Oooo it's been a while since I've watched Criminal Minds so a lot of the episodes blur together or fade from memory, but this is one that has stuck in my brain. I know I'm not the only one because I also remember at least two separate occasions during high school when I overheard other classmates talking about how incredibly disturbing this episode was! Edit: Actually I realize one of those occasions, they were actually talking about a DIFFERENT episode of Criminal Minds, where the victims were turned into dolls, not marionettes. Turns out there are multiple viscerally upsetting episodes in this series...

There's a lot of honesty in this episode. It's comforting. It's also one of the few episodes where Rory seems most like her original teen self (a la Season 1 before they nerfed her from 90s independent teen to 2000s conformist) because she actually expresses herself freely instead of people pleasing, being evasive, or apologizing for speaking freely.

As an aside, Luke (his actor) delivers some of the best lines in the series & the 4 part sequel, when it comes to devotion, loyalty, & love. He has a way of narrowing the focus to that moment, and you just get the sense of how solid & intentional Luke is. That scene with Jess is one of those moments.

Not you thinking the disposable Kodak camera package was a box of Magnums... It wasn't a joke box from Chris, but kind of "remember when we were 16 and in high school together and I got you pregnant and you didn't get to graduate? here's an arrested development celebration of you graduating, including a hostel voucher since we talked about touring Europe together." You've likely heard of Amy Sherman Palladino, the show creator and runner, by this point. Her husband Daniel was her second in command on the show, but he was also working on Family Guy at the same time (even after GG ended), so I'd imagine that's how they got McFarlane. When you watched the pilot and saw the harpist, Drella, that actress Alex Borstein had a recurring role in S1 of GG (as well as other smaller roles that you haven't happened across). She was originally cast as Sookie, but then she got pregnant, so they recast with Melissa. Jackson Douglas, who played Sookie's husband Jackson, is played by Borstein's now ex-husband. But Borstein is also famous, beyond her later Palladino show-role in Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, for voicing Lois Griffin in Family Guy. As to whether Jess broke Rory's heart- nope, just her arm at that point. In some of their ill-advised emotional cheating, they were driving around in the car Dean built from scratch for Rory (while they were supposed to be studying after Luke asked Rory to help tutor Jess) and there was a minor accident. Lorelai was furious at Jess, and also blamed Luke, so they had a big blowout, and Jess left town to go home to his mom in shame. And you heard mention of Lorelai's business classes in the pilot- they were a continuing thing throughout seasons 1 and 2 until this point, but not ever really delved into until this episode. Mostly, it was just mentioned as a reason for Lorelai to be in Hartford fairly regularly (for her major S1 love interest and her to cross paths) and to indicate how hard she was working to make up for not finishing high-school in her teens, plus getting ready to open her own inn.

This just helped me realize the symmetry of Kirk coming out of the bushes to end Lorelai & Luke's scene in this premiere, versus Kirk running out of the Dragonfly Inn opening interrupting Lorelai & Luke's first kiss in the finale.

During that dark year (during a whole 5 years actually) the people in that bunker couldn't get out. Several tons of a building had dropped on the one entrance/exit it had. So the people couldn't defect/actually leave. Otherwise, yeah, they might have run at that point. Though, there was nothing to survive on food wise for miles around and there were other threats they didn't yet know about that would have made survival outside pretty difficult too.

  • @SLift-mn8hi

Jennifer Morrison (Emma) was only in two episodes of this season- and one of those was the last couple of minutes you saw there. Jared Gilmore (young Henry) was in an episode or two at the start of the season and a few at the end of the season when they knew they were doing the series conclusion, but that was pretty much it. The version of younger Henry they showed, and the other Hook, were part of a Wish Realm Emma had accidentally made in S6, where she had gotten to grow up with her parents; to snap Emma out of only remembering the Wish world, Regina killed that world's Charming and Snow. But, to find a way to keep Colin O'Donoghue on the show as Hook, they went back to that world and whipped up a way to incorporate that version of the character. Alice and Robin are young-ish to be getting married, but more like early 20's than teens still.

Funnily enough, Floyd Stiles was mentioned in the Bracebridge episode that you noticed this one paralleling. Richard, when telling Emily about quitting, mentions that Floyd looked stunned. Richard sends a few further episodes of S2 struggling with finding something to do that he's now retired... and not too long after decides to open his own small insurance company. It does well enough. Fast forward about a year and a half, Jason Stiles comes to Richard wanting to join his company as a partner, and brings new business with him. But Floyd gets angry that the two are working together, and uses a clause in Jason's contract at the original as cause to sue- the suit doesn't hold water, but Richard has tied up most of his and Emily's assets in his company, so fighting it would cost him a lot. And at the same dinner where this goes down (with Floyd outing Richard's financial secrets to Emily), Floyd also outs that his Private Investigator discovered Jason and Lorelai were dating, which leaves Richard and Emily betrayed and angry with Lorelai and Jason both. Richard screws Jason over, and goes back to Floyd's firm, so Jason decides to sue Richard, and while Lorelai understands that what Richard did to Jason was messed up, she "can't date someone who's suing [her] father". Meanwhile, it leaves Richard and Emily's relationship in shambles (which Lorelai and Rory discover, and are angry about Richard and Emily trying to hide in this episode), and they spend the beginning of S5 separated. This is why Richard had a valet and was not at Emily's "rustic" dinner with Luke. And their reconnection leads to the Wedding Bell Blues episode others have recommended, which is in fact when Emily was in "cahoots" with Christopher as mentioned in the Friday Night Fights episode.

