    Very informative! Lately I've been sparring successfully with your "normal" stance and wanted to combine it tomorrow with a high guard for close range so this video came just in time. Thanks!

    Great video. You mentioned Winky Wright and Arthur Abrahams as two guys who went to the top with the high guard. Quite right. The one that comes to my mind in more recent times is, of course, Canelo Alvarez. He can do everything, but he does like to walk guys down while he uses the high guard. It's a classic example of carrying one's hand high to create offensive opportunities. One of his favourite tactics is to walk in, bait people to throw and then counter ferociously. He does actually sometimes slip backwards (I've heard it called "the pullback counter"), but without making the errors that you identified, namely standing upright, chin up in the air, etc. It also creates momentum for the counter itself.

    Joshua clottey, Marlon starling, John Scully, and if we're looking at mma as well, Petr Yan. Chito Vera uses it when hes in trouble

    Although I've been doing kickboxing for years, I had my nose broken in sparring due to a bad high guard position (and obviously my sparring partner being inconsiderate). This video helped me a lot to correct my high guard, thanks. Please add more videos about guards and counterattacks when we fight an aggressive person and have to deal with hard punches if you can.

    Usyk, Loma and Bam Rodriguez all use the high guard very effectively. They're in constant motion slipping left and right when doing it setting up counters off the back of it.

    • @RottenProfits
      @RottenProfits 5 месяцев назад

      incorrect. they use a pendulum bounce and most of their defence is created by using footwork, also they fence with the lead hand while always having the backhand tucked to the chin.

    Good advice. A russian coach recommended raising your shoulders (shrugging up one side) in the high guard to defend against hooks.
    A lot of my sparring partners complain there are no openings due to my long arms. But like you said, most people hold their hands up too high.
    A lot of people make the mistake of not being active with the guard too. They'll try not to take steps back which us stupid imo.
    I feel that if you use the high guard exclusively you have to have a great jab and be a phenomenal pressure fighter.

    I use it too often almost a reflex as soon as there's a combo im not 100% sure what's coming it's my default go to i reckon it's limiting me

    • @tonypaella
      @tonypaella 5 месяцев назад +2

      Personally I don't think your reflex is wrong. If you can't tell what's coming I'd say it's the right move. Just don't stay in that shell, tuck your chin and punch back. You'll either hit them while they're on offense, which will hurt them, or they will at least be more careful because they'll be afraid of your counters. That will give you more room to get your own offense going.

      You’re not obliged to watch them. The racism is also completely unnecessary. Mexicans and blacks don’t exclusively excel in boxing. Britain had an excellent history of world champions for such a small nation. As does Japan. As do the Eastern block nations. As do other latino nations. Best bet for you is yo educate yourself better and focus less on race and more on understanding what you’re discussing. Disappointed you took it down this route.
