a testimonial to how products were made with common sense & simplicity to last for decades. My dad had a Johnson sea horse 7.5hp & a Sears Ted Williams 7.5hp fishing motor. The Sears was really cool. Pound for pound was the lightest motor I ever seen. Only weighed 41 pounds. Had a weedless propeller & an auto siphon bailer hose connected to the lower unit near the water pump impeller to suck excess water in bottom of the boat. We’re talking Elon Must style engineering in the 1960’s.🤓🧐
@MrNorm-Ir5iv Thanks for watching the “golden age” of outboard innovation on my channel and I’m glad you also appreciate the products of the era. I have two videos of one of the Sears engines you mentioned on the channel though they are badged as an Elgin and a Wizard.
She gets up and boogies real nice 👌
@SenatorFreddyQuimby Giggity
Thanks for sharing.
@pryan05p71 My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
I can’t get over the SPEED you get from some of your small motors! Never ever heard of 18 MPH from a 5HP outboard. That one has to be under-rated, or are you using nitro-methane for fuel? 😂
@1kruzer1 It may be underrated, idk. I think I can get it going even better with a little prop work. Stay tuned…
That one lunger gets with the program!!! Runs like a 10 horse.
@labradorguy5311 right!?!
ive always wanted one of these for my collection of mercs, these are the same as the mid 90s nissans, they rip..
Why is that one so fast? Seems PDQ for such a small motor. Good job.
@JD-hh9io This little thing has got some moxy for sure. I think I can get it going even faster with a little prop work as it is over revving now with the stock prop.
Also makes a difference on the boat and the payload in the boat.
@pryan05p71 👍
That goes very good on your little sea nymph!. Wonder what motor that really is, they seem Japanese. I have same motor but mariner version on a 14, pushes it around for fishing..
@terrypikaart4394 I was surprised! I can’t wait till I do some prop work to make it go even better. Yes, I believe these are actually Tohatsu’s and were also badged as Mariner and Nissan.
Why won't you show us the inside of the engine ? I mean , under the hood !
@nikoskag816 I’ll have to start doing that.
How is it that looks futuristic, timeless, like an old CVCC and like it was made today??
@This.Here.Channel Timeless right!?!
Nice idle JP!
@ALVintageOutboards Idle life 💪😂
I HAVE ONE JUST LIKE IT
@dskofich Cool, run it!
