You have a great collection of motors, and this one is no exception. I have an Elgin 10hp that I’m very fond of as well. Great powerful motors. Thanks for the video.
My 51 Elgin has a hand throttle bar on the front, that also sets the anticipated ignition advance. It has a red painted wooden pull handle and cord. Much of the smoothness comes from cold ports. Intake and exhaust ports that are low in the cylinder, and they run more like a cool four cycle. Most two cycled are hotrodded with schnuerle porting and they suck, especially at idle.
@stanleybest8833 From your description of your Elgin, it sounds like it is well loved. West Bends were some the best out there for sure. I agree, higher port timing is a detriment to idle quality.

@pryan05p71 Thanks. I enjoy them all. The West Bends are great! There are still others that I’d like to get into.
Beautiful motor!
@VintageOutboardMan I really enjoy these 12 WB’s. This one came with a less than stellar repaint. I’m going to refinish it this winter.
They are smooth indeed! One of my Elgin 7.5hp versions hit 14mph on my Sea Nymph 14R. That 12 of yours is just awesome JP 👌 🇺🇸
&ALVintageOutboards You’ve just gotta love the West Bends. They do everything right.
I just noticed the clamp handles! I just assumed Chrysler designed those! But now I know the real story! West Bend again! 💯
Glorious.
@anarchistangler That they are!

@GearHeadJP hotrodded? A detriment to idle, quietness, economy and everything else.
