This is your friendly reminder that literally every part of this franchise began because a woman who lost her child found some shrooms, saved an old man from freezing to death, and sent a failed clone of said child to some Louisiana hillbillies.
Honestly, Heisenberg ended up being my favorite character in the whole game, which surprised me greatly. A huge factor is just how... weird his voice is. His enunciation is all over the place, with just the goofiest delivery. I feel like his speech really embodied the hostile, bizarre "camp" that Village was going for. I didn't expect it when I booted up the game, but it grew on me rapidly.
One thing I love is how each of the four lords represent the different types of games within the Resident Evil franchise. Lady Dimitrescu is the most obvious. Her castle, bossfights and overly-complex puzzles invoke the classic era of 1, 2, 3 and 0. Donna Beneviento's focus on growing tension, surreal hallucinations and outright terror is similar to Resident Evil 7. Moreau is the hardest to pinpoint but I can see his boss fight, personality and arena fitting right at home in RE4. And finally, Heisenberg has some MAJOR RE5/RE6 energy thanks to the heavy emphasis on combat and his downright ludicrous bossfight!
8:23 People joke about this, but I feel the reason for this is that you can't really do much to show a character being hurt in cutscenes in first person. Blood covering the screen works in gameplay but Ethan isn't actually dying in these scenarios, just getting fucked up.
It's funny, though, because when we were in third person, they didn't have quite so much call to "show a character being hurt" to emphasize the horror. It makes sense in the end when you find out what's up with Ethan that they show him sustaining and recovering from injuries more, but it still sticks out.
I just wish, you know, we could actually see his reaction? This game doesn't support vr, and while I understand why, I kinda wish we had cutscenes that shifted to third person for dramatic effect or trolling?
@@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard32 Oddly, there are a few scenes that very briefly shift out of Ethan's view, mostly around the Miranda boss fight, but also for scenes where Ethan approaches The Duke.

Man, Village was exactly the game I needed when it came out last year. Loved the flow, loved the layout, it was the kind of game I wanted to pick up again almost as soon as I was done with it. Felt like a great evolution of the game that came beforehand
It’s not RE4 (which became even more apparent to me after trying some handicap runs in) but its replay value is nearly just as amazing. And it’s a quibble, but I deeply appreciate the ability to craft ammo and that all guns have infinite ammo that can readily be turned on and off for variety. The story is also quite moving at times, even if the attempt to tie it to the overall RE storyline is pretty dumb; same as the attempt at a twist with Chris killing Mia in the beginning.
I was one who was kind of like "oh yay... another copy of re4 in terms of structure..." at first glance. Then I tried mixing up my brain, limiting myself only to the guns I was given for free. Surprisingly, it felt better structure with that mind than any other game did. Of course once and a while I would upgrade the guns, but as a whole... village is best played with the base weapon roster, because the game gives you plenty of bullets to either avoid or fight all threats, that's a welcome change
Lmao the game is so fucking underwhelming. The survival horror elements are almost none existent. The narrative was cringe and cheesy asf, Chris doesn't sound like Chris anymore due to being VAd by Carlos Oliveira. 14:14 Nah, there’s some distance between the two. RE4 took place in a remote area in Spain, which is Western Europe. The village of Mother Miranda is probably close to, if not within, Romania (given the currency, the Lei). The two locales do share similar aesthetics though.
@@matthewbuckley7757 yeah i absolutely loved it, even if the horror was less present than 7, i think it improved everything else, combat is more fun, the puzzles while easy were more diverse than 7 and the enemies variety was good too, it close off ethan's story really well
I can’t help but notice that Johnny hasn’t been pulling the normal amount of videos recently, but I greatly appreciate the passion he puts into his work! Another fun review! His deadpan singing at the beginning got me good for some reason😂
I think what makes the Resident Evil series easier to marathon as opposed to other franchises is that, with some exceptions, the games are rather short and barely go over the 8-10 hour mark, so you don't feel too fatigued to try out another one after finishing one. Also, I'm pretty Neil Newbon has stated he was going for a Nicolas Cage impression when playing Heisenberg and I think he did a good job.
