    One thing that makes RC1 stand out compared to the later entries is the more "grungy" aesthetic overall. Things like the HUD having a CRT look, the weapons looking very strung together with bolts and screws (that is to say, they don't look very over the top). It's a unique look that didn't really carry over in the future.

    • @MajaEmilieWinkler
      @MajaEmilieWinkler 2 года назад +52

    • @TerrorOfTalos
      @TerrorOfTalos 2 года назад +44

      Well the shift in weapon design does make sense. In GC megacorp was more advanced than gadgetron at the time (just look at planet Barlow) and it's the reason why they moved to a another galaxy where there wasn't any competition.
      Then in UYA/3 gadgetron eventually improved their own tech so weapons became much more advanced compared to RaC 1.

      Honestly I'm kind of glad they went more ridiculous in later installments instead of keeping with this grungy look. I love me some used sci-fi but it just blends so much better with the game's already goofy tone to have the weapons match.

    "The alien snappers and crabs" Ah yes; those guys are the toughest non-vehicle regular enemies. Most enemies take 1~3 wrench hits [with Hyper-Strikes counting as 2]. The snappers take 4. The crabs take 5. And both retaliate when hit too. Even the endgame enemies have 3HP. And the former are in what is basically level and not even the 1/3 mark while the crabs are before the 2/3 mark.
    Also; the paywalls are part of the game's theme, which is satirsation of corporate/capitalist culture. There's a reason why the "hero" is a sellout and the main villain is capitalism extreme.

      Agreed with the enemy health the scaling is well done to just an annoyance/pull hair out levels even when from a distance/going with crowd control weapons sometimes and the 'ignore the wrench' strategy with it being for boxes to save ammo.
      Besides being a leftover of Moneybags from Spyro having gem paywalls but yes it fits the theme well. I am glad they removed them but 2&3 made them not as bad as 1 so eh they aren't as missed even besides the theming.

      Ratchet & Clank becoming only the third console platformer franchise (Mario, Sonic, Ratchet & Clank) to actually sustain itself across three or more consecutive console generations? No one would have thought that in the PS2 days. Crash DIED across his next two generations of output. Spyro went on ice after his second generation of output. Jak was a one generation and done (because Naughty Dog had a habit of that). Sly died after his second generation. Blinx couldn't even last past a single console. And that's also forgetting all the flop or bomb platformers that only got one instalment on the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation.

    Just a heads up for anyone looking to get into this series: while the HD Collection is the best way to get the first three games legally it has a few glitches not present in the original PS2 games. None of it is game breaking, and if you have no nostalgia for the originals you may not notice some of them, but it is there. Personally I'd recommend either following Johnny's example and playing them on an actual PS2 or barring that an emulator. Also don't bother playing the HD port of Ratchet: Deadlock. the first Ratchet & Clank is a game I changed my mind on the most. I didn't grow up with these games, and only got into them a few years ago; I started with the furure series, and after finishing that I went back to the PS2 games. I absolutely hated it. It felt clunky, unfair, and my first impression was that in terms of gameplay R&C 1 was way worse than any of the future games. Here is the thing though: Now, a few years later and having replayed 1, it's actually one of my favorites.
    You cannot play R&C 1 like the future games. If you try to play it the same way, as a simple run & gun shooter, you will get absolutely demolished. R&C 1 is more like an adventure/platforming game with shooting elements. Its easy to run out of ammo and bolts in this game, you do have to use melee a lot of times, and the enemies constantly pose a threat. If you run into rooms guns blazing, you will die immediately.
    The absence of a strafe button is what drove me mad at first, cause I played the future series first... but here is the thing, I actually think that that is one of the games biggest features. Introducing strafing made this series way easier, and it also made a lot of the weapons feel... exactly the same. Why? Because almost all weapons in future games let you strafe left & right while jumping up and down to avoid damage while effectively fighting the enemies. Basically, you hold down the shoot button while strafing and you win. I am exaggerating a bit, but anybody who has played R&C 1 and then the future games knows what im talking about. If you tackle R&C 1 the right way, it is actually really fun to play. Strategize, don't run in guns blazing, save the right ammo for the right situation, and so on. The combat ends up being really fun and challenging if you don't expect it to be exactly like the sequels.
    Besides the gameplay I will just say that R&C 1 has BY FAR the best OST of the entire series, it gets you freaking PUMPED (only R&C 2 comes close), the banter and back and forth between Ratchet & Clank is entertaining as hell, and the story is a rather on the nose critique of capitalism, but done well. Visually, for a PS2 game, and the first entry into this series, it looks stunning, and the level design is great. There are many planets, branching paths, and quite a lot of variety. I really don't have much complaints about this game, it comes rather close to being perfect.
    Tl;dr: This game is a classic, dont let the absence of strafing discourage you and give it a fair chance.

