In today's episode, Resident Evil 4 got a remake. Was this ultimately necessary? I hope so, I spent money on this.

3:36 I just want to point out... Ashley being able to operate a bulldozer was actually a part of her story. Ashley was studying to be an engineer and had the permit to operate large machinery. It wasn't mentionned in the game, but it was in other medium.
"Leeeeon! I'm forklift certified!"
What other media?
@@lizdevine2525 I don't remember which one it was, but Capcom published either a book or a magazine to explain more of the game, it's story, the stories of both Louis and Ashley and a bunch of other stuff. I'm pretty sure it was a magazine more than a book, but I have a few games in mindfor which game developers did the same thing, so I'm hesitating between the 2.
@@lefteron6804 Well, she's got one more skill than half the soldiers I know IRL.
They're lying, I looked online to verify the claim and found absolutely nothing. Anyone can technically operate a bulldozer, and she was the only one who could do it becuase Leon had to fend off the Ganado. @@lizdevine2525
I’m just glad Capcom kept the “Where’s everyone going, bingo?” line in the opening level. You can’t beat the classics.
Don’t forget “Hasta luego”
The va for Leon said it was almost not in the game
I appreciate how Ashley talks more besides complaining and yelling fir leon to help her
"BINGO!" - Every character in sonic heros
But they didn't kept ''no, thanks bro''
I’m sure he noticed the charms are the in-game models from the OG 4, but since he didn’t point it out I LOVED that detail. And the shooting gallery was fun if frustrating.
THIS. i loved that the charms were based on the OG models. and i very much agree that the shooting gallery was fun yet frustrating. every time i missed a skull, i raged lmao
So one thing I want to talk about the story is that I *really* like how Krauser and Luis are utilized in Leon's personal journey here. Leon's personal conflict has to do with the RC-incident and his government training making him lose the idealism he had as a rookie. Luis embodies that idealism as a fan of Don Quixote, a man who's obsessed with the romantic notions of knighthood. Krauser, being the one who molded Leon into what he is now, symbolically works as the one to kill Luis. It's something I can really appreciate here.
I also agree with your assessment on REmake 4 is more of a compliment to the original rather than a replacement.
Kind of funny this decade has been referencing ALOT of Don Quixote as of lately;
Like it's almost creeping back into modern culture.
(Cause I believe Elden Ring also payed a reference, with a Lance being stuck on the side of a Windmill?)
@@Mekboy_ComputerMonster
Interesting. I honestly didn't know much about it outside of being familiar with the title of the play ''The man from La Mancha''. It was until RE4 did I actually look deeper into what it was about. Probably gonna give it a read.
Haven't watched the video yet just scrolling through comments to see what people are saying and I disagree with the game being a compliment completely, it's a spit in the face. RE4 is one of those games where there's not a single thing I can GENUINELY and LEGITIMATELY hold against it and the remake is like a what if scenario where "what if Resident Evil 4 wasn't good?" I'm almost done with the game and during my time I haven't felt anything but boredom and disappointment, it lacks soul and is just such a downer of an experience. It's getting its dick sucked dry for now but I'm calling it, it's not gonna age well when being compared to the original. Crowbcat's video sums up the conversation better than I could.
@@scottroxford5715 insane take.
@@arbyw.1889 Speaking from experience, legit the only way I've been able to have any sort of fun was to buy an exclusive ticket (with actual money) to get the exclusive for the Handcannon (that they basically give you for free) and stuck with that for the rest of the game. Everything in this game just feels wrong.
I just finished the Resident Evil marathon and now this drops? I love you Johnny
Yeah wait until Johnny does a round 2 on Resident Evil 4 remake being that Separate Ways DLC is out and costs 10 dollars plus taxes.
The original RE3 had a sidestep that wasn't in any of the other classic RE games, so I don't think it's a problem or mistake to lose it for RE4's remake. The parry feels much better and keeps you closer to the action, so I feel it accomplishes the same gameplay loop as the original RE4. That version was all about forcing you to close the gap and melee, so now the parry lets you do it faster.
Truth the parry is awesome
Agreed. The parry is insanely satisfying when you get it down right.
Yeah parry is timing on easy and normal difficulty but hardcord and professional difficulty minimize the parry knife techniques. Good part I like having Leon bomber jacket and RPD outfit for Leon is getting a S plus in the Mercenaries mini game for all characters and the selection stages it's about 500 thousands points.
