Coming from a boxing background, I started MMA last year and I noticed that a lot of guys are very good grapplers, but their standup struggles because they lack these fundamentals . I recommend this video to all of my grappling guys. Great video, man.
I have this very stubborn friend named Paul who thinks that striking is useless because Judo "thought of every possible strike that could be thrown and how to counter it". He can effectively punch someone without hurting himself, but every time I offer to take him to my MMA gym, he simply declines saying that he doesn't really need to work on his striking. But the fact is, he couldn't set up an angle for a punch if his brother's life depended on it, so maybe you could give me a few words of advice that could help me convince him that striking IS necessary.
@@АлтайскийКазак Maybe you should point out that a huge amount of people have died by just one punch. You, have to realize it only takes one punch for a knock out (concussion) and then further brain trauma with your head bouncing off the ground. That's how most people are killed. I'll add this a reality based self defense systems founder I follow named Tim Larkins said he used to collect news articles of people who died by one strike. Well, after he started going over a hundred he stopped putting in the effort. Oh, furthermore another suggestion is with the strikes you don't see and you need to make some distance to get your bearings and come back with your own attacks. I say this from seeing video footage of people being hit in the back of the head. They were knocked out in these cases, but that doesn't mean that's a given. So if you're not knocked out via a strike like that you need footwork to regain your composure and escape that standing still for further attacks. Hope this helps, because I really feel for you. It's like he should just try it out with you, it's not a big commitment.

Awesome! Thanks dude, I started with kickboxing a couple of years back and now doing just boxing. This is something that Ive always struggled with and was never able to adress it specifically. Hopefully I can improve with these drills. Thank you so much
I reaaaaally love the way you describe steps. It's almost eerie how often I follow a step and say, "what about this" and as if you heard me you address that very concern in your next statement. Very effective skill training!
Wow, really love the "diamond step" stepping to the side and striking. I've been doing another method that fully turns you out to the side. It's great for leaving the range of strikes but doesn't let you be in range for your own striking. So yeah, will have to take that into my shadow boxing work.
Shanes the best man he answers all the questions I have ...no one ever touches on important stuff like this. At my gym when i ask questions like this ppl treat me like I'm being rediculous and complicating things too much and being overly difficult but its important to me...

I have a kick boxing fight in 2 months and I have to work on my footwork . This video helped me understand some things that I was doing wrong. Thenks for helping me keep up the good work
This helped me so much after a few months of training and watching these I can truly feel and see the difference from a few months ago I'm able to step in and out quicker than ever I don't feel awkward when I circle as I throw my 3 punch combo I know when to step and cut ao much better
I'm no fighter but just watching this made me get up and do it. One thing; "puppet string" - elbow is slightly forward of knee and ankle alignment. Great lesson. Thank you. Hit through the target not on the target.
I practice these but didn’t know the names. Gazelle punch (mike Tyson hook) leaping hook Diamond step (switch feet) moving feet 45 degrees rear is forward and lead is back-like a skip...got it ! TY
Beautiful and well explained video. Well done Shane. I´m a kickboxing beginner and I always struggle with my footwork. It´s definitely harder to learn how to move correctly and coordinate your feet than your arms.
So glad I found your channel. You are an excellent teacher who breaks down every move clearly. I wish I had a coach like you back when I wrestled in high school.
this was a good video, in kenpo I learn a lot of "classical" footwork for forms that I never use in sparring, and this corrected a lot of the mistakes i was making
Shane, this is absolutely outstanding instruction in terms of articulation, demonstration, video quality, and forethought. The point about right-cross pivot with foot in midair, to lessen friction and increase power transmission, is exactly the kind of granular observation I look for now. I've been working on boxing a long time (now 74, started decades ago), and have learned extremely valuable advantages from watching your videos. Keep 'em coming please!
thank you this is so heloful!! i am a beginner in boxing. Often times i hear people say we shd pivot our rear foot just like putting out a cigarette. I did that for a while and it hurts my feet . i find your version of pivoting mid air and then step much more sound and powerful. thatnk you for your explanations!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, i had some shadow boxing training today and i got stuck with what to do and what to train on. next time i'm definitely trying those.

I’ve been training Muay Thai and boxing for about 7 years, and recently got into mma. I think that footwork is the missing link in most fighters styles. It’s not just about moving a lot and shuffling like ali, it’s about using your feet to do just enough to accomplish a purpose, whether it is to go in and out of striking range, or to put yourself in an advantageous position to attack. Most people overdo it, to the point where most of it is just spending energy for no reason at all, and exaggerate the motions, or just stand still, like a punching bag, waiting to sidestepped. In my opinion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, Lomachenko, Joe Louis, and Willie Pep are the ones to look at. Economical, precise, purposeful, and near-flawless
Great video. When you watch a lot if trainers hold mitts all they do is stay in one spot and the person throws combos without moving. Good pad holders will always teach and train there students to move their feet while throwing combos more fight specific.
Great lesson! The 2 I find the most practical here is the "puppet string" and the "diamond step". Definitely something I would add to my training repoirtoire. It would be cool if you do a breakdown video of the diamond step but from a first person POV so it would be easier to grasp
I always wondered if pivoting mid air and landing like that was correct because no one told me to do it but I did it instinctually after a while so I'm glad it is a real technique
