    AB - I agree with this prob being Shanny's last year but why not let him go this summer? Why let him run in back for the 100th time with most likely the same result, perhaps worse as our forward group is worse now. Just more uselessness on behalf of MLSE. All they care about is money, its clear. As a Leaf fan of over 30 years, it deeply saddens me that this is happening to this team and were wasting the Matthews era.

    AB - your memory of why Dubas left is different than what I remember. In a situation where he had failed to make any substantive progress, Dubas was negotiating for increased control AFTER discussions had concluded and MLSE and his agent had a hard deal on the table. Shanny reacted to the last minute brinksmanship as he should have ... he moved on. Is my memory flawed, did other information come our after the fact, or did I misunderstand your comments? I just never understood that decision to have anything to do with handling the Core 4.

    For MLSE, Shanahan is doing a wonderful job. An exciting team guaranteed a playoff spot with a full arena. MLSE wants the franchises to make money and the Leafs do - lots of it. Only when MLSE sees a drop in revenue will Shanahan be fired. MLSE is in the hockey business not hockey fandom. I must admit I am confused by the inherent logic that Shanahan would be worthy of more time if he was bold, forced a trade of Marner and Nylander and as a result were fighting for a playoff spot. Not sure how Leafs' fans believe they would automatically upgrade from these 2 players.

  • @oldman8952

    Rewrite history much. Dubas wasn't renewed because he negotiated a contract. Then backtracked publicly using his wife and children as an excuse, he then demanded his boss' s job in everything but the title but most especially his boss's paycheck. There isn't a company in the world that wouldn't have passed on him for that. Then instantly he has a job offer from the Fenway group that matched what he attempted to use his children to leverage from Toronto. "Those guys", all have NMCs. There is no forcing them to do anything. All they can do is let Marner walk for nothing which brutal asset management. Fire Shanahan... Dubas, Shanahan and Keefe all should have been fired after they lost to Montreal. This experiment is almost done. It is only a few years away from another tank. Matthews will be 30 when his next contract is up. At some point he will start to think about having his name on a cup instead of being the highest paid guy in the history of hockey. Nylander... imagine how little effort 31 year old, 11.5 million dollar, full NMC Nylander will put into defending. Marner is likely gone for nothing next year. All because Dubas or Shanahan didn't have the stones to draw a line in the sand with the Nylander negotiation. Montreal. If I had to choose a world where Boston or Ottawa won every year and Montreal never won, or a world where Montreal won a single time. Life would be good for Bruins and Sens fans.

    Absolutely have to even it out. Every no-tax state team should have a “tax effect” reduction in their salary cap amount. That way there is no advantage for those teams against all other teams. Obviously it would have to be added to the CBA, but take the average state/provincial tax rate and apply it to every team’s salary total in a no tax state to “add in the state tax effect on those salaries.

  • @DeeZee9
    @DeeZee9 День назад

    Hey boys, long time listener and a CPA with years of experience with expat taxes. Lots of misguided discussions on the taxes conversation, but in my opinion, the easiest way to even the playing field would be similar to a tax equalization. Essentially, every player has two tax returns. The first, their real one, the second would be equalized to a single state in the US (likely NHL headquarters). This return would be for the cap calculation. This way teams in Canada with a higher tax rate would be able to pay players a bit more while not having the same cap hit (difference being the actual tax amount vs the hypothetical return). In the end this might cost a bit more in tax prep fees, but would be huge for equality in the league.

    • @robm9999
      @robm9999 День назад

      Or, you take a tax adjusted income for the salaries they have on their contracts and apply an average tax rate on no-tax state payrolls to gross up their salaries under the cap. You can’t have two sets of tax books because Gary Bettman will never have anything other than one cap # for all teams. So you have to effectively reduce the no-tax state’s salary cap by the average state tax rate on their contracts. Effectively you reduce their cap, rather than giving other teams an expanded cap amount. But there is an answer.

