Good job with these videos.. Seems like you really care about martial arts and it's cool that you're willing to share your knowledge with everyone. A lot of your training techniques have helped me with form and the drills you suggest work really well.
Pretty good close guard and giving great pointers on how hand level affects things but different fighting techniques affects what guard will be most effective as well. Nonetheless that guard is pretty great and likely the most tried and true one out there
Excellent!!! Thanks Shane! This is such a critical and essential lesson! I studied kung fu for 20 years. I'm 54. Now I just independently work out for health, fitness and to keep self defense ready. My security job does, more often than not, require me to subdue people. You are a great instructor and I'm implementing your tips into my work outs! THANKS!!! Kevin.

Really appreciate the tips. Just so happens I’m only recently putting a lot more focus on my guard despite doing martial arts for almost 17 years. Thanks again

Love your channel you’re one of the only guys talking about MMA boxing kick boxing and martial arts that isn’t arrogant to other styles others may knock off and you genuinely know what you’re talking about you may never be a pro fighter but you definitely are a fighter good work keep it up bro
This is a great BOXING guard for sure and is a sound overall guard. Be great to see a video explaining mma guard, thai guard and also the low, medium and high guards. They all have their place in combat sports and fights.
Cheers Shane for always uploading good tip videos I'm relatively new to boxing and have learnt so much just from your videos much love from Australia bro
Man, I just can't thank you enough for the valuable information you provide us on a golden plate right here, great job, and god bless you and your family :)
Great video as always. I would add though, from a Krav Maga/street fighting point of view, we hold our hands not only up but out. This way we can defend earlier and also more effectively from weapons. If your hands are too close to your face, you can get punched by your own hands. But more important a knife's extended reach may get past your guard. Different perspective than ring fighting, but I think worth discussing.
Yeah in Muay Thai your guard should be pressed against your head if your not using the long guard so you don’t punch yourself. Also if some dude pulls a knife I’m not pulling guard I’m sprinting.
This is a GREAT video for beginners. I hope all beginners watch this. I agree shane I use the same type of guard, I train Muay thai; I like keeping my hands at high cheek level just below the eyes, or on my forehead if Im expecting punches to come at my head or kicks. Had class last night in fact, 3 rounds of sparring against 3 different guys, it went great. My defense was esp good, and I worked my offense well BECAUSE of my good defense - prefer catching strikes on my guard and checking kicks with leg raise or my guard. My coach was my hardest fight last night, as always since hes the best in my gym. I recommend everyone use this type of guard, Ive been using it for years and its served me well, its great for defending quickly and efficiently, its not fancy but it works, and lets you counter quickly after blocking or covering or parrying or catching. Forearms/elbows rests on your body, they should be generally straight, protecting your face and body, tucked in.
The best guard is an adapting one. There will always be a part of your body that isn’t completely covered. Being able to go from guarding your head to guarding your body is paramount.
I recommend a longer guard for self defense. You can’t block super effectively without gloves but you can still parry almost as effectively if not more in many situations
i recently just saw a school fight between two girls, their guards were horrible and i just realized mine is as well, i never wish to be in a situation where i don't know how to defend myself or where im am not able to get out of, but this helped a tone!
my muay thai coach always called my guard "the chicken wing" because i liked to expose my ribs to catch kicks hahaha, not the best way but just an old bad habit that i had to fix
This video was very helpful and practical. I've been watching some of your other stuff too with heavy bag work and I love the great form I see. Subbed! 👊😁
@@alexdriftersupraman the speed bag is different, it has a board above it so the bag bounces back off that. The double end bag is for striking where the speed bag is for rhythm and speed
Don't let up on the heavy bag. Speed and accuracy. Concentrate on that first. Your wrists will eventually become iron, that's when you start developing a good power punch. Keep the feet moving, never crossing.
Next time do a video about spinning backfists and some other variations of it (fake low kick lead by a spinning backfist, etc.). It would be so useful as these "punches" are a very good element of surprise, in my opinion.
This might be good practice within a controlled, boxing-ring environment. However, in a street fight situation, if your hands are up to eyebrow level and your neck is slightly crunched, then your opponent, acting on pure adrenaline, probably will see this as an impetus just to charge at you and take you down to the ground (especially if they're not trained, which many street-fighters aren't). I think it's important to keep in mind, also, that formalizing your guard so precisely also telegraphs to your opponent the range of possible strikes you're going to be capable of making.
I use these techniques when I ask my wife, "why can't you do 'X' like your sister?"
