The Devil May Cry Marathon concludes today, and we're back in the original continuity! That was fast! So, did the devs learn from their shortcomings last time? I hope so, I still see that board game in my sleep.

Implying I’m not lmao
6:27 ...funny how that joke had gone full circle
Its hard
Show gta some love
Giving a 9 minute battle theme to the guy who can wipe out almost any enemy encounter in 30 seconds is such a Devil May Cry move
BURY THE LIGHT DEEP WITHIN
That’s what Must Die and Legendary Dark Knight modes are for.
I remember Yakuza 5 doing that with Akiyama. He had an amazing battle theme but you had to wait a whole minute to get to the best parts and you destroy everyone in 30 seconds
@@MrBonzeMedalDamn. Now I want Johnny vs Yakuza series
It was a real power move, if you ask me
4:51 Correction: The Bloody Palace was actually added as a free update for the original release. It was never exclusive to the Special Edition.
Another correction at 20:45 then devil breakers don't degrade, the get destroyed by being hit during use, the break away move and their breakage moves. You can use the same overture breaker through the entire bloody palace if you tried.
yes, Bloody Palace came to the original game like 1 month after release
Another correction at 17:00 there are plenty of hidden red-orb caches strewn about the game
Another correction:
...doesn't special edition have the exclusive multiplayer mode
Devil Breakers don't degrade over time, they break when you get hit in the middle of using one or fully charge them.
I think the reason that you can’t switch devil breakers is because the developers want players to be more comfortable with breaking them to get to the one you want to use wether it’s manually breaking them or holding the circle button to use the devil breakers super attack.
I have a similar theory, I think with Nero being the starting character he needed the simplest combat system to master, thus switching between 8 breakers would be an overcomplication to his kit. The idea of breaking them though is still super awesome as it provides a risk/reward.
And the super moves are totally worth it. Iirc the buster super move just deletes whatever you use it on.
I've destroyed DOZENS of breakers by accidently hitting the self-destrict button. If I ever go back to the game, I'm gonna see whether I can unbind that button or deactivate the mechanic entirely, it's virtually useless in post-game.
@@TheXell that's not even a you problem, EVERY let's play on youtube has someone accidentaly breaking a couple with breakaway.
that really shouldn't have been near the lock on button lol
@@TheXell Yeah and when it is useful, whoopsies outta devil breakers, gotta just get hit.
9:40 in the visions of v book it actually reveal that Vergil just wants to fight Dante, not to the death, just sparring. Really wish that was more obvious in game. it kinda there at the beginning with both them seemly happy to fight one another and also a bit tragic seeing as Vergil just wants to fight while Dante is out to kill. It is basically a reverse of the final fight of dmc3. i would highly recommend the visions of v because it goes more into Vergil and V's character. it just a shame that in a book not in the game. thank you to whoever is reading this and have a nice day or night.
Even without reading the novel I could always tell that this was the case. I mean they both know that the other is practicality immortal and insanely durable so they can just go all out in each other when they fight. I never got the vibe that they actually wanted to kill eachother. It's just how I would imagine twins with demonic heritage to act with each other. Dante and Vergil's relationship kinda reminds me of Baki and Yujiro Hanma, they communicate through fighting and combat.
Johnny throwing a "Dios mío!" at 13:49 was the best thing I've heard today.
More Johnny Vs is never a bad thing.
Patiently waiting for Jonny vs ff8....
Seconded!
@@elpizo1789 Eh, I'd like to see him maybe cover Sly Cooper
True. Though I'm wondering where the Johnny Vs. Pokemon 3ds games series is..
@@theraycat9681i'm curious how do YOU feel about each of those 3ds games Mr. theraycat9681?
This game really pulled my Devil Trigger as Nero once said "This is Devil May Cry, V". It's such a subtle reference to this game being the 5th DMC game. Bravo Hideaki Itsuno!
DMC5’s Devil Trigger is one of the coolest video game songs ever. Never get tired of listening to it while working out.

I wouldn’t mind a sorta Spotlight or Round 2 of the Bayonetta trilogy now that you have a renewed mindset of character action games thanks to Devil May Cry. Speaking of which, this was a fun marathon to watch!
