Metroid Prime Remastered?
Is Nora coming with you?
Safe travels!
Return to Philly so SGB Revival?
What? You're moving again?
The fact that the in-universe folks in Mega Man Legends would look back on the Classic Mega Man era in the same way we’d look back on the Paleozoic… is some _shit_ to contemplate.
This game gets kinda heavy at times.
Bet they look at the X to Zero series as the Middle Ages lol
@zetagundam20x Nah, the *entirety* of the Classic through ZX time is like Mesopotamia at best to them. The early dawn of civilization.
It's been *that* fucking long. It's been so long, in fact, that you could play out the entirety of the events of the rest of the franchise, including Battle Network and Star Force, and their intervening time gaps five times without reaching Legends.
The gap between ZX and Legends is more comparable to the real life time between the dawn of human civilization and today, possibly even larger.
There's probably a museum filled to the brim of Gutsman fossils...
Also pretty sad that the ZX series was about the most peaceful the Megaman timeline has been since Classic and that civilization eventually got wiped out by yet another apocalypse but not before some sort of lunar AI was set up that would genocide civilization to keep the population under control. (haven't played the second game; no spoilers please)
Megaman Legends just has so much charm. The characters, the art style, the goofy story and characters. It all just works. I remember as a kid the dungeons used to creep me out.
The dungeon soundtrack is hypnotizing
Oh how I love this game's visuals, it's amazing how well they hold up for the era.
That 2D animation on 3D models look is amazing for the anime aesthetic
Kinda amazing how unique it looks for the era too
Gurumin 3D has that sort of look to it as well
it's not just for that era, it still is impressive even by today's standard, in term of facial expressions and emotions the characters gives, for anime aesthetic games i mean
Yeah, the relatively simple body shapes and the emphasis on facial expressions really add a lot. I'm surprised more games didn't attempt a similar style when this holds up so much better than those that went for more conventional or realistic artstyles. Closest I can think off the top of my head is a game called Silent Bomber and Legend of Dragoon; both of which suffer from overcomplicated character designs that don't translate well to polygons.
I really wish the legends games were available on modern platforms.
It can happen one day, I mean the other Mega Man series' are getting Legacy Collections, so eventually it can happen for the Legends games.
As well as that coveted Legends 3. 😭😭
@@Random_Geek_J I just say it now having mega man legends collection with legends 3 being the extra one be a great combo if you ask me
@@Random_Geek_J To be fair, with the exception of two of the X games, all of the games included in the Legacy Collections have been sprite based. Legends are 3D adventure games.
@@98953812 It isn't Legends 3, but there is an indie title called Delta Gal that's definitely trying its hardest to be a spiritual successor to Megaman Legends. I encourage anyone who likes these games to check it out. It's not finished but there is a demo you can play.
Still creating fans through sheer late-'90s competence, 24 years later. Seeing this game rank near the top of your list in one playthrough over two decades after it came out further solidifies my heartfelt opinion that Kattelox is one of the best places in all of vidya. Legends never die!
Too bad there was no option for revisit in 2. Nice pfp btw 😉
Legends will never die
When this dude's smiling, I'm smiling. I gotta protect this guy at all costs.
(*Metroid unknown item plays*)
Hopefully he's not out of Pepsi
@@AKidNamedHiggs Don't you mean Dr. Pepper?
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives Johnny used the unkown item sound when his brother told him they were out of Pepsi in the Metroid Zero Mission review. I used it in reference to Volnutt's fate for the past... HOLY SHIT TWENTY THREE YEARS!
Damn it tails doll what did you do this time?!?
Then we learn his voice actor did some of the worse crimes imaginable.
This game, to date, has one of my favorite aesthetics of any game. There's just something perfect about it's bright, blocky models and pixelated textures. It's almost Lego-like with how blocky everything is. They took the limitations of the time and instead of trying to achieve some impossible level of realism, they went all-in on style.
And man...I have played this game _so_ many times. I love it, it was one of the first 3D games I ever played and even today I can pick it up and dive right back in like no time has passed since I was in junior high. I do hope we get a Legends collection at some point, even if it is only 3 games. I've never played he Tron Bonne game, and I would love to play these games on my Switch.
