I am not aware who voiced "The Majini" in RE5 though all of the enemy names like in RE4, are in Swahili. Learned this only somewhat recently (2 years ago or so) but most of the enemies and such have very interesting names if you find out the Swahili translation. Majini is "water (flowing)" or "a current" seems like Swahili is just bit different but my understanding is it can mean just "water" or "flow of water" or so on, or, that is added by the "ni" after maji. The spider like enemies are called just Spiderheads and over all, I would think I think personally about realities in africa more because of RE5, not less. Be it very campy, the story underlines themes of exploitation in Africa, especially from western capitalist sources, while most of the surroundings in beginning speak of the poverty people are in instead of being lifted up. While they can be seen as racially insensitive, the parts with tribes people speaks how Africa still has their remote and more tribalist tribes, even today, which can be weird but is also culturally rich and diverse thing that has beautiful and unique art and structures. Sheva underlines her wish to help her people and friends throughout the game. It is simple, it is campy, it does not try to be deep, because these are not that deep of themes, but just things we do not think about most of the time. The game certainly lacks the misguided Japanese views of pre 90's or so where they saw Africa as uncivilized continent that needed other people to civilize and teach them better and "evolve up" to the same level with rest of the world, and RE5 instead reminds that we are not saving Africa as hard as we'd wish, that Africa has troubles and multi cultural aspects of it's own and is also a uniquely beautiful place that has no other on this earth.