    Ah man. This has me hyped. My dad bought us a PS2 back in 2002 for Christmas and it came with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Jak & Daxter and this. Ratchet and Clank was by far the game I played the most. Recently replayed it and the game has held up great. It suffers from some early installment weirdness, but pretty much every single gripe will get fixed with later games in the series. Never knew Insomniac and Naughty Dog shared a building. Makes so much sense with how much these games share.
    When you beat the game and decide to restart it in challenge mode the game doubles your bolt income. The RYNO was originally intended to be a game breaker that you got after your first play through. 7 year old me grinded bolts for it though. Took forever, but it was hilarious when it wiped out the screen like nobody's business. Also got stuck on Blackwater city's water section (the path to get to Qwark's trailer). That was my water temple. Caused a dislike of water levels that lasts to this day.

    One of the things I’ve learned to love about this game is how it attacks the Hero’s First Journey story.
    Instead of adventure and wonderment, you’re met with greedy and manipulative people who wring you for cash and force you to do their dirty work. The hero you’ve spent the first half of the game idolizing ends up being like everyone else. Ratchet quickly understands this and just journeys for his own selfish enjoyment and desires. While Clank, the robot has that naive desire to do good.

    Ironically, I played the heck out of the Spyro trilogy (except for Year Of The Dragon), and skipped over the Ratchet & Clank games, mostly because we didn't get a PlayStation 2 until roughly around mid-late 2005, and even then, we just skipped over it. I did eventually got to try a Ratchet & Clank game since one of my cousins had a copy of the third game, and, while it was fun, I had absolutely no idea where to go back then.
    But now, years later, I have complete experience of the original PlayStation 2 trilogy (I've yet to play Deadlocked), and the first Ratchet & Clank, while rough around the edges, is still a good time, while also showcasing just what the PlayStation 2 was capable of, and it only got better from there.

    My first exposure on the series was a demo version of the first game and I was hooked in the series, I thought Ratchet & Clank was a great game, held back by the personalisation of some of the characters and the gameplay being a little too run of the mill despite the more creative gameplay, but it was a great start to the series like with Crash Bandicoot.
    Also Johnny, you're not alone with your opinion on Ratchet's arrogant hotheaded personality, I felt Ratchet had been improved in the sequels and at least he cares about the wellbeing of the galaxies that he and Clank are tasked to save. As for Qwark, he acts like a manchild so bad and he doesn't do his job properly at being a superhero.

They also talk a bit about their relationship with Naughty Dog. The discussion that left the greatest impression on me was when they talked about the company's "90 degree turn" rule (discussed during 2) and "genre switching" rule (discussed during 3), which I really appreciated once I started noticing them in other games.

    The pay walls are a fascinating case for Ratchet and Clank. Like these are clearly a carryover from Spyro 2 and 3 but unlike those games which were just kinda arbitrary and there to pad out the game lengths rather than something logical to the games world (even if we do love to hate moneybags) Ratchet and Clank uses these paywalls as part of the overall narrative/world building and reinforce just how capitalistically driven a lot of the galaxy and it’s inhabitants are that they can’t even help out the hero Schmucks (us) without getting something in return. People gotta get paid, nothing is cheap and charity is none-existent and that attitude goes to the duo with Ratchet being more savvy and suspicious of the cynical nature of the world vs Clank being more naïve and idealistic.
    I’m not going to go and say Ratchet and clanks commentary is some of the greatest shit out in gaming like it’s Papers Please or the original Fallout games but it’s honestly still a very witty and thoughtfully written game underneath the chaos and carnage that is the gameplay itself. It certainly pisses on whatever the fuck the 2016 movie was trying to pull.

    Ratchet having the personality in this game feels like a deliberate choice. They wanted to distance themselves from their bright and cutesy spyro image and did so by creating the antithesis of that image in the form of a character. A selfish, condescending dick that only gets serious when he has something to lose. It definitely makes Ratchet memorable, way more than later depictions where he ends up as a generic wide eyed hero type.

      I feel the exact same actually. Old Ratchet feels more like someone you’d run into on the street compared to yet another happy go lucky protag. I didn’t mind the aggression as much considering fact that Ratchet’s a young teen with all this stress put on to him.

    18:00 did Johnny really say "Suck cannon" without using the "SUCK!!!" bit from Spaceballs?
