The only "lacking" thing in forgotten land is bossesand abilities imo. It's not even a flaw since I don't feel bored of any ability or boss it's super well balanced, it's just that we come from a game with a thousand lol
12:11 That's kind of underselling these levels if I'm honest, especially since this game's appeal is also going on much more experimental level tropes compared to the very vanilla ones Star Allies had, which was a letdown when that game came out Also I know the script was probably very quick paced as a way of relaxation between a stressful month, but it's HAL Labs the ones that develop and conceptualize Kirby, not Nintendo, since that's kind of like brushing something like... Fire Emblem or Pokémon as just Nintendo instead of Intelligent Systems or Game Freak Mainly bringing this up since it's on HAL's team the ones that kept Kirby as 2D for most of his career, not really Nintendo the one that was taking them long to make the jump
HAL Labs really made something special for Kirby’s first 3D adventure, and I personally think it stands out as more than just standard Kirby, it’s a step forward, and I can’t wait for future titles to refine this even more
8:35 Oddly enough ice was one of the abilities I used the most often because it has an actual shield guard and its freezing effect completely destroys bosses. It probably felt slower because they actually removed the spinning aerial move it used to have and I do really hate that. Drill actually also does massive damage to bosses if you just circle around them continuously with the -paraloop- quake move
Multiple reviewers yourself included mentioned Nintendo multiple times but Nintendo is NOT Kirby developer but simply a publisher. HAL Labs are the devs of Kirby and they never felt comfortable releasing a 3D Kirby game until now. They simply had a limited budget so for many years they made most of their games on portable devices which 2D games made more sense.
For most to say it's "just" standard Kirby in 3D, I think it's a marvelous accomplishment by HAL since they made the jump to 3D as minimal a barrier as possible; THEY took the pains to bend the physics/rules/collision detection just to make the game a teensy bit more polished and the end result is something that simply feels good to play

@@V-Jes Oh I've read developers stories of Mario 64 & especially Sonic Adventure, & honestly I'd argue HAL had a more difficult time translating Kirby's gameplay into 3D than Nintendo did with Mario & Sonic Team did with Sonic, seeing as they stumbled upon countless amounts of obstacles for over 2 decades in perfectly translating Kirby's gameplay into 3D, such as having a hard time telling where Kirby was facing in 3D due to his round body figure, figuring out how Kirby's star exhaling ability, large number of copy abilities & movesets can work in 3D, how levels are going to be designed around Kirby's large number of copy abilities & movesets, etc. If it was so easy to make a 3D Kirby game nowadays, dedicated fans would've made a 3D Kirby game themselves long before HAL did with Forgotten Land, even with Nintendo's BS copyright strikes & especially given with all the tools & technology fans have in making a 3D Kirby game themselves.
@@metashade4218 yyeah your argument about kirby being harder to put into 3D just became even more BS when you say it was harder than bringing Mario to 3D who had no blueprint how to make 3D platformers and had to completely overhaul how levels while all Kirby did overall is just tale the already existing abilities and gameplay mechanics and combined it with the more linear type of 3D platforming Crash has used since the 90s as well, not to mention using lack of 3D fangames doesn't proof anything when even Pokémon lacks 3D fan games and Pokémon is the largest franchise in the world...

Another thing I really liked here was the level designs, most of them felt like real locations and (especially in the carnival and desert worlds) the designs of consecutive levels combined with their overworld positions made the game feel like one grand trek across the land
Just letting you know john since you kept mentioning Nintendo in this vid, Hal laboratory are entirely responsible for the development of the Kirby series, Nintendo are only responsible for publishing the games, not development.
While that's true, Nintendo does own the IP. A lot of people have this misconception that Nintendo can do whatever they want with their IP and so a 3D Kirby should have happened by now. The problem is they don't understand it's not about what Nintendo can do. It's about what they will do. And Nintendo almost always leaves these things up to the original developers. They don't tell other companies what to make (they can't anyway, they can only say "yes" or "no" to specific projects if Nintendo is publishing the game), though sometimes they do make requests. Basically even though Nintendo CAN do something, they won't do it if someone else created a franchise and especially if said company is still willing to work on it.

