Fun fact: A lot of this game’s music is from the Kirby anime, including Checker Knights. This also means there was anime music in Smash Bros. Brawl, since Checker Knights was in that game.
UGH! Seeing Dyna Blade reminds me that in said anime some of the characters were CG. For some like Kirby himself & Dedede it's fine but Dyna Blade stuck out like a sore thumb to me.
@@GatorRay Sometimes the same character would be CG and other times they wouldn't be. What was up with that?

“Just driving over them is simply not enough.” Johnny that would have made the game even simpler than it already is 😂
Pingas Studios funny thing is the wheel vehicles will activate the boost pads just by driving over them
I mean, that means it's simpler AND an input less to press, so I'm all up for just passing through them to be enough

NATHANIEL omg I can't believe it
Hello Nathaniel bandy
What the fuck?
Given how many similarities this game has to Melee, I’m convinced that this entire game is an extended apology letter from Sakurai for making Kirby bottom tier in Melee.
What would be a better apology is *NOT* making kirby bottom tier, making him high if not top tier, oh and idk *MAKING HIS ENTIRE MOVESET NOT BORING!?*
No😑
fodv93
Sonic is another one that deserves better Treatment. Being in 3 Smash Games you would expect him to get an overhaul since he was added into Brawl late. Sonic feels like the least developed 3rd Party. Boring barebones moveset, with different shades of blue for Alts and only 3 new tracks in brawl, no remixes and still no 2nd playable Rep.
@@brandonwilliams6119 besides kirby, sonic is another character that deserves a moveset remodeling
He made up for it in Brawl... and then promptly forgot all about in the next two games.
“Why did they decide to build this city so close to a volcano?”
Mexico City and Tokyo: Hey! Don’t judge
Pompeii would like to know your location
I do think, if you ever played the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, chances are it's like riding around in a theme park with different sections of the park allowing you to explore and such. So the volcano doesn't have lava beneath it it's just at the top. But even then that's a launch point to what we would call "Saturday Night Live" or the floating Castle In The Sky type of place.
City Trial I feel is more of "What if we've combined Twister Metal, Crash Bash, RC Revenge, Destruction Derby, and every single game prior to it with the different modes, and combined them into one game."
But to be honest, I love all of the modes but people love City Trial the most (while I personally love Air Ride the most but that's just my preference. Nebula Belt and Beanstalk Park are absolutely gorgeous racing courses akin to F-Zero GX/F-Zero series).
johnny is finally sponsored by coffee he's been waiting for this for years.

It's a SIN that Johnny hasn't looked at any Donkey Kong games on this channel yet. C'mon John, you're killing me here.
He totally needs to do dk after he did Mario and kirby.
Dk is Nintendo's hard series and he's grown up with the first one so it's a matter of time.
He should also do Pac Man
Oh hey, I didn’t know Square man watched Johnny
Donkey kong jungle beat is underrated to me .
Pour one out for the DK Crew
The beauty of City Trial is it's unpredictability. I was so addicted to this one mode because I was so hooked on what things I could collect, what vehicles to use, and what events will happen all under 1 large map. Not to mention how quick it is to start another round after finishing a City Trial game. This sort of addiction I can understand why people constantly play Battle Royale games even when there is just one huge area to explore.
"Or you can suddenly find yourself-
*SHIIIIIIIIIIIIII-"*
Golden.
I swear every time Johnny uploads a review on one of my favorite games I always get the same icky feeling that he's gonna hate it... And then I remember this is Johnny and while he is brutally honest he is also fair with his reviews and makes it very easy to understand the pros and cons of a game unlike back then, as a kid, where it was so easy to enjoy everything to the fullest without taking much note of the flaws!
It also makes me want a sequel that will probably never happen... Fuck.
And now that John’s played Air Ride online with an emulator, we can expect Air Ride to be announced for the Switch tomorrow with online play. xD
I would be so happy bout that
It would be give me a reason to buy the switch to be sure if it did get a port with online play. Air Ride is a horridly underated game when it is so good.
Nora Simonson it’s bad lol
Tomorrow for sure
It's only a matter of time

