    • @thatjillgirl
      @thatjillgirl Год назад +75

      I liked them too! And I thought the lawsuit drama was kind of a dumb reason for her to break up with him. It felt a little out of character. Lorelai has always had a rocky relationship with her parents. Her dad was royally screwing over Jason, and she picked her dad's side? It didn't make sense to me that she would just so firmly end things so quickly like that. I do think he wasn't the right fit for her in the long run. She would never leave Stars Hollow, and I struggle to imagine Jason trying to settle down there with her (same problem with Christopher). But they did have good chemistry, and yeah, he was good at maintaining his own identity and boundaries with her.

    • @Harrison_J_T
      @Harrison_J_T Год назад +27

      YES! Everyone seems to hate him and yet he's my favourite of all of Lorelai's boyfriends (her and Luke have great chemistry, but I never enjoyed their relationship much when they were together). The reason people give for disliking him as well are things like he didn't let her sleep in the same room as him but he does so because he has chronic insomnia and she gets to stay in a room she likes better with a giant TV and loads of DVDs. Like maybe he shouldn't have sprung it on her when she was already there but I don't see it as this horrible thing like everyone else seems to. The only time I dislike him is when he shows up at the inn but that was because I don't think he would do that. It was a situation created by the writers purely to add an obstacle between her and Luke

    Oh the irony of Rory telling Dean he can't drop out of college, even temporarily. She was such a snob when it came to education and people having different life goals. And then the shoe was on the other foot.

      Rory was absolutely a snob about school before the “”””boat incident””””. And a snob about education and life goals in the revival too, despite her own obvious lack of success. It is *so entitled* to not only be so aggressive about her opinions on Dean quitting school, but to insist that he is ruining his life by saving up for a house with his wife. Tells you exactly how possessive she is of him. Lindsey was totally justified in telling Dean to go no contact with her. The writing was on the wall.

      Watching as an adult, Dean gives me bad vibes for most of the run. They actively dumb his character down in season 2 to make Jess look better but there's moments in season 1 that are red flags too (him breaking up with Rory because she doesnt say I love you back is the big one). He has a terrible temper and is incredibly jealous, and is distrustful of Rory. There's the whole Donna Read thing where he says Rory is only a feminist because her mum is. Also, when he confronts Jess he says 'This is my town' when he, like Jess, moved to Star's Hollow from a city (though I think this might just be the writers forgetting Dean was from Chicago). Also, when he and Jess physically fight Dean starts that fight without even knowing what happened (which is not to say what Jess did was okay but Dean had no idea why Rory was upset other than it involved Jess). Rory also actively told Dean not to, but he still punched Jess so it wasn't about her feelings, it was about him wanting to punch Jess pure and simple.
      Both Jess and Dean are terrible boyfriends to Rory in different ways as teenagers, but what we see of adult Jess, he matures and grows and becomes a better person whereas adult Dean continues to be a shitty person (and maybe even gets worse). Also, not that it excuses his behaviour, but Jess gre up with an absentee father and a flaky mum who shipped him off to live with his uncle when she felt she couldn't deal with him any more. Stuff like that's going to make a kid angry and likely to act out, again I'm not excusing Jess' behaviour, just saying it explains it a bit.

Now sure Dean could have handled it better but, are we forgetting that he's a teenage boy who fell in love. He was a good boyfriend to Rory but, she was sneaky and manipulative. Not to mention the entire pressure of the town on Dean (a literal teenage boy) who would be ready to eat him alive if made the slightest mistake with Rory. Also, Dean was a teenager and had to work, in fact, we see him work throughout the entire series. His life was difficult in different ways than Jess's. I'd sure as hell be angry if my boyfriend was obviously flirting and crushing on another girl and then telling me it's nothing and then literally getting with that person the minute we break up, anyone would. @@Harrison_J_T