It's just so good. BTW Johnny, if you are curious about the whole "why did it take so long to make the jump to 3d?". There's actually a developer interview about Forgotten Land with BUTTLOAD of details of how they experimented and tried to make Kirby work in 3d... And it's really a lot more complex than it seems. It's really interesting stuff!

That’d be interesting, but they apparently can’t use Mallow and Geno due to Square owning the rights to them. Which is dumb since they obviously won’t be putting those two in any Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games, but hey, it be that way sometimes...
Planet Robot still the best in the franchise in terms of variety in the gameplay, amount of abilities and music, but this one is a solid first step into 3D and I hope it can be expanded from now.
It brings me true joy that Kirby is finally mainstream, I was scarred as a child, now all the children can be scarred for life by the creepy final levels!
Same, Star Allies ended up selling the series as too vanilla for most non-fans despite the good sales, so seeing Forgotten Land get much more attention from more sides of the fandom was awesome
@@kirbyofthestarsfan I see what they were trying to do with Star Allies (Return to dreamland 2.0), but it was just the worst possible time to release it, back when many Nintendo franchises were completely reinventing themselves. Also it should've been 40$, i still enjoyed it but its far from the puffballs best. It did have the best final boss in the history of the series (yes, better than C-R-O-W-N-E-D, Ultimate Life Form IDF-86, and Star Dream Soul OS), as well as the best final level lore dump, i will fight to the death on that.
The level themes might sound basic on paper but the added layer of 'post-apocalyptic earth' really does make then feel new. Bit to mention how bespoke every level feels, like real (once) living places. I'll take a shorter main campaign if every level is memorable.
I think HAL put a lot of effort into making Forgotten Land as smooth a transition as possible. Not hard to imagine an earlier Kirby game that had issues with copy abilities or movement feeling clunky or limited in a 3d space, but even how the camera interacts with attacks all work together to make the game feel as seamless as possible
You really wouldn't believe this is their first fully 3D traditional Kirby game playing this. Everything here feels like such a natural transition of Kirby's design that you'd swear they were doing this for years. Also, the difficulty curve in this game is probably the best since return to dreamland imo. It feels like a good progression of difficulty without necessarily having to put restrictions on yourself like the last few games.
I really enjoyed this game, seeing Kirby’s first jump into the 3D was phenomenal. We got to see the Tornado Copy Ability make its return and the Sleep ability has an actual use (once you’ve acquired the blueprint). The beast pack were fair, my favorites being Grimondo and Clawroline. Kind DeDeDe, Bonkers, and Mr. Frosty’s beast pack design was sick. The evolved Copy Abilities were a nice touch, changing the design and properties of said ability, some of which are nods to Copy Abilities that weren’t added into the game (e.g. Space Ranger utilizing the power of the Spark/Plasma ability). My personal favorite mouthful ability is the roller coaster. The car mode acted as the Wheel Copy Ability.
So glad you joined us for the beginning of this new era of Kirby! He really feels right at home in this new dimension and I hope you're excited for the future as I am!
11:36 SAME! I really wish they would have added a restart button for bosses.... Random yet somewhat related fun fact, though. If you play co-op. These conditions don't care if Bandana Dee takes damage. It only counts if Kirby takes damage. Found that out when playing in co-op mode.
Even though this game is still pretty standard Kirby, it does it so damn well that it's feeld like Kirby had always been in 3D. Also, This game is so fucking cute Elfilin is one of the cutest things I have ever seen from a Kirby game, and I want a plushie of him NOW. And sure, they removed the kiss... but Kirby and Waddle Dee spoon! This game made me squeal of delight, and i'm an adult guy! (Ignoring that I have a weakness to like this.)
