Boxing Range Control: Tall vs Short Sparring Strategy
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 май 2019
- The ability to manage range is one of the single-most important aspects in #boxing. Coach PJ & Shane talk about range zones 1-4, and how to control the distance as either the taller or shorter fighter. Whether you want to fight on the outside and use your jab, or get in close to work the body, it's all dictated by who can control the range!

👊Thank you for thinking of the tall people too.✊
This video is oerfect for me too! At 1.74m i have to face people shorter and taller than me xD
gingercore69 same at 180
@@gingercore69 Same I'm also 174-5cm
Yes! Every video “how to beat a bigger taller opponent”
1.95 wassup
Would love to see a Kickboxing version of this. Leg kicks change things up alot.
fizman22 not as much as you’d think. The zones are the same, but the sizes are the different
It does change afew things up alot you cant really come in effectively like a boxer against a kickboxing you will end up eating front kicks and knees
I went against a 5ft 10 person and im 5ft 4 and i ended up knocking him on the ground this was in muay Thai
@@leviathan2303 ok…
@@leviathan2303
I am regularly sparring with a 6’3 dude and I’m 5’8, in mma (Muay Thai specifically), and while he can jab or knee.
-
I can definitely do Mike Tyson’s peekaboo to close in, and work the body predominantly or throw an overhand hook to mix things up.
-
The biggest thing I learned is that if you want to step in, or to the side when jabbing, then keep a hand glued to your cheek.
This is a defensive thing, in case you are not fast enough to slip under his 1,2,3 or if he throws uppercuts, like shown in this video.
-
Best wishes from a 5’8 martial artist with 1.5y experience.
I have fought at -78kg, -72kg and -66kg.
Mike tyson was probably the most dangerous man in the "danger zone"
He was REALLY dangerous with what they call here, a "gazelle punch". Mike could do it to both sides, cuz he was equally devastating with both hands.
Not probably HE WAS
@@teeoh9192 his footwork was some of the best in his prime.
WITHOUT A DOUBT! In his prime, he had no weak spots. POWERFULLY ambidextrous, quick, strong as a mule, footwork, head movement, in a practically impenetrable peek-a-boo defense. Jeez...@@grohlski8669
His left and right hand was equally heavy. Could get knocked out both ways.
Expect to see these techniques in the Canelo vs Jacobs fight!
Ayyyy Wassup Shane!
lol this comment was so accurate
Gil Lopez I know I’m late but that fight was trash
Ree Ree you thought it was trash cuz jacobs lost. That fight was a pretty good fight canelo was putting on a show
You're both incredibly articulate, feels like being in an academy! OSSS
by far one of the best videos. addressed both fighters- tall and short- and both groups of people training- solo and partners. amazing, i love this.
A little disappointed Coach PJ didn’t say his signature “aww yeah” lol Great video though.
Just got into boxing, and while sparring with larger opponents I was shocked at how hard it was to close distance. This video was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.
Definately enjoyed this. I prefer when my coaches speak while demonstrating which is something some teachers cant do but both you guys do well👌
This helps a lot. There's so few videos that break down, simply and clearly, the basics of fighting like range control. Bravo!
Really needed this, thank you Shane 👍
One drill I like to do when I’m training in my martial arts club (I practice Chinese Kenpo) works similarly to the resistance band heavy bag drill, but instead of a heave bag and resistance band we’re tied to our sparring partner by our belts, this not only helps us with moving in and out of different ranges but it also stops people from moving straight back because it’s a bad habit to develop in a fight.
this was dope. always have an issue with getting in. thanks guys!
Finally a great range tactics video for taller guys as well. The best combat content on youtube as always Shane keep it up
I love these videos and as a shorter fighter than most of my opponents it really make me think about what and why i am doing the things i am doing.
Yo thanks coach pj and Shane, this video helped my boxing a lot!
You guys are such good teachers and talkers. I don’t know a subject on this earth I can talk so clearly about
Very nice body control and technique, Shane, when presenting the solo inside boxing technique.
Great video! Love tactics/strategy videos on Boxing. Thank you!
