      @@petraracki5981How does a girl *make* a guy go away, when she’s practically alone in the house? She’s sixteen, he’s blatantly ignoring her clear discomfort (and clear-enough statements) about him being there, her own boyfriend doesn’t take “I want Friday night to myself” for an answer, Paris already guilt-tripped her into not enforcing her boundaries, and Lorelei’s too busy trying to be Rory’s sassy “best friend” who teases her about doing laundry on a Friday night to actually teach her how to stand up for herself (or to call for a neighbor’s help if a guy’s being too pushy).
      The Gilmore Girls have been taught, down the line, to avoid direct confrontation or aggression at all costs, and to value keeping a boyfriend/fiancé/husband/random guy at a bar more than making *herself* happy or comfortable. Rory’s already learned to be on edge around Dean from early on (the guy literally got mad and dumped her in season one because she didn’t want to say “I love you” after just three months). The fact that Lorelei took *Dean’s* side in that matter, instead of encouraging Rory to trust her own boundaries, is exactly why Rory can’t kick Jess or Paris out when they’re either guilt-tripping her or blatantly ignoring her objections.

      @@jclyntoledo hmm, I don’t exactly agree but I can see where you’re coming from. Considering he never left Lindsay while Rory immediately left the country after they slept together, I don’t exactly count that as a “break up”.
      Bit of a different scenario than them dating and him breaking up with her first because she couldn’t immediately say she loved him, then when he got jealous over her and Jess, then again when he saw her having fun at her grandparents and felt inferior.

    • @NeriSiren
      @NeriSiren 6 месяцев назад +6

      Dean did have anger and control issues to begin with. He got all weird about Rory and Lorelai’s views on gender roles during that one movie night, dumped Rory for not saying “I love you” fast enough, got mad at her again when he drove to Chilton to see her after the break-up and saw that one Chilton guy being a boundary-crossing jerk to her, got all hurt that she wanted to spend a Friday night alone (“weird” or not, laundry or otherwise, the girl has a right to spend Friday night alone, and his “I’m not mad” didn’t ring genuine at all, considering she felt the need to promise him all of Saturday as a peace offering), and his “apology” for yelling at her later was just more of the same. He said it so flatly and without meeting her eyes, it was clear he didn’t intend to actually deal with the deeper issues beyond saying “sorry.”
      I honestly don’t blame Rory for lying about Jess having only just stopped by, instead of admitting she wasn’t able to be more assertive about turning him away (best case, Dean might’ve done a proto-season-three and gone actual Jets vs. Sharks on Jess, and Rory seriously just wanted a quiet night alone this whole episode). Dean and Lorelai both gaslit her into saying “I love you” to him by the end of season one, and Lorelai certainly doesn’t demonstrate long-term boundary-setting in her own relationships, so of course Rory’s first impulse was to try avoiding a confrontation altogether by saying Jess only dropped off the food.
      The fact that Dean was the same way with Lindsey (and yes, Rory was 100% wrong to cheat with him), gaslighting his own wife when she almost caught him cheating, shows there was always a (tm) behind his Nice Guy act.

    As a teen girl, if I had been put in this position I probably would not have known how to handle it any better than Rory did.
    And as far as dancing with another man, it can be innocent as Lorelai said or it can be torrid as it was for Emily because she knew what he wanted and she was surprised that she wanted it to. Lorelai should have respected the kind of woman her mother is but it was up to Emily to make the right call for herself.
    I’m diving too deep into this episode.
    One final thing, Kelly Bishop, the actress that plays Emily Gilmore, was in Dirty Dancing and I always loved seeing her dance at the end of the movie. She’s a Tony Award winning actress and dancer and I think the line, “I don’t dance” is meant to be a quippy nod to her career.

      Yeah, that's one of the things I appreciate about Emily's character. They make it clear that she loves Lorelai like crazy but their differences make it to where they constantly fail to connect. She has no idea how to express love for Lorelai in ways Lorelai can appreciate, and Lorelai can't really express love to Emily either. It's like they are speaking two totally different languages and resenting one another for failing to speak the language they each prefer. Lorelai carries a lot of hurt from feeling neglected and controlled as a child, and Emily carries a lot of hurt from when Lorelai ran away. But Emily one hundred percent loves Lorelai more than anything, even though she never really figures out how to show that. (Although, actually, I think she came really close when she offered to buy that farmhouse for Lorelai and Luke as a wedding present. She made it so clear that she had really put a lot of thought into what Lorelai would enjoy about the house. It was the one time I can think of when she really seemed to try to see from her daughter's perspective.)