Freeze in this game will freeze an enemy after a while and will do major damage after they shatter. Alongside the perfect defense, it can cheese bosses.
Easily one of my Top 3 Kirby games along with Planet Robobot and Triple Deluxe. This game is amazing and a perfect transition into 3D for the little pink puffball Speaking of the amazing OST, can I just say the remix of King Dedede's theme in this game is just straight fire? ^^
There have been interviews about Kirby in 3D. Part of it was Kirby’s round design making it harder for the player to tell which direction Kirby was facing. Then, it was how the inhale and spit mechanic would work in 3D. Games like Blowout Blast were essentially testing the waters for this game. Then it was how physics would work. Interview found here: www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/2022/ask-the-developer-vol-4-kirby-and-the-forgotten-land-part-1/
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the Mario 64 of Kirby games. And much like Mario 64, Kirby’s first 3D adventure had to make an amazing first impression.
@@skydiamsteam6005 I'm don't mind that personally. What I don't like is how they gutted the movesets. Really feel like the game should still tell you what you can do with your abilities, even if it was in the weapon shop or something.
@@thewolfgabe3656 That's not what I meant. I meant that we can no longer see what abilities do on the pause screen. That's been a thing since like... Super Star.
I had the absolute joy of getting to play this with my nephew. Bandanana Dee I felt was clearly worse and I would have prefferred a kirby of diff colour. Still was a joy and seeing my nephew face light up made me feel young again.
The no hit boss challenges and especially the ones that happen during mid levels were definitely a pain. One hit and you got to do it all over again. Just make sure you have a high upgraded powerup with you when doing those challenges.
I know the devs actually touched on why it took so long and it was actually a fascinating read, I recommend looking up the interview that the devs gave because there's more to it surprisingly. I think adapting the well established 2D formula just wasn't as easy as it sounded and some of the changes they made to Kirby and the ablilities he uses show that.
The linear design of the levels for this game was the right call, as while this may be the first mainline Kirby game in 3D, they needed to take it one step at a time, so perhaps the next time we get a 3D Kirby game, the environments will be much more expansive for exploration. And so far, I've been enjoying my time with the game, as I haven't played another Kirby game since Planet Robobot (which I really should get around to completing after not playing it for a few years), but with the success Forgotten Land is seeing currently, the future of seeing more 3D Kirby games looks promising.
This was exactly what the series needed imo. Couldn't really keep up with Kirby, despite liking the series back in the day. However, this game really did suck me back in (buh dum tss!)
This has become one of my favorite games to play. I recently just completed this game a week ago 100% Kirby and The Forgotten Land is an amazing game from beginning to end!
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is my new favorite Kirby game simply because I've always imagined what Kirby would be like in 3D. Now I have it, and I love it.
As for the game, I honestly never found backtracking to be an issue because unlike Crash, Kirby has some degree of camera panning control. Not to mention that Kirby moves slower and has a smaller hitbox than Crash. Otherwise, I more or less agree with everything you said.
@@raziyatheseeker not to mention that bottomless pits means nothing to Kirby unless you just float over them too long in this game. Even then, bottomless pits are no longer instant kills on Kirby.
