No matter how "cheesy" or "corny" OG Leon's dialogue got, Paul Mercier delivered those lines with so much conviction and confidence, they're widely beloved and considered iconic to this day.

I somehow got a feeling that Capcom is trying to tone down the "male fantasy" much, OG Leon was a real badass, he doesn't talk much and had a real sarcastic tone to the enemies, they even got to the point of changing the story, for example is in the og, Leon immediately went for the first to the plaga removal chair, while in the remake they made it that he and Ashley are already in a critical state so Ashley had to be first anyway in the dangerous procedure
In the original's files it's said the whole operation was done in a rush since they couldn't trust many agents after Ashley was kidnapped cause it was clear someone who had access to confidential informations was involved (Krauser), that's why Leon was sent in a solo mission in Spain to find informations about Ashley's whereabouts, so it actually made sense that they didn't even have codenames and everything, Leon was sent in europe as soon as the intel got informations about the sighting of a girl who looked like Ashley in a rural area of spain.
My favorite part about OG Leon is the first time he meets Saddler, he starts talking to him like he's been his arch nemesis for years. He's so perfect in that role, he turns the whole game into something magical.
OG's a Gigachad. I loved when he would taunt him about the "Senior Moment." situation that Salazar was having while having a laugh at all of the enemies failures and weirdness the entire game.
What I like about the original "I got gum" line from the original is that it was a subtle call back as well as some character growth from original resident evil 2 where leon started with the lighter in his inventory. The reason he had it (according to the manual) is that he's a smoker. Gum is sometimes used as a substitute for cigarettes for smokers trying to kick the habit. So him only having gum was a subtle way of informing the player that leon stopped smoking as well as being a fun and cheesy line.
giving that context - in the remake he says ''y'know those things are gonna kill ya'' giving a simpathy air from luis since leon used to smoke too, giving a brother advice of some sort and at the end, when luis is dying, leon lights his cigarrete in respect for luis - and since he is already dying
No. DMC1 was created from a discarded beta version of RE4, after the developers discovered a glitch that allowed Leon to hover in midair while shooting.

That being said I'm pretty sure they just shared a model, "Tony Redgrave", is who the NotE4 protag was going to be, not Leon. Though they considering how he turned out, I'm sure Leon took quite a bit from him personality wise and not just his model.
In the original RE2, Leon was much more driven to help people compared to remake, where he approaches everyone with a gun and acts entitled. Re4 Leon is still just as straightforward as remake's isnt.

It would have really benefitted the game to have them communicate with Leon, especially Saddler since he wasn't in the game as much as OG. Back in the day I loved the "senior moment perhaps" part a lot and the Salazar talks. It made these villains more intimidating but gave them personality as they took over Leon's coms and gave no more since Hunnigan was our go to coms when things were going chaotic. I do like Luis and Ada's coms talks but we didn't need much compared to villains who have less screen time. In the og I wanted so badly to beat that little shit Salazar in the og because he was always taunting Leon, being one step ahead due to Saddler's plans and once you get to those points you get gratification knowing you finally beat that nuisance that taunted you all through the castle. Plus it would have helped lore wise with some of them telling Leon why they are such a threat, having Salazar briefly explain his family lineage or Saddler speaking of his family or motivations and why in his views he is right as the best villains always imagine themselves as the heroes. Wesker said it best: "I'm not destroying the world, I am curing it".

Well, if you were saddled with the shrieky baggage that was OG Ashley, you'd think you were too cool for her, too. Remake Leon is trying to maintain an older-brother frame, because (1) that's more calming to a frightened girl, and (2) making her feel capable makes her less afraid and less baggage-y.

I really miss Ada's flirtism with Leon in the OG. You can tell that despite her allegiances, she doesn't want Leon to die. Even that "put your hands where I can see them" part looked more like a dance than an actual fight.
@@billybro1403 Way superior. IN the REMAKE, they scrapped a lot of cutscenes and kept the game running, like when the wolf shows up again. Modern gamers think that's good, and immerses them more. But personally I like that the pace of the original RE4 gets broken up by little cutscenes. They also had way better facial animation, and the aesthetic of the game was better. Triple A gaming with photo realistic graphics makes everything look the same, it doesn't spark your imagination, and that - Is why most modern games kind of stink a little. The Remake is fine though, it looks like it plays fun. It's just too bad the Original still plays better lol

And you will understand why leon is like that in re4.

