As a heads up: part of the reason the Baker House and its surrounding areas are so strange and "video gamey" is because they were designed by the same man that Spencer hired/kidnapped/enslaved to build his mansion in the Arklay Mountains. RE7/RE8 just love to reference George Trevor.
Technically, George Trevor didn't *build* their house. It's easy to infer that after a trip to the Arklay region they saw some of his work there and were impressed, and so they contracted Trevor to do a bit of remodeling for them. After they went crazy with mold-madness we can infer that they went crazy-er, and piled some madness of their own design on top of the Trevor inventions... which is why all their locked doors and keys have dead creatures duct-taped to them. Generally speaking the modern games are better at narratively justifying weird secret passages and all. Trevor didn't design the Castle from RE8, but there's a book in Ethan's house that confirms that Trevor did *study* medieval castles, possibly even that one in particular, and so took inspiration from their design in his own work.
After playing RE2 remake, RE7 was the game I was most intrigued to try because of how fascinating I found its atmosphere and setting. Playing parts of that game in VR hit different too

I know this is a week old. But the easy route is make sure you get the Machine Gun from the oil tanker and have a Reload Coin (which sadly you can only buy as a MTX) or use at least 1 of the 2 Stabilizers you find in game. Same effect either way, they all decrease reload times for all guns and they DO stack. A decent amount of ammo too is a given.

I sunk so many hours into Re 7. Did multiple playthroughs to get all the bonuses like the circular saw, secrets of defense, and essence. They were essential for Ethan to survive madhouse difficulty and get infinite ammo.

Late response here but you especially see this in the "Daughters" DLC. Makes you feel kinda bad about having to kill the parents and briefly strand Zoe. Because as annoying as Mia was at times, a husband who travels to the middle of nowhere to look for his wife who's been gone for 3 years is gonna pick her. But yeah screw Lucas no matter what.

I love this game It scares the absolute crap out of me though. There's an argument going around that changing it to first person takes away the tension that fixed camera angles give you because you can't see where certain enemies are I however think first person adds more tension, because you don't have the advantage of at least seeing around and behind your character the way that you eventually will in the classic games once they are in the same camera frame as You are I find nervously checking what's behind me way more intense Especially if you know you're being chased and you can't see how close they are
It's not the first person what adds most of that additional tension I think... it's the amazing sound, combined with the atmosphere of mystery (no stupid zombies) and the graphics. And the intelligent choices from the developers. It's hard to be afraid when you have a magnum, a grenade launcher, two shotguns, etc... but then they take everything away from you... In the ship, near the end, fear was so strong for me that I started feeling sick. Like, it was affecting my health. Nobody with heart problems should ever play this game.

Resident Evil 7 is one of the biggest surprises in all of gaming imo. I thought the game was not gonna click with me at all, but I ended up absolutely adoring it. This is one of my favorite games of the generation, and one of my favorites in the RE series. I even love Ethan as a protagonist.
It's awful and threw away what little there was left of the series' DNA. Now it's just a random horror game with the title Resident Evil. It's grossly westernized and a dead series, through and through.

I don't think Resident evil dna resides in zombies and the third person camera, those are surface level aspects. The mechanics are there, the style is there, the technical brilliance is there.

In the defense of the Mia and Evelyn models, you could argue that Mia’s “bug-eyed” expression was to unnerve the player, considering that she’s the first danger you encounter in the game. Also Eveline is a little hellspawn twisted by science, her Chucky face pretty much fits her to a T
I'm more inclined to think they were still figuring out the engine, as the face models and animations have been continually improving. Note how awkward and derpy Claire looks in RE2make, but by the time we reach RE3make and RE8 they had gotten things a lot tighter, and people look less goofy and awkward. Also, Mia's hair is a huge distraction in RE7. They hadn't dialed in the hair physics yet.
After the Ethan plot twist in Village, RE7 feels a bit different for me, there are some things that they foreshadowed that had gone way over my head the first time, the most obvious one being Ethan's hand actually hinting at something. It's just amazing how we or even Ethan never questioned how he managed to get his hand back and just rolled with it.
Nah they didnt think about all that ahead of time, RE7 just had that crazy Evil Dead tone where things like that made sense, it'swhat made the game so amazing in the first place. RE8's ending ruins it for me a little bit tbh, like 7 is already a better game in my opinion, it sucks that 8 had to go and mess with it

