I'm actually mostly on Rory's side. College is hard. Sometimes students need a break. Someone in my family had to take a semester off because they were struggling with their mental health. I think Rory's trigger being someone telling her she ISN'T the most perfect creature and good at everything she does shows how fragile her ego is (has ALWAYS been), but I completely understand her needing to take a break. Lorelei really screwed this up, and I hate that it is never acknowledged. Had Lorelei been more understanding, and helped Rory make a plan, she might have been able to be more productive in her time off, but no. Lorelei can't stand Rory deviating any more than Emily could stand Lorelei deviating. Richard and Emily were great to give Rory a place to stay, I am not mad at them at all for how they handled this, tbh. Logan also did a great job. He supported her decision without judging, but also knew that Rory was Rory and encouraged her to go back to school when she was ready. I truly do not understand the level of Logan hate in the fandom.
Also, once you're able to start posting GG content again. PUH-LEASE do season 5 episode 8. It is the ONLY Dean episode I want to see you review.
I also think it was important for Rory to get the abridged version of Lorelei’s childhood. Up until this point her grandparents have been doting and indulgent of Rory so she never fully understood how bad her mother had it. As soon as she didn’t agree with whatever they wanted they started to constrict around her and snap on her. She finally understood that whatever they give you comes with a cost.
The problem with that view is that Rory did NOT leave school because she was struggling with school itself OR due to her mental health.
I know there needs to be conflict/drama to keep people interested, but this storyline made zero sense. Logan's family trying to break them up & going to "war" with the senior Gilmores could have been interesting.
Lorelai was always strong & independent (even as a teenage mom, leaving the comfort of her rich parents' home for the unknown), so for a daughter SHE raised to completely fall apart the first time someone gives her constructive criticism was ridiculous.
I have to disagree. Richard and Emily played both sides of this situation HARD - the later episode where everyone has their respective fights around the dinner table is something that needed to happen much, much sooner. But if they were interested in having an actual discussion, they wouldn’t have just told Lorelai what was going to happen with Rory, they would have approached it in a way that lead to a more reasonable outcome.
The issue also wasn’t just that Rory was taking time off of school. The issue is that everyone around her continued to treat her with kid gloves and Lorelai wasn’t willing to do that anymore. If Rory is enough of an adult to steal a yacht, she’s enough of an adult to have a discussion about the situation.
I think this is just another example of Rory playing the side that benefits her most. She’s young so I don’t necessarily fault her for it, but it definitely wasn’t a situation that was handled well by any party.
I agree, most people actually can't finish university in four years, they switch majors or take time off to work or travel, it's normal. I wish that her break was either about rediscovering her passion for journalism (maybe through an online blog) or discovering a new passion. Instead she just waffles around until Jess snaps her out of it which doesn't really involve any character growth. And then when she goes back she's obsessed with still finishing in the same timeline which is insane.