So very glad to hear the positive experience with this game from you, John. Maybe after the next 2 games you'll know why having MML3 canceled was a huge blow to fans of this series. So many unanswered questions.
Honestly I'm surprised legends 3 didn't happen when the PS4 gen and Nintendo switch sales were so great due to the install base plus you can't tell us that Capcom isn't aware of the fan base.
It was an absolute tragedy 💔
MML holds a special place in my heart regardless. I'd absolutely buy a modern re-release in a heartbeat, whether it had MML3 or not.
Sadly Idk if we will ever see an ending to the story.. but I enjoyed what we got immensely.
@@brandonjenkins6381 honestly with how archaic the controls are, they're better off remade. Then ponder a L3 from there.
There is this thing in the Legends game about a "dark megaman", think of it as a karma system and that makes the npcs and even Roll to react to you in different ways. I'm not surprised that John didnt encounter much of it since he did played the game the most standard way for a first run (just like me back in the day). While this "karma" system is not that big of a deal on this game, the 2nd game (Legends 2) has much more attach to it and I do hope Johnny will see this comment at around a time before he starts Legends 2 and maybe starts thinking about it.
in legend 2; you can exploit the dark megaman thing by just kicking the pig on that island with the bird fortress xD
Mega Man Juno introduced me to Bach with his theme music, taught me some very neat words, and unnerved me by being very evil while remaining amiable and polite. He's one of my favorite villains, and it's a pity that he didn't get more screen time.
The art style of those games was so unique and expressive. Looking at them now and it all holds up pretty well.
Yeah, I definitely miss this sort of aesthetic in a game. It definitely has it's charm.
Considering how some classic franchises struggled, or even failed to make a good transition to 3D (see Mega Man X7), it's rather impressive how well Mega Man handled it on its first go. What makes it so impressive to me is how much Legends deviated from the established Mega Man formula, yet made it work beautifully That is not a small feat
I feel like a reimaging of this series with a larger open world map, sidequests, an expansive upgrade system and modern controls would be a banger.
Christ has it really been about 10 years? I remember coming home from school excited for the next part of yalls legends playthrough cause it was one of my favorite games when I was a kid.
Wait 10 years? Ain't no way
I knew about the Teisel VA thing beforehand so seeing you mention him being your favorite before mentioning That Thing had me experience every human emotion in the span of 3 seconds
*Me doing paperwork while this is playing*
Johnny:...I just gotta tune out that Tiesel's English VA was a convicted pedo.
Me: 😨...wait, WHAT!?
Yeah this is the first time I'm hearing of it and YIKES
Well if it’s any consolation, he’s not living anymore
Love the way they love, Data’s little dance, the old man bobbing occasionally when he speaks, the expressiveness
I always love it when John finds a new favorite where/when he least suspects it.
It's crazy to think that, thanks to the visual direction of the Legends games, they achieve the effect of cel-shaded 3D before the tech was really possible. I'm crossing my fingers that a revival of Legends is on Capcom's docket after they get through releasing the Battle Network Legacy Collection.
Hope the moving went smoothly, and that you're doing well John.
Nice to see John moving back home. My mans making big moves out here, and I’m here to fully support!!
Hope everything is okay since he's moving out of his GF's place..
@@mechashadow Oh, they didn’t move together..?
@@mechashadow I thought he lived with his brother Mark.
@@weirdstuffcorp8584 You're not wrong, that was the case before he moved out of state to move in with his GF instead. He is going back there so it might be a return to that status quo lol.
Anyone know why he's moving back?
15:57 its only now that im much older do I appreciate this. It's one of those little things you dont think about, but it's really so charming.
Man, I forgot how much I loved this game.
It's inresting that the Legends-series was originaly meant to be it's own continuity before it was retconed to take place at the end of the main universe. There's the canon timeline: The Classic-series ➡️ The X-series ➡️ the Zero-series ➡️ the ZX-series ➡️ the Legends-series
It’s a shame about the tank controls, but this game LOOKS fun. The aesthetic & lay out of these levels makes me wanna jump in! I especially like the design & animation for the enemy at @23:29
Check it out. The game never seems to ask you to do stuff with the controls that is that hard... Except the final race as Johnny said. Also don't sleep on the weapons, they can be insanely powerful and useful.