Resident Evil 8 is a game that hit me on some deep level. I truly believe this game is deeper and more nuanced than people give it credit for. It even manages to give Ethan Winters a powerful complexity, which given how he was in VII is a feat. God, I absolutely love this game.
I don't know which makes me feel worse: that I'm old enough I actually got that Rockwell reference at the start of the Surfshark plug, or that I actually stopped and thought, "Um.... no, he didn't say those things! That line is from the chorus! It was Rockwell's song and he did the verses, but the chorus is *all* Michael Jackson!"
I can never make it through the ending of this game without bawling my eyes out. My daughter was just born about 6 months prior to this game's release and i felt the big dad energy Ethan had in it. The ending makes me cry every time 😢
Personally, I felt most of the locations were kinda mindless when it came to clearing and puzzle solving. For example, the castle section was basically a straight path through as the game constantly forced you into a single direction with puzzles that are solved in that same path (the worst offender being that mounted animal skull). Although I did enjoy these sections, I felt like they could have been much better. Oddly enough, Heisenberg's factory is the one portion of the game that actually delivered on the classic style RE gameplay to its fullest when you compare it to the likes of RE2 and RE7. The factory played like a maze with puzzles that required you to learn the layout. My only gripe with this section was that I wasn't a huge fan of the cyborg-factory aesthetic (but that's more my personal preference; I would have like this style of gameplay in the castle section). Idk, I feel like this made later playthroughs of the game seem kinda boring, since even though I already knew what I'm supposed to do, I wasn't allowed to deviate from the directed path.
No joke, I actually beat Resident Evil 8 late last night and I woke up this morning to find Johnny’s review haha! I knew I had to complete the game if I wanted to fully enjoy Johnny’s video.
Not being elitist just want to share some info: the classic monsters you reference being from the 50s isn't entirely wrong. Hammer (a UK studio) did do a reboot on many of the Universal monsters at that time. The Frankenstein you show in your clip is actually from 1931 and the 30s and 40s Universal movies are what we all know iconically for their respective monsters. These were inspired by books and short stories from England ranging all over the 1800s to even the early 1900s. A lot of the inspiration for that stuff goes back even further.
But they are still considered "fifties horror tropes" as a group, because that is when they were well-known in the mainstream. John and I both know where the stories come from, don't worry. Bride of Frankenstein is used there because I, being the editor, am just more familiar with that one and knew off the top of my head what clip might be good for that moment. (It's a pretty fun movie!)
@@OneTrueNobody Yep, it largely reconciles the odd changes James Whale and others made to Shelley’s novel by having the monster be more a force of nature versus a “sins of the father” intellectual in the vein of Milton’s Paradise Lost. The way Dr. Praetorious takes credit for the repurposed “cabin scene with the blind man” scene is pretty darn clever yet sinister at the same time. The “self-destruct” lever at the end is stupid though. Especially strange since Karloff was an established actor that could do serious roles, like Lugosi, so it’s not like Boris was incapable of a deeper form of method acting.
Capcom: Okay, Resident evil 7 did really good how we make sure people get 8? Employee: How about it the trailer we show them a 9 foot tall thicc vampire lady ? (One trailer later ) Capcom: GENUIS ! your getting a promotion
I thought the game progressed really well and Ethan actually had some character to him this time around. The environments in game were amazing to go through and learning more about the 4 lords kept me more even more engaged in the story more than what I already was. The characters were awesome too and I think your looking at it too much from solely a survival horror aspect when the game is multi-faceted. I definitely thought it was more enjoyable than RE7, but i respect your opinion. I’m just surprised to hear that from you. I guess it’s because I didn’t grow up in that era of resident evil where so many people crave horror more than anything. I’ve always enjoyed it more when they break up the horror with some action and I thought the game did a great job at doing that.