And so ends another great marathon. I mentioned in the DMC3 video that a couple days before that video came out I got jaw surgery and was early in my recovery. Because of that, this has been one of the worst summers of my life (non-chew diets suck). One of the things that helped me get through this summer was this marathon. I love these games and I was really happy to see what you thought of them. Thank you Johnny. Thank you for this marathon and for being something I can look forward to watching and enjoying in general.
I know the feeling. Wisdom teeth removal means not being able to eat freely until your mouth heals.
@@smashmaster521trust me, jaw surgery is ten times worse. Wisdom teeth removal is a couple days of just soft foods before going back to normal. Jaw surgery is 3 and a half MONTHS for a full recovery in terms of diet.
@@KingCasual1986 Wow, that sounds horrendous. My sympathies dude. I hope your recovery ends soon if it hasn't already.
Many of the DMC Anime and manga references are really great to take in.
Morrison and the Girl from the first phone call are from the Anime.
Nico's mother being the creator of the Ebony and Ivory is also a great touch.
You're almost correct. It was Nico's grandma (on her mom side) that created Ebony and Ivory. Dunno why they Nick Fury'd Morrison tho, weird.
I follow the games so i didn't know there was an anime.
Though, I'm pretty sure Morrison was white in the anime, so you have to wonder, what happened?
Correction: breakers do not break "over time", they break either if you're hit mid-use, if you manually break them (which also acts as an escape from hitstun or grabs), or when you use their charged attack, which is usually some overpowered variant on their normal attack that comes at the cost of that breaker.
Hearing Johnny on DMC 5 while playing DMC 5, now that's the good stuff.
(Ha I see what you did there… I think)
DMC5 isn't just my favorite DMC game, it's one of my favorite games period. An absolute masterpiece of an action game that blew me out of the water. Super excited to hear your thoughts on it!
All facts. Im still finding new combo routes and trying to master the combat in DMC5. it's so good.
Yeah, the reveal for this game is what got me into the series. It's easily in my top 5 of all time.
It’s also the best game that actually handled its mantle pass well.
Absolutely right. A Masterpiece as close to perfection as you can get.
@@bearerofbadnews1375 This. 4 tried to pass the torch to Nero but didn't manage it well enough though it gave us a game to introduce us to Nero as a character.
5 successfully passes the torch to Nero in a satisfying way and personally, I love that we got to see and play Nero's confrontation with his father which was something I always wanted to see once I learned Nero was Vergil's son.
This game is tied with 3 as my favourite game in the series.
I love Nero’s toolkit dmc 5 they expanded a lot from his gameplay in 4. Also he can air taunt now riding his sword like surfboard it’s awesome.
I also love thst you can Max-ACT while doing an Air Taunt too.
Mechanics-wise, the Air Taunt giving you more air time and boosting the jump is such a good idea that I'm surprised it wasn't done sooner.
Round 2's of Bayonetta would be cool for sure! I felt completely different about my feelings on the Bayonetta games after my own DMC marathon, and I'm interested to hear your thoughts as well. Great video (and marathon) as always!!!
Same with me and the classic God of War games. After experiencing the depth of combat in DMC, I find something lacking in God of War coming back to it.
I think playing DMC after watching Bayo made me learn that sometimes more simple stories with well-rounded characters can be more effective than overly-complicated and less focused ones.
It was at this time when this game released it made me realize, how much I love these types of game where it would always prioritize fun and engaging mechanics as well as having fun characters that never really take things to seriously (Dante). I feel games like these are fading out slowly within the industry as we move forward as we focus on graphical fidelity, cinematic realism and e sports. But this and games like Hi-Fi Rush made me realize this how fun video games can be again as I've kinda taken a backseat when it comes to games.
I'd recommend checking out the upcoming Genokids for you, as it's a character action/hack-and-slash type game with a lighter tone to it. Got some cool stuff going with being able to swap on-the-fly between characters with different movesets, to do stuff like many different combos or immediately jumping out of a knockback.
Perhaps a game from earlier this year too by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. It's not so much a character action game as it is a 3D over-the-shoulder brawler in an interconnected world. It's set in a bizarre, stone age-like land called Zenozoik filled with equally bizarre, monstrous creatures.
Main character Pseudo's kind of stoic at first, but over the course of the game he has some fun insults to his enemies and little teases to his companion.