All I've heard is it's either fun or just okay, but wasn't as good as RE4, but started taking a piss at it when RE6 came out. But, I do remember the non-controversy about the ''racism'' crap even before it was released.
Addressing the tribal enemies I think it might be a call back to RE4 with the castle druids/ cultists. Where the enemies went for a more older aesthetic. I guess Capcom was like let's do that again for RE5 but since the enemies were African they went for an ancient African aesthetic. The tribal section serves as the games castle section. This can also be backed up by how RE4 starts with a village section and ends with a commando section. This game does the same thing.
@@richardfitzwell4618 nobody said the game is racist just because the enemies happen to be black. It's true that the game isn't explicitly racist. It clearly has anti-colonial themes in its story, but it does feed into the "dark continent" and white savior trope, which are racist. yes, its depiction of Africa is as fictional as the Spaniards in RE4 (although considering how Africa as a continent is portrayed in media it wouldn't surprise me if there are people who didn't know this), but I don't think comparing Spanish cultist/druids to the 'Tribal African' stereotype is fair. It could have been handled better IMO.
Finally, somebody that doesn't pander to the "we have to protect the black folk" identity politics. You can make whites as stereotypical as possible, but if you don't make black people actual Mary Sue's, you're a racist. I hate this century's current focus on race.
@@panterxbeats as far as i know, there still some tribes in Africa who live like this. With no civilization at all. So i woudnt call that a stereotype .
@@panterxbeats Pretty sure the white savior trope here is just because they wanted to bring back Chris, and they weren't about to change his skin color just to avoid a trope. If it were a new guy though, then I might agree there.
12 years has passed since his original review. So much fun memories with that one. Shame Mark was not in this review. I would like see these two recreate my favorite joke in the original review for old time sakes. Johnny: However, it turns out that the mysterious woman in the bird mask who helps the bad guys throughout the entire game turns out to be indeed Jill Valentine. Mark: What it is!? Oh what the. I love that joke, lol!
My favorite memory from playing RE5 online was getting to the Jill/Wesker fight. Once my partner was in the middle of trying to pull the device off Jill, I'd spam the "Go" voice line to cheer them on. Always brought me a smile when they'd return the favor.
I thought for the sections with the tribal Majini that they were actual tribes and not anyone regressed from civilized to tribal. I thought there were still tribes in Africa.
There are tribes in africa still to this day that do much of the stereotypical things that you would think of. Most important thing though is that these people who became enemies were victims of bioterrorism.
Glad to see we're finally picking this up again. I'm still a fairly new RE fan but I've managed to play the first 4 and I hope I'll get to the rest eventually.
That point about the village majinis being "regressed" regular ones is utter BS. They already existed as a tribe even before getting infected. The wiki literally says they are unrelated to the revolt in Kijuju. Oh and just get it on Pc. Ambient Occlusion, higher resolution, higher and consistent framerate, mods, reshade, proper working mouse & keyboard controls.. etc
Was gonna say, i didn't think the tribal people regressed as a result of the virus from what i remembered of the game. They were an isolated tribe in the lore
Does the lore say anything about the tribal enemies being citizens from elsewhere that regressed to their primal instincts / attire? Because my impression was definitely just that countries have tribal land, and on that tribal land are people in attire consistent with their values / culture. It didn't seem to me like it was meant to be like, "Before the outbreak, these people were driving cars and wearing nice suits. Now they're reverting back to their primal instincts." Again, maybe I just am unaware of a lore drop that said this. But that's not the impression I got at all from them. The environments in which you fight them are consistent with the idea that they were already tribal. It's just that the virus broke into their tribe.
This was probably said before but i'll say it again I *Love* the fact that the intro pay homage to all of Johnny's Vs era. From the very beginning to the days of now. It's just this small detail that i adore about it. The tune is also damn catchy.
One of my favorite video gaming moments actually happened in this game. It was during the moment where Chris and Sheva rendezvoused with Josh and were ambushed by the enemy. I had to hold them off while Josh was activating the elevator, and there was a moment where one guy was charging to climb over a fence, I blasted his head off with my shotgun, he continued charging towards the fence, climbed over it, and ran directly towards me before finally falling over dead. I had to pause the game because I couldn't stop laughing at this headless guy running after me.
I know that *technically* the parasite can still control a body without a head sometimes, so the enemy falling over a second late isn't too unreasonable... but holy shit is it hilarious watching an enemy just mosey around with no head.
The thing with the tribal village is explained on one of the documents. A villager says that they always dress in traditional garb, that includes war paint and all sometimes. But Las Plagas made them violent, as such they dressed for war
@@playerone6995 There's a common trope in Hollywood of "Africa = Tribal and Violent", and also, there's a concerning history of racism against Africa present in many Asian countries as well (China notably censors Marvel movie posters to cover black people's faces). It's something that people draw conclusions of racism from due to context more than what it actually is.