When u said mummy’s John’s I highly agree that should be the next Resident evil game Egyptian themed, also I nearly highly agree on your ranked poll on the games and can’t wait for the next reviews on the spin-offs such as revelation 1-2
This game felt very Dark Souls-esque, what with the 4 lords, the castle looming over the ruined village, the distinct areas. I haven't played 4 but the switch from 7 to 8 was definitely my cup of tea. Probably too soon, 6 was only two games ago, but yeah, it was the sweet spot. I still prefer RE2Remake for the horror+camp, but for the action+camp+horror, Village was a treat
Did anyone else find it slightly immersion breaking that all the native characters in the village sound British or American, when it's supposed to be Eastern Europe? They all spoke English too. I think having that Hungarian/Romanian style accent would help sell the homage to classic vampire/werewolf horror that they were going for. Resident Evil 4 was set in Spain and the local goons actually sounded Spanish and spoke another language (though admittedly it was more Mexican than Spanish but whatever)
I know it's not sustainable but I'm loving the quick turnaround time on these videos while still maintaining the same quality I expect from a Vs. review. Keep up the great work Johnny
I think RE7 and 8 should be viewed as one, just divided up into two parts. RE7 being the intro and transformation, and RE8 being more of a final calling type of thing. RE7 isn't as action packed (maybe?), but RE8 ramps it up. Viewed that way, it's an escalation. The opening of RE8 would then act as more of a break in some way before throwing you back into the action-intense madness.
We're less than a year from the 10th FREAKING Anniversary of your Sonic 06 review and the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, can't wait to see your review of that and what will you do for the Anniversary?
Village is good and I put more hours into it than 7 (probably just because it's a longer game) but for me the setting and vibe of 7 was great. My wife didn't want me to play 7 without her as she was super into it too (shes not a gamer) but 8 she watched for about an hour and checked out. I hope the next takes more from 7 as that to me was the perfect amount of scary and fun.
I heard the main reason 8 was more action packed and goofy is Japanese players complained to Capcom that RE7 was too scary so they pulled back not to alienate their home audience
That actually make sense, because who in their right mind would complain that 7 was too scary, so you see haters, the japanese audience are the ones you gotta blame for making village less scary
Great video as always! Just one thing, though: the villagers in RE4 all speak (imperfect) Spanish (with a Spanish accent), so I doubt they'd be in Eastern Europe ;)
Funny thing, the Duke actually knows the Merchant, even referencing one of his quotes, and calling him an old friend. Seems like he survived RE4.

14:14 Nah, there’s some distance between the two. RE4 took place in a remote area in Spain, which is Western Europe. The village of Mother Miranda is probably close to, if not within, Romania (given the currency, the Lei).
The two locales do share similar aesthetics though.
This was one of my favorite games of 2021 and one of my favorite moments is the baby monster segment, Pure great horror atmosphere
Unfortunately a lot people hate the game which is a damn shame because its one of the best re game for me
@@slaviclad9705 Well some people just don’t have the same opinion I have but either way it’s still a great game
@@matthewbuckley7757 yeah i absolutely loved it, even if the horror was less present than 7, i think it improved everything else, combat is more fun, the puzzles while easy were more diverse than 7 and the enemies variety was good too, it close off ethan's story really well
@@slaviclad9705 I’ve enjoyed 7 to but having to save space for items is a bit annoying
Oh I do love when a refresh of the page gives a good video to watch
12:10 Honestly I think he's trying to go for a Nick Cage impression with Heisenberg.
I can’t help but notice that Johnny hasn’t been pulling the normal amount of videos recently, but I greatly appreciate the passion he puts into his work! Another fun review! His deadpan singing at the beginning got me good for some reason😂
Honestly, I felt the same way when I heard the case system and merchant were back.
Considering the entire story of Resident evil is centered around a flower from Africa, mummies wouldn't be too far fetched for Resident evil...
I can never make it through the ending of this game without bawling my eyes out. My daughter was just born about 6 months prior to this game's release and i felt the big dad energy Ethan had in it. The ending makes me cry every time 😢
I just hope one day we get back the puzzle difficulty settings that increase their complexity on harder difficulties
Fortunately, RE4R did this!