Yes! A Devil May Cry marathon! I wish you luck with the series, especially with 2 and the reboot (to an extent).
I still can't believe Devil May Cry pulled an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness on us.
Where we had the originals, then they decided to reboot it, then they decided "Nah, lets go back to the original story and continue it."
We have 6 games to look forward to.
@Shin Computer-Monster ("Sir Talks-Alot") You can thank Inafune for the need to make games cater to the western audience.
Dee Em Cee 2 is bets geaem
I did not mind the reboot and complete it on normal but 2 I still not completed and 3 and 4 I just done one or two levels, and 1 I completed
I’m just saying, since this game released, I have been waiting on THIS man’s review 😂

I love this game with all my heart and soul.
Resident evil ❤
When I went into the shooting range for the first time I went "Holy crap this song SLAPS"
When I heard this was being remade, I was firmly in the camp of those who felt it wasn't needed at all. But damn this game impressed me.
Also looking forward to your devil may cry series
What a professional and great review highlighting both RE4 games equally
1:46
Wow! I can't believe Capcom announced its 10-year plan for the Resident Evil series just as Johnny finished his sentence. Coincidences are crazy like that...
I've played and beaten this game 4 times in the span of a month.
So I liked it just a tiny bit.

@@Ihatevideogames334 What did you think of Shredder's Revenge?
Honestly a little surprising, I played it front to back about seven times, with another 3(?) unfinished playthroughs, in about two weeks. And I freaking _hate_ RE4 Remake. I'm honestly a tad surprised people who actually like it don't play even more than me, not dismissive or anything, just mildly surprised.
@@johandori7795
Why the fuck did you play it that many times? 😂
i love some of the new music in the game, makes some parts alot more exciting,
like the village fight, cabin fight and clocktower lift
Knowing how much Johnny loves this game, I’ve been SO excited for this review. Haven’t been eagerly waiting this much since his Frontiers review. Luckily as a Patreon, I got to see this early. 😏
I had fun playing the RE4 remake; there was some ups and downs, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Glad I was there for the ride
@@Ihatevideogames334 Then why…why are you even here if this is a Capcom related video?
Devi May Cry marathon you say? Looking forward to it!
6:39 what's funny is that the backstory in this game is from that side game. (For anyone wondering what that game is, it's called "the darkside chronicles".)
We've been getting some pretty amount of great remastered or remake games this year. Metroid Prime, Kirby: Return to Dreamland, Advance Wars and now Resident Evil 4. Goes to show with how much effort & care you put into them, than not all remastered or remake games will end off with an bad note. Unlike what we've been getting for the past 6 or 7 years or recently like Tales of Symphonia or Sonic Colors.
You forgot dead space had a remake and it was fantastic.
@@tdenzel101 Never played that one. But thanks.
@@jaretco6423 you should give it a try since re4 inspired it.
@neckneck I'm not an Resident Evil guy sadly. I'm not really into pure horror games in general. Not my type.
my singular favourite thing about this remake is the fact that there's a weapon charm for the striker
its effect? increased movement speed.
god bless you, dittman
The fact that they replaced that Krauser QTE BS cutscene with an actual boss fight (in fact, they got rid of most QTEs outside of combat) makes this the superior game to me.
The Salazar statue was particular aggravating to me, because, when I played the Switch version, the QTEs glitched out and require me to mash the button twice as fast: I simply couldn't mash fast enough and was stuck in a dead game.
So it's not just me! I only found it to be aggravating on Professional difficulty; on Normal difficulty, I could mash just fine without much trouble.
It’s not a one-time glitch, it's a direct result of the 60 FPS option of the HD ports of RE4 which completely messes up certain game elements. You have to be twice as fast when mashing if you play on the PS4, Steam, Xbox and Switch versions of RE4.
Plus I seem to remember that QTEs are sped-up on professional even in the old versions of the game (GC, PS2, Wii etc.) so you have an unintended AND an intended disadvantage.
@@Ihatevideogames334 I bet you like Resident Evil 6
@@captinsparklezremix Or just hates everything
@@PhenomBuster13 It happened to me on NG+ on Normal.
I was hoping for a return to Final Fantasy next, but hearing that the next marathon is Devil May Cry has me just as excited.
Still waiting on a Spyro review.
I'm pretty sure RE3R was almost entirely made by a third-party studio, wasn't it?
Yeah it was outsourced to M-Two.
Re3 was good, just too short
I never knew you could stealth kill the pig guys, that's great!