Thank you Shane and Coach PJ
Your videos are so helpful! Please keep it up, you guys are awesome.
These videos are golden. I learn so much from watching this again after a year.
Great video i have a match tomorrow def going to try to use some of this depending on the opponents build! 🥊
Wow I ran across the channel far one of the best channels on how to actually fight.experience speaks for it self keep those videos coming
Great stuff guys, I’ve had a few small town barn boxing matches with no training. You guys are really teaching me some class! Keep it up thanks a lot!
amazing vid thanks !
Wonderful! Thank you guys verrrrrry much. Very very helpful!
Awesome Content as usual, more tall People stuff would be very cool! Keep up the great work!!
Good work men I love these new drills I’m gonna most definitely do them! I mess with the resistance bands🥊🏋️♀️🏃
Love this kind of content shane! More boxing tips
The resistance band on the bag is a brilliant idea I never seen that done thank you for the demonstration .
Great video I’m gonna start using my size to a better advantage than before thanks to this vid.
more videos like this please shane!! ring craft is so important!!
thanks very helpful i’m usually scared of sparring with my y’all friend but now that i know these tips i can put them to the test !!!! 💪🏻💪🏻
LOVED THAT! ♥
By far one of the best vidéo,
Very good explication from very good fighter.
Love your job bro
Well done,another quality video
I only watched 2 videos and I've learned so much
okay is it just me or is this guy AWSOME short people till the end 👑
Great breakdown of the different zones in boxing
You guys are great teachers. Thumbs up
Ive always needed help on my range, thanks for helping me with it :)
Very useful tips.
Nice video man!
Good stuff guys...
I have 2 new drills to add to my routine...
Great explanation as well
Amazing guys, thank you so much
Excellent tips for a helpful thank you
Nice explanation!
It felt weird hearing it laid out so detailed. I’m used to getting on the pads and just being told to do it, then being corrected if something is off
This was the best eye opener I've seen
Great video Shane as always. I learn so much whenever I am on your Chanel and it really aids my training so thank you. I defiantly think that you should have a sparing session with coach pj though - would be good to see some rounds.
I also just found out that you follow one of my coaches on instagram - that’s so cool! :) xx
Very good vid!!!
These zones i learned in karate. Pretty good tips SEhan.
Perfect move dude
Shane Fazen is my favorite coach and mixed martial artist of all time ❤ big fan ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
can't wait to try this out. my training partners are taller and shorter than me. so i gotta learn to control that range better,
U guys are the best thanks you...
Thank you 🙏🏽
4:50 great idea
Frikkin love coach pj
The "magnet" drill is something that the HEMA group that I go to does every class too, though the range changes based on what weapon we have that day. Nice to see it in unarmed as well.
Hi love your all vids
5:45 Gazelle Punch
Makunouchi! Makunouchi! Makunouchi!
great video!! i was struggling to be close enough to a guy i was sparring with that is taller than me, i'll try using this in my next sparring session
Great drills
Now I know how to beat up my big brother when we spar! thanks fight tips, another great insight!
Did you beat him
@@trombonetribute6433 nope
@@wootman8133 Lol ok
I have that Ben Franklin quote taped onto my computer. Love it
Benny was a british spy
We need part 2 pj & shane
Love it 👍👍
Mah boy shane lettin his beard grow looking clean
More videos like this please!
One of my favorite parts of boxing besides the great workout is the strategy and technique.
This ones a gem right here
I'd love to see more range control and drills but for MMA and kickboxing, "Iron" Mike Zambidas is still one of my favorite kickboxers of all time and at 5'6 he developed a great, powerful style against taller, longer and often much bigger opponents.
He should fight in the whole youtube boxing scene
Mr. Shane you are the best 💪💪👌👏👏
It’s lil Mac vs Mike Tyson
Lil MAC is a beassst
Thanks guys
Hey Shane! You should do a video showing a shorter fighter set up the overhand punch. Thanks man
Good video bro. Can you also make a video about range control in kickboxing and mma?
Masters of zone 3 fighting for me are Lennox Lewis and Stipe Drvis
Think I'll be buying a resistance band tomorrow. That was cool.