Solid game in a colourful and imaginative world.
Soulstice is a game i would also want to mention to spread the word about. For it's a game that i really like and is quite good, but it's rather serious in tone. Most humor there comes from some dry wit and sarcasm between the main two characters (named Briar and Lute) and their on-field superior Layton.
(I personally jive more with the tone and characters in Soulstice compared to HFR, but HFR's praise is definitely deserved)
Soulstice has got its high points, low points, interesting points and points that could be improved upon, and stuff in-between. And i'd love for it to gain enough traction for an even better sequel.
Regardless of tone, i'm hoping here with you for more fun, cool and interesting hack-and-slash/character action games to be made reality in the future.
The thing with dr. Faust is that the more you replay the game, the more you get the red orbs and then that hat becomes one of the most broken weapons in the game. I love this game! im still playing it since the release date and im still in love, i play it everytime i got free time to play something ❤
It's crazy how pro Nero players break arms routinely. It's super awesome to watch
If I remember, correctly, how Vergil recovered and why he stabbed himself with Yamato, I believe that all of Mundus' servants were freed after his defeat, but were left VERY weak, to the point where all but Phantom had to team up with V just to survive. Phantom was the only exception because he wouldn't work for V, no matter what.
Do you have a source? Was this shown in the manga? Sounds really interesting and now I wanna know more
@@The_Broyi I know I got it from a timeline video, though I can't remember which one. It was explained in a prequel manga.
@@The_Broyi I know I got it from a timeline video, though I can't remember which one. It was explained in a prequel manga.
@xXBROYIXx It was covered in Visions of V, yes, but it's not what op described.
After DMC1, Vergil managed to escape and rid himself of Mundus' influence, but his years of torture and battle under Mundus left him on the verge of death. He went to get Yamato and used it to cut away his human "shell" (maybe so his demon self could heal properly? Maybe cuz he veiwed his humanity as a weakness? I'm not sure if they ever properly explained.) But he also separated the nightmares that haunted him from his time as Nelo Angelo, aka V and his familiars.
They realized they needed to team up in order to survive, but the Phantom nightmare was just a bit too much like the original, and refused to submit to a human, so they killed him.
@@eonnexus From what I remember, the intent of splitting himself in two was indeed to allow his demonic side to regenerate his body and cutting out his perceived weakness.
Vergil as V however did not count on Urizen going nuts over his blind obssession with power and going for the Qliphoth fruit. He got a front row seat to seeing how he is like without his humanity keeping him in check and it wasn't pretty at all.

i would like to see a round 2 on the bayonetta series as a whole, now that you have fully grasped devil may cry, there could be things you can appreciate a little more in the bayonetta series and maybe a look at cereza and the lost demon in the future? 🙂🙏🏻
On the topic of Bayonetta 3, the game got patched to make Viola's Witch Time more forgiving.
Patty from the Devil May Cry animated series had a voice cameo in DMC5, albeit she is older than her previous incarnation. It was interesting that the game incorporated elements from every Devil May Cry media.
Speaking of Bayonetta, isn’t it true that Devil May Cry takes place in the same universe?
I’d be up for a bayonetta revisit.
Dante’s gameplay really is a masterclass on how to do character action game gameplay; so many tools to work with to get into the flow and reach triple S. What did you think of his Quadruple S mechanic?
Also what are your thoughts on this game’s bosses? Which were your favourites and least favourites?
My main issue is that he doesn't really have a grapple move to quickly close the distance towards an enemy and keep up your combo compared to the other 3
@@soulkibble1466 But he has the trickster style? What about air and ground trick?
Now that Johnny has garnered enough interest in the series, he will one day be featured in the fabled "Devil May Cry 6 Teaser Trailer | Live Reaction Compilation." We can dream.
Yeah Morrison and Patty are from the anime (Patty makes an off-screen cameo in this game) this game is fan service
DMC5 is a good game.
Glad you enjoyed .... Bayonetta franchise aside, when's Onimusha 2 sequel lol 😂
LETS GOOOOOO
Thank you for playing, Johnny! This was one of my all time favorite series, and I'm always excited to see new people going into the series. If this is where DMC ended as a series though, I wouldn't be disappointed. Top tier game, great send off for a lot of these characters, and that soundtrack is fire.