      @Harri_James 6 месяцев назад +4

      I do feel a lot of what Jess does is glossed over and was actually shocked on my first rewatch as an adult to see how bad a boyfriend he was. I definitely don't agree that Dean was a good boyfriend, though. They do massively dumb him down and emphasise his bad traits in season 2 to make Jess look better, but there's red flags in season 1 as well. The car, at best, is a massively over the top and inappropriate gift for someone you've been seeing 3 months, and at its worst could be interpreted as love bombing. He gets angry when Rory isn't ready to say I love you back, and she initially doesn't handle it very well, but she was caught off guard and panicked. I do feel she handles it well when she explains to him she just wants to make sure she means it when she says it because of the weight it carries and even goes so far as to explain that she finds it difficult to say because her parents said they loved each other but then didn't end up together and he still breaks up with her for not saying it.
      Also, while he has reason to he jealous of Jess because Rory does like him, she has no interest whatsoever in Tristan romantically and yet Dean is constantly jealous and possesive around him and gets angry at Rory, as if she is responsble for Tristan liking her. Dean should trust his girlfriend. Instead he feels the need to chaperone her Romeo and Juliet rehearsal and stop her from kissing Tristan despite it being part of the play (and yes Tristan goads him but if he actually trusted and listened to Rory then he would know Tristan is just being an ass) (also yes I know Rory and Tristan kissed but this only happened because Rory was vulnerable having been broken up with the day before, she regrets it immediately and turns down all of Tristan's advances afte that...also Dean never actually found out the kiss so like his crappy behaviour isn't based on that)
      Also, in this episode, he gets angry Rory wants time to herself and also disrespected her wishes by still coming over, regardless of the Jess stuff she said she wants time alone and yet he calls and says that hes coming over. Later in the season when he notices Rory isn't wearing his bracelet instead of just asking why she's not wearing it, assuming it could be for any number of acceptable reasons his response is anger before Rory even has a chance to answer. She shouldn't lie about losing it, but when he gets angry, just noticing she doesn't have it on, of course, she's afraid to say she lost it. When he starts to worry that she likes Jess and is becoming distant he becomes possesive to the point of calling and leaving 14 messages in the span of 2 hours (he also mentions in the messages that he pages her as well). He also breaks up with her at the dance marathon in front of the whole town, humiliating her and yet when she is dating Jess he still is posessive of her - telling Jess to watch his back because this is his town (which lol, no its not, you're from Chicago and only moved here a year before Jess) and telling Jess he and Rory are just friends just like Rory and Jess were just friends - insinuating that Rory will break up with Jess to get back with him. Then, when they fight at Kyle's party, Dean starts it by punching Jess. Yes he saw Rory was upset and yes he saw Jess caused it (and what Jess did was terrible but Dean doesn't know what happened and doesn't wait to find out any context) but starting a physical fight is not to help Rory, she's actively telling them to stop the whole time because she does not want that. He does purely out of his own anger and dislike of Jess.
      Those are just examples off the top of my head, there are more times he is unreasonably angry over little things and is posessive. Honestly his treatment of Lindsey when they're married is downright abusive but the hallmarks and signs of it were all there in his relationship with Rory as well and if he married her instead I imagine he would have treated her just as badly as he did Lindsey.
      Also, just to be clear, I'm not saying how Rory treated Dean was okay, she treats him badly too but that doesn't justify Dean's treatment of her either. All of Rory's boyfriends suck and treat her pretty badly, but Dean's behaviour is actively frightening on multiple occasions

    • @cierrat
      @cierrat 6 месяцев назад

      @Harri_Ess_Kay totally understand some of these. I guess in my head I'm still looking at some of this as teenage behavior, not that it's an excuse,but just a reason. I felt like some of Dean's habits were things he could grow out of and didn't necessarily do on purpose(not that that makes it okay) but Jess did many of the things he did on purpose, it seemed just to get his way or to get a rise out of Dean. Even as an adult I find it difficult to control my anger when someone is a constant jerk to me. I think Jess character was actually kind of similar to Tristan. I think Tristan was supposed to be that constant cocky jerk before Jess showed up but they had Rory show no interest because the actor got the role on one tree hill. I think eventually she would have fallen for him similar to the way it happens with Jess.

Another great one for introducing the town is 1x5 Cinnamon's wake. Rory hasn't been a great girlfriend to Dean in seasons 2 and 3 so it gets frustrating as she has her Angel reputation.