The saddest thing about forgotten lands is that it has better star fox sections than star fox zero. And I wish I was kidding, I absolutely loved the air gliding sections in forgotten lands.
Slight correction on the video, Nintendo doesn't develops the Kirby games. That would be H.A.L Lab, with Nintendo just publishing the games. Personally, I enjoyed Forgotten Land, though collecting the Waddle Dee could have been better streamline as having to replays level does get tiring very quickly. My other criticism of the game is that forgotten land can be very obtuse at time as it does not do a good job in teaching the players the controls. I didn't know that Kirby could do a counter attack after dodging as the game never once taught me nor tell me.
This was a pleasant surprise. Also I would love for a future game to bring back Water, Leaf, Stone, Spark, Beam, Fighter, Wheel, and even Smash since I could easily imagine what their upgraded forms could be called. Also imagine the Resident Evil cast having to watch Kirby go on a rampage, tearing through zombies.
i'm surprised spear wasn't a hidden unlockable power since you know, bandana dee is well the spear moveset but WHO KNOWS, maybe we'll get some dlc or the next 3d game (after all forgotten land worked so well so who's to say another won't be made, i just hope they keep the upgrade system as well as more abilities) with more copy abilities
Kirby is the only gaming icon of the old 8bit era that somehow has never gotten a true 3D game and yet is also still getting games in general. That i can think of anyway. Even Megaman, while not directly as it was a spinoff thing, delved into 3D at some point.
What perfect timing. I reached 100% completion for this game earlier today. Absolutely loved this game and can't wait to see where they take the series next now that it's finally gone 3D.
9:22 "But Kirby can also do a dodge roll that with good timing can not only trigger bayonetta's witch time essentially, but you can then follow up with an incredibly damaging counter attack" Perfect dodging rewards you with a damaging counter attack? Just like resident evil 3 remake!
I feel the same way It’s a great Kirby with an excellent ending too but the game felt very safe for a lot of the stages and story didn’t progress until the end unfortunately The combat is surprisingly fun and is the best part of the game easily, all the bosses were fun and epic. For me I could have waited to get it cheaper but I still enjoyed it and I think people who haven’t played a lot of platformer will love it anyway so it’s easy to recommend
Wanna know an amazing cheese tactic for no hit runs for bosses? Ice and co-op. You’re invincible with the Ice abilities shield and with a buddy doing all the hard lifting it’s hilarious to just sit there and watch the boss do fuck all. Really, most challenges can be almost cheesed with no risk because Bandana dee is not affected by most challenges.
Take it from someone who just spent a month in the most unfriendly, challenging open world ever: sometimes super-linear weaponized adorableness for babies is just what the doctor ordered
OK, I know the drill is unwieldly, but I am genuinely surprised how many people dislike this powerup. The ability to make yourself semi-invulnerable is really useful and was one the main ways I beat the bosses without getting hit by memorizing the attacks that penetrated and training myself to recognize the cooldown times. Sort of makes me want to do a video on this because I legit think this powerup is underappreciated, but this is a game with only 14 powerups that generally do a good job on iterating on all of them. (though I wish there was a more complex version of fire rather than just making the attacks bigger)
I kind of wish there had been some tell as to what does go through your semi-immunity and what does not. It reminds me of guard/dodging, in that regard.
Hope the trip and wedding goes well for you man. I also remember being so excited for this game and I feel like its great. I also can't wait for the ratchet and clank marathon since I have played the games in recent years and loved them.

