On the topic of the Coconut Gun, I feel it’s worth mentioning that the lead designer for DK64, George Andreas, recounted a story about its creation; Miyamoto was shocked at seeing prototype gameplay with the placeholder model for the gun - which was a realistic double-barreled shotgun - and quickly drafted the final design for it. If he didn’t visit Rare HQ, we could’ve had DK blasting people with a realistic shotgun. What a world we’ve missed!
@@skibot9974 Nah. PS1 era was way more transitional than PS2, so anything could happen. Final Fantasy could take place in a big-ass 1940s-style city with a cyberpunk plot, Mario and Sonic could be voiced, and DK could pack heat. Shadow's game came post nu metal and emo wave, so it seemed like a really bad design choice to try to appeal to that market.

The rainbow coin you got at 29:37 was completely miss by most people until 2017. 100% speedrun records of the game had to be redone because nobody knew it was there.
Actually, that's a common misconception. Although the story about that specific rainbow coin being undiscovered by the community until 2017 is true, the idea that it affected 100% speedrun isn't, as (thankfully for speedrunner's sake), the Full Completion category for DK64's speedruns do not track Banana Coins, only Golden Bananas, Banana Medals, Banana Fairies, the Battle Crowns, the Keys and the Nintendo Coin and Rareware Coin. So they are allowed to select which Banana Coins they grab (As well as which bananas, since the Banana Medals only require 75% of any stage's bananas, and not 100%)
Johnny did an actual parody of the DK Rap... out of his bitter experience of completion. Yes, he had help from Victor McKnight, but even still. Beautiful.

An interesting fact about the game having an expansion pack is that the game was originally planned to release without needing one, but Rare had a game-breaking glitch with the game that the pack somehow fixed, running low on time they had no choice but to incorporate the pack & even decided to bundle it with the game, indeed costing them a pretty penny.
The swap anywhere mod kind of just illustrates how every kong is exactly the same tbh. It also invalidates a few specific elements like areas only accessible to one Kong and needing to find an alternate way in you open up later. A lot of areas are gated off by the *same* mechanic, like a simian slam pad or a gun panel, which are simply arbitrarily coded for a specific Kong rather than actually different mechanics like Tiny being able to reach platforms the furthest away.
I haven't laughed so hard in so long. Around the 35 minute mark where you have the footage of Tiny getting the banana fairy and you hear the enemy approaching and immediately hitting you man that takes me back. Of all the playthroughs I've ever done that happens every single time.
Another case of: watching John drink to fully complete Mario Sunshine when I was a kid to, watching him drink to fully complete DK64 now. Life really does come full circle in many ways lol
I have some memories with this one. When I was 5 in 2008, my dad had a save that was 101% complete. He never taught me to actually start the game, so when I went to select a file to play, I actually deleted his save. I’ve played it on and off for years but I don’t think I’ll ever reach that percentage.
I feel like Lewis' editing is becoming better and better with each video, I really admire your work as a duo u guys! And mad props to Victor for the bonkers rap Edit: Well looking at the credits this wad edited by Johnny himself actually.. well oopsie
Hey John, been a fan of the channel since 2011, just wanted to let you know that I’m super impressed with your growth as a creator over the years. You put a lot of time into your reviews and they always hit the right points while staying lighthearted. Much love, keep doing what you do.
Johnny you have NO idea on how much I was laughing from this whole video, it got to the point where my head was hurting from laughing a lot! That moment of you and your pals playing multiplayer, and THAT FUCKING JOHNNY RAP AT THE END, MY GOD DUDE, GET SOME REST MAN YOU EARNED IT!
I'm writting this as I'm watching the video but man, I've been waiting for years for this review to finally happen ; 8 of them to be exact. But it's here ; it's finally here! My favourite video game of all time reviewed by my favourite reviewer on RUclips ; it's a great feeling of hapiness inside. I'll know later during the video about Johnny's opinion about the game but regardless if it's a positive or a negative one, I'm still happy that it happened. Many thanks, Johnny!