Yeah Stealth killed enemies with a knife without wasting ammo for your guns. Work on normal enemies and pig guys that have tanking health but doesn't work on the Chainsaw enemies of a Stealth killed.
Ada’s separate ways is going to be so good! It’s going to evaluate the game being great even more I can’t wait for Ada mommy DLC!!
I got a Clement video AND a SomcallmeJohnny video on Resident Evil?! Yay!🥰🥰
johnny i thought you were wearing a prison jumpsuit for a second
The costumes in the original are visible in cutscenes in every version except for PS2. It did not have enough power for real-time cutscenes, so they have used FMVs instead.
Yes! Thanks Johnny! Been waiting for this Vs video:) I’ve already ran through this game 8 times and counting!
I’ve also unlocked everything for the Main Story and now I’m patiently awaiting the PSVR 2 Version to release!
Keep up the awesome work on these videos Johnny! 😎 (Sorry about the rambling, I got Super excited when I seen this video pop up on my feed)
I think the dodge mechanic should be brought and have it accessible when the knife is broken or unequipped.
18:15 regarding this moment
There’s a file you get before you get the dynamite that hints to stand back
I’m surprised that didn’t catch on here lol
I think in terms of the dodge mechanic, I think I prefer it not being in the game, as it's Jill's specific move in re3, whereas parrying is Leon's thing. It makes the different protagonists feel more distinct from each other
The only point i dont like is that the right hand dialouge was removed. That was my favorite line.
The round of happy slaps part cracked me up
I'm an old school RE player that loves the hell out of the new games, but I can say one of the difficult things adjusting to when playing a lot of one game then switching to the other is the changes in defensive options. I kept wanting to do Ethan's block and push when first playing RE4 Remake, and when playing RE8 in third person at first I really wanted to dodge.
They made a masterpiece into a masterpiece again. Wild.
A good way to spend my birthday. Thanks Johnny!
Happy birthday then.

Edit: anyone else think about how the acronym for the game spells RE4R?
When Ashley wears the armor costume you can... hear the metal fiddle around on her body. THAT WASN'T A NECESSARY DETAIL BUT THEY DID IT.
What's funny is I heard Jack Nicholson in Krausers voice as in young here's Johnny Jack Nicholson.
You hear that, Capcom. Release The Kumbaya Cut
A Devil May Cry Marathon? THIS PARTY'S GETTIN CRAZY!
I like that the Vegeta clip you used is from the rare Canadian dub of the Cell Saga.
I love the fact that I have both to go back to, however I feel like it's a shame that the people that only play the remakes, won't experience the over the top story and characters on the original RE4. Definitely 1 of the best things about the original game.
Considering that RE4 Classic is basically the Skyrim of RE games, I have no doubt that the people that will play the original will be significantly higher than those who go back to play RE1-3, so let's have hope in that it's more likely than we think.
@@thewrathofrevan5999 I would like to think that but RE4 still uses the tank controls which I doubt most players are comfortable with. And the graphics. I don't mind but as said, I doubt other would feel the same way. But let's hope I'm wrong on this one.
They assumed that hand cutting was too much and thought, "Alright, Floor it is."
Always a good day when there’s new Some call me Jim jams
Was talkin abt Resident Evil with a friend who just beat og RE4 for the first time and then i got this notification, cant wait to hear your thoughts on it!
I was not fully clicking with the combat in early parts of the village. I was a bit too use to the invincibility frames and stunning enemies much easier in the original. I also found that enemies tended to get unstunned faster than expected, the window to melee is not as long. But after getting use to those changes and getting a better handle on the Parry mechanic, it really clicked and I was enjoying the hell out of the game.
Can't wait till you are able to bring the Let's Plays again.
This is why I’m a fan of these reviews. He knows the things the remake gets right and doesn’t just outright bombard it with criticism because of nostalgia. Critics should honestly aspire to be SomeCallmeJohnny
Johnny doing a Dmc marathon with Lewis editing. I can only imagine how that's gonna go.
Yessss the Dodge mechanic!! you’re one of the only people I’ve seen mentioning it. They should’ve kept it in this remake! totally agree with you 💯
I’m very disappointed that Ashley is not in her brand new mouse form in the thumbnail. It just doesn’t feel right her not being a mouse now. 😂
Leon meeting Marvin in the flashback confirms that Leon's first run in RE2R is canon tho in 2nd run Birkin dies like Saddler in this.