    So, from what I remember, Richard worked for Floyd, felt like he was being pushed out and so retired. Then, realising he missed work, set up his own company and then Jason aporoached him about teaming up. While I agree with you about it being hard to gauge whats at stake not knowing how much the pension is, my understanding is, as he retired, that pension was his and Emily's main income. Him setting up his own business would bring further income but not straight away (and i imagine he would need some for his eventual re-retirement). By Floyd suing them, if the business goes under then Richard's pension will be used to pay all the business loans back leaving him and Emily with no income whatsoever.
    They do seem to be generationally rich from what we know of their backgrounds so it's hard to understand how much of an income they actually require...I guess it's a case of maintaining their lifestyles, which in their social circles is important? @ennuiblue4295 Very true. To be fair money and who has it is weird and inconsistent on the show. I get that Luke was pretty frugal, but even so, I never understood how he had...what was it, $100,000 to spontaneously buy the building next to the diner? And can afford to loan Lorelai $30,000 for the inn. Rory gets a card swiping job at the dining hall to earn some money in her first year of Yale but doesn't have any job in future years despite seeming to have no issues with money. Also, there's terrible continuity around whether or not she has a trustfund.

    • @BirdOnATypwriter
      @BirdOnATypwriter Год назад +2

      @@Harrison_J_TI can see Luke having that much money, honestly. From what I understand he inherited the building from his father, meaning he doesn't have to pay rent or a loan. He doesn't go on vacation often, and if he does, he seems to mostly go camping in the woods, which also doesn't cost anything. His personal experiences (meaning excluding the diner) are probably just food, water and heating. Considering that he lives alone for most of the show and his living space isn't too big, he probably doesn't pay that much for that either. His Diner is also seemingly the most popular restaurant in town, with many visiting every day. He probably saves up a few thousand dollars every month for over a decade, plus he might have also got money after his parents died. It's still a lot, but not impossible. And when he borrowed Lorelei the money he also had the additional income from being a landlord

    About Dean and Lindsay:
    1st, a disclaimer: NOTHING I'm about to say justifies Dean being a jerk to Lindsay and cheating on her.
    Lindsay wants to be a housewife, wants a town house and a car. But it's obviously not working out..
    She expects Dean to work all day and then come home to her and be all happy and spend time with her etc...
    Someone mentioned that Lindsay just wants to be a good wife to Dean. Except.. it's not working.
    After Dean finally cheats on her with Rory (which this episode starts to set up), he goes home to her and actaully has the galls to act like a disgusting jerk to her and yell at her.
    And Lindsay mentions how all they do is fight. That she spends her days waiting for him to come home and then they just fight.
    That's not healthy for either of them. And especially for Lindsay.
    Being a housewife is obviously not making her happy if all she does is wait for Dean.
    So, since she wants her town house and her car, and she's just there waiting for Dean, why doesn't she find a job, even a part time one? Or even go to community college, even on a part time basis.
    That way she would have something besides Dean and her mom, something to fill her days with, something that she might find fulfilling and she'd happier.
    Just my 2 cents.

      You're absolutely right. They were WAY too young to get married, but when you think about it, that was probably the point of the storyline. I think the writers wanted to show that teen marriage isn't glamorous. Think about One Tree Hill. Nathan and Haley got married at 16, and they dealt with all kind of crap like money issues, secrets, emotional turned cheating, and almost got divorced. While they weren't toxic like Lindsey and Dean, they were way in over their heads, too.

    • @imibee5184
      @imibee5184 Год назад +2

      @@rachelmartin5187 Definitely way too young and you're right, it was the whole point. Plus Dean still being in love with Rory. Felt like he was settling. He rushed into that marriage.
      Yup, totally agree about One Tree Hill. And while Haley and Nathan had all those issues you mentioned, I feel like them ending together wasn't realistic. But then again, the whole show was unrealistic. How many murders and plotting and whatever else can happen in a small town? Even their daily lives in high school felt unrealistic - but that's the point I guess; otherwise no one would watch the show.
      Rory's high school life felt closer to reality.
      Two shows about a small town but wow, it felt like two completely different worlds.

      And you know something? I think she and Dean still could have done better than they did if Rory had respected the boundaries. Lindsay was trying really hard, and initially Dean was trying too until Rory kept badgering him and he decided the grass was greener. He might have eventually gotten there on his own, but who knows.

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn Год назад +8

      @@thatjillgirlI disagree. Dean was obsessing over rory THE NIGHT BEFORE HIS WEDDING. Even before he cheated, he was being unfaithful in his heart. It's one thing to have unresolved feelings, it's another to go into a marriage with unresolved feelings.
