I do think, if you ever played the Roller Coaster Tycoon series, chances are it's like riding around in a theme park with different sections of the park allowing you to explore and such. So the volcano doesn't have lava beneath it it's just at the top. But even then that's a launch point to what we would call "Saturday Night Live" or the floating Castle In The Sky type of place. City Trial I feel is more of "What if we've combined Twister Metal, Crash Bash, RC Revenge, Destruction Derby, and every single game prior to it with the different modes, and combined them into one game." But to be honest, I love all of the modes but people love City Trial the most (while I personally love Air Ride the most but that's just my preference. Nebula Belt and Beanstalk Park are absolutely gorgeous racing courses akin to F-Zero GX/F-Zero series).
Star Allies is already comparable to CTR:NF with how it brings a whole lot of fanservice to the table, imagine that but with Air Ride, at least that's how i feel it could be in terms of character selection
I swear every time Johnny uploads a review on one of my favorite games I always get the same icky feeling that he's gonna hate it... And then I remember this is Johnny and while he is brutally honest he is also fair with his reviews and makes it very easy to understand the pros and cons of a game unlike back then, as a kid, where it was so easy to enjoy everything to the fullest without taking much note of the flaws! It also makes me want a sequel that will probably never happen... Fuck.
The beauty of City Trial is it's unpredictability. I was so addicted to this one mode because I was so hooked on what things I could collect, what vehicles to use, and what events will happen all under 1 large map. Not to mention how quick it is to start another round after finishing a City Trial game. This sort of addiction I can understand why people constantly play Battle Royale games even when there is just one huge area to explore.
It would be give me a reason to buy the switch to be sure if it did get a port with online play. Air Ride is a horridly underated game when it is so good.
Kirby Air Ride is a perfect example of "game of its time." Anyone who played it when it first came out will like it, but not so much anyone playing it for the 1st time in 2020.
i dont entirely agree with you there. I think he summed it up in the video pretty well: if you have some friends nearby to play it is an amazing party game, but should someone go into it exclusively for single player content, they will be bored after about an hour or so and miss why it was such a fun game. If you have not played it, city trial has even more depth than he gave it credit for with settings that can be adjusted such as match time, with the ability to add an extra 2 minutes (to total 7) or guarantee a mid-match vague hint about the end event (which can also easily be overlooked with how chaotic the game can get). If you really want to pull out the unpredictability, you can even force certain events for the sake of achievement hunting as long as you have encountered it at least once before. (beating king dedede seems impossible without 4 human players collaborating, as one example) It is not without its flaws, but in reality, all those flaws would be easy to fix in a sequel or remake with just the addition of online functionality.
I played it at launch. I never liked it. I don't even remember it getting positive critical reception. I think it's a game that mostly survives due to childhood nostalgia
@@TheLonelyGoomba Me and by friends still play City Trial to this day. Has nothing to do with nostalgia, City Trial is just that fun even with the limited amount of content. I still occasionally discover new strategic options to this day. That said, Air Ride mode isn't worth playing (If you just want to race there's a lot of better options out there) and Top Ride is only fun in short bursts. Single player also isn't that great. City Trial with friends is what makes the game worth playing and if you haven't experienced that then I can understand why you wouldn't remember liking the game.

Johnny, despite my immense nostalgia for Air Ride, I agree with a majority of your criticisms regarding it. The barebones controls, and content hold it back a lot. And I IMMENSELY agree with giving another go at this game, ESPECIALLY for the gameplay mechanic of flying/gliding alongside ground racing. I'm not sure why but I think it was to cross-promote the game and the finale of the anime since it was coming to the end in Japan at the time, evident in that there was an episode where Kirby uses the Air Ride machines to fight off some killer UFOs. I actually remember this game very fondly. It was my first ever Kirby game. I played the City Trial very frequently, especially in free roam to test out the hidden vehicles and secrets.
Fun single player thing I used to do: I’d set the laps to 99, turn on health, put all the AI (including myself) on one of each wheelie vehicle and DeDeDe, pick Celestial Valley, and create a survival race and see who lives the longest before they either die to each other or falling off the map
I loved the checklist in Kirby Air ride. It was satisfying to me to unlock something, then get a bunch of new objectives to try out, and I wish more games had something like that. Smash Ultimate just lets you know what every unlock condition is, and all you get are spirits, and I think Brawl had something similar but it was not nearly as big, nor was it tied to any interesting unlocks. I wish more games had this method of "just doing something" might unlock an unknown spot on the checklist, then you get a bunch of new objectives to try to see if they give you a new car, or colour, or piece of dragoon, or something.