I understand if you prefer the original version and to it's credit it's absolutely hilarious and fun for it's own reasons. I'd say the new voice actors and actresses are all good, except Ada. The original games voice actors and actresses did it very well. They really went in with the cheesiness.
@@LostCosta I don't like any of them. Even Ashley feels...Off. Ashley in the OG felt like a 20 year old college student. She was annoying and out of water in this scenario and it felt appropriate. Ashley in the remake feels like a 35 year old woman writing a 35 year old woman, and such as rescuing her feels not nearly as good. She doesn't feel as helpless and it doesn't really match the game's tone.
I might be biased, but I definitely love Leon from the original RE4. He just has the perfect cheesy lines It's the perfect cheesy transition to RE5 where Chris punching a big boulder, just because he can xD
I do like og leon, but I think they were trying to keep a consistent tone throughout the remake so some of the og lines might have broken that up a bit.

I adore the remake. That said, the OG Leon's character design and voice acting are just... timeless. He has a cold, indifferent air about him that feels totally badass.

There’s something about Paul Mercer’s cadence as Leon. When he quips, he has this patronizing tone. Lines like “your right hand comes off?” are said in a sarcastic, yet almost serious tone, as if he’s making himself out to be stupid, yet he’s just mocking them by giving them a response they aren’t used to. It isn’t fear, anger, but a comical retort.
The OG interactions between Leon and Salazar were some of the best from original. Bro had Salazar getting more and more pissed off at his refusal to die 😂

It actually makes more sense this way, tbh. Leon grumbling about smoking being bad for you early on gets recontextualized when Leon lights Luis's cig for him. Just that tacit acknowledgment that Luis is dying, and that he's earned Leon's respect. It wouldn't hit the same with "got gum" being the prelude to it.

People finally realizing part of the comparison Crowbcat made. It was not about which one is better, but which one is more rich on personality. Leon is part of the strong equation of the OG's soul.
This new Leon is great because it feels like a natural progression from what he was like in RE2. But OG RE4 Leon is great as this separate interpretation from what OG fans got from him in the original 2. He feels more like an action hero, or a comic protagonist. He's cool, skilled at what he does, and blatantly doesn't care about anything in the plot. He's the perfect personality for the original game.

Part of why I loved the original was the anime-esque, over the top absurdity of everything. The choreography looked straight out of an 80's Japan action movie. All while somehow maintaining the terrifying aura of the world as a whole. Blood and death and corpses surrounding our protagonist at all times, but Leon acting like it's another day on the job. The man is truly fearless at this point. I see what they were going for in the remake, but the hyper realism doesn't translate very well to what the 2005 version was going for. Narratively, and setting-wise. I missed seeing Leon doing double backflip pirouettes into a knife attack from the third floor of a building... And how he would hit on every woman in the game (except for Ashley lmao)
@cuttrogue ironically, the remake was heavily censored. It's missing a bunch of stuff that made the atmosphere of the original so terrifying. The crucified, disembowled corpses, mutilated animals, mass graves... ALL GONE If they were going for a more realistic, grounded approach, that was the ONE thing they should have gotten right. I mean it's a Resident Evil game for Christ's sake

Old is super fkn gold composing, ambiant sounds, lines of dialogue and voice acting in the original was LEGENDARY also the enemies spanish accent was perfect and thier creepy dialogues has been etched in our memories (... 2005 i'll never forget it)
It sucks that they removed some of the old lines but nice that they referenced them as challenge names like “doing some overtime” and “your small time” challenge.
To be honest, they sound more like an afterthought with the single purpose to reference the OG randomly for NoStAlGiA, since some of them look out of place, given the change of tone.

I kinda like the new darker tone of the Remake, but cutting content and changing Leon's one liners were not very welcoming to me. Still a fantastic game, tho.

I like both of them. 2000s Leon is great because of the nostalgia and closing the era of old style RE/Capcom. 2020s Leon is great for grounded and realistic character development thanks to the era of RE7/8/2make/4make.