    As for your question if it was Jess' thing the first seasons to hit on someone else's girlfriend and mock others etc - not only did he do exactly that - but when he finally was in a relationship with Rory, he tried to force himself upon her, which was never really discussed as the horrific sexual offense that it was. Another show runner playing down how women are treated every day and influencing normalizing violent behavior. Regarding GG: Jess is one of a few on this cast going through a believable character development though and actually learning from his mistakes.

  • @NeriSiren
    @NeriSiren 6 месяцев назад +2

    I’m going to have to heavily disagree with your assessment of Rory and Lorelei in this one. At this point in the show, Rory is a people pleaser more than an actual jerk. This episode clearly shows that *none* of the Gilmore women have ever been taught to set boundaries (or to be happy just being themselves without a man to “complete” them).
    Rory is clearly afraid of making Dean mad even by just saying she wants to be alone on a Friday night. She immediately promises to make up for it by giving him her entire Saturday, like she’s obligated to appease his bruised ego because she dared to want some alone-time.
    And Dean *does* have a dangerously toxic ego. He’s possessive, has no more respect for Rory’s boundaries than Jess (insisting on seeing her “just to say hi” even though she’s already promised him the entire next day), and has serious anger issues. There is NO excuse for that sort of thing.
    Watching him yell at Rory while she tries to find the words for why she genuinely wasn’t able to be more assertive with either Jess or Paris (because, again, not even the ultra-progressive Lorelei taught her how to say No and then aggressively enforce it) was the excruciating part for me.
    Yes, Rory’s later outright cheating is a bad thing, but blaming a 16-year-old for not being able to deflect a loser like Jess more effectively, or to tell her boyfriend that he’s scaring her and she needs space, when being Nice and Tactful and never EVER Aggressive is what women are taught practically from birth? That’s a hard NO for me.
    Honestly, the worst thing about this show for me is that it never gives the female characters any kind of real character *development* away from men.
    That it never, on the other hand, presents any truly solid, non-toxic guys for us to ship either Rory or Lorelei with (because dramaaaaa!!!), if we absolutely must ship them with someone heteronormative.
    And that it never gives Lorelei the power to set lasting boundaries with her parents (people don’t “let” others guilt-trip them; it takes excruciating work to unlearn the Appease and Obey instinct), nor gives Richard and Emily any lasting dose of perspective outside of their 1% bubble or any kind of deep reflection on their mistakes. Because dramaaaaaa!!!!
    It is NOT the women (other than Emily, maybe) who are the scariest to watch in this episode. It’s Jess and Dean taking out their respective personal insecurities (that they clearly had long before moving to Stars Hollow) on a girl who clearly isn’t ready for a long-term relationship (she’s *sixteen* , FFS!!!), but hasn’t been clearly and consistently taught that she can exist wholly and happily outside of a romantic relationship.

    This woman has virtually no positive relationship with her daughter, yet she wants to act like they're the best of friends in front of all these strangers? Like has she met Lorelai? There's no way she wouldn't have known that plan would bomb spectacularly.
    Also! She didn't know what a couple's massage was? On what planet?
    The control freak stuff is just insane. And the fact that she literally never shut the f*** up the entire time - I realize it was definitely exaggerated to explain just how annoyed Lorelai was, but honestly, Lor's 1000% in the right for getting frustrated.
    But I also would have asked the desk people right there for just one or two treatments that weren't at the exact same time, and explain to Emily that yes, it is good to have some alone time during a spa weekend. Just let it happen. If anyone could convince Emily that would be a good thing, it's Lorelai.

    Jess was annoying all the time 😢 he was always rude to Rory and Lorelai and everyone else. Only thing They have in common was „books”. Almost all people who like them, like them couse They like Jess from looks. But like true He was the worst Rory „boyfriends” from all 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Lorelai is too mean to her mother. The only thing her mother complained about the whole episode was Lorelai avoiding her. ☹
    Also, Rory has this thing of being a backstabber yet also being too kind. Like...she cheats because she allows people to steamroll over her boundaries.

      @@cutienerdgirl She belittles Lor for wanting to wear her own clothes, calls her a petulant 4 year old for pointing out the extremely inappropriate couples massage, interrupts her private facial (and only moment of peace) and blames her for "forcing" her to dance with a rando. And that's the episode where Emily is at her best. I love Emily, but there's literally never a single episode where Emily can refrain from insulting her own daughter. Even Kelly Bishop thinks she's horrible.

      The first one was lighthearted but that second one was a bit sniffy. It’s nuanced and we all know when something innocent changes.
      It’s like when someone shakes your hand then stroke it after. Is hand shaking wrong, no but you know when the intention has changed.