Man Sakurai/Nintendo could really polish this game in a remake/sequel to improve the controls, abilities, vehicles, difficulty and add more levels, a story, and online play.
I will preach it for flipping ever: Kirby Air Ride is the best racing game on the Gamecube, easily my favorite racer of all time and is in desperate need of a remake and/ or sequel (preferably sequel)
I think it’s definitely a fun game, but a lacking in content and can be a bit awkward at times. I would say it’s in my personal top 3 behind Sonic Riders and Double Dash.
1:32 Love this suggestion or whatever you want to call it. Feels very inviting. Ready to sit down and listen on your perspective in the game you've played. Please don't ever change the ending of your intro.
I just have to say I’ve waited my whole life for you to review this game. Childhood memories kinda stuff. Thank you Johnny for being the first RUclipsr I subbed to, and for staying true to you. Much love man.
What I loved most about KAR is the Free Run option in City Trial. You get to explore the entire CT environment with a 3D Kirby, the only time ever you get to do that. I loved walked around with him and trying out all the different vehicles, exploring all the different tunnels and secret passages and flying around everywhere, it felt like such a fun sandbox for your imagination to run wild.
@@marx4538 I mean... not really? When it comes to the main games after 2010 the only one that is arguably subpar is Star Allies, and thats mostly just cuz its a really shallow experience in single player
I would love to see the City Trial mode expanded upon. My brother and I spent hours and hours just exploring the city, playing the actual mode and sometimes just in free mode. To this day we still dust it off now and then and love collecting stat ups and competing with each other and the CPUs. It just sucks that the actual City part only leads up to one single game, which depending on what you get is so short that it sometimes feels not worth. It would be nice if it were a few games at the end, so all that time in the city feels worth it and also giving different specs a chance to shine in one sitting.
When you using hours and hours to play nitendo games dont you think u didnt do anything just your day going times flying thats not good cause this year i need and old channel from youtube if you have it pls say to me okay? I need your answer so...

More appropriate than Raid: Shadow legends (Do the people who Sponsor it even like it at all, or are they being held at gunpoint to say positive things about it?)
12:42-13:08 *Hoo hoo hoo BOY!* Is he not lying, people! The Dragoon Star is a straight up instant win button. For those of you new here, you have no idea how satisfying it is to get all the parts for this thing (especially if you managed to get it early and still have 4 minutes of the trial left) and just sweep the rest of the competition like dust in the wind. All accompanied by the awesome theme music that plays when you get it. It, along with the Hydra Star, are straight up this game's answer to *Super Sonic.*
I appreciate the idea of making an entry-level racing game, but you know what other game did just that without mapping everything on one-button? Mario Kart. I think that's the big issue here, Air Ride goes so far to keep things simple and easy to pickup that it forgets that kids can learn more complex mechanics just fine if the game properly teaches them. Anyhoo, whenever you get to reviewing Planet Robobot, you may want to look up footage of the True Arena, just in case the sheer length of the final boss fight, combined with everything else you have to face first, ends up giving you shit.
Thank you! So many people overpraise Air Ride for being a "entry-level" racing game when Mario Kart is perfectly simple and easy to grasp, whereas Air Ride just forces every single hard to utilize function onto the same button while barely giving you time to grasp it all at the same time.
I have very fond memories of playing the City Trial mode with friends, like most people who have played this game. It's such a unique concept for a game and after you spend some time with the normal race mode, you can get really good at it. This is a really enjoyable game if you've sunk some time into it and if a remake or sequel was made today with a lot more content, a few new modes and characters and more unique features and, of course, content for the City Trial mode, this game could be a really popular online multiplayer experience for the Switch. Given it's generally a cult classic rather than a true fan favorite, I doubt Nintendo or HAL would ever want do this concept again, but maybe another studio can take the idea and build on it with another property. Let's see.
Whenever you decide to return to the Kirby series, I sincerely hope you'll give Kirby's Dream Course a go, that game is hilarious and fun, and it destroys friendships like only the best multiplayer games can do
He still uploads omg! I’m so happy haha, I used to watch you with my brothers all the time, and you have pretty good views. Glad to see you’re doing great Johnny!