Shane has a very good form. Keep the faith!
The more I watch these videos motivation comes to become a trainer.
I have to be in zone 2 because most of the fighters I fight are taller and longer reach so I practice a lot of defensive play in zone 3 and when I see an opportunity I get in zone 2 and I can hit them.
Sooo Mike Tyson style pretty much👌🏻
The Reaper yeah but not as good as him
@@giovanyvelazquez1047 Well thats almost impossible.BUT it is possible
The Reaper nothing is impossible brother
Great video, can you do one similar but for either judo or beginning of a jujitsu match?
This was a really good vdo. I am 5'5", was sparing and actually dislocated my sholder throwing a right hook to the head, out of range , (or maybe he just slipped my punch.) Havent been back since Janurary but should be soon. Now I have an idea what to work on when I spar again. Thanks.
Do a video of the taller fighter working inside
Rebel416 Gaming-LifeTalk yes please! They always only do smaller people vs taller people from the smaller people’s side but we taller people aren’t automatically magical super boxers
@@gfgnickname_not_chosen2598 did you guys ever find that video ? Or any tips on that
Hey Shane, big fan of fight tips , I’ve been watching for a long time but with all do respect Im almost sure the longest punch is the rear cross. Which seems counter intuitive because it’s in the rear but it actually should have an extra inch or two to follow through with because of that rotation .( when considering the average fight stance)
Thanks Shane, very, very useful for me. I train Krav Maga and as a small female I often have to spar with much taller and stronger people. I am the typical underdog and your videos give me a lot of tools I can use. Super!!
All the best heidi
Yo!! Are you still doing these videos and training? I am new to boxing and just discovered your videos.
Love your work and tips 👌🔥
Yes sir!
Nice vidéo
Damn! How I been watchin these videos for years & am not subscribed? That’s my bad!
Love this, guys. I’m curious though, what kind of modifications would you make for bare knuckle/street fighting? Boxing punches often get a bad wrap for breaking dude’s hands, and the difference in punching surface cause different effects on the body when you hit someone with your knuckles vs gloves, so do you feel these tactics would still work if the person didn’t have gloves or wraps on? I’m also assuming that grappling changes the game too, so I’m really curious to see how strikers can use or defend against grappling techniques while trying to close or create distance.
hey shane you have great video on heavy bag but i don't have one I have a bob can you make a video of drills to do on a bob thanks love your vids
3:54 he plants his left foot and you're done
i boxed my friend and would love some feedback!! i wanna take boxing seriously and get better thanks shane 🙏🏽🙏🏽🥊
I usually chiil in zone three , not because im tall, but because i have really long arms, as a Muay Thai kickboxer ill play the counter game , conserving my energy, until i need to use my boxing skills
You are moving like Vasyl Lomachenko 👌
I’m having a boxing match with one of my friends for a $200 prize. He’s like 6’ and I’m 5’5. He’s a lot taller and bigger than me. We boxed before and I ended up rocking his ass with an overhand right straight to the mouth. He hit the floor like a sack of taters lmao. He says it was lucky, and it might have been. But this time he’ll be prepared. I’m definitely using stuff from this video, this time. It’s gonna be recorded also. I’ll update and maybe upload the video afterwards lol wish me luck😂
Will Zamudio Well, what happens Will was it lucky 😂
Great tips! Thank you so much! I have my first boxing spar today and I’m pretty nervous. I’m 5’10, 232lbs and 68.5 wingspan. I feel like I am at a such a disadvantage, but we will see.
Jeez bro you're a little overweight don't you think so? You'd be better losing that weight specially if it's mostly fat, no disrespect tho blessings
Your gonna wanna drop well down under 200, 69" reach and 5'10 is 155 to 170 frame (mma divisions would be lightweight and welterweight) and even at 70 your gonna be the shorter guy in height and reach. Use your power, crowd your opponent so they can't keep you at the end of there punches. maintain a high tight guard and don't waste much energy on jabs and WORK THE BODY!Your gonna need to be a power pocket boxer. Fight em in a phone booth. That's the begginers guide to fire hydrant fighting!!!! Hope your still at it!!!!!