I always appreciate a Hotel Mario joke. I actually never considered how redundant Tiny and Chunky are to Dixie and Kiddy until you brought it up. 20:27 All these years playing that game and I never noticed that till now lol. 29:58 And I do too and I love it. I actually never noticed how Rambi and Engarde were used so little either. Happy to hear the multiplayer offered such an amazing time. 45:17 Thanks for this.
Ending off this video with your DK rap is just fantastic. Also, I remember DK64 multiplayer being hella fun back in the day. And hiding in the invisible walls to catch my friends and cousins off guard. They caught me too tho lol
The timing on this coming out was perfect, since I'm currently recovering from an 8 hour session of playing Frontiers. From playing a collectathon to watching Johnny suffer through the mother of all collectathons, this should be fun
Fun fact: Early footage of the game showed DK and Diddy with actual real ass shotguns and pistols before they were changed to funny wooden guns that shoot fruit and peanuts. Just thought you should know.
Here's some info from the DK 64 manual about the three new kongs. Chunky is kiddie's older brother, Tiny is Dixie's younger sister, and Lanky is unknown in both origin and relationship to the other kongs. BTW, Cranky narrates the manuals for all three DKC games and DK64. He even mentioned that the DK in this game is a fully grown DK Junior, as opposed to his grandson from the country trilogy. This means that all three Donkey Kongs have been seen in two parts of their lives.
25:21 - A race should just be a race, adding a required collectable on top of that is just overstuffing the challenge with needless shit. Diddy Kong Racing's entire Silver Coin Challenge section would like a word with you!! XD
I think a big reason for all the collectibles was to promote their strategy guides. I remember having to use mine often to try and collect everything back when it first released
I can't help but imagine how hilariously insane an SGB Let's Play of this game would be if they had to switch players every time they change Kongs: DK = Johnny Diddy = Elliot Lanky = Mark/Uncle Greg Tiny = Sabrina Chunky = Matt
Imagine doing a 100% run as a child, spending weeks hunting down everything, and then finding out your game glitches during the last boss fight and can’t be completed. I’ve still never finished the game.
I love this game dearly. It is held together with copious amounts of duct tape, takes 7 levels to finally figure out how to structure itself, and used to literally be a porcupine simulator on older emulation. DK64 is a game I hold near and dear to my heart for being a huge part of my childhood, but it has an unbelievable number of problems, and despite how comprehensive your playthrough was, you only scratched the surface on that front. If you ever want to find out just how broken this game is, speedrunning will show you pretty well.
I was a young child when I played this game and speaking of glitches, I remember Chunky Kong glitched out and fell out of the cage and was just standing there on the ground. I got so excited that I freed him but couldn’t comprehend why he wasnt joining me and nothing seemed to change that. Either way, I figured out how to save him the next day and decades later, I still remember this. Lol
Remember how someone discovered a single hidden coin in this game that no one knew about and managed to _completely invalidate just about every 100% speedrun?_
According to another commenter, it was the rainbow coin at 29:37. I thought there were fucking around, but hearing that be corroborated by someone else just fucking kills me. How is something like that even possible hahaha
Been waiting for Johnny to review this one for a LONG while, it's everything I could've asked for! I usually cringe when other people try to make some weird musical tidbit of their own with their own lyrics, but this one at the end of the review was just so funny I can't hate it xD
Ah, yes, Donkey Kong 64, the original completionist's nightmare, and might be the reason why we haven't seen another 3D Donkey Kong outing since then. However, with 3D Platformers making quite the resurgence over the last few years, it might be time for the DK Crew to get back into action...just without having to collect so much stuff, hopefully.
Honestly, just cut down the playable characters to just three (DK, Diddy, and Dixie) and be able to swap characters on the fly, and it'll be a much smoother experience.
It's funny. DK64 was everything that I and my group of friends would have told you we wanted at the time in a collectaton. I remember us reading the descriptions given by Rare itself of how the game was going to play and being excited about things that would now horrify me. I remember looking on boards online about it and other people felt the same way. Keep that in mind if you wonder how this game even came to be the way it is.
You know, I've been subscribed to Johnny for....Literal years now, and it never really occurred to me that, he's still at 400k subs. ....it really puts it into perspective how truly insane a million subs is.