Air Ride is the literally the only game that hasn’t been re-released and there’s only a few ways to play it with a GameCube, White Wii or Emulators. Air Ride is a great spin-off with a great ost too. We could really use a sequel or re-release.
You know the internet Johnny: It’s okay to have your own opinion… as long as it’s the same as mine! People never seem to quite grasp that when a reviewer, a different individual from themselves with their own tastes and thoughts, reviews a game they love that there’s the possibility that the reviewer might not like it. It’s an alien concept to them 😜
Something i really wish the stadium events did: just have a full 3+ lap race on an Air Ride map with your nutty stats. I'd also like if City Trial just told you up-front what the event was so you could plan around it, instead of a 50/50 hint sometimes midway through. But yeah overall i'd just love another one of these, or an indie knock-off version that expands on it's ideas, something like that. also Dolphin has a netplay function without Parsec, and it's pretty good.
I remember my time with this game. God, I spent so many hundreds of hours on this game, trying my hardest to get every last piece on those blasted check boxes filled, goofing about in the city trials map both to look for secrets and messing with my friends, it was a blast. I remember the first time that the rare spaceship first showed up in in the city, I flipped the heck out, and unlocking the Dragoon and Hydra was such a worthwhile chore. They became my favorite rides just to rush around the city with and the cinematic when you find all of the pieces never failed to put the dumbest grin on my face. I adored this game for the longest time, and while I'm a bit sad to here that you didn't, I can't fault you for your opinion either. It can be a bit bare boned, and some of the rides gimmicks can be cumbersome. At the end of the day though, I'm glad you covered this game.

5:56 the cutest distraction ever! I almost forgot why I came here XD
Man this game is so much fun city trial plus the glide mini game with odd carts was so much fun
Johnny has achieved his dream. To be sponsored by a coffee seller
Fun single player thing I used to do: I’d set the laps to 99, turn on health, put all the AI (including myself) on one of each wheelie vehicle and DeDeDe, pick Celestial Valley, and create a survival race and see who lives the longest before they either die to each other or falling off the map
Wheelie Scooter is the best wheelie don’t @ me
Skip to 1:42 for the review proper, you’re welcome
1:07 I like how you can see him mouthing "That's Very Good'
So many good late night memories in City Trial :D this Kirby marathon was a lot of fun, thanks Johnny. can't wait for the RE4 review!
Love City Trial. I too look forward to the RE4 review.
I remember playing this game as a kid, ironically it's what initially made me discover Kirby!
RIP Johnny’s Gamecube 2003-2020

Damn, never been this early before.
Luigiprincessdress Dude No, you weren’t.
@@sergiocatholicking1609 congrats dude
How you like the perfect blue anime?
Man Sakurai/Nintendo could really polish this game in a remake/sequel to improve the controls, abilities, vehicles, difficulty and add more levels, a story, and online play.
I will preach it for flipping ever: Kirby Air Ride is the best racing game on the Gamecube, easily my favorite racer of all time and is in desperate need of a remake and/ or sequel (preferably sequel)
I think it’s definitely a fun game, but a lacking in content and can be a bit awkward at times. I would say it’s in my personal top 3 behind Sonic Riders and Double Dash.
CometX-ing F-Zero GX?
NathanGuiaYT didn’t play that.
I mean F-Zero GX is tough competition, i personally like that more.
But yeah Air Ride is wonderful and def one of the most memorable GC game.
Basic bitch who only played Double Dash would be me...
You heard of Kirby’s Air Ride. Now get ready for Kirb’s Quarantine experience!
0:08 That Dwight Schrute pillow tho.
1:32 Love this suggestion or whatever you want to call it. Feels very inviting. Ready to sit down and listen on your perspective in the game you've played.
Please don't ever change the ending of your intro.
11:42 Oops. He called it “Smash Run” when he was suppose to call it “City Trial”.
GamerGuy25 / Devlin Ford
Reminds me of when he called the enigma the eclipse cannon in the x legacy collection
Kirby Air ride was my introduction to Kirby for me.
Glad to see you and I see eye to eye on coffe, Johnny. I'm more of an espresso guy. Caramel Macchiato being my favorite.
I just have to say I’ve waited my whole life for you to review this game. Childhood memories kinda stuff. Thank you Johnny for being the first RUclipsr I subbed to, and for staying true to you. Much love man.