Kirby's air ride needs a remake.
New levels
More characters
Just do it Nintendo please..
Johnny has made me notice how people say Kirby's Air Ride now
Star Allies is already comparable to CTR:NF with how it brings a whole lot of fanservice to the table, imagine that but with Air Ride, at least that's how i feel it could be in terms of character selection
Go ask HAL, not Nintendo.
good luck prying sakurai away from smash.
Kirby Air Ride but City Trial is a battle royale with 100 players
Kirby Air Ride is a perfect example of "game of its time." Anyone who played it when it first came out will like it, but not so much anyone playing it for the 1st time in 2020.
i dont entirely agree with you there. I think he summed it up in the video pretty well: if you have some friends nearby to play it is an amazing party game, but should someone go into it exclusively for single player content, they will be bored after about an hour or so and miss why it was such a fun game. If you have not played it, city trial has even more depth than he gave it credit for with settings that can be adjusted such as match time, with the ability to add an extra 2 minutes (to total 7) or guarantee a mid-match vague hint about the end event (which can also easily be overlooked with how chaotic the game can get). If you really want to pull out the unpredictability, you can even force certain events for the sake of achievement hunting as long as you have encountered it at least once before. (beating king dedede seems impossible without 4 human players collaborating, as one example)
It is not without its flaws, but in reality, all those flaws would be easy to fix in a sequel or remake with just the addition of online functionality.
I played it at launch. I never liked it. I don't even remember it getting positive critical reception. I think it's a game that mostly survives due to childhood nostalgia
Honestly I grew up with Air Ride. Even then I didn't think it was that great I only liked City Trial.
@@TheLonelyGoomba Me and by friends still play City Trial to this day. Has nothing to do with nostalgia, City Trial is just that fun even with the limited amount of content. It has a bit of a steep learning curve due to how different it is (I've tried to get new friends into a few times but they're usually pretty confused the whole time) but once you figure it all out it's amazing just how much depth you'll find in City Trial. I still occasionally discover new strategic options to this day.
That said, Air Ride mode isn't worth playing (If you just want to race there's a lot of better options out there) and Top Ride is only fun in short bursts. Single player also isn't that great. City Trial with friends is what makes the game worth playing and if you haven't experienced that then I can understand why you wouldn't remember liking the game.
I didn't play it at launch but a little later when I was a kid and
Jeez, this game sucked still even back then. There was literally no reason not to buy Double Dash or F-Zero GX on its time, cause they're so much more packed than this game.
N64 and PSX era games had more content than this game.
People just gossip over it because of blind nostalgia
Hey Johnny has a killer queen background on his desktop.
So he does...
I wonder what his stand would be.
FourSwordsLord Stand Master: Johnny Ortiz

Good tastes, now we just need to get him into Hunter X Hunter. I know his uncle Greg saw a bit and got interested in what he saw.
Well he is watching part 4 now
Johnny, despite my immense nostalgia for Air Ride, I agree with a majority of your criticisms regarding it. The barebones controls, and content hold it back a lot. And I IMMENSELY agree with giving another go at this game, ESPECIALLY for the gameplay mechanic of flying/gliding alongside ground racing. Seriously, sequel...spiritual or not, this has IMMENSE POTENTIAL.
"better with friends" is the saving grace of many a bad game.
Pretty much. Fallout 76, anthem etc are better with friends and while true, doesn't change the fact they are pure trash.
@@jacks.cosplay Kirby Air Ride isn't really comparable to those though. Those were downright bad mechanically in many areas on top of being buggy.
Kirby Air Ride is a little lacking on content by yourself, but it's still not close to being a bad game.
Couldn't agree more, pretty much any game is fun in some fashion in multiplayer
If you need other people to enjoy a game, I count it as a bad game then. As an adult it's nearly impossible to play multiplayer split screen because fuck online and their fees. So solo fun time for me plisum.
17:24 - So... Does this mean that now Johnny has its own version of the Disney Vault? It goes into the vault and only comes out in a few years?

Best is to use Dolphin emulator. You guys should join Kirby Workshop Discord and participate in the spicy City Trial netplay sessions!
As numerous people are gonna point out in the comment section: the orchestrated music that's there more than likely comes from the anime Kirby Right Back At Ya, or as it's called in Japan Hoshi no Kaabi (Kirby of the Star), and specifically the Japanese version of said anime. I'm not sure why but I think it was to cross-promote the game and the finale of the anime since it was coming to the end in Japan at the time, evident in that there was an episode where Kirby uses the Air Ride machines to fight off some killer UFOs. The song Checker Knights was in Brawl, but only in Brawl, likely because of licensing issues regarding the origins of the song.
That explains why Frozen Hillside is the only Air Ride song to be in later games.
@@TackyRackyComixNEO The original Celestial Valley music is also in Smash 4 and Ultimate.
This the kirby game that really needs a remake, port or whatever it's the one best of the best kirby spinoffs ever

Well... The introduction of mentioning a full 3D Kirby game aged pretty well after Kirby and the Forgotten Land was announced.
I will preach it for flipping ever: Kirby Air Ride is the best racing game on the Gamecube, easily my favorite racer of all time and is in desperate need of a remake and/ or sequel (preferably sequel)
I think it’s definitely a fun game, but a lacking in content and can be a bit awkward at times. I would say it’s in my personal top 3 behind Sonic Riders and Double Dash.