There are a few things I can't forgive Klaus for- a bulk of them are in TVD, but this plotline in TO is the number one reason. People will say he's justified because Hayley tried to take Hope away, but Hayley was literally only trying to keep Hope safe, and then Klaus punishes (abuses in the most extreme sense) her, her loved ones, and also Elijah for betrayal (which was using a dagger to put him to sleep once, the first time in their millenium together, even though Klaus has used it on his siblings multiple times- egomaniacal hypocrite that he is). As to Rebekah-in-Eva's body (Amaya Jiwe actress, Maisie Richardson-Sellers), this was a running plotline because the main Rebekah actress, Claire Holt, decided to take multiple breaks from the show. Maisie recurred in the back half of S2 rather majorly, and then had a guest appearance in S3, and a few guest flashback appearances in S4 as the body's actual inhabitant Eva. This almost immediately preceded her casting in Legends. Funnily enough, Tracy Ifeachor who played her granddaughter Kuasa in Legends had a major recurring role in S3 of Originals as a character named Aya. (As you noticed in another video with Malese Jow- Linda Park in Flash- there are a huge number of crossover cast between not only Smallville and the TVDU, but the Arrowverse and TVDU; I think you missed in the "worst episode of TVD" that Julian was played by Todd Lasance, aka Rival; in S5 of TVD, Rick Cosnett who played Eddie Thawne had a major reccuring role)

Someone may have mentioned on your original upload, but this was an English/American-adaptation of a Venezuelan actual telenovela, so they incorporate a bunch of telenovela plots- down to Jane's father being a telenovela actor (as is his rival Esteban who Xo slept with). Also, when they show figurines talking or hearts glowing, it's incorporating magical realism, inspired by Spanish-American literature; Jane literally meets famous novelist from the genre, Isabel Allende, in a S4 episode.

Basically, after Klaus (and his siblings) were abused by their Viking father growing up and forced by their parents to become vampires as a way of "protecting" them, and then Klaus found out that he was the result of an affair his mother had, so he killed her in rage, and then their father spent centuries hunting them... Klaus became emboldened by his own strength while also quite paranoid (especially as the result of a century he spent cursed with maddening pain). In the 1800s several of the family settled in New Orleans, which they tried to make their city, as you described near the end (and they effectively did for a time). Klaus happened across a young boy one day who had been enslaved and was being abused by his own white father, and Klaus felt empathy as the son of an abusive father so took the boy to raise, giving him a name and nominally making him part of the family. But, he was the lone human child growing up surrounded by a seriously messed up family of brutal vampires. And Klaus, while not treating him as a slave, is abusive to his entire family throughout history- as Rebekah said, he routinely retired his siblings throughout the centuries (using a weapon that could not be used on him) for whatever he perceived as betrayals of himself. When Elijah started to take more care of Marcel, Klaus became bored and resentful and jealous and Marcel was suffering as a result, so Elijah ruined his own relationship with Marcel to push Klaus back to the bad-but-still-better version of himself he was when focusing on Marcel (Elijah prioritized Klaus' potential redemption over Marcel's happiness, though arguably it was the only way to keep Marcel safe). But eventually Marcel grew up and wanted his own independence (and fell in love with his pseudo-aunt Rebekah so resented Klaus for his abuse of her). Marcel and Rebekah drew the siblings' father to town hoping he would make Klaus run away, but in the process got separated and Rebekah thought for a decade (before Klaus retired her to a coffin again for 90 years) that Marcel had died because of their plotting together. A full century after they were run out of New Orleans, leaving Marcel feeling abandoned and still angry though by now he's made it into his own domain, they come back into town and Klaus is resentful of all that Marcel has accomplished, surpassing Klaus and being loved the way Klaus always wanted (but never achieved because no one could enjoy his controlling nature). Because of enemies Marcel made, Klaus is blackmailed into working against Marcel if he wants to see his biological daughter born, and of course Klaus' own pride means he wants to take back the city, so they're at cross-purposes. At times in the three intervening seasons their purposes do align, and their relationship starts to heal... until Elijah and the other sister Freya are largely responsible for the death of Marcel's own foster-daughter, Davina (they don't kill her themselves, but their prioritization of something else means they prevent him from saving her), and Elijah fearing retribution kills Marcel (unbeknownst to him, Marcel has drunk a serum that will make him more powerful and an unto-here-unforeseen threat if he dies with it in his system... so Elijah creates their own worst enemy).

I strongly disagree with you and Frank, but the argument I would make is not that all people have some good in them (or at least there is goodness in those who care about their well-being and will grieve them) and shouldn't be murdered, but rather: how is Frank certain that every person he ever kills will actually be guilty of the crimes he's decided they are? That he'll not cause an entirely different set of collateral damage by shooting the wrong person, as by letting "the wrong person" live? He's set himself as judge and executioner, and yes the crimes he's judging on the show are mostly serious crimes (murdering old ladies), but he will make a mistake. For all he knew, there was one of those Hell Dog's five year-old sons on the other side of the wall from that explosion, or there was a reporter/FBI agent embedded with them who was trying to stop further crime but if Frank had shot every man who ran out might have died. He's an excellent marksman, but even he could miss, or he could set as his target the wrong person. And yes, Frank lets the old man go (which Grotto didn't do for the old lady), but Frank's actions still very nearly cause harm to the old veteran when the Hell Dogs come into his apartment building. Maybe Frank could have shot every single one before they came into the building and used the man as a human shield if Matt wasn't there to fight him, but that's still a risk that he is taking and a decision he is making for other people. As a Catholic and a lawyer who does essentially believe in the rule of law, of course that's going to affect Matt's outlook (though, to be circumspect and fair, Frank doesn't know about these aspects of his personality). As to the cliffhanger, it's not a tumor. Frank was shot in his head- it's a bullet. Someone else decided not to care about collateral (at least, within how Daredevil showed it- this is contradicted in Punisher) and Frank and his family paid the price.
