It wasn't any worse at bass than it was with its ear-screeching treble, so I can't see that being the reason. I'm guessing there were complications with the rights to the music, seeing as David Wise composed the first two games and Eveline Fischer composed the third.

    Funny enough, DKL2 actually is a sequel to DKC2 like DKL is for DKC. Donkey Kong gets apenapped again and the island that sinks at the end of DKC2 actually rises back up from the depths of the sea, which explains why certain areas are combined and why certain levels were cut. However, this was only in the instruction booklet (similarly to how DKL1's story was only in the instruction booklet).

    So the reason David Wise had to replace Eveline Fischer's original score for DKC3 for the Advance port was because her original score contained so many low bass notes that it would cause the GBA's speakers to literally catch on fire.
    If David Wise had had more time, he probably could have found a workaround for this, but he was on a tight deadline, so he composed an entire new soundtrack in less than six weeks. He said that he felt horrible about doing it because he really wanted to do right by Eveline's score, but it unfortunately couldn't be done with the tight deadline approaching.

    DKC3 GBA has a new soundtrack because of hardware limitations, but not the kind you'd expect! The original game has a very deep and bassy quality thanks to Novakovic's (nee Fischer) fascination with low ambient drones. When Wise was converting the tracks to the GBA, he found that the speakers on the GBA could not produce the low sounds the original soundtrack had, and left the music altogether very much lacking a backbone. You can hear this a lot on the soundtracks to DKC1 and DKC2 on GBA as well: Fischer's compositions in "Life in the Mines", "Misty Menace" and "Cave Dweller Concerto" take pretty big hits in the conversion. So, instead of fussing about with the conversion with a deadline breathing down his neck, Wise decided to just compose a new soundtrack, which took three weeks supposedly.

Plus while the level styles are the same for the most part, all the levels are brand new. Also the pun names on all the DKL3 levels are very Rare-esque - they did love a good pun!
    The race is also why the Super Game Boy border for DKL3 is clocks as it's all about a race against time to see if you beat K Rool to the lost world.

    Story regarding my copy of Donkey Kong Land that spans 20 years:
    I loved Donkey Kong Country but did not have an SNES in 1994, I was merely a Game Boy... boy. Imagine my joy when DK Land came out. I loved this game, because it was the closest thing I had to the real thing at home. But trouble was brewing: the save system is so bizarre on DKL that I never made it very far, and eventually it stopped saving at all. Initially I thought maybe I was doing something wrong, but after pouring over the manual I couldn't get the game to save my progress. I concluded my game was likely broken, but when I was young didn't know how to get it fixed or returned. I could hear a spring/rattling sound in the cartridge, but I think I just gave up and moved onto DKL 2 when that was released.
    In 2017 with an engineering degree in hand, confidence with a soldering iron, and a strong case of nostalgia coming over me, I unearthed my old collection from my folks house. I opened up my copy of DKL, and sure enough, the battery terminal had come loose (probably back in 1995) and the game wouldn't save progress because of it. It was an easy fix that I was able able to perform some 20 odd years later.
    Still haven't worked up the tenacity to finish the game, for all the reasons Johnny points out in the video, but I would say the inspiration is there.

    With the runaway success of the Game Boy, it was no surprise that there would be Donkey Kong games for it, with Donkey Kong Land being almost like the original, but Rare threw some curveballs to subvert expectations. For the latter two Donkey Kong Land games, however, it made sense to be simple conversions of Country 2 and 3, given the amount of games Rare would go on to release on the Nintendo 64.
    And it wouldn't be just the GBA ports of Donkey Kong Country that Rare got to work on, they made a few other GBA games as well, as well as a game (or two) on the Nintendo DS, but I'm sure those will have their spotlight in due time.

    Probably played the DKC GBA ports a bit more than the originals back in the day, owned the first 2 and emulated the third. Learned to 100% them all (as they differ a bit from have SNES originals) via a special web guide of the official Spanish Nintendo website of all places, which has surprisingly stayed up for many years. There was someone who did a color restoration of the first port and it looks great, hoping to see the other 2 games converted too. Also waiting for restored covers of the new soundtrack of DKC3 too. Edit: Johnny should also look up SMB Deluxe and the Super Mario Advance series someday, the YI and SMB3 ports even have new levels to boot

    Yeah, I agree that the first DK Land is rough around the edges, but man I played it so much that all of that just kinda became invisible. You beat a game a dozen times and the annoyances kinda become funny little quirks that enhance the experience. Except those platforms you have to jump on to change direction in the cloud levels. Those must've not bugged you very much.

    My first video game I ever played was the GB Color port of DKC1. I was on a camping trip and my dad snuck the GBC with us much to my moms dismay. It was a boring day around the campsite and he let me try it and I fell absolutely in love. Following that, when we got home he finally showed me and let me try Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine on his N64, GC, and that christmas we got a Wii and I found my favorite game of all time; Mario Galaxy. And while Mario will always be my favorite, like Mario, I owe the start of my gaming career to DK ;)

    GBA DKC3's OST is so cool and funny to essentially have another Sonic CD OST situation since there's alot to pick and choose of which is preferable. On the Land games: while DKL 3 came out on the GBC in Japan exclusively, luckily there is a hack out there that translates that GBC game back into English. Additionally, both DKL 1 and 2 have EXTREMELY good colorization hacks, which make the games infinitely more playable and prettier to look at, while also adding extra stuff like Time Attack modes and other additions. I highly recommend you guys check them out!!!

    I really like the DK Land series, I think they are some of the best platformers on the GB/GBC, it is a shame that you didn't play DKL1 on GBC from the get go, since that solves the issue of visibility, really the biggest problem is the wonky physics.
    Honestly in some regards it can be considered even better than the original DKC, it has more and more interesting level themes, more sensible collectibles and secrets, so it is actually possible and fun to go for 100% without a guide or blindly jumping on pits. I would love to see an SNES romhack remake of that game

    • @JASpiring
      @JASpiring Год назад

      Agreed. I'm surprised nobody's done that yet. Maybe Donkey Kong Country is just a lot harder to hack than Super Mario World?

    • @bldem4ster103
      @bldem4ster103 Год назад

      @@JASpiring The thing with Super Mario World is that programmers have gotten to the point where they can completely change the coding of the game to create an entirely different experience. Like for instance, the Kaizo "series" (not just specifically Kaizo World 1,2, or 3), we've seen how programmers can change the behavior of a boss or an enemy to be different than how they are in the original game (like for instance the Big Boo boss being able to physically hurt the player), or changing the physics and coding of anything that can be interacted with. It also doesn't help that Mario World is a much more simpler game compare to the Country Trilogy (and also surprisingly easy to break kind of game)
      Now with the Country games, I'm not entirely certain for why there aren't many romhacks, or at least ones with greater attention, being talked about. I imagine it's very similar to the development process for the Country games; like what Johnny said, it was a very difficult process to make such games be able to run on the SNES. It wouldn't surprise me if many romhackers are not as familiar to the programming of the Country series. Again, I'm not certain about the reason, but I imagine these could be a few reasons for it.
