    Even if they insisted on ending the Zamasu arc that way, there was a much better way to resolve it for Trunks: Leave him stranded in the past. With the Tournament of Power arc following it, they could have brought Trunks in for the U7 team and he would have a powerful motivation: win the wish on the universal Dragon Balls to restore his timeline. 17 could even still win, and his broad wish arguably would restore his universe anyway, adding an extra feel good moment for him and Mai in the epilogue.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 Год назад +5

      @Lee It was another case of big power levels solving everything. It's lame when that's the only thing that matters in a battle shonen. A big part of martial arts and how early DB was was that strength isn't everything. Techniques, experience, and skills mattered too. But come DBZ and even late DB, and the theme shifts to the only thing that really matters is a bigger battle number. It doesn't matter that Piccolo and Goku are better martial artists with abilities and skills that Raditz lacked. Raditz has a bigger number, so he automatically is impossible for them to beat. Sure, they eventually beat him with the makkankosappo, but that was like the last time a technique won out over Power Levels. And even then, the Makkankopotomus only worked because it gave Piccolo a higher Power Level in that moment. It wasn't like it was more effective due to being a ki drill attack that could penetrate his high defense stat or something. It was straight up making his Power Level bigger than Raditz's. Techniques like the Kienzan and Taioken should be immensely helpful at having weaker fighters overcome stronger ones, but they never work, because number not big enough.
      It's not even like they consider other stats either. All stats, Strength, Speed, Defense, Stamina, etc. are just all condensed into a single number that determines every single battle, and it's soooo lame. There isn't a case of Piccolo having less strength than Frieza but being faster than him so he can outmaneuver him. Nope, bigger number means he has to be faster, which makes Burter's "fastest in the universe" thing make no sense at all. Even to his limited knowledge, he's nowhere close to the highest power level guy, and therefore there's no way he could believe himself to be the fastest.
      And Buu screaming his way out of another dimension only "makes sense" because DB established this whole "power solves everything" precedent long before.

      @@ShadeSlayer1911 Seeing how Buu is a magical being he should have known a spell to magic himself out of there which would leave Gotenks and Piccolo being stuck there it would have given some weight to the scene to see them make a technique up to get them out of there, maybe it could be somewhat reoccurring like Instant Transmission with the drawback of having a casting time or maybe have an immense power drain. It would bypass the pitfall of "strength is all that matters" most battle shonen fall into and it would make Gotanks and Piccolo a bit more unique and useful.

    I think the Ultra-Divine Water kind of works on a couple levels. On one hand, it isn't a 'free' power-up, it's a test of endurance against the one drinking it. Endurance isn't the 'sexiest' form of power on its own merits, you really kind of have to work to make it feel meaningful, and that's arguably not handled well. With the exception of the Super Saiyan God power, though, this is the closest Goku ever gets to being 'given' power without traditionally 'working' for it; the fact that he does at least have to *suffer* for it is not nothing.
    On the other hand, this could also have been built up as the origin, or galvanization, of Goku's feelings about 'free power'. Like, he was entirely willing to get free power from the Divine Water the first time, before he knew 'the real power-up was the journey to get it', which certainly lays the groundwork for a deeper respect for personal effort over quick solutions. In theory, the Ultra-Divine Water was taking the other angle of it, but more literally, "You aren't strong enough to beat him. In order to do so, you've got to swallow the one thing most bitter for a warrior - your *pride*." In this formulation, Goku would never really feel comfortable about what he had to do to beat King Piccolo, but he'd accept that he had to do what he had to do, because it was the *world* at stake, not just 'fighting a strong guy'. It would temper his resolve to never need to resort to an easy cop-out again, which is one driver as to why he never really *stops* training from then on out, if he can help it. He never wants to need to resort to that again... only to end up backed into a corner for it with Super Saiyan God much later. If this angle was the intention, or result, it certainly could have been put on better display, and made clearer as a theme, more as something to read into things.

    Best I've seen, many people will always write off the Goku Black ending because "It's tragic" and I guess that's supposed to imply depth. I would at least get that if Toriyama said that in an interview, but best I can tell he never did. So I just have to deal with what I'm looking at, and that sentiment doesn't ring true to me. Like you said, we don't really see the consequences from the perspective of the characters. The show seemingly doesn't care about that aspect.
    I don't want to make it sound like that can't be a story down the line. But it's been 6 years since that happened and all that's come since are theories that Chronoa picked Trunks up for possibly-cannon-but-not-really Time patrol stuff. With no Mai in sight mind you because Xenoverse started before goku Black. Frankly it also doesn't help that it kind of feels like Trunks was only brought back in Super because he had been gone the longest out of any supporting Z characters and fans wanted to see him. He gets abysmal time with the Z-Fighters in Super and the Z-Fighters conveniently show up to his Future that's almost completely vacant so even less interactions. But let me get back on track.
    I think this ending isn't worth it for tragedy's sake simply because they already had the potential for this story. Trunks was raised in an apocalypse already, with all easy routes taken away for the sake of the plot. He made friends in the present that he would probably never see again and didn't for over a decade. He's the only person who is capable of protecting an entire planet. His entire life was about preparing for Androids that are now gone. That in itself, has depth that should've been explored. His mindset trying to deal with all that while doing his best to help humanity thrive. Because his mother, the smartest person on the planet, will be gone one day.
    Having Goku Black and Zamasu be the Future Andrioids times 10 just makes Trunks' entire story feel flanderized to me.

