That kind of "snappy punching" where you learn to keep your hands relaxed and only tense the fist up just before impact is taught in Wing Chun as well as JKD. The whole idea is that up until you've decided you're punching you're just sending the _elbow_ straight forward, leaving the hand free to decide what it will be, be it punch, finger jab, palm strike, wrist block, or a grab.
In WC forms you learn to send the elbow forward all the time, with your hand doing all the aforementioned shapes. I remember my instructor telling me to look at it like a hammer drill - your elbow does the hammering and your hand is a drill bit that you can swap whenever you please. That way, keeping your punches relaxed but always powered from the hip becomes easier as you move about. In fact, that is one of the bigger reasons why WC forms are generally done in a very slow, almost meditative way, as it helps you sync up your breath and learn proper technique in higher resolution, much like a musician learning a difficult passage.

Great work, Shane. You make a good point about the structural difference between the boxing and Muay Thai stances. I love Muay Thai but man is the footwork plodding. There's absolutely no reason why it can't be as balanced and agile as boxing's. Always good to practice both.

This is very, very good, in particular the focus on relaxation and movement. The only time you set is throwing the combination and then you move immediately.
Why? Your head should never be in the same place, and you don't want to be predictable.
The comment about skipping rope is great - that's *exactly* the type of movement. A great way to simulate this is move around a bit when you skip.

  • @shellfaith8432

Shane, pronating the punch, as in sport boxing, is faster punch, but opens the rotator cuff, separating the shoulder from the structural support, thus hard impact is completely absorbed into the rotator cuff joint which is responsible for epidemic of rotator cuff surgeries in hard hitting boxers. My shoulders' surgeon explained this to me. Jack Dempsey taught the old school boxing methodology for punching, which is slightly slower but minimizes rotator cuff injuries by keeping the shoulder locked into the structural support of the body. Timing supersedes speed, giving the illusion of being faster, so don't worry about losing a bit of speed by abandoning the pronation methodology for the superior, non-telegraphical, better structural connection of the Dempsey method. Also when you pronate your punches notice your elbow telegraphs your punch in this video. The old school Dempsey punch doesn't telegraph the punch cause the elbow remains down. A good video demonstration of this can be seen in a video of Michael Jai White teaching Kimbo Slice on a movie set. Timing y technique supersede speed. Just some knowledge from an old head once was. BTW:The old school method punching, as discussed in Dempseys book Championship Fighting, prevents boxer's fractures.

A drill you can also do for closing your hand before landing a strike is throw a pen in the air and catching in a punching motion.

There’s a workout for throwing harder and faster punches that I feel like people should know. Get a semi light weight dumbbells and get on a bench(lying on ur back). Pretty much throw punches like u would with the dumbbells but there’s a twist Hold one dumbbell half way and try not to move it when u punch with the other arm and switch after 5 reps.(don’t stop switch right away)

Well good old heavy bags punch are more practical for me. Just look at my old schools bag, boy that's hell of fun way to relief your school days stresses, oh wait that's my mathematics teacher.

Sounds very similar to a 1 arm DB press

Lol that's just bad for elbows

@@RM-ur8ij Yeah any more than 1kg but i mean i can punch with 1kg weights without fucking up my elbows since i know when to pull the punch back. It really helps with speed and endurance but anything more than 1 kg is too much for shoulders and elbows

For beginners, focus on speed and accuracy first. The power will naturaly come once you practice enough.