The most emotional Leon got in the entire remake was holding Ashley's hand when they were removing las plagas from her. The rest of the game he has the same face dropping worse one liners than in the og, this remake is like if I remade DMC3 but Dante was all sad and serious the whole game because his mom is dead. If remake Leon was what we got on 2004 he wouldn't be even half as loved as he is. Without mentioning how both Ramon and saddler are way more bland here unlike in the OG where every time Leon fucks with them is comedy gold. In general the remake just feels less alive than the og, more generic and forgettable I'll admit the death of Luis was better in the remake though, the voice actor nailed it, but the removal of the "I got gum" line is very sad because it's a really funny and smart way to show Leon quit smoking instead of "those things can kill you"
the remake isnt bad but there are still things I liked in the og, like the 1st meeting scene with Ada, I really liked how Leon pulled a really fast reversal. Also I like the og dress for Ada better. For me though the best part in the remake is how Leon shoots Salazar to shut him up from his monologue
People who miss Ada's cocktail sheath have never tried to do anything while wearing one. Seriously, that was easily the most unrealistic part of the OG. (inb4 someone comes along to snowflake about how she regularly does Olympics-level gymnastics in a tight corset, stilettos, and hoop earrings because lol what's medical science)

I respect the new guy for that video where he talks highly of his appreciation for the original and I think he even met him and was inspired to become a voice actor from him. He even said he wanted more cheesy lines so I think he is a cool guy, I have more issues with the writers than the voice actor.

I really liked the original's first face off with ada because Leon's knife really was a better weapon for the situation since ada tried doing some crazy shit to recover control of her pistol. In the remake she basically has no reason not to just step back and shoot Leon in the face after he charges or while he's redirecting her barrel ACROSS his body
@@darius-og I've always said this. If there is any one person she has any loyalty to despite her nature, it's Leon. And it's simply because he's one of the straight up nicest characters in the series who took the 'protect and serve' part of being a cop seriously.

He basically could have been a new character who never went through trauma and it would still work. They acknowledge in the new one that Leon is trying to deal with it and still makes quips and cracks jokes, it's just not his main personality trait like in the original.
I like that in the remake, Leon sticks to codenames. However, I do find he's got a lot less confidence and bravado than in the original, which is a shame because I thought Leon's cheesy lines were a big part of the fun.

No matter how "cheesy" or "corny" OG Leon's dialogue got, Paul Mercier delivered those lines with so much conviction and confidence, they're widely beloved and considered iconic to this day.

I somehow got a feeling that Capcom is trying to tone down the "male fantasy" much, OG Leon was a real badass, he doesn't talk much and had a real sarcastic tone to the enemies, they even got to the point of changing the story, for example is in the og, Leon immediately went for the first to the plaga removal chair, while in the remake they made it that he and Ashley are already in a critical state so Ashley had to be first anyway in the dangerous procedure

In the original's files it's said the whole operation was done in a rush since they couldn't trust many agents after Ashley was kidnapped cause it was clear someone who had access to confidential informations was involved (Krauser), that's why Leon was sent in a solo mission in Spain to find informations about Ashley's whereabouts, so it actually made sense that they didn't even have codenames and everything, Leon was sent in europe as soon as the intel got informations about the sighting of a girl who looked like Ashley in a rural area of spain.
My favorite part about OG Leon is the first time he meets Saddler, he starts talking to him like he's been his arch nemesis for years. He's so perfect in that role, he turns the whole game into something magical.
OG's a Gigachad. I loved when he would taunt him about the "Senior Moment." situation that Salazar was having while having a laugh at all of the enemies failures and weirdness the entire game.
What I like about the original "I got gum" line from the original is that it was a subtle call back as well as some character growth from original resident evil 2 where leon started with the lighter in his inventory. The reason he had it (according to the manual) is that he's a smoker. Gum is sometimes used as a substitute for cigarettes for smokers trying to kick the habit. So him only having gum was a subtle way of informing the player that leon stopped smoking as well as being a fun and cheesy line.
giving that context - in the remake he says ''y'know those things are gonna kill ya'' giving a simpathy air from luis since leon used to smoke too, giving a brother advice of some sort
and at the end, when luis is dying, leon lights his cigarrete in respect for luis - and since he is already dying

Genuinely devastated they took out the villains hacking into Leon's communicator
Ikr, just when the game looked like it gone as far as it could, they opened up a whole new world of entertainment.
It would have really benefitted the game to have them communicate with Leon, especially Saddler since he wasn't in the game as much as OG.
Back in the day I loved the "senior moment perhaps" part a lot and the Salazar talks.
It made these villains more intimidating but gave them personality as they took over Leon's coms and gave no more since Hunnigan was our go to coms when things were going chaotic.
I do like Luis and Ada's coms talks but we didn't need much compared to villains who have less screen time. In the og I wanted so badly to beat that little shit Salazar in the og because he was always taunting Leon, being one step ahead due to Saddler's plans and once you get to those points you get gratification knowing you finally beat that nuisance that taunted you all through the castle.
Plus it would have helped lore wise with some of them telling Leon why they are such a threat, having Salazar briefly explain his family lineage or Saddler speaking of his family or motivations and why in his views he is right as the best villains always imagine themselves as the heroes. Wesker said it best: "I'm not destroying the world, I am curing it".

