  • I've had so many questions from subscribers to speak on the high guard with mma gloves. I normally focus on training with boxing gloves but since I'll be transition to Karate Combat glove (5.5 oz) I figured this is the perfect time to give you my thoughts.

    Practicing using small gloves naturally made my guard exactly how you mention... One hand pressed at the face for defence, and the second hand outside for range. Funny that it just came naturally and ended up being exactly what you recommended

    I’ve been waiting for this video. As a kick-boxer who also trains for self defence building the habit of high guard left me doubtful to if I would resort to that in a street fight and it wouldn’t work without gloves. Fighters like Yan showed me that it’s possible.

      Also I’ve seen Gabriel’s vid on street defence and his tips are pretty similar to what is taught in wing Chun which is pretty interesting.

    high guards in mma are effective if you have very good reflexes to properly change the position of your hands to deflect shots, and you need to mesh it with parrying

    I really like the in-between guard, I train for fun and self defense and do a lot of bareknuckle trying to imitate realistic scenarios. I'm pretty decent at parrying so IMO in between guard ( or something like the muay Thai long guard ) is best for me cause its good for blocking and transitioning to grappling, trapping, locking and whatever else I like to do. Love this channel, absolutely GOLD content, and love the fact that you're so decorated AND so humble.

    I have never been a fan of the pillow joke when some people said "nice pillow, you can't defend like that in real fights" but this subject indeed very interesting to talk about. Personally, i hate high guard 2 hands close to head, especially with the way they teach it in Boxing, kickboxing.... Keep your hands up all the time does not let you snuff out a takedown with the underhook. It's always the best option to just use a hybrid guard that keep one arm out like long guard and one close to the face while keeping your stance low like Gabriel demonstrated. The only time should you ever cover your entire face with both hands like in boxing, kickboxing is when they're smashing you on the ground and you're in bottom position

      Even in boxing I don’t prefer it. Old time greats like SRR and Joe Louis used one hand in front to block and the rear hand in front of the jaw to deflect and parry but not to the side of the face. While also shifting their shoulders towards the side of the rear foot. Any pictures of these old time boxers in their stance and you’ll see what i mean. Not like this helmet guard that puts your face right down the centre line.
      A good example of this stance used in more modern boxing is Bernard Hopkins, had his right shoulder lowered towards his rear foot, other left shoulder high to protect his chin, right hand in front of his jaw to parry, and left in front to block and fire quick jabs.

      Depends on your body type tbh. If you are long and skinny high guard in MMA will leave you with many wholes striking-wise, and unless you are very good at takedown defense and scrambling, like Yan is, being susceptible to them. However for shorter stickier fighter high guard covers most of the head, and it can work as a frame takedown defense.

  • @GabrielVargaOfficial

    What do you think about the high guard in MMA? Is it safe and worth training or are you better off dropping the hands and relying on footwork and head movement?

    • @Nergal123
      @Nergal123 2 года назад +10

      Layered defense is best. Good to know

    as someone with a background in karate getting into mma, this video is huge for me. i didn't learn to properly high close guard in karate and DEFINITELY felt that in my first few sparring rounds, attempting to block everything with my lead arm in a long guard Does Not Work (as often as attempted, at least), being able to shell up and properly defend in close guard is HUGE.

    It seems to me that a lot of the stuff people criticize Boxing for due to it not being ideal for kickboxing then becomes useful again in MMA. More head movement, level changes as a part of head movement that can feint a takedown ie Khabib v Conor, being less upright, etc…

    that's crazy I once saw a video from back in the day and Oscar de la Hoya also mentioned that he keeps his hands as open as he could while wearing the gloves even when he swing a punch he closes the hand as it is turning the hand into a punch and into the target the same thing with he elbow block lol. he had this one hook u had to be aware of because the way he threw the hook the elbow was coming behind it so u had to watch out for the left hook and elbow coming behind it and it wasn't a foul because it was all in one movement de la Hoya said the elbow kept people from coming in if they pushed forward they ran into his arm learned alot front hsi video very very informative

    I tried and tried high guard. It just wasn't for me . I cant resist parries. Just taking punches feels completely wrong. But when someone actually broke past the wall of jab i used to crumble.
    Then i found reverse cross guard for close range . Do all the same things ass long gaurd but with fore arms and elbow. Found its best to be jhon jones . Fight all the way on the outside. But if the break threw go forward and just go elbow crazy. All the way in or all the way out . Never mid range ever.