RE5's a GREAT Resident Evil game, sure it's more action packed than scary, but the puzzles are good, the African atmosphere was good, the boss fights were amazing, Sheva Alomar was a great partner just not a great AI partner, Jill Valentine being Wesker's super soldier was awesome, great references to the previous games, GOOD companion piece to RE4, it has an AMAZING Story Progression that was built-up from Code Veronica X, and it's just a blast, guys give RE5 another try and it earns alot of attention it's very UNDERRATED.
I loved RE5 and my love for it grew some time back when a friend of mine decided to give it a shot after being made a fan with the RE2 remake. Having played it before, I decided for our coop sessions to play on veteran (hard) mode and man. You try telling my friend that RE5 isn't a survival horror when things hurt, ammo gets very scarce, especially during the late game with all the enemies they throw at you, and we have to make calls to either stand and fight or try and break through.
My first RE game. Very fond memories of it. I know it was VERY different from the originals but I can always hop into it when I feel like going against rabid monsters as a Brick Wall and his sidekick lol
Not my first but this game has always stuck around like glue. I've done everything multiple times with multiple friends. As much that's wrong with it, it's a really good kick back game with a little tension
This game will always mean so much to me. It’s one of the only games my dad ever played with me, he wasn’t really into video games but we beat RE5 11 times together
Finally get to hear you talk about Chris’ boulder punching skills. Been waiting for this ever since the first RE video. Now the true wait for the next mainline Pokemon video starts.
Uncharted 2 and RE5 were THE games that truly looked like a next gen experience at the time. I remember just beating RE4 in 2007 and getting hyped for RE5 with that wild reveal trailer. Sucks that it got downgraded but was still a fun ride and one of the best co-op experiences to date.
7:40 Was it in the game’s lore that the tribal Majini were the result of the infection? I don’t recall that being hinted at, but it has been a while since I’ve played RE5. I thought they were just a middle-of-nowhere culture of people living in the marshlands and were just removed from any advanced society. I do recall a document saying how these other people came in and began issuing medical treatment and such, which was probably Tricell. Honestly, it would make more sense if the marshlands were just undeveloped civilization. Makes them an easy target for all the Uroboros experiments.
According to the village boy notes, they got medical treatment (infected) and gradually became worse. It's a newer version of the deteriorating scientist in the first game.
7:15 As a spaniard I can say that no, there was no backlash with RE4 being in Spain, even if Capcom refuses to say it in any game. But there was some very angry people for the dub of Ganadoss -- they have a very pronounced mexican accent. Not that it matters for the majority of people, we love the cheesiness of that dub and we love to have located in our country one of the best games ever.
There were some people who were unhappy with the way Spain was depicted and you can find examples of this in Spanish gaming media (Hobby Consolas, etc) but it was nothing in comparison to the RE5 racism allegations.
I'm not sure about the villagers 'regressing' personally. When I played, I got the vibe that these villagers were the type to always wear traditional garb and live off the land. The addition of the Las Plagas only served to make them regress into a more violent state like the villagers in RE4. They didn't change their ways to something else entirely, they just got twisted and violent. But that's just my take on it.
Recently replayed this gem with my girlfriend as her first Resident Evil Game, and the bullshit banter we'd get ourselves into during gameplay was absolutely hilarious.
21:38 The PC version is now the definitive way to play this game! Local Co-op was added, a lot of bugs were fixed and most importantly, THE WINDOWS LIVE REQUIREMENT HAS BEEN REMOVED!
I'm a lil sad that John didn't reference Mark's yelling about the Jill reveal cuz its such a good clip of Mark. Also D.C. Douglas is an absolute ham, dork and sweetheart from what I saw when he played RE5 with ProtonJon.
Well was not expecting this to be the new vs. video! Your videos are comfort media to me so I’m happy that your doing another game in my favorite franchise! Great job and thank you!
So Capcom sent a patch update via steam in 2023, fixing the port by removing the window live thing and when using controllers it wont get mix up with keyboard and mouse but oddly enough the game got rid of QTEs and auto runs in sequences and i was so confuse i didnt select anything to do that so i am assuming it was a port thing.
I never beat this game, but I had a ton of fun playing with my friend in high school. We make a habit of playing co-op games (once taking a few years to eventually beat Four Swords Adventures) and neither of us played Resident Evil, so we attempted this one. In fact, I think the main motivation to get this one for a co-op playthrough was the original review of RE 5.
This was such a great game back in the day. It still holds up well, I've played it like a hundred times across multiple consoles but back then there was a culture with it. Everyone was playing it and talking about it, someone was always online. Great times. It was my favorite co-op game of all time until just recently with It Takes Two but RE5 is a very close second.
10:15 "And you know damn well the fans wouldn't accept the death of a beloved Resident Evil character happening off screen." TAKE FUCKING NOTE, ANDERSON!
