For those who aren't aware, the voice of Steve Burnside is Sam Riegel, who is known for Donatello from the TMNT cartoon from the 2000s, Flynn from Tales of Vesperia, Jude Mathis from Tales of Xillia, Furio Tigre from the Ace Attorney anime, Phoenix Wright himself in Duel Destinies, Teddie from the Persona series, and even the Twitch-streamed D&D show, Critical Role, among MANY others. Oh, how far that man has come...

He only voiced Steve in Darkside Chronicles, the OG actor was dubbed in Canada along with the others.

Dude, I know its Veronica I've been playing this game since the Dreamcast version which I still have and is also my favorite because in that game Wesker not only he gets his ass wooped but he gets scared of Alexia Ashford.

RE Code Veronica according to Shinji Mikami is "The Real Resident Evil 3" but since Capcom have a exclusive contract with Sony where the Resident Evil main series only available on Sony console, the spinoff "Biohazard : Last Escape" become Resident Evil 3 : Nemesis"

The dreamcast wasn't on its way out at all with this game. This game was released in early 2000 right after the most succesful western console launch of all time; the dreamcast

The HD remaster is really dark for some reason, if you can, play the Dreamcast or PS2 version
I believe the reason is so dark is because he recorded in Limited RGB range instead of Full Range (HDMI capture cards are finicky in that regard).
@@TheIndigoBros92 No, it's just really muted. It's awful. All the atmosphere from the Dreamcast release is gone.
PS2 on component cable works fine for HD TVs
You should also play that version to watch Wesker get bopped by Alexia, which is infinitely better than the matrix bullshit he pulls in X.

A tip for dual wielding, if your character aims at two enemies and you want to switch to a single target, press the change target button (L1) and they will point both weapons at the closest one

Interesting thing about Steve. In the dreamcast version he had a Leonardo Dicaprio haircut, but in CVX they changed it.
I am suprized you didn't mention the soundtrack to the game, it is one of, if not the best resident evil soundtrack.
I think this is one of the best reviews you've written to date. Really comprehensive and detailed when talking about the gameplay, which most game critics now seem to gloss over too quickly.

Man, imagine a Code Veronica remake that brought it up to par with the original trilogy's remakes.
The thing that makes this most enticing for me is the idea of D.C. Douglas hamming it up in the debut of Matrix-era Wesker.
Watching this video two years later, you did not bungle that outro, you accurately demonstrated the feelings of the time… we all could not find our words and I hope you’re well.

1, 3 and 4 are good games.
Code Veronica's interesting because its a bit of the odd game out for the series and doesn't exactly fit into either the classic Raccoon City survival horror era (0-3, REmake) nor the more action orient direction the series took after this (4-6). The different locations, distinct playable character ratio (half Claire, half Chris), and other aesthetic choices more or less place it in its own category of being a tank control Resident Evil game that lacks the similar terror elements of the titles that proceeded it.

Now this is a Resident evil game I don't often see people talk about.
Here’s what I heard.
Apparently, during development, Steve was meant to be Leon, but Capcom changed their mind when they realised that they would be killing off a fan favourite. Granted, it’s just a rumour, but it WOULD explain why Steve looked a lot like Leon in the initial release.
While I've heard about this rumor, there's one massive counterpoint: Resident Evil Gaiden.
It's a (once canon) spin off for the Gameboy, and...they kill Leon off in that game. It shares the writer from Code Veronica too.
They realized it was a bad idea and retconned the game but the fact Capcom allowed them to kill off Leon takes away some creedence to that rumor(which is often driven by shippers, so it loses even more by that alone)
Actually, for Gaiden, it’s not the fact that they had killed off Leon. In fact, they implied that HE was the Parasite B.O.W. they wrote it out of canon because it was meant to foreshadow a plot for Resident Evil 4 which never ended up getting used, so they wound up declaring the game non-canon.
Why is it when I hear a video game personality say "COVID-19" it sounds like a game or a power up from a game that I just haven't heard of?

This have would benefit SO MUCH from a makeover! It's over of my favorite childhood games despite how exhausting it could be at points, with a few tweaks white keeping the music and atmosphere it could really make this ugly duckling shine
This "HD" release is so god damn dark somehow textures look blurrier. Best way to play Code Veronica right now is emulating the GC port IMO, crisp 1080p (or higher) without the brightness set to -9.
When Code Veronica first released back in 2000 (20 years ago!), it received nothing but praise, but I'm noticing that it's gotten more criticism over the years when compared to other Resident Evil titles. I don't really understand this as I have always been a really big fan of this entry. At any rate, I think we can all agree that a Code Veronica remake would be interesting.
Because it doesn’t aged well as time passed unlike RE3 which aged better cause the issue like Johnny mentioned (backtracking, level design etc.)
Let's hope to God that they completely erase Steve in the remake.