Yeah do a Bayonetta retrospective, make sure to do Bayonetta Origins because too many people were sleeping on that game
Now that DMC5 is 4 years old (My Lord!) I can say that’s it’s my personal GOAT action game. It doesn’t really have any flaws. I didn’t mind V’s gameplay, I actually thought it was a nice break from Nero and Dante’s gameplay. The story and characters are a great time. I never felt burnt out
15:48 Funny thing I just got done watching the Bayo 3 Review when this video popped up
DMC 5 is one of my favorite games ever. It has the best version of Dante, a more versitle Nero and the craziest version of Vergil. V was also a fun experiment. The final boss and ending in general made me feel things. It was incredible.
Vergil's faces in this game are hilarious. When he is first introduced, he looks like he just heard Dante say some wild bs
I'll say that There is hidden Red orb spots I don't know them all but there is a few. But honestly I would love to see you revisit Bayonetta with a DMC Mindset it would be great imo. I was kinda surprised you didnt talk much about what the reboot did for DMC 5 honestly. But regardless this marathon was a blast. Thank you for making this.
I should get around to playing this some day. It’s crazy to see you still uploading for so long.
There was supposed to be a DLC for Special Edition focusing on Lady and Trish called Ladies Of The Night or something like that, but it got canned. Likely for the same reason that cutscene is different for Vergil's playthrough.
Great series of videos for a phenomenal series of games, so glad you enjoyed the ride man!
Also if you want an easy "Marathon", the The World Ends With You series is only two games, I'd highly recommend them and hope you check them out one day, absolutely love their writing
That evil twin Urizen joke...I wonder if he knew when he added that joke to his script.
I actually really disagree on the "Rollercoaster" analogy for this series. You are never anywhere near done after just one playthrough. Hell, you unlock Nero's full moveset at the end of the game. The point of giving ranks is to incentivize getting better. You are chasing those S ranks on harder difficulties. And it's way easier in 5 since you aren't graded on Orbs found or Time anymore.
Bloody Palace is in OG DMC5, they just didn't have it at launch. It was only a few weeks to wait for it to get added, though.
Devil Trigger is just a goddamn good song, I have it as my ringtone. Seriously.
DMCV was just insane, wild, and marvelous. Love the story, gameplay, cinematics, and the music.
The best? Hell yeah 🤘
Been enjoying these DMC videos and glad to see you really enjoyed DMC5. One correction I wanted to make is that the Devil Breakers don't break after being used a set number of times; they break if you get hit when using that Devil Breaker's attack, when you manually destroy one, or use their ultimate move. I want to say that the Buster Arm breaks after a set number of uses, but I didn't use it a lot in my playthroughs, so I can't say.
11:18 He is the same character from the anime and even voiced by the same VA in the Japanese version - Akio Otsuka (Solid Snake, Naked Snake, Solidus Snake & Venom Snake, Batou from Ghost in the Shell, Kurogasa from Rurouni Kenshin, Seth from Street Fighter).
"Bury the Light" hit over 100M RUclips views.
After just hearing it first time... well earned.
This game establishing the anime is canon means that more than likely Patty can open a gate to get the Sparda brothers out of the underworld.
Surprised he didnt make a kingdom hearts joke with Vergil, V, and Urizen
Nero Switching Devil Breakers was taken out so you could switch but it was removed last second checking the games code and stuff
11:34 John there’s a devil may cry animated series and manga to help you learn who Morrison is. Before Morrison there was a broker named Enzo
"Uhhh....They gave Morrison a hat!" fuckin got me in tears. I do agree about the awkward dialogue with Nico. Its like she is ALMOST cute with the design and accent but sometimes her lines paired with the accent just makes it overall cringey in a way that its embarrassing to hear.
Dante gets a sawblade motorcycle. OHOHOHOHOHO, DANTE USES A SWITCHAXE ON FULL CHARGE! YES PLEASE!
DMC5, what a freaking game. Nero feels like the cockiness of reboot Dante was siphoned into our devil arm boy, the haircut change really suggested it too. But honestly, given how easily he would blend in with Dante, I like the bigger distinction between them. Honestly, even with less exploration in the worlds, I think the replay value in S ranking and revisiting levels lends itself better to making the game a high point of the franchise. 5th time is a charm, they hit it out of the park. This game is fantastic, and I hope we come back to this franchise soon.