    • @StraightUpGamin
      @StraightUpGamin Год назад +8

      One addition. I'm not saying the arc was useless. The idea of a god gone rogue is interesting and Zamasu plays that well. It's just two things. 1) My criticisms are concerning Trunks. 2) With how the arcs of Super came out, perhaps the evil god idea could've came later in the series. Preferably after the tournament established all universes and their players.

    • @Haar_Dragon
      @Haar_Dragon Год назад +3

      @@StraightUpGamin ...There are people who support that ending? _Gross._
      Okay that's exaggerating a bit, but tragedy for its own sake is not a benefit, on that I agree completely. It's not quite as bad in the manga, where there's a significantly more imminent (and much less nonsensical) threat, but the feeling is very much one of "Well, there's your victory, now to write an ending such that Future Trunks can never ever ever return, say goodbye now, kids!" Never mind that said ending completely negates the satisfaction of like twelve seconds ago.
      Frankly I have no idea how anyone could say the Ultra Divine Water was worse. Yeah, it's lazy and bad, but it's not an overt slap in the face.

Kami and The Room could be introduced early by having Korin introduce Goku to Kami instead of offering the Ultra Divine Water. Goku runs into Popo first instead, and the latter doesn't think Goku is ready for tutelage under himself, much less Kami, but he compromises by letting Goku train in the room. Goku barely survives a months in the room and leaves, but the time he spent training in the harsh environment the room produces gives him the boost in power to take on King Piccolo.

For such a long running series, you'd think consistent character and narratives would be the norm but nope, you get the black arc, cell, even the tournament of power since Jiren had the opportunity to wipe out everyone with little effort but didn't specifically to "not waste his energy"
    As a matter of fact, it would be more consistent for his character to start running down the other contestants solo because he doesn't trust his team, he has the power to back up this mentality and yet he still never went for it

    For me, one of the most disappointing moments in Dragon Ball Super was finding out that Vegito has a time limit. That was the one drawback of using the Potara earrings, that the fusion was permanent. Now what's the difference between Vegito and Gogeta? Their clothes? I mean, jeez. It's not like they had to commit to Vegito staying in that form forever. They already established that the Dragon Balls can separate permanent fusions. Just do that.

      The "tingly back thing" is just channeling Ki to a point in the back. I honestly hate that they had Cabba word it like that because "haha, Cabba's a dork!" since so many people take it as fact that you can just "tickle your back to get stronger" instead of doing exactly like the 7th Universe Saiyans did. The 6th Universe Saiyans, but most damningly Cabba end up with massively unnecessary hate because of that one line. I don't have a problem with them powering up through different means since they're a different Universe altogether, and even then, Cabba just told Caulifia how he felt his Ki was channeled as a Super Saiyan, but... this is like how everyone says that Buu's body most definitely has a weird atmosphere that caused them to unfuse instead of a more reasonable "You're not Supreme Kai, so it ain't permanent kids" revision we got in Super.

This background info does make the decision make more sense, but doesn't change the fact that this portion of the arc was problematic. Personally, it would've been better had Toriyama just had Gohan finish the arc as originally intended, then had Goku come back for a short arc to finish the story.

    For the Goku Black saga, I am pretty sure the writers wanted it to end that way to establish that Zeno both had the power to destroy the entire multiverse, and is willing to do so if he deems it necessary, to help establish the potential stakes of the Tournament of Power later down the line as opposed to just being informed by a third party that Zeno can do this. That being said, I feel it would have been better if the situation reached the point where Zeno had to get involved not because of Zamasu lucking into the fact that his immortality let him fuse with the universe, but instead that story went down in a way where Zamasu outwitted the heroes. I feel like the story would have been stronger with the themes of a magical/fantastical arms race, where the heroes would bring back some underused or one-off trick, only for Zamasu and Goku Black to pull out a trick of their own that they collected in the decades, if not centuries, leading up to them executing their plan. Trunks uses the time machine to try get help from the main timeline, only for Goku Black to have already used the Time Ring to recruit another Zamasu, as well as to chase him back to the main timeline, Goku uses instant transmission to try to evade Zamasu and develop a plan, only for Zamasu to use the Kai Kai to chase him, a teleportation technique unique to the gods and basically better than Instant Transmission in every way, Goku and Vegito fuse to try and beat their enemies with overwhelming power, only for Black and Vegito to fuse as well, and their fusion doesn't have a time limit to impede them, etc. This climaxes with Trunks destroying Fused Zamasu, only for it to be revealed that Zamasu had a contingency plan in case of his death, as while his mind and soul has been destroyed, the purple mutated flesh his body was turning into remains, and is now being guided by the dredges of Zamasu endless hatred of mortals to try and spread as much as possible, to until it consumes and destroys the entire multiverse. With the heroes having no way to stop the spread of the flesh in time, this is when Zeno enters the picture to destroy the timeline as a preventive measures to remove the potential of it spreading to other timelines. This, as well as Trunks sticking around for the Tournament of Power to try and use the Super Dragonballs to restore his timeline, would have done a lot to address the biggest flaws of the Goku Black arc in my opinion.