That DK rap at the end was fantastic. :D As someone who loves DK64, I agree with all of your criticism. But since I played it as a kid I lost all natural defense mechanisms against backtracking.
This is one of those games with the best love/hate relationship, I picked this game up from a friend of mine back in middle school, and it's one of my favorites of all time. It would be great to get a remake of this game that cuts out all the needless backtracking and fixes up the aiming controls, plus letting us collect things without color coding the collectibles to specific Kongs. I wonder how they would change up the DK Rap though?
Holy fuck that ending song tho I'm dying 🤣🤣🤣 Huge props for 100%'ing this monster Johnny, I still get PTSD just thinking about all the hours I put into it 20+ years ago XD

There a way I can install that shit on Mobile? I got an Android Phone.
@@TheAzureNightmare most likely you can patch it with an ips file or xdelta. Android apps can do that for you
@@TheAzureNightmare Yep, just played through it myself with a razer kishi.
Seeing Matt is like seeing an old friend, I miss him
Agreed
Well good news from the future! Lol sgb is back in full force~
Another case of: watching John drink to fully complete Mario Sunshine when I was a kid to, watching him drink to fully complete DK64 now. Life really does come full circle in many ways lol
Wow I can’t believe Johnny finished DK64, and had the time to record his own obituary since it took a lifetime probably! Appreciate the dedication fr
I have some memories with this one. When I was 5 in 2008, my dad had a save that was 101% complete. He never taught me to actually start the game, so when I went to select a file to play, I actually deleted his save. I’ve played it on and off for years but I don’t think I’ll ever reach that percentage.
Wait… and he let you live afterwards..?
Bravo, man.
@@ViltrumiteIsRite99 he has said since that day that if I ever get close to completing a game he will delete the save, and I can’t blame him
@@Unironic_Plant_Main So I imagine all of your games are sitting at 69%, for the memes but mainly, to keep dad away from your save files LOL
I feel like Lewis' editing is becoming better and better with each video, I really admire your work as a duo u guys! And mad props to Victor for the bonkers rap
Edit: Well looking at the credits this wad edited by Johnny himself actually.. well oopsie
My favorite fun fact about this game is DK and Diddy used actual guns in beta builds and Miyamoto saw that and got scared.
So that explains why Miyamoto immediately insisted before anything started that Mario Rabbids had no real guns
Hey John, been a fan of the channel since 2011, just wanted to let you know that I’m super impressed with your growth as a creator over the years. You put a lot of time into your reviews and they always hit the right points while staying lighthearted. Much love, keep doing what you do.
To this day, still one of my all-time favorite Donkey Kong games.
Glad to see I’m not the only one here
I loved the Multi Player 🤣 I remember opening this game on My Birthday 🎉 so many good memories.
Same here! I still revisit it from time to time.
P.S. OH, BANANA!
@@moroseloki1912 Yes I'm so glad he at least tried the multiplayer because it is genuinely amazing
I don't want to ruin the 64 likes
Johnny you have NO idea on how much I was laughing from this whole video, it got to the point where my head was hurting from laughing a lot! That moment of you and your pals playing multiplayer, and THAT FUCKING JOHNNY RAP AT THE END, MY GOD DUDE, GET SOME REST MAN YOU EARNED IT!
The hype was insane for this game, the magazine screenshots promised the most stunning visuals ever seen on a console and it delivered on that front.
Yes
No it didn't. Literally every dreamcast game at the time had better graphics
3:20 still can’t believe you haven’t covered banjo kazooie yet. Hopefully one day you’ll make a review.
This is one of those games I enjoy THINKING about playing more than actually playing it.
The fact that Diddy's collectables are a known aphrodisiac is something that I'm sure will only age like the finest wine.
XD
43:45 this bring your inner Ape 😮🐵🦧🦍
I think a big reason for all the collectibles was to promote their strategy guides. I remember having to use mine often to try and collect everything back when it first released
I can't help but imagine how hilariously insane an SGB Let's Play of this game would be if they had to switch players every time they change Kongs:
DK = Johnny
Diddy = Elliot
Lanky = Mark/Uncle Greg
Tiny = Sabrina
Chunky = Matt
Cranky = Uncle
that would have been great to see.