Funny thing I was re-watching his previous Kirby reviews and then this shows up. I thought you were gonna do this one until (at least) the next Kirby marathon with the 3DS games. This was a pleasant bamboozle Mr. Ortiz. XD

The only "lacking" thing in forgotten land is bossesand abilities imo. It's not even a flaw since I don't feel bored of any ability or boss it's super well balanced, it's just that we come from a game with a thousand lol
12:11 That's kind of underselling these levels if I'm honest, especially since this game's appeal is also going on much more experimental level tropes compared to the very vanilla ones Star Allies had, which was a letdown when that game came out
Also I know the script was probably very quick paced as a way of relaxation between a stressful month, but it's HAL Labs the ones that develop and conceptualize Kirby, not Nintendo, since that's kind of like brushing something like... Fire Emblem or Pokémon as just Nintendo instead of Intelligent Systems or Game Freak
Mainly bringing this up since it's on HAL's team the ones that kept Kirby as 2D for most of his career, not really Nintendo the one that was taking them long to make the jump
HAL Labs really made something special for Kirby’s first 3D adventure, and I personally think it stands out as more than just standard Kirby, it’s a step forward, and I can’t wait for future titles to refine this even more

@@vicctretamaj Ignore him, I've seen him make these comments before.
Ice’s perfect shield has one weakness, fire. And by god I think that there are at least 3 bosses dead set on making you lose ice.
Ice is pretty weak
It doesn't become useful (outside of certain scenarios) until its final upgrade
@@ddd7038 Well yeah that's when I started using it way more lol
The removal of the spinning aerial move was what made me dislike this ability it just feels so incomplete without it
Multiple reviewers yourself included mentioned Nintendo multiple times but Nintendo is NOT Kirby developer but simply a publisher.
What would be impressive if they did that like 20 years ago like everyone else did too...
@@V-Jes if you read HAL's development interview with the game, you'll realize that making a 3D Kirby game isn't as easy as putting Mario & Sonic in a 3D environment & then calling it a day...
@@metashade4218 aand if you read anything about game development in general they also say it's not easy, so pretending like Kirby is a special case when it comes to putting it in 3D is nothing but BS, especially when comparing it to putting someone like Sonic in 3D who's speed makes game development lot harder regardless what D it's in yet Sonic team succeeded in putting Sonic in 3D in the 90s...
Who would’ve guessed it took over 2 decades to see finally see Kirby getting a proper 3D entry.
3 decades.
To quote Meta Shade: "From what I read from developer interviews with this game, one of the main reasons why it took HAL so long to make a full on 3D Kirby game was because they had a hard time telling where Kirby was facing in 3D due to his round body figure, along with them having a hard time translating Kirby's Star spitting ability into 3D. I recommend reading their developer interviews with the game, it's actually quite fascinating in how much HAL struggled in putting Kirby into 3D & polishing its gameplay. Despite the struggles they had, it finally paid off because this game really does a phenomenal job transitioning the tried & true classic Kirby gameplay into 3D."

@@frankieseward8667 I think they mean that we got a taste of 3d Kirby with Air Ride in the early 2000s, but never committed to it until almost 20 years later. 30 years ago the best representations of 3d we had were Wolfenstein and Starfox.
@@JaidynReiman pretty sure Hal co-owns Kirby alongside Nintendo. Hence thr Nintendo/Hal copyrights I'm each game.

Oh wow, didn't expect this so soon. I was wagering on Johnny only covering this game on a second Kirby Marathon, but here we go!
I absolute adore this game, it kicked my Kirby hype full stop so much that I've just replayed Super Star Ultra and Triple Deluxe fully, and now I'm doing the same with Planet Robobot.

@@kirbyofthestarsfan I see what they were trying to do with Star Allies (Return to dreamland 2.0), but it was just the worst possible time to release it, back when many Nintendo franchises were completely reinventing themselves. It did have the best final boss in the history of the series (yes, better than C-R-O-W-N-E-D, Ultimate Life Form IDF-86, and Star Dream Soul OS), as well as the best final level lore dump, i will fight to the death on that.
Absolutely love this game. The level design, soundtrack, controls, abilities. So so good
The level themes might sound basic on paper but the added layer of 'post-apocalyptic earth' really does make then feel new. Bit to mention how bespoke every level feels, like real (once) living places. I'll take a shorter main campaign if every level is memorable.
At 27 years old this was actually my first & only Kirby game, so I absolutely love it
I think HAL put a lot of effort into making Forgotten Land as smooth a transition as possible.
"How is it going from wood to a toy an upgrade?" Three words Johnny.
Rapid.
Fire.
Hammer.

Random yet somewhat related fun fact, though. If you play co-op. These conditions don't care if Bandana Dee takes damage. It only counts if Kirby takes damage. Found that out when playing in co-op mode.

Speaking of the amazing OST, can I just say the remix of King Dedede's theme in this game is just straight fire?

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is my new favorite Kirby game simply because I've always imagined what Kirby would be like in 3D. Now I have it, and I love it.
I believe the reason was because so many of the copy abilities had multiple attacks that required certain inputs from the move controller.
Bit of a heads up, the ice ability has a perfect guard. Meaning you take no damage from any attack, think leaf from triple deluxe.
With the cost of dodging though. The Ice guard is a nice addition but there's still an urge to instinctively avoid certain attacks.

As for the game, I honestly never found backtracking to be an issue because unlike Crash, Kirby has some degree of camera panning control. Not to mention that Kirby moves slower and has a smaller hitbox than Crash. Otherwise, I more or less agree with everything you said.
Also, Kirby has a health meter. Crash dies in one hit without his mask buddy. Smacking into an obstacle or enemy would be less punishing.

Unfortunately, the "having to beat a level to save collectibles" has been around since the Wii era... for some reason. The older games didn't do that.

It’s a great Kirby with an excellent ending too but the game felt very safe for a lot of the stages and story didn’t progress until the end unfortunately
The combat is surprisingly fun and is the best part of the game easily, all the bosses were fun and epic.

The opening of the Forgotten Land is reminiscent of N Sanity Beach