17:00 they havent get rid of it, if you stand still at some specific places, you'll get some hidden red orbs.
one thing I feel I MUST point out, there's a mod that replaces the motorcycle weapon with a tiny tricycle. it's just as dumb as it sounds, and it's amazing
I'd love to see a Round 2 on Bayonetta Series after this marathon; To get your opinion on where Bayo 3 went wrong and what could be learnt from DMC.
"Oh, Vergil! Why do you look like you got stung by bees?" I'm assuming it's because of the game engine.
the devil breakers don't break over time, they only break when you break it or when an enemy hits oyu as you're using the breaker so that you don't lose score for getting hit
what surprises me is that they had cameos from the anime
"I can't wait to find out that Urizen is actually Dante's evil twin"
Well, actually...
I like how this game can be best summarized as Vergil hires Vergil's brother and Vergil's son to kill Vergil so that Vergil can become Vergil (featuring Vergil).
It's time for goat on goat action. That dante and vergil ending bit got a good laugh outta me.
6:30 excellent foreshadowing
As if Nero and his sword the Red Queen didn't have enough of a resemblance to Squall and his Gunblade, DMC5 went and added a mechanic reminiscent to FF8's Junction System with Nero's Devil Breakers
I'd be down for a Bayonetta revisit, but I think it would be fine as 1 video, instead of 3.
After playing it on Turbo mode the whole time, the switch back to Standard is very noticeable. Feels like a slo-mo mode which is wild to me considering I played vanilla version 6 times.
I think Special Edition is the way to especially since it has Vergil and all the extra Devil Breakers and whatnot on disc. Also it's part of PS Extra/Premium so you can play it if you're a subscriber.
Fun fact: Vergil after reforming is no longer searching for power, in the visions of v manga V has a talk with vergil and vergil reveals that he simply just wants to continue fighting Dante because he considers it “the best”
In regards to the Bayonetta revisit, would definitely prefer one shorter video talking about it rather than full re-reviews like you've done in the past
Vergil hires Vergil's brother and Vergil's son to defeat Vergil so Vergil could become Vergil.
When you play as Nero I recommend remapping the gun button to one of the shoulder buttons, Blue Rose's charged shot is pretty good.
17:01 Nope, they're still there (ex.: Jump on the statue in Mission 3).
19:15 You can Ex-Act while taunting in mid-air.
I have only ever played this game with Virgil's chair mod, and I dont regret that decision.
You'll be happy/surprised to know that alot of people would rank the Devil May Cry games in a similar way, with DMC being the only differing factor.
I told you this would be your favorite in the series.
Another satisfied customer.
Bloody Palace is in the base version of DMC 5 btw
Fun Fact: Lucia makes an appearance in the DMC5 Prequel Novel.. Also was potentially gonna be a part of a Girls Night DLC that got canned but I'm not gonna talk about how annoying that is to me. Lucia needs to be in a good game.
So what’s the more apocalyptic event, the 3 volcano eruptions in Europe, or the Qliphoth
I'd be down to see you take another crack at the bayonetta series with a post dmc mindset. I mean, I like both of those games, and your videos, so it's a no-brainer for me.👍
Bloody palace was on the orgininal release as free dlc.
I do love the Introduction of this "End of the Marathon of Totem Pole Ranking" where you Rank Every Game of the Marathon that you do, I'd like to see this done More Often in every End of a Marathon ^v^
Well, I hope you'll keep videos going, John.(Sorry to your uncle on SGB, I referencing, yet damage were done) On a note, if the Zelda handhelds will come soon, we look forward to that.
I love how Vergil, in spite of his search for power, can't even outmatch Dante, which says how predictable Vergil is, and now his son is also his equal. Shows that seeking more power isn't the be all end all in this world.
But yeah, this is probably the best character action game on the market, and it's not even close.
I wonder, with how highly heralded DMC5 is as the best character action game around, are there any character action games that you find kinda rough on their own merits, but still interesting and worth talking about, or seeing how they could continue in the future?