    • @DeeZee9

      @@robm9999good points and a good suggestion. I agree it’s hard to see the league have a variable cap. Really it comes down to adjusting the cap to flatten out the tax impact. My thought was he’d rather punish the Canadian teams (make them spend more and expand their cap).

    The discussion on D pairings was interesting. I've always seen the fit of OEL and McCabe - they're almost Reilly and Tanev light. The Tanev McCabe discussion was a consideration of a standard lineup vs situational combinations. 45 seconds to go in the third, up by a goal and the opponent has pulled the goalie ... bring on Tanev/McCabe! You'd have to play them together enough to get the feel of one another, but I don't think I could see this as a standard pairing. Also, no one seems to be mentioning that Reilly, paired with Tanev, and OEL, paired with McCabe, should be able to add offence from the back end - this has been as big an issue as the D's ability to defend. Marner for Necas straight up .... before I say "have you lost your f*&king mind", lets remember we're saying this on July 11th, and today, there is no other impact player to go out and get with what you save by paying Necas vs Marner. Now, if it was June 23rd, and you had a tentative deal in place with Jake Guentzel and could manage the cap impact .... well that's a whole different discussion. Then you've flipped Marner for Necas and Guentzel. We didn't or couldn't act while the window was open. The problem is not Marner, its roster construction, and we have let the free agency period move by us, so there is no longer any opportunity to make the changes required to fix roster construction. Anyone suggesting they would do this deal now, is really answering a question about why they're incapable of being a GM. There's a lot of stupid talk about Marner. People need to remember that he is not the problem ... never has been. The problem is that Dubas paid too much individualy and collectively to four players who are all forwards and usually play with one another. One of them - AM - would be stupid to trade. The other three? You could get rid of any one of them and create better balance by adding a really good forward and a top two D-man with what you saved by subtracting one player and another spare part. I think the D is better. But last year, I thought the Leafs were just inside the top ten teams. Now, I think maybe top seven/eight. The thing that seperates the Leafs from the Panthers or the Knights, or the Oilers or the Avs? They are less courageous and less willing to do WHATEVER needs to be done to win now.

Hayley W., Brandon P. and all others demonstrating to be a truly LOYAL Leaf employees, let’s elevate and promote those people and hire strong Leaf employees loyal to the organization and remove anyone praying at the cult of Dubas.

    With regards to the defensive lines, don’t forget that there is no rule that I know about in the NHL that say “thou shalt not change up lines during a hockey game. We could very well see Tanev and Reilly be a pair for 80% of the time, and see Tanev and McCabe out for the final 2 minutes of a game with a 1 goal lead, or Reilly and OEL/Liljegren if we are down by 1 in the final 5 minutes. I do like that we now have a little more of this flexibility behind us. And you have to remember, we are stacked up front. Everyone says we need more goal scoring, but we were on the top 5 in the league for goals 4 in the regular season. Everyone says “well we fall off in the playoffs”. You’re not wrong, but that’s not because we have shit forwards. The talent is there. The issue is how they are ran, which might be fixed by a different coaching style. Also, our defence and goaltending sucked. It’s hard to get into the game when the other team scores 2 goals in the first 5 shots then locks down their end of the ice, or when we spend 5 straight minutes in our own zone because we can’t get the puck past center ice. The goaltending and defensive rebuild we did this year should fix these issues. This should allow our forwards more time in the offensive zone where they can do their job.

    Truth be told...Spezza saw the writing on the wall and left before he was removed. As far as Clark is concerned, I'm actually surprised that the organization didn't replace him once dubas was gone. Nothing to see here folks...move on. There are plenty of talented scouts who can replace him.

    Who cares! Not like we’ve gotten the best draft picks in years, or they would be scrambling to sign ufa to fill holes

    The only real loss is Clark leaving with the Leafs' internal consideration of their prospects. I don't think given the Leafs prospect pool that this is a big issue.