This game is a throwback. It’s fun it doesn’t take itself seriously and for those reasons it’s memorable
Now that the review has come. Its time to marathon all the reviews again!
Who wants to watch a Review Video at 5 in the morning?
*SomecallmeJohnny has uploaded a new video* OH BOY!
10:28 Considering who the makeshift mascot for this game was, I can already smell the title of the next game being dominatrix xD
No joke, I actually beat Resident Evil 8 late last night and I woke up this morning to find Johnny’s review haha! I knew I had to complete the game if I wanted to fully enjoy Johnny’s video.
Johnny’s on fire with all the videos this month and I ain’t complaining.
@@OneTrueNobody fair enough. I appreciate the reply! Bride of Frankenstein is probably one of the better 30s classic monster movies.
Ah yes, Resident Evil Mommy.
Great review as always. And yes, I'd be down for a Doom series marathon.
18:23 lmao nice Rich Evans reference, Johnny!
Hopefully he doesn't get *A-*
Horrible virus. (Especially one that would turn him into a flesh eating zombie)
Brother Johnny has been pumping out these vids one after the other, whoa.
17:06 Why is it timed like this and smoothly too?
Oh, fuck yeah. I would kill for a Resident Evil game that takes place Egypt and has mummies and stuff
That would be wild!
Seriously though, everyone calls this the end of Ethan’s story when they should be calling the origin story of the ENTIRE FRANCHISE!
With a character named Heisenberg, I was expecting a Breaking Bad reference somewhere. XD
Capcom: Okay, Resident evil 7 did really good how we make sure people get 8?
Employee: How about it the trailer we show them a 9 foot tall thicc vampire lady ?
(One trailer later )
Capcom: GENUIS ! your getting a promotion
Man Johnny. You've been hard at work getting these videos out as quickly as you can.
This video was amazing, of course, this is to be expected from somecallmejohnny. But I wish it was a megaman zero video soon
When u said mummy’s John’s I highly agree that should be the next Resident evil game Egyptian themed, also I nearly highly agree on your ranked poll on the games and can’t wait for the next reviews on the spin-offs such as revelation 1-2
10:58
Capcom: Fine Konami, “I’ll do it myself…”
Heisenberg is such a fun character to do an impression of.
The first 10 seconds of this video is something I never thought I needed, but happy we got.
Oh Heisenberg... you take magneto's power from X-men and add on the name and hat from breaking bad and you have a pretty good lord in RE8.
Ethan: “I MIGHT BE A FUCKING ZOMBIE, BUT NO ONE TOUCHES MY FAMILY AND LIVES!….except chris. He’s cool if a little rude.”
8:49 Piers, I guess? He probably didn't wanna chance a repeat... but telling Ethan would have _probably_ let him stay undead just a bit longer...
I know it's not sustainable but I'm loving the quick turnaround time on these videos while still maintaining the same quality I expect from a Vs. review. Keep up the great work Johnny
Didn’t expect roxas to make a cameo here. Good touch.
10:37
PERFECT
I knew there was a problem and I knew what it was, but you said it perfectly
My dude Johnny out here putting in work!!! Keep it up brother you’re a legend!!! Been watching since I was 15 and now I’m 24 lol
Kinda like a movie
@@polytanksan5761 Yeah!
Now that song is stuck in my head. Thank you Johnny and Surfshark VPN
I knew the moment when johnny was quoting the song for the sponsor that whoa was gonna be there for comedic effect.
I was scared this was just going to cash in on the success of the last one, but by gosh this game was a treat.
We're less than a year from the 10th FREAKING Anniversary of your Sonic 06 review and the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie, can't wait to see your review of that and what will you do for the Anniversary?
I feel like a pig jump scaring you would make you love bacon rather than hate it.
I just woke up and suddenly new SomeCallMeJohnny video? Neat!
The goddamn waooohooooh in the surf shark ad just about killed me. Fantastic
Heisenberg always sounded like ALF to me
Some of the Crypt Zombies in RE6 were pretty much mummies just not bandaged.