This game didn’t just reboot the Resident Evil franchise, but it put Capcom on the current hot streak that it’s been on the last half a decade or so. First game to use the RE Engine, which developing that has arguably been the best move Capcom made maybe in its history depending on how far they stretch it. They’ve used it in everything from MH Rise, DMC5, RE games, and even Ghosts and Goblins reboot.
As Someone who did not find Resident Evil 7 Scare for like 90% of it and then played the PS4 VR version I can attest hot damn that just ramps up the scares, even when I knew what was coming it still got me and the atmosphere is enhanced ten fold.

As someone who is a huge RE fan I gotta be honest and say this one is my favorite. Why? Call me a “fake fan” but prior to this, but I never found the games scary, not even close. I never understood why people claimed these games made them shit their pants when they obviously pay tribute to the works of George A. Romero, who by the way, directed the RE2 commercial. This game however made me afraid to move my analog stick even an inch. This game is a combination of Evil Dead 1 and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

@@supermariofan03 in my opinion 7 and 8 aren't pure psychological horror either. 7 is more body horror and Japanese horror (creepy little girl?). 8 is just a mash up of different horror tropes depending on the Lord's area you are in. Donna (Doll Lady) I'll agree is definitely physiological. Especially the "baby" part. As for Silent Hill, I'll agree 100%. Both series I consider horror but on opposite ends of the Spectrum as you can tell.
Resident Evil 7 is probably my favorite horror game ever made. It's just so unrelentingly scary throughout the playthrough that you can't help but love it. RE8 was really good too. House Beneviento is one of the scariest sequences in all of entertainment out there.

Thank you for calling out the use of the new RE Engine, it's so great to see a game NOT made in Unreal. Like Unreal can look pretty decent but devs HAVE to clearly know exactly how to use it or everything looks like wet clay. The engine definitely matters, and being built from the ground up with it's own engine is absolutely part of what makes 7 so good. That said- the hair is not great.