They should make a "Kirby air ride 2"
"Kirby City Trial"
Just a whole game built around expanding on the City Trial mode since it was the best part.
What I loved most about KAR is the Free Run option in City Trial. You get to explore the entire CT environment with a 3D Kirby, the only time ever you get to do that. I loved walked around with him and trying out all the different vehicles, exploring all the different tunnels and secret passages and flying around everywhere, it felt like such a fun sandbox for your imagination to run wild.
am kinda bummed that Johnny just so happens to cut the marathon JUST before shit gets real good with RtDL
to be honest it gets even worse then it was
@@marx4538 I mean... not really? When it comes to the main games after 2010 the only one that is arguably subpar is Star Allies, and thats mostly just cuz its a really shallow experience in single player
The Resident Evil stuff is more interesting anyway.
@@jakegarman4526 Opinions bro. I love both Kirby and RE, but I'm disappointed that he isn't going to play the modern titles for a while now.
@@hypno3057 I can respect that.
I didn’t expect Johnny to review my most played childhood game. Thank you for this man, it means a lot to me to see this game again after so long.
"Slice and dice" TMNT 2003 games marathon time PLS
For real! Also, who's your favorite ninja turtle? Mine is Donatello.

What about dmc
Fun fact: You can actually play this game with one hand. Since A, L, and R all do the same thing.
God this game was my entire childhood, feels good to see it again
very fun game, I would love a port on the switch or a remake for that matter
I'm still waiting for the Sonic Adventure games to make their way to Switch, but I wouldn't mind Kirby Air Ride on Switch.
If you think US copies are expensive, PAL copies are near enough £100+ at this point.
Always hated coffee myself, even the smell of the stuff makes me feel ill.
But cannot think of a more apt sponsor!
I wish I liked coffee ☕, but I have a strong sweet tooth and it is too bitter for me.
Coffee is like my fuel. I need a daily refill, and there's a more economic, but less effective version in the form of tea.
@Tom The Fish my guy, based on your reply tendencies here, you're more bitter and acidic than the lowest quality coffee, might wanna chill and stop being so needlessly mean to people, jeez.
Ikr? Believe me, I’ve tried to like coffee but I just can’t do it.
More appropriate than Raid: Shadow legends (Do the people who Sponsor it even like it at all, or are they being held at gunpoint to say positive things about it?)
Me: Johnny hows quarantine going for you?

_"Destruction Kirby"_
That was a big missed opportunity to use that name.
You can say the same of so many of this game's aspects, lol
Let's see.
Not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind more racers having automatic acceleration. I was never a big fan of having to hold down a button for so long.
0:00 You know how much Johnny loves his coffee when he makes a sponsor of one.
Whenever you decide to return to the Kirby series, I sincerely hope you'll give Kirby's Dream Course a go, that game is hilarious and fun, and it destroys friendships like only the best multiplayer games can do
14:27 Still a better love story than Twilight.
14:13 iS tHaT a JoJo ReFrEnCe?!
13:25 jumpscare warning
With how much John likes coffee, I wonder if he'd like Sojiro from Persona 5.
14:13
Nice Killer Queen background! Also, the sponsorship could've not been more perfect for this channel.
"Come on Johnny, give us Resident Evil 4!"
He's teasing us
"How about this instead"
He still uploads omg! I’m so happy haha, I used to watch you with my brothers all the time, and you have pretty good views. Glad to see you’re doing great Johnny!
Fun Fact: The Menu looks identical to Smash Melee.
Air Ride is the literally the only game that hasn’t been re-released and there’s only a few ways to play it with a GameCube, White Wii or Emulators. Air Ride is a great spin-off with a great ost too. We could really use a sequel or re-release.
0:08 to the left what am I even looking at?
@@Chad_Eldridge must have missed the politician who got plastic surgery to be able to pull of nicholas cage faces was badly botched.
I honestly agree i went back and played this game with friends and it wasn’t hitting like it did
You know the internet Johnny: It’s okay to have your own opinion… as long as it’s the same as mine!
Put City Trial on the Switch e-shop with online play and charge $20. If remastered and expanded, charge $30. Boom. Easy profit for Nintendo.
0:08 I am absolutely jealous of that collection.
13:25 JOHNNY I LOVE YOU FOR BRINGING THAT JOKE BACK XD