IN the REMAKE, they scrapped a lot of cutscenes and kept the game running, like when the wolf shows up again.
Modern gamers think that's good, and immerses them more.
But personally I like that the pace of the original RE4 gets broken up by little cutscenes.
They also had way better facial animation, and the aesthetic of the game was better. Triple A gaming with photo realistic graphics makes everything look the same, it doesn't spark your imagination, and that - Is why most modern games kind of stink a little. The Remake is fine though, it looks like it plays fun.

And you will understand why leon is like that in re4.

The voice actors of the remakes sure made a fantastic job, but Capcom's 2000 game's voice acting is just LEGENDARY.
I'd say the new voice actors and actresses are all good, except Ada. The original games voice actors and actresses did it very well. They really went in with the cheesiness.

@@LostCosta I don't like any of them. Even Ashley feels...Off. Ashley in the OG felt like a 20 year old college student. She was annoying and out of water in this scenario and it felt appropriate. Ashley in the remake feels like a 35 year old woman writing a 35 year old woman, and such as rescuing her feels not nearly as good. She doesn't feel as helpless and it doesn't really match the game's tone.
I might be biased, but I definitely love Leon from the original RE4. He just has the perfect cheesy lines

It actually makes more sense this way, tbh. Leon grumbling about smoking being bad for you early on gets recontextualized when Leon lights Luis's cig for him. Just that tacit acknowledgment that Luis is dying, and that he's earned Leon's respect. It wouldn't hit the same with "got gum" being the prelude to it.

This new Leon is great because it feels like a natural progression from what he was like in RE2. But OG RE4 Leon is great as this separate interpretation from what OG fans got from him in the original 2. He feels more like an action hero, or a comic protagonist. He's cool, skilled at what he does, and blatantly doesn't care about anything in the plot. He's the perfect personality for the original game.
In the original time-line, Leon's personality is very little consistent between different games.

Part of why I loved the original was the anime-esque, over the top absurdity of everything. The choreography looked straight out of an 80's Japan action movie. All while somehow maintaining the terrifying aura of the world as a whole. Blood and death and corpses surrounding our protagonist at all times, but Leon acting like it's another day on the job. The man is truly fearless at this point.
I see what they were going for in the remake, but the hyper realism doesn't translate very well to what the 2005 version was going for. Narratively, and setting-wise.
I missed seeing Leon doing double backflip pirouettes into a knife attack from the third floor of a building... And how he would hit on every woman in the game (except for Ashley lmao)
Thing is, remake is still goofy but in a bad, flat way not in a charming and awesome way the original was.

@Mister_Clean I know. Not only censored, but blatant corners cut - Mike's crashed chopper is completely missing and replaced by a silly little fire in the distance. In the og you could even inspect the crash cite with an interractible prompt. Missing details like this spoil the whole remake.

Different Leons for different takes of what happened in Raccoon City + Darkside Chronicles. I like both of them.
2000s Leon is great because of the nostalgia and closing the era of old style RE/Capcom.
2020s Leon is great for grounded and realistic character development thanks to the era of RE7/8/2make/4make.

The real issue is that he doesn't have the personality YOU want which it's ok to have that opinion. However, the rest of us that would actually like a mature story will gladly take our new multi-faceted protagonist rather than another a shallow hero that feels unsolicited comments towards women's bodies are cool

The most emotional Leon got in the entire remake was holding Ashley's hand when they were removing las plagas from her. The rest of the game he has the same face dropping worse one liners than in the og, this remake is like if I remade DMC3 but Dante was all sad and serious the whole game because his mom is dead. If remake Leon was what we got on 2004 he wouldn't be even half as loved as he is. Without mentioning how both Ramon and saddler are way more bland here unlike in the OG where every time Leon fucks with them is comedy gold.
In general the remake just feels less alive than the og, more generic and forgettable
I'll admit the death of Luis was better in the remake though, the voice actor nailed it, but the removal of the "I got gum" line is very sad because it's a really funny and smart way to show Leon quit smoking instead of "those things can kill you"
OG Leon is and will always be superior. His banter with the villains in OG 4 made the game. He was charismatic, fearless, and badass.
Man has been through 3 or 4 apocalypses at this point.