I actually remember this game very fondly. It was my first ever Kirby game. I played the City Trial very frequently, especially in free roam to test out the hidden vehicles and secrets.
So Johnny finally got a coffee sponsor... so proud of him. *sheds tear*
So many good late night memories in City Trial :D this Kirby marathon was a lot of fun, thanks Johnny. can't wait for the RE4 review!
Love City Trial. I too look forward to the RE4 review.
Johnny has achieved his dream. To be sponsored by a coffee seller
What I loved most about KAR is the Free Run option in City Trial. You get to explore the entire CT environment with a 3D Kirby, the only time ever you get to do that. I loved walked around with him and trying out all the different vehicles, exploring all the different tunnels and secret passages and flying around everywhere, it felt like such a fun sandbox for your imagination to run wild.
Man i remember love going to my friend's house to play this, Double Dash and Melee, good times
My brother and I would put City Trial on no time limit and we would spend literally hours every day racing to find the Dragoon Pieces, blowing each other up with bombs, and just having an all-out blast!

@@marx4538 I mean... not really? When it comes to the main games after 2010 the only one that is arguably subpar is Star Allies, and thats mostly just cuz its a really shallow experience in single player

I remember playing this game as a kid, ironically it's what initially made me discover Kirby!
I loved the checklist in Kirby Air ride. It was satisfying to me to unlock something, then get a bunch of new objectives to try out, and I wish more games had something like that. Smash Ultimate just lets you know what every unlock condition is, and all you get are spirits, and I think Brawl had something similar but it was not nearly as big, nor was it tied to any interesting unlocks. I wish more games had this method of "just doing something" might unlock an unknown spot on the checklist, then you get a bunch of new objectives to try to see if they give you a new car, or colour, or piece of dragoon, or something.

How you like the perfect blue anime?
Sucking up enemies only requires tapping the A button once, and you don't lose much speed if all you're doing is giving it a quick tap. It's more drastic on the Swerve Star vehicle, but that's because its whole gimmick is that it stops and turns on a dime. The braking and boosting mechanic is much smoother once you understand how to use it. It's best used for drifting around corners, but it's also useful for just braking to avoid crashing into walls.

This was a fulfilling game to complete 100%. The controls may be simple, but that’s much to be appreciated. The time attack trials for Air Ride mode require mastery and memory of the tracks for fastest route and enemy layouts for maximum speed boosts.
Always hated coffee myself, even the smell of the stuff makes me feel ill.
But cannot think of a more apt sponsor!
I wish I liked coffee ☕, but I have a strong sweet tooth and it is too bitter for me.
Coffee is like my fuel. I need a daily refill, and there's a more economic, but less effective version in the form of tea.
@Tom The Fish my guy, based on your reply tendencies here, you're more bitter and acidic than the lowest quality coffee, might wanna chill and stop being so needlessly mean to people, jeez.
Ikr? Believe me, I’ve tried to like coffee but I just can’t do it.
More appropriate than Raid: Shadow legends (Do the people who Sponsor it even like it at all, or are they being held at gunpoint to say positive things about it?)
My brother and I used to play City Trial with his friend all the time. Sometimes after we did a game of the normal mode, we’d go into Free Run mode, jump off our vehicles and play tag with our Kirbies. (There was also another variant where one player got the Hydra and had to ram into the others who were on foot- we called it “Kirby Smash”)
5:56 the cutest distraction ever! I almost forgot why I came here XD
I feel like no one in their right mind never understood how fucking terrifying the Hydra was.
Yea Dragoon was a fucking airplane but the second you got the Hydra, the power went straight to your fucking mind and anyone that knew what it could do had given up hope. You was like the juggernaut with the speed of Sonic.

*"The Turbo Star And Slick Star, What The F*ck! Ones Like Riding A Stick Of Butter In A Frying Pan, The Other Just Has Sh*t Turning In General."*
That's so true lol! 😂😂😂
They should make a "Kirby air ride 2"
"Kirby City Trial"
Just a whole game built around expanding on the City Trial mode since it was the best part.
It’s somewhat known now, but for those unaware, Kirby Air Ride runs on a modified version of Melee’s engine, just as a racing game instead of a 3D platform fighter. That’s why the menus and some sound effects are so similar. Heck, the game runs extremely fast and free like Melee.
I appreciate the idea of making an entry-level racing game, but you know what other game did just that without mapping everything on one-button? Mario Kart. I think that's the big issue here, Air Ride goes so far to keep things simple and easy to pickup that it forgets that kids can learn more complex mechanics just fine if the game properly teaches them.
Anyhoo, whenever you get to reviewing Planet Robobot, you may want to look up footage of the True Arena, just in case the sheer length of the final boss fight, combined with everything else you have to face first, ends up giving you shit.
Thank you! So many people overpraise Air Ride for being a "entry-level" racing game when Mario Kart is perfectly simple and easy to grasp, whereas Air Ride just forces every single hard to utilize function onto the same button while barely giving you time to grasp it all at the same time.
I have no idea why Johnny advertising coffee feels so comfy to listen to but goodness I felt so at ease. And yeah Kirby Air Ride is an “I grew up with it” game but I will absolutely agree that it wasn’t very fun in single player. In fact, all my childhood memories of it are of my cousins playing City Trial with me for hours on end. Like seriously, City Trial was the ONLY thing we did. Sooooo yeah Air Ride is one of those “I only enjoy a third of the game” ones, unfortunately.
Fun Fact: The Menu looks identical to Smash Melee.
A common misconception about the A button is how it works. When you press it, you actually ground your Star which causes you to slow down and hit boost buttons below it. If you are using a wheelie, though, you're already touching the ground so you activate boost buttons by just driving over them.
With how much John likes coffee, I wonder if he'd like Sojiro from Persona 5.