I love how this game turned out. I didnt end up playing it until Village was announced and to be fair I am glad I waited. I didn't think I would love it like I did and know Village was coming made this game even more hype 😂 Great vid keep up the good work bro!
Just finished playing this for the first time and man this was so much better than RE5 and RE6. Unlike 6 which went on WAY too long, this was a way more comfortable 7.5 hours. Don't know where I'd rank this overall as well as the Revelations games but still it was very good.
Talk about timing! Last weekend I finished Leon's RE6 campaign on my PS3 and last monday I finished RE7 on my laptop thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The difference between them is abismal in terms of quality. Sometimes I was so scared I even played with my lights on ir with the game muted and some background happy music. It was an amazing experience. Truly one the best REs out there and one of the best games I've ever played. "Go, tell aunt Rhody..."
So fun fact about the company behind Eveline in this game, The Connections: They have a history with Wesker. Back during Code Veronica, Wesker ran a covert operations team called H.C.F., who were the private army of an unnamed "Rival Company" to Umbrella (I believe they were actually RE6's "The Family", though that has been unconfirmed as of yet). The file in RE7 on the creation of Eveline mentions that H.C.F. allied with The Connections shortly before Code Veronica and helped them develop the early stages of the Mold and Eveline (A-Series). Considering what RE8 establishes about Spencer and Miranda's connection, and Miranda's connection to The Connections, I think it's possible that it was H.C.F.'s meeting with The Connections that led to Wesker investigating into Spencer more. As well as beginning to show an interest in parasites like the Plagas, inspired by Miranda's use of the Cadau. Furthermore, The Connections sent Eveline on the boat as hiding after they found out she was being sought by two other organizations. The B.S.A.A., and unnamed rival organization. While I previously assumed that was Blue Umbrella, it may actually have been the "Rival Company" / The Family. Leading another connection back to the people who empowered Wesker.
While it's true anyone not familiar with Resident Evil can start with this one, they still put a lot of callbacks and Easter Eggs for longtime RE fans. Also, yeah the game in VR is SCARY AF! I only played in VR for about an hour (I've not even gotten used to VR back then without getting motion sickness lol), but that hour almost made me cream my pants seriously hahaha. Great video as always, Johnny! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Resident Evil VIllage.
My first Resident Evil. Loved it so much that I played almost all of the other games. (Still wish Capcom would rerelease the classic three games, and CVX on Switch.) excellent review man!
Laughs at Johnny telling us to check for mold...Australia doing that at the moment after all the flooding. Don't think there's anything in the Brisbane River that will mutate us though. If I can clean muddy wet laptops without becoming homicidal I think we're fine.
RE7: Biohazard was the return to basics the series needed after the DID that 6 was. In fact, I would say that 7 is the scariest game in the series. Seriously, no other game in the franchise made me as nervous playing it as much as 7 did.
I still find REmake 1 and 2 scarier, but that's because I'm less intimidated by disturbing imagery than I am by the possibility that a decision I make may send me up the creek without a paddle, and the exploration and resource-management game in first two remakes is a lot stronger than in 7.
@@OneTrueNobody While I agree to a point about resource management being more important in REmake 1's case, I was more referring to the atmosphere and suspense in 7 that got me the jitters. By the time I finally played REmake, zombies were already played out in my eyes, while I went in completely blind for 7 and as such had no idea what to expect. It also helps that unlike previous games, you're playing as a literal Average Joe who has no idea what kind of horrors he's getting into.
Good news is a modder called beamdog is working on PC VR for RE7 and 8, and already has it out for Remake 2 and 3, so you won't need a PSVR headset. Plus there's going to be a next-gen update for 7 and the remakes that adds raytracing support and other little things too.
Seeing the date of when RE7 came out just reminds me of when I was working, watching Netflix a lot, and waking up at 5 AM; even on Saturdays. Good times, good times.
To help the drag factor of the Mia section: there's a hidden handgun and a few bullets for it in a side-room that you can acquire quite early into the section, giving you a limited means to fight back. I showed where it was during the BSC run, actually. It's not too much but with good aim you can pop a few heads, because the crawling Molded are particularly fragile.
In RE5, there's a file that mentions an "Ethan W." as an Umbrella employee. Is there a hidden meaning, or did Capcom just reuse a name? The answer won't surprise you.
I wouldn't be surprised if an original plan was to have him been involved with Umbrella in the past. Maybe he just worked on the pharmaceutical side in some form

I've said before, and I still stand by this, RE7 VR is the best horror experience I've ever had. I love that the game doesn't create any restrictions or change any gameplay elements to compensate for the VR. It's 100% the same game. Aiming with your head feels great -- something I'd like to see in an eventual GTA V VR mode. Being able to literally peek your head around a corner just adds so much immersion. Love it!
I remember when I first played this and managed to down Jack the first time. I tried attacking him figuring it'd be like zombies that seem dead but get back up. Suddenly, "THAT'S NOT VERY NICE!" and I was too low on ammo to do anything besides die.
I only recently played through and finished 7 for the first time and really enjoyed it. I had been hesitant for a long time because the ‘house in the woodsI’ angle didn’t grab me, but man there is something about that Baker house front hall that just sticks with me now. Great stuff, especially in VR!
Evelyn is the best kept secret of gaming so far. Because until This video, I was unaware of there being aNOTHER character, who turns out to be the antagonist overall. I knew about the wheelchair-bound Grandmother, but never about the younger her. And I've watched a number of streamers playing RE7. Somehow I must have been busy during those moments of little all-black girl saying "hi" to everyone LOL

I remember being blown away from the graphics and voice acting when this first came out.
I still am. It looks photorealistic in some places, impressive for a game that's 5 years old.