Yooo, was wondering when this was coming! Had some good memories of coop myself. Re4 was my first RE game- so going back to 1-3 and then playing 5 (like Johnny) really enhanced the fun I had! Keep the good stuff coming John!
Re5 was actually my first Re game ever, so the co op mechanic kinda eased me into the horror genre setting with my older brother being the experienced (sometimes frustrated) guide xD
I love how Village finally acknowledged Chris' boulder punching credentials with Heisenberg calling him a "boulder-punching asshole" for blowing up his factory. Seriously, I had the biggest grin on my face after hearing that for the first time.
@@ssj4jason737 Hell, they were in on the mania surround Lady Dimitrescu during the build up to Village! In fact they revealed her height and shoe size when she started getting attention.
I thought the tribal enemies were just that honestly. Unless I'm missing something the Plaga didn't make them regress to that.... There was a tribe near (Nipdya tribe) the Oil refinery that they experimented on and it caused them to go crazy. So they were just people with that way life who unfortunately were infected and just went crazy. They're in fact pretty cool lore wise as they grew the flowers carrying the progenitor virus.
I played through RE4 at the start of December and finished it for the first time. Later in the month I picked up RE5 and loved it. I had a great time with both games. I have a copy of RE6 I’ll have to get around to playing at some point
7:41 I don’t care. I’ve heard a lot of people saying racist like they were giving out candy bars and or ice cream It doesn’t mean racism doesn’t exist it’s just means the more accusations of racism are made for no reason than assumptions the more racism becomes a static noise in people’s heads
I don't understand the yikes about the traditional African village section, we had that too in RE4 with the whole castle section of fighting medieval knights and dudes wearing ancient monk outfits is that problematic too?
And here I was wondering when you were going to get back to the Resident Evil series. Thanks for this great treat and can't wait for more. I hope to see you at Momocon again.
Probably my favorite RE game, i had so much fun playing Co-op with my brother. Though I'll never forget the time I spent hours playing through single player Desperate Escape on Professional. Definitely the most difficult challenge this game had to offer.
I’m pretty sure the Tribal infected was done to replicate the Zealots from 4 seeing as they both appear as the second type of enemies, but shessh it comes as a tasteless and stupid considering they try to explain as the people in that village didn’t interact much with people outside the village but like did only happen to them surely the townspeople couldn’t have much contact with other places when they got the plagas
14:55 I cant wait for this kid to find this video now as a 20 something year old and realize that it was Johnny who played with him all those years ago.
Really enjoyed this one. I weirdly enjoyed playing RE 5 more the second time than the first. In the middle of my own RE marathon. Just got to Code Veronica. Good luck with FF7 and RE 6 Johnny.
7:00 The whole thing about them dressing up in tribal getup-going back to their cultural roots... Is literally the same thing that happened in RE4. The Spanish villagers started wearing robes-using crossbows-wearing knights armor. They reverted to older cultural apparel and behavior. RE5 is being consistent with Los Plagas for keeping this element. It's not racist or problematic.
You know someone put some real time into getting the high scores in The Mercenaries when they capitalize off the menu speed-reloading while abusing invincibility frames. Very, very good memories.
I think the Tribal Village part of the tribes was meant that the plaga controlling the villagers they became again more of a cult since Excella and Wesker can controls everything. The allegations are overblown tbh the reason why I think RE6 later on went directly to China and Europe and guess what no one complained there. Either way 13+million units still till this day the best RE title that sold and still selling.
Just want to take a moment to say that subtitles within the image and not the letterbox is actually the appropriate thing to do. Movies are played in cinemas where you wouldn't see the letter box, so the subs would be on the image itself. This was a big deal when Blu Rays started becoming popular and so did projectors, and it was a pain in the ass when a movie would have the subs out of the picture for anyone that invested in a projector, as the subs wouldn't display properly since projectors cut out the letterbox. Nowadays, it's quite different, but when RE5 first came out, I'm sure they took this into account.
When I played this for the first time after trying 4, I was so surprised by how well the game played in single player. And with 4 fresh off my belt, I really liked this game.
I frankly dont see anything wrong with the traditional garments some of the enemies wear either. How in the world is it racist to have people of the region wear their traditional garments? Its like saying its racists for a black character to fight norwegian zombies in Bunads. That`s not how it works.
RE 5 is still my fav of the series followed close by the RE 3 remake. All comes down to just how much I love the voice work and following lead characters that are not Leon who I always felt was trying so hard to be cool or a playboy but comes across as well Zapp from Futrama with Chris as a badass man of action. Also I wish if we ever got a new Megaman X game Douglas would voice Sigma.
Probably too much for the game. With more AIs in the game, the worse of performance it will have. Plus you will have to dumb down the AI. Halo Reach had this problem where they made the AI worse than previous games just to have a more enemies.