I would love to see the City Trial mode expanded upon. My brother and I spent hours and hours just exploring the city, playing the actual mode and sometimes just in free mode. To this day we still dust it off now and then and love collecting stat ups and competing with each other and the CPUs. It just sucks that the actual City part only leads up to one single game, which depending on what you get is so short that it sometimes feels not worth. It would be nice if it were a few games at the end, so all that time in the city feels worth it and also giving different specs a chance to shine in one sitting.
When you using hours and hours to play nitendo games dont you think u didnt do anything just your day going times flying thats not good cause this year i need and old channel from youtube if you have it pls say to me okay? I need your answer so...

You know the internet Johnny: It’s okay to have your own opinion… as long as it’s the same as mine! People never seem to quite grasp that when a reviewer, a different individual from themselves with their own tastes and thoughts, reviews a game they love that there’s the possibility that the reviewer might not like it. It’s an alien concept to them 😜

Something i really wish the stadium events did: just have a full 3+ lap race on an Air Ride map with your nutty stats.
I'd also like if City Trial just told you up-front what the event was so you could plan around it, instead of a 50/50 hint sometimes midway through.
But yeah overall i'd just love another one of these, or an indie knock-off version that expands on it's ideas, something like that.
also Dolphin has a netplay function without Parsec, and it's pretty good.
Skip to 1:42 for the review proper, you’re welcome
I think this game was intended more of a party game rather than a racing game. Actually I see it as a combat game, lol. I like it a lot.
Playing this game solo sucks comparing to the multiplayer. Yeah I agree with that, at least, after you've played 100's of hours, then it's all about the competition / player interaction in City Trial, since it has a LOT of depth. That's when things get amazing.
For players looking to play this online, you should Google 'Kirby Workshop Discord' and join this Netplay community in which you can do MATCHMAKING on City Trial, 4 player matches etc
For such a simplistic and almost barebones racer there’s just something about Kirby Air Ride that really draws me in. I have always wished for some kind of sequel or remake because I really do think there’s a lot of untapped potential in this kirby formula.
I'd be lying if I said my fondness for AirRide wasn't due to the excessive amount of playtime me and my brother sunk into City Trail.
Even nowadays.
SomecallmeJohnny talking about coffee is probably one of the hottest things I've heard in my life, I don't even drink coffee and I'm like "...go on". Seriously this video could have just been about his coffee preferences and I'd still watch it.
Air Ride is the literally the only game that hasn’t been re-released and there’s only a few ways to play it with a GameCube, White Wii or Emulators. Air Ride is a great spin-off with a great ost too. We could really use a sequel or re-release.
Never have I ever felt such a strong combination of emotions as bursting into laughter and being struck with love at 5:55. That scene with the cat playing with the cord is so heartwarming it's indescribable.
Can't wait to see all the fancy new things you're going to do with your videos either Johnny, looking forward to those new thumbnails and stuff! :)
On the Gamecube thing. The Wii can read Gamecube discs. There are lids on the top for memory cards and controllers.
I have very fond memories of playing the City Trial mode with friends, like most people who have played this game. It's such a unique concept for a game and after you spend some time with the normal race mode, you can get really good at it. This is a really enjoyable game if you've sunk some time into it and if a remake or sequel was made today with a lot more content, a few new modes and characters and more unique features and, of course, content for the City Trial mode, this game could be a really popular online multiplayer experience for the Switch. Given it's generally a cult classic rather than a true fan favorite, I doubt Nintendo or HAL would ever want do this concept again, but maybe another studio can take the idea and build on it with another property. Let's see.
Elementary school's after school "club". Every time people got a chance to use the gamecube, it was either Kirby's Air Ride, Sonic Adventure 2, Luigi's Mansion, or Melee
Every one of those games gave me a fond childhood when I personally didn't have a gamecube