Resident Evil 7 is one of the biggest surprises in all of gaming imo. I thought the game was not gonna click with me at all, but I ended up absolutely adoring it. This is one of my favorite games of the generation, and one of my favorites in the RE series. I even love Ethan as a protagonist.
Shout out to you for pushing through your personal biases to give something a fair shot!
It's awful and threw away what little there was left of the series' DNA. Now it's just a random horror game with the title Resident Evil. It's grossly westernized and a dead series, through and through.
@CYB3R2K30 It's 100% resident Evil. There are no zombies and it's played on first person but the pace, the puzzles, the amazing sound, the atmosphere, the mansion, the areas... 100% resident evil. I don't think Resident evil dna resides in zombies and the third person camera, those are surface level aspects.
The mechanics are there, the style is there, the technical brilliance is there.

In the defense of the Mia and Evelyn models, you could argue that Mia’s “bug-eyed” expression was to unnerve the player, considering that she’s the first danger you encounter in the game.
Also Eveline is a little hellspawn twisted by science, her Chucky face pretty much fits her to a T
When she is not making faces she is relatively cute. Her facial expressions are kind of evil though.
I'm more inclined to think they were still figuring out the engine, as the face models and animations have been continually improving. Note how awkward and derpy Claire looks in RE2make, but by the time we reach RE3make and RE8 they had gotten things a lot tighter, and people look less goofy and awkward.
Also, Mia's hair is a huge distraction in RE7. They hadn't dialed in the hair physics yet.
After the Ethan plot twist in Village, RE7 feels a bit different for me, there are some things that they foreshadowed that had gone way over my head the first time, the most obvious one being Ethan's hand actually hinting at something. It's just amazing how we or even Ethan never questioned how he managed to get his hand back and just rolled with it.
Nah they didnt think about all that ahead of time, RE7 just had that crazy Evil Dead tone where things like that made sense, it'swhat made the game so amazing in the first place.
RE8's ending ruins it for me a little bit tbh, like 7 is already a better game in my opinion, it sucks that 8 had to go and mess with it

This game didn’t just reboot the Resident Evil franchise, but it put Capcom on the current hot streak that it’s been on the last half a decade or so. First game to use the RE Engine, which developing that has arguably been the best move Capcom made maybe in its history depending on how far they stretch it. They’ve used it in everything from MH Rise, DMC5, RE games, and even Ghosts and Goblins reboot.
This game was AMAZING in VR, especially the first house and revisits there for new areas.
As Someone who did not find Resident Evil 7 Scare for like 90% of it and then played the PS4 VR version I can attest hot damn that just ramps up the scares, even when I knew what was coming it still got me and the atmosphere is enhanced ten fold.

As someone who is a huge RE fan I gotta be honest and say this one is my favorite. Why?
Call me a “fake fan” but prior to this, but I never found the games scary, not even close. I never understood why people claimed these games made them shit their pants when they obviously pay tribute to the works of George A. Romero, who by the way, directed the RE2 commercial.
This game however made me afraid to move my analog stick even an inch. This game is a combination of Evil Dead 1 and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Late response I know. But play the original version of RE3 where Nemesis was a lot more random and could go through doors unlike regular zombies. You'll shit a brick or two.

@@supermariofan03 in my opinion 7 and 8 aren't pure psychological horror either. 7 is more body horror and Japanese horror (creepy little girl?). 8 is just a mash up of different horror tropes depending on the Lord's area you are in. Donna (Doll Lady) I'll agree is definitely physiological. Especially the "baby" part. As for Silent Hill, I'll agree 100%. Both series I consider horror but on opposite ends of the Spectrum as you can tell.
Resident Evil 7 is probably my favorite horror game ever made. It's just so unrelentingly scary throughout the playthrough that you can't help but love it.
RE8 was really good too. House Beneviento is one of the scariest sequences in all of entertainment out there.

Thank you for calling out the use of the new RE Engine, it's so great to see a game NOT made in Unreal. Like Unreal can look pretty decent but devs HAVE to clearly know exactly how to use it or everything looks like wet clay. The engine definitely matters, and being built from the ground up with it's own engine is absolutely part of what makes 7 so good.
That said- the hair is not great.