But, I do remember the non-controversy about the ''racism'' crap even before it was released.
@@Dacho_Shaki oh yeaah RE6 was really getting shit on
Really? I remember most people loving this game... RE6 on the other hand...
Yeah, but because the enemies are black it's considered racist. lol It's dumb as fuck.
Pp
Alot of Johnny's old reviews were like that yeah. He's come a long way. xD
Can’t believe it’s been over 12 years since the original SGB Review for RE5. God do I feel old.
There are tribes in africa still to this day that do much of the stereotypical things that you would think of. Most important thing though is that these people who became enemies were victims of bioterrorism.
Absolutely.

Was NOT expecting a return to Resident Evil today! Will Johnny definitely acknowledge That Boulder Punching Asshole? Let’s find out
It's a shame SGB never made it to this game. Would've loved to see Johnny and Eliot play this together. Or Matt.
Yeah, i've always wanted that... why did it never happen? They've done RE4, and considering John's history with RE5, I can't imagine why it never did.

I loved playing this game with my cousin. He never wanted to play it alone, which makes sense.
Now they're reverting back to their primal instincts."
Again, maybe I just am unaware of a lore drop that said this. But that's not the impression I got at all from them. The environments in which you fight them are consistent with the idea that they were already tribal. It's just that the virus broke into their tribe.
You weren't supposed to question Johnny while he's virtue signaling!!!

I *Love* the fact that the intro pay homage to all of Johnny's Vs era.
Yes, I didn't understand Johnny's "yike" comments tbh

Mine was Resident Evil 0, unfortunately. I never beat it though.
That's an awesome memory to hold on to 👍
Finally get to hear you talk about Chris’ boulder punching skills. Been waiting for this ever since the first RE video.
Now the true wait for the next mainline Pokemon video starts.
If he gets to Arceus it will be a treat
I've got a bad feeling he's gonna retire before doing them.
I can support that claim.
It's weird for people who have no issue mowing down European people to suddenly have an issue when it's someone else
"Hey all you lovebirds. I'm talking to the couple behind you there"

I love that ending theme. ^_^
Also, DC Douglas is a national treasure & he is so damn good as a Voice Actor for A. Wesker.
This game is cake. You can beat it in less than 10 hours. Should have been a dlc
10:15 "And you know damn well the fans wouldn't accept the death of a beloved Resident Evil character happening off screen."

That means that Capcom is in on the meme of boulder punching Chris
@@ssj4jason737 Hell, they were in on the mania surround Lady Dimitrescu during the build up to Village! In fact they revealed her height and shoe size when she started getting attention.
Also, it means that should they ever make a 5 remake, they CAN'T remove that. They wrote themselves into having to use it should they ever remake 5.
This was the pinnacle of RE going from horror to action, after this RE was going from action back to horror.
For me this is hands down my personal favorite Resident Evil game, especially when playing with friends.
7:41
I don’t care.
I’ve heard a lot of people saying racist like they were giving out candy bars and or ice cream
It doesn’t mean racism doesn’t exist it’s just means the more accusations of racism are made for no reason than assumptions the more racism becomes a static noise in people’s heads
Her Red Riding Hood costume is reference to B.B. Hood from Darkstalkers.
Really enjoyed this one. I weirdly enjoyed playing RE 5 more the second time than the first. In the middle of my own RE marathon. Just got to Code Veronica.
Good luck with FF7 and RE 6 Johnny.
7:00
The whole thing about them dressing up in tribal getup-going back to their cultural roots...
7:12 Yeah get used to that. I feel like I reset the clock on that alot. And no spanyerds didnt get mad we're ether pretty chill or all chill.

Surprised no reference to the Ricardo Irving "Boom!" in this review. One of my favorite running gags from the SGB RE5 review.
Seeing Allan Groves get the credit he deserves as an amazing actor just makes this review all the better! Groves has got amazing range!
Resident Evil 5: Chris Redfield the MASTER of Boulder Punching
When I played this for the first time after trying 4, I was so surprised by how well the game played in single player. And with 4 fresh off my belt, I really liked this game.
I guess Johnny doesn't really know what's going on with DC Douglas now..
I frankly dont see anything wrong with the traditional garments some of the enemies wear either. How in the world is it racist to have people of the region wear their traditional garments? Its like saying its racists for a black character to fight norwegian zombies in Bunads. That`s not how it works.
(Before watching the vid)
I didn't realize the Boulder Punching Ahole was in FFVII.