If I can make a confession, I'm not really in love with the original Resi4 (although I did try it and get into the franchise because of your review, thanks again Johnny). Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but maybe since I didn't grow up with it, it doesn't quite jive with it. But this remake really did. Love the more tense atmosphere (god the Regenrators are somehow even more terrifying), LOVE the increased focus on Ashley and Luis, and still has the fun gameplay with enough new mechanics to spice things up.
2:06 Ashley: hi Leon!
Leon: how... how are you still alive?
Ashley: muffin button
10:25 This cutscene got me laughing quite a bit when I first went through this gem. Excellent review Johnny!
15:41 that’s literally all they had to say to sell the game.
Also super beyond hyped for you to play Devil May Cry, as it’s my favorite game series ever so I hope you enjoy it.
For the whole dodge thing, technically it's the crouch button, even outside the dodge prompts. Surprisingly, simply crouching can dodge a whole bunch of attacks in the game
After Crowbcat bullshit this is a refreshing view.
It's nice to see channels that are usually harsh on newer Resident Evil titles give praise where it's deserved. Even channels like Johnny and AvalancheReviews gave their approval when some people like crowbcat and criticalnobody go in looking for every little thing to trust and nitpick for views. Life must be miserable for people that don't let themselves just enjoy something.
@@kiwisoup avalanche take on what a truly resident evil game is fucking dumb though.
I’ve replayed this game so many times and platinumed both the PS4 & PS5 versions and never did I once think to bring Ashley into the 1st Salvador arena
I'm SO glad that I wasn't the only one that died the first time to the dynamite debris.
Honestly thought he'd go back to Kirby after this video
The next marathon is gonna get CRAZY! Let’s rock…!
"I bet you if Resident Evil 4 came out right now you'd have to buy the gun" Mark in your SGB playthrough.
Well, two of them, to be exact: the Skull Shaker and the Sentinel 9.
Glad to see you enjoyed it. I also beat the game twice in a row (I wanted to get the infinite rocket launcher the second go around) and mostly enjoyed the game. Is it better than the original, I don't know but I do agree with you on most of your points.
However I too was not happy with the ammo situation, in the original it's mostly good with giving you ammo, but the remake is way more stingy with ammo even on normal difficulty. I was definitely starving for ammo at various points and scouring for every treasure I could find.
Also screw the special weapons in this game because the requirements for getting them are ridiculous. The infinite rocket launcher I mentioned earlier costs $2 MILLION pesetas unlike the original and it took forever to gather enough money to buy it. Also the handcannon, Chicago Typewriter and infinite ammo unlocks are beyond insane like beating the game on Professional mode with an S+ rank. Forget that, I'd rather just download a mod to unlock the infinite weapons (I bought the game on PC).
Now I'm officially caught up on all the mainline RE games (except for the original PS1 games) and would love to see where the series goes from here.
OK, Aidi's gotta have her whip. After all if Leon is Batman Aida is gotta be Catwoman, which means she should get the grappling hook! I'm surprised he didn't throw an Ashley into the mix on the mercenary was mode!
The game doesnt tell you but the sunglasses have a hidden perk that minimizes the time you're stunned from flash grenades
Well, if Mortal Kombat does get age-restricted, good thing I would still be able to watch it
I'm amazed at the remake, though I do wonder what they'll do now.
Honestly though Code Veronica and Zero needed a remake more tbh
Funny to see the DMC marathon next after this game, I just know if Johnny did a DMC marathon before this game came out he would have been making Vergil jokes about Krauser here
I can't believe Johnny noticed the similarities between Krauser and Vegeta too xD that made me laugh
I was going to riot if you couldn’t sit on the throne and do the pose. Thankfully they kept it in.
22:43
With the benefit of hindsight now...boy was "all in due time..." some subtle as fuck foreshadowing for the SGB return.
If I remember correctly ada and wesker are in the files for mercs. Thay are just waiting for the dlc
Damn the past 3 months and beyond really is just the Capcom marathon, though honestly I’m not complaining at all
I'm hoping they'll remake RE1 in this style
Go back to making reviews plz
Man The Best Part in this Video is Johnny finally getting ready to marathon the Devil May Cry Series!!! I literally raised both arms in excitement like YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
RE4 is the reverse Predator set up. Horror movie turned action shooter.