Just finished playing this for the first time and man this was so much better than RE5 and RE6. Unlike 6 which went on WAY too long, this was a way more comfortable 7.5 hours.
Don't know where I'd rank this overall as well as the Revelations games but still it was very good.

Talk about timing! Last weekend I finished Leon's RE6 campaign on my PS3 and last monday I finished RE7 on my laptop thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The difference between them is abismal in terms of quality. Sometimes I was so scared I even played with my lights on ir with the game muted and some background happy music.
It was an amazing experience. Truly one the best REs out there and one of the best games I've ever played.

So fun fact about the company behind Eveline in this game, The Connections: They have a history with Wesker. Back during Code Veronica, Wesker ran a covert operations team called H.C.F., who were the private army of an unnamed "Rival Company" to Umbrella (I believe they were actually RE6's "The Family", though that has been unconfirmed as of yet). The file in RE7 on the creation of Eveline mentions that H.C.F. allied with The Connections shortly before Code Veronica and helped them develop the early stages of the Mold and Eveline (A-Series).
Considering what RE8 establishes about Spencer and Miranda's connection, and Miranda's connection to The Connections, I think it's possible that it was H.C.F.'s meeting with The Connections that led to Wesker investigating into Spencer more. As well as beginning to show an interest in parasites like the Plagas, inspired by Miranda's use of the Cadau.
Furthermore, The Connections sent Eveline on the boat as hiding after they found out she was being sought by two other organizations. The B.S.A.A., and unnamed rival organization. While I previously assumed that was Blue Umbrella, it may actually have been the "Rival Company" / The Family. Leading another connection back to the people who empowered Wesker.
While it's true anyone not familiar with Resident Evil can start with this one, they still put a lot of callbacks and Easter Eggs for longtime RE fans. Also, yeah the game in VR is SCARY AF! I only played in VR for about an hour (I've not even gotten used to VR back then without getting motion sickness lol), but that hour almost made me cream my pants seriously hahaha.

RE7: Biohazard was the return to basics the series needed after the DID that 6 was. In fact, I would say that 7 is the scariest game in the series. Seriously, no other game in the franchise made me as nervous playing it as much as 7 did.
I still find REmake 1 and 2 scarier, but that's because I'm less intimidated by disturbing imagery than I am by the possibility that a decision I make may send me up the creek without a paddle, and the exploration and resource-management game in first two remakes is a lot stronger than in 7.
@@OneTrueNobody While I agree to a point about resource management being more important in REmake 1's case, I was more referring to the atmosphere and suspense in 7 that got me the jitters. By the time I finally played REmake, zombies were already played out in my eyes, while I went in completely blind for 7 and as such had no idea what to expect. It also helps that unlike previous games, you're playing as a literal Average Joe who has no idea what kind of horrors he's getting into.

Good news is a modder called beamdog is working on PC VR for RE7 and 8, and already has it out for Remake 2 and 3, so you won't need a PSVR headset. Plus there's going to be a next-gen update for 7 and the remakes that adds raytracing support and other little things too.

To help the drag factor of the Mia section: there's a hidden handgun and a few bullets for it in a side-room that you can acquire quite early into the section, giving you a limited means to fight back. I showed where it was during the BSC run, actually. It's not too much but with good aim you can pop a few heads, because the crawling Molded are particularly fragile.

I wouldn't be surprised if an original plan was to have him been involved with Umbrella in the past. Maybe he just worked on the pharmaceutical side in some form

Resident Evil 7 in VR brings this game to another level of awesomeness
I've said before, and I still stand by this, RE7 VR is the best horror experience I've ever had. I love that the game doesn't create any restrictions or change any gameplay elements to compensate for the VR. It's 100% the same game. Aiming with your head feels great -- something I'd like to see in an eventual GTA V VR mode. Being able to literally peek your head around a corner just adds so much immersion. Love it!

I remember when I first played this and managed to down Jack the first time. I tried attacking him figuring it'd be like zombies that seem dead but get back up. Suddenly, "THAT'S NOT VERY NICE!" and I was too low on ammo to do anything besides die.