Ya gave Elliot the one with the janky jetpack controls. Because as we know, Elliot does spectacularly with vehicles in games.
@@DrSuperLuigiSeth1 Diddy Kong: Arson
@@darthyamideathbringer OH NO! I hear a hyena coming. He's saying four words on repeat. What are they?
BURN TO THE GROUND!
The DK rap at the end made me laugh so hard that it even made me even forget the symptoms of covid for a couple minutes.
You know what makes Tiny taking Dixie’s place hilarious? THEY ARE SISTERS.
Imagine doing a 100% run as a child, spending weeks hunting down everything, and then finding out your game glitches during the last boss fight and can’t be completed. I’ve still never finished the game.
That ending killed me with laughter, it was pure gold. Great review as always too.
One of his best. Definitely worth the wait
This is one of the best DK64 videos I have ever seen. Loved the rap. Laughed the whole way through.
21:32 The face you made alongside that classic *BOOM* sound effect just cracked me up!
My god, that DK rap.... I have no words - just wow!
It wasn’t improvised he wrote it???
I was a young child when I played this game and speaking of glitches, I remember Chunky Kong glitched out and fell out of the cage and was just standing there on the ground.
I got so excited that I freed him but couldn’t comprehend why he wasnt joining me and nothing seemed to change that.
Either way, I figured out how to save him the next day and decades later, I still remember this. Lol
That ending was pure perfection.
6:27-6:43 That sequence reminds me of the Homer Cubed segment in Treehouse of Horror VI.
The end of this video makes this playthrough absolutely worth it lol
Videos like these are why you are my unchallenged king of RUclipsrs, Johnny.
48 minutes? Well, I can’t complain with more Johnny content.
Props to Johnny for going nearly 50 minutes talking about DK64 without once making a "Chunky's dead" joke
I wonder what will happen if Johnny didn't drink any Dr. Pepper before playing this game.
This game is a nightmare to 100% but man it's so fun
I just recently played through this game again. It will always be one of my favorites. Thanks for letting us watch you play it!
45:46 Close, we were looking for: "Can go to Hell"
But thanks for playing; and rapping.
😄😄
Thank you Johnny for providing the full kongtext for this game. Much appreciated. This certainly isn't a game to monkey around with its collectables.
That DK rap at the end was fantastic. :D
As someone who loves DK64, I agree with all of your criticism. But since I played it as a kid I lost all natural defense mechanisms against backtracking.
I like that Trav appears twice in the No part, once just casually without his shirt xD
This was one hell of a funny episode. The pain, the agony, the anguish... man this was fun. Excellent work Johnny.
I loved the DK rap at the end. Really puts a ribbon on this whole thing huh?
This is one of those games with the best love/hate relationship, I picked this game up from a friend of mine back in middle school, and it's one of my favorites of all time. It would be great to get a remake of this game that cuts out all the needless backtracking and fixes up the aiming controls, plus letting us collect things without color coding the collectibles to specific Kongs. I wonder how they would change up the DK Rap though?
Don't change the rap it's perfection.
What I was expecting: One or two jokes about the DK Rap.
What I was NOT expecting: That.
10:03 Well there is the Donkey Kong DLC in Mario + Rabbids if that counts
Holy fuck that ending song tho I'm dying 🤣🤣🤣
Huge props for 100%'ing this monster Johnny, I still get PTSD just thinking about all the hours I put into it 20+ years ago XD
The dk rap is super hilarious, had me laughing like a maniac
If someone every makes a game like this again, I hope they learn about the Tag Barrel and makes that thing portable for switching.
Btw, this game STILL holds the Guiness World Record for most collectibles in a video game. Just tells you how loaded it is.
16:21 oh.. I think I just got it... She gives you extra health.. health is melons.. she gives you extra melons cause Candy is fuckin STACKED.
Which one's worse to fully complete, this or Crash Bandicoot 4 It's About Time? 5:16 Gotta put the Dr. Pepper away 16:14, 27:19 and 45:17 gold, absolute gold