Dude i was really missing the Dodge mechanic from Resident Evil 3 remake. For example when you going against the the pigheaded man and he tried to swing at you three times and then the fourth time you feel like you could Dodge back before he do the overhead but he always catch me. 😂
I'm with ya, I'd love to see Code Veronica or RE0 get remade. Those games really need the remake treatment. Though, I'd also love to see the spin-off "Outbreak" titles get the treatment as well. Since what those characters did is actually essential to the full story behind the fall of Umbrella.
2 things:
Nice call about Brian Drummond, and I always thought that Salazar looked like a little Gary Oldman's version of Dracula.
10:41 Is Ramon channelling Gilgamesh from the "Fate" franchise. 😅
I've never played RE before RE4R and I liked it quite a lot. I even played it side by side my friend who was playing RE4 OG at the same time, It was fun to compare cut scenes and such together
The best way to start the weekend, is with Johnny.
And while the remake is great and all, Resident Evil still just isn't in my interest, but I'm still happy to see fans and newcomers enjoy the games.
Very good remake, and I've actually been playing through the series for the first time even though I played re4 when it came out when I was a kid and this game is just so good ! Currently at re6. I have beat re7 before just not finished re6 even though I had that game in 2012.
Time for Bingo
As someone who played all the remakes but not the originals (with the exception of 4, I have no idea how to play 2 and 3 legally without shelling out hundreds of dollars) parrying felt so much more satisfying to do. Maybe I am personally more of a fan of the idea of completely canceling out an attack and it scores a better "I don't think so" than just getting out of the way.
Also maybe I missed something on RE3make but I don't know when the game ever tells you that you can dodge, I discovered that on accident during the second Nemesis fight.
IM EXCITED THAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT DEVIL MAY CRY
If Residents Evil 5 gets remade will we go full circle?
You are by far the best game reviewer of anyone else on RUclips professionally or otherwise. Your reviews are solid and make sense unlike most out there.
I can't wait for Johnny to cover all 5 of the DMC games. Y'know, 1,3,4,Re, and 5.
(But for real though, no one will blame you for skipping 2. Just like the Dark Souls series, 2 has been effectively disowned)
I think the knife parry is excellent. I didn't mind that the dodge from RE3R was gone. I doubt they'll do this, but maybe Capcom can give Ada the dodge mechanic for Separate Ways/Mercenaries for those that really like that mechanic. BTW Johnny, the trick w/ Luis in Mercenaries is that you can blow up his dynamite early by shooting it and he won't take damage from it. Also, he has a lot of invincibility frames for his melee attacks, so use that to your advantage.
I gotta grab my pants ive been waiting for this video
When this game came out, i got it as a gift and i decided to finally fully dive into the resident evil series. Id only played Revelations on my 3ds years ago funny enough but i really liked it. So i played the OG re4 and just finished re2. Im LOVING both. I think i’ll play 5 next, then 1,6,3, CV. The most random order i know lol. But then i’m gonna play the remakes 1-4. Then 7,8. An obsession has begun
I plan to get this but IMO 1, Zero, and Code Veronica all needed the remake much more then 4 did so I wish they had gone first.
I SWEAR to god, every review I watch for this game, I discover a feature that I missed/didn't realize. Like an auto sort button for example. LoL
In terms of the next game to get the remake treatment, I do agree that Code Veronica and RE0 need to be remade before 5, but as someone who can`t deal with the camera situation in RE1 and the remake, I think that it should be the next one to get remade to modern standards . In fact, I`d argue that they should`ve remade it before remaking RE4.
In all honesty, I`d be fine with it if they remade RE0 first, but I think that either they remake the games that start the timeline next, or their chance to do so will be gone once they delve into the later games, unless they decide to re-remake all the games all over again. It would also give more context some of the characters that appear in later games.
As for a RE5 remake, I have trouble imagining what it would look like, particularly in regards to the companion mechanic, and some of the bugger and bolder set pieces in the game...
It`s kind of a similar situation with RE6 (but so much worse), which would also need to get the same treatment, which I imagine would prove to be no less than a nightmare to figure out how to do, let alone do well.. My suggestion would be to focus on Leon`s story, and alter it and flesh it out to make it truly stand alone (like it should`ve been from day one). Chris and Jake`s stories could maybe either be condensed into DLC, or released as standalone/ spin-off games, though I`d say they`re largely unnecessary, and could be scrubbed altogether (though Chris` final boss is a terrifying design, and needs to be brought back in some way, either by being made to fit within Leon`s story somehow, or by making Chris` story it`s own game)
Yes, the DMC marathon begins next. Cant wait for it.