In the middle of the video he mentions they got rid of the red orb clusters you got for doing outlandish things. They are still there but you have to stand in a specific spot for a few seconds. It's usually on top of a puddle of blood that has no right to be there.
Bloody Palace is available in standard versions of the game, but you do need to purchase the Vergil DLC to access it. The only exclusive content to Special Edition is Turbo Mode and Legendary Dark Knight. Thankfully, PC players have been able to reimplement these modes via mods, as well as loads of QOL improvements across all of the characters, so the PC version with mods is the best way to play the game if you don't have a PS5 or Series X.
A stream or a Now and Then/Round 2 with all the Bayonetta games would be pretty interesting, we all love that sort of comparison.
I’m honestly glad I got into Devil May Cry prior to this game’s release. I’m buddies with some people who have been fans for a while and was happy to hear they were ecstatic at 5’s announcement after a period of uncertainty. I myself loved this game. It’s one of my favorite hack-n-slashes and one of my favorite games from 2019.
And so the Devil May Cry Marathon has come to an end! Still funny Dan accidentally revealed DMC5 was a thing. Leave to Vergil to screw a reveal up, atleast it wasnt a intentional NDA break reveal like Albert Wesker once did I mean DC Douglas
10:49 it's a one way trip... That can be solved several ways so expect a DMC 6 at some point
23:39 Yep they are indeed the same :)
TL;DR version Majin Devil Trigger in DMC2 is referred to as 真魔人モード (Shin Majin/Devil Mode) in the Japanese version, whilst in the Japanese version of DMC5 Sin Devil Trigger is called 真魔人 (literally Shin Majin). I don't think there's been a reason why it got changed to SIN Devil Trigger instead of Shin but both sound cool in my opinion so I don't mind lol
It would be the absolute best thing in the world if in the next game, Nero ends up going to the underworld and when he see's dante and vergil their just absolutely exhausted and sitting down. and Vergil is sitting in a demonic make shift lawn chair
I loved the addition of the totem pole rankings. Gives me classic Johnny vibes. Love your stuff, man.
As cool at the Cavalier weapon is, Capcom pulled a real bone headed (or greedy on how it looks) move where the variant of it, Cavalier-R, has a new move not available to the base weapon. The only way to get it is paying its stand alone DLC
11:45 He got the Birdie (Street Fighter) treatment, the "reverse MJ" 😂
This is probably an unpopular opinion but I don't care about story in hack n slash games.
Not every video game have to have a deep storytelling like a JRPG, just having fun 😄
Cereza and the Lost Demon
Hidden red Orbs still exist, there's certain spots you have to stand in for a couple of seconds
Correction:
Bloody Palace was a free update BEFORE the Special Edition’s announcement.
I seriously have to thank you for doing this marathon. I played DMC3 in June, loved it, and beat DMC5 with Vergil yesterday. This may be my favorite game I've played this year, and I have you to thank for getting me into this series.
Sad to see you didn't bring up the "live action" cutscenes. They are legitimately hilarious to the point I have to take a break sometimes due to how hard I was laughing. Still, awesome review!
Giving Bayonetta 1 the VS treatment and a look back on Bayonetta 2? Yeah I’m down for that and hey John that’s another SGB review for you to knock off your bucket list of Re reviews!
I'd say that it's less that these games don't consider plot a high priority and more that the plot just happens to be the unlikely happy marriage between soap operas and shonen anime. Saving the world is a side effect of these stories, not the main goal. The story is all about the character interactions and character drama. Sibling rivalry, a nephew seeking the respect of his uncle, a son seeking to prove his strength to his father, if this series didn't have character drama there wouldn't be any substance left.
Sweet! A new review on my birthday, using my Raycon Everyday Headphones to listen in.
Do you know about the manga for this game? It's called Devil May Cry Visions of V, and as is obvious by the title, focuses on V and his perspective before the start and over the course of the game's story. It's a very fun read and I think does a very good job developing V as a character and his relationship with his familiars(the banter between V and Griffin especially is a delight), and by extent developing Vergil as well. But the standout is absolutely the artwork, illustrated by Ogata Tomio who is also the writer. It's one of the most stunning manga I've ever laid eyes on, almost every page made me stop and stare. Highly recommend checking it out for the illustrations alone.
