  • @47reload
    @47reload 7 лет назад +11

    I really enjoyed this video - I spar in kickboxing (not too experienced yet) and although i'm 6ft tall, I end up fighting people a few inches taller than me and it definitely brings up challenges of getting to the angle and distance where i can safely start landing some decent shots. A big problem i run into is getting flustered and overwhelmed when the taller opponent starts smothering me and landing shot after shot, even if I guard up it's hard to get out of there and find my bearings again. It's very disorienting.
    Do you have any tips for getting out of those moments ?

    The tips are useful however there was one thing that was overlooked. You don't always have to go forward and cut the distance as the shorter fighter. You can let the taller fighter come to you using educated footwork and give up his own reach. In this video Chris talked about Floyd Mayweather vs Diego Corrales and Floyd did exactly that. Stayed away from Diego and every time he gave up his reach Floyd was connecting. Another great fight where the shorter man won by moving laterally and backwards was the Terrence Crawford vs Victor Postol fight. Cheers!

      Basically the most important thing I took from this is use your jab to distract the taller man while your trying to get in while protecting your head with either your other hand or head movement and then go ham on him from inside is reach for has long has you can because their punches from close are generally weaker.

    3. Keeping opponents lead hand bussy and using head movement to distract your opponent of the fact that you passed the critical distance line

      @andrewkelly6444 4 года назад

      That depends, if you go straight for the legs, it won't work if he is planted. If you do a little misdirection though, it would. For example, if you manage to get on the inside, Go for a throat grab with your left arm so his focus is there, but then put your body weight with the momentum, and try to sweep his legs out if his he is not in stance where his legs are too far apart.

    Lot of help this video showed me. I’m 5’11, just sparred my first tall, like tall opponent. Tallest usually I’ve fought is 6’2 which isn’t much difference, but today I fight a guy whose not just very experienced, but very tall. He’s 6’4 1/2, 80 inch reach, just ate me up with his jab. It was a friendly spar, he nor I hit eachother at 50-70% power. But I definitely needed to understand what I could do to improve. Cuz I feel like I missed opportunity during some moments. Next week I’m gonna come in better. There’s no winner or loser, just knowledge.

    THANK YOU, CHRIS!!!!!!! The first tip you gave was nearly the opposite of what I had understood to be the normal strategy against taller opponents; and it has made my ability handle taller guys so, so much better. I have very long arms for my height, so I have developed a long game that works well against people my size, but whenever I sparred with someone bigger, I found myself trying to use a style that I'm not comfortable with. I don't bob & weave and stay in the pocket like Tyson. But just by peppering their guard with straights and high kicks I have found that they no longer hang out just outside my range and inside of their where they can pick their shots. Instead, they hang out OUTSIDE both of our ranges and dart in; allowing me to use the same counter strikes I normally use with smaller guys!

      It's pretty much implied, and stated, in the video what the taller person needs to do along with the shorter person. Keep distance, work the jab often and tie up if the shorter guy gets in close.

      Use your punches as a defense and use different footworks. With these two you will have great zoning defense that shorter guy won't be able to go in most of the time.

    When you can grapple, I'd recommend going for throws. With most of them, you need to get your centre of mass below that of your opponent, so when you're smaller, your opponent will have a much harder time.

    Im 5’7...had an even street fight with someone who is 6’3 (both drunk)...neither of us really landed any good stikes (besides his sucker punch). But when i sparr bigger / stronger dudes, i dont clinch (unless this person has no martial art skills or isnt a fighter) & if you do clinch, strike quick..knees to the body, balls, let an uppercut or hook towards the upper jaw blast. Being drunk when i was fighting this person a lot taller than me...if you know any ground game (considering your street oppentent is hammered..like we were & just basically hockey fighting & not landing anythinv lol), but i saw grass & clinched up..took him to the ground, was under him but had him in full guard & was nearly about to have him a a guillatine choke...but the bigger guy ontop realized he couldnt move & knew i was good on the ground..so when i got one of my hands around his neck & and almost locked im the guilltine choke..he bit my ear, luckly a friend realized...pulled him off, i was drink and chased him several blocks with a shovel lmao but thats reflecting on stupid late teen stories.
    Although i think against a taller oppentent you should never lead with your right (unless its a clear cut counter strike), and use your leg kicks & front snap/push kicks..or kick to the balls or knees. Always think of a fight as life or death..too many different bad things can happen in street fights, so if possible, avoid at all costs..& if you have no choise, knee’s/kicks the the balls always works, strikes to the solarplex, upper cut palm strkes/palm stikes to the nose or around the ear where the jaw bone connects..even headbutts if their right in ur face (aim for their nose) & follow with a straight punch to the solarplex & knee to the balls...that should give you time run away from your attacker. But against a anyone..especially someone taller...Never lead with your right unless it is a counter strike. But keep them at bay with front kicks of different levels..attack the knees..rarely go high with any kick on the street..if u slip or he catches that..youre totally fucked..you’ll do more damage with one good straight/round house kick to the knee than a high kick when your out clubbing in tight clothes & on cement, where its not fun to break-fall..than deal with being kicked or having a dude bigger than you throwing punches down at you..keep ur distance, use your kicks, strike when the opportunity presents itself..also liver shots are great..but its easier to land a quick front snap kick to the balls..& if you end up on the ground (on the bottom) lock him up and keep him in full guard..DO NOT let him lean up so he can start throwing bombs. Easier said than done..ask around & join a legit “mma” type dojo..stay away from things like Taekwondo...it’s no good for street fighting or even full contact tourny’s..it’s good for flexability/point sparring...very over rated