Backtracking DOES add up in any game, and the fact so much of it is mandatory doesn't do Code Veronica any favors. It's Devil May Cry 4 before that ws a thing, repetition is unavoidable in game design but making it more evident will hurt the game.
@@scissorman44 Backtracking has been a major part of every classic Resident Evil game. I fail to see how the backtracking in Code Veronica is so much worse than past entries. It doesn't help that none of the people I've come across who complain about the backtracking in this game ever bother to explain what makes it so egregious. Honestly, the majority of the criticisms I've heard people make of Code Veronica can easily be applied to other Resident Evil games as well.
I remember borrowing my friends Dreamcast just to play Code Veronica. The PS2 has only just come out.

Honestly the Resident Evil games had been putting more emphasis on action since RE2. RE2 had way more ammo and then RE3 brought in the dodge mechanic.

Code veronica is one of my favourite resi games! I admit the backtracking can be a bit much though and the lack of difficulty options makes it tough imo.
I would love to see them go darker with this game in a remake. Less cheese, more horror. Like they've done with 1-3.

When I saw that cinematic intro for the first time at my local video game store when the game just came out on DC I was mind blown!
The soundtrack for this game fucking rules. Say what you will about the story and its gameplay, but the soundtrack is one of the best in the series imo. Code Veronica has my favorite save room theme.

That's funny, I just beat Resident Evil 1 for the first time today and while I was watching his review for that game, this was suddenly uploaded!

Does anyone find it ironic how Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was supposed to be a side story and Code: Veronica the mainline entry everyone was excited for, only for 3 to end up having a lot more innovative features than Code: Veronica? Seriously let's list them off:
1) The gun powder mechanic which further emphasized the need to manage your resources for enemy encounters.
2) Better level design as, with some exceptions here and there, most puzzle solutions and backtracking is regulated to the current area (Uptown, Downtown, Clock Tower, Dead Factory, etc.) in order to keep things going.
3) Live selection which added replayability in allowing different routes and endings to be obtained depending on player choice.
4) The constant threat of Nemesis which added tension as you never knew when he would ambush you and you would be rewarded for taking him down which added challenge to those looking for it.
5) Better control with being able to freely move on stairs made the tank controls feel slightly better.
6) Better writing. While the writing in Resident Evil games (or Capcom games in general) was never that great, it was never jarringly stupid like in Code: Veronica. At least 4 was self-aware in its stupidity.
And finally the most shocking of all
7) Better voice-acting. Seriously the voice-acting in 3 is actually quite good all things considered. So how the hell did they go back a step all the way back to Resident Evil 1 quality acting for Code: Veronica?

I read somewhere that Steve originally were ment to be Leon, but that people didn't like that he would die like that so he was rewrked into a new character, so maybe that's why Steve seems so underdeveloped?
Claire had been watching *Arnold Schwarzenegger films, not John Woo. The creators of the game straight up admitted to paying homage to the Terminator movies with the opening cinematic of the helicopter chase scene.
Ah yes, I love seeing a Dark Screen with some lightly illuminated model 90% of the game. Goddamn.
Rumor has it that Leon was at one point going to be Claire's partner in this game and also die near the end. Capcom quickly realized how bad an idea it would be to kill off such a well-liked character and turned him into the new character named Steve Burnside instead (if true, this would explain why Steve looked so similar to Leon in the original release).
This was my first RE game! Got it on PS2.
17:51 so... what it looks like is happening there, is that the bowgun's projectile has travel time instead of being hitscan. Your auto-aim is aiming at where the Zombie's chest *is*, but the zombie's swaying so much that by the time the projectile gets there, it's where the zombie's chest *was*.
Probably my least favorite in the series along with 0. Honestly would rather play 6.
A game with great potential but the non selection of difficulty just ruined it!
The two Ashford brothers had a psychic connection and the brother disguised himself as his sister whenever she possessed him.
The same way, whatever you did with Claire would influence Chris' playthrough (in example, you could've saved the guard that released Claire and, in exchange, make Chris' playthrough easier) and the notes show how much did Steve's father cared for his son (or are those on the 1st person shooter game?)
Since Johnny is doing Capcom's main zombie series, I kinda wanna see him review the Dead Rising series aswell.
That Cave Johnson picture on the top right of the screen makes me wonder if he was a major stock holder for Umbrella. It'd certainly explain all the bumbling choices Umbrella made like slapping a fedora on an 8 foot killer monster or building science facilities with bottomless pits and no ramps.