Especially the sword in Legends 2, which seems to do damage every frame or something crazy like that. Literally deleted a boss in less than 5 seconds with that thing, and it wasn't fully upgraded.
The controls are functional. But maybe it's because I've played this game for hundreds of hours so it's like second nature for me.
I was first introduced to you through the SGB mega man legends let’s play 10 years ago. It’s nice to see you finally play this yourself. This game is by far my favorite mega man game so I’m glad you enjoyed it. Stay safe out there Johnny.
I feel one of the caveats missing about Legends control scheme is that the game only came out a month after the Dualshock was released, so I imagine most of the game was developed without the intention of it needing analog controls.
Managed to snatch a copy for 20 bucks, even got me an old KB Toys receipt from it. While this game isn’t in my favorites anytime soon, it has a great cult following and I do feel like the Legends series could be revitalized. Like giving them Legacy Collections, remaking the original games or even just doing a sequel. It’s uncertain, but hopefully Capcom does more with Legends or Mega Man in general in the foreseeable future.
Carbons did have the cool thing of being apparently able to remove fleshy arms and change them to mechanical apparently without any kind of surgery :D
Great video as always!
I feel like the importance of carbons is that it's sort of like X's ideal future made realized, where there's no distinction between man and reploid (even more so than the zx era), and everyone is happily living their lives.
Also really important weird translation thing, megaman iirc in the Japanese version of the game is simply revered to as Rock Volnut (not even rockman). Because him being a megaman/rockman unit like Juno was supposed to be a bigger twist for the characters lol.
This is why I go into a brief section about the translation quirks in my review of it.
Knowing he's called Rock Volnutt in Japan would make his name origin make more sense too. Roll apparently named him after "a video game character that she liked" and in English the idea that a guardian would allow a child under his care to be called "Megaman" just because his granddaughter wanted it sound really goofy. Granted the name "Rock" still isn't the most normal, but it's not too far fetched in a world where people can be named Roll or Barrel.
@@randomnpc445 I could be mistaken, but I believe the part about him being named after a video game character was added in translation because Capcom's American branch didn't realize it was part of the same timeline.
Man, who would've thunk the Main Character, who looks like Megaman, was actually Megaman ALL this time?
(No seriously, that was suppose to be a twist?
Stuff with Juno, the Monkey Fella, and the Carbons was more of a Twist I wasn't expecting.)
@@Mekboy_ComputerMonster It's more complicated than that; "Rockman" in the game is used as a title rather than a name, and it's one that both Trigger and Juno share.
Speaking as someone who had to move recently, my sympathies go out to you. It’s a hassle both emotionally and physically
I couldn't stop laughing at 20:50 when Voulnut launches only to get rammed by a car twice. Comedy gold!
A Johnny video always feels like sitting down with a friend who wants to tell you about a game he found.
This game has great aesthetics! It's like cell shading 3D but with visible pixels. Very charming.
I'd like to see what could be done today in this style but with more polish, like what the pixel art/retro games community made in the past decade.
The models are a bit too blocky since it's the playstation 1, but it still holds up very well, especially the colors and the character designs. Some parts of the scenery remind me of point and click games.
I like how you actually title your moving boxes with what console they have in them
6:58 - I hope Ben isolates this for his sound board.
16:16 - In this subgate, Volnutt wonders how he's able to read these ancient letters. So he isn't exactly illiterate. It adds a mystery to Rock Volnutt, that there is more to him than just a 15-year-old "Blue Boy."
You are definitely correct though. We will get a Megaman Legends Collection, eventually.
I can't help it.
It's not a lack of literacy there at 15:58 that's making him sound stilted. It's the fact that he's reading ancient lettering, and he doesn't know why he can, as he states in the following cinematic.
It's actually incredibly well directed, and acted by a 14-year-old, really.
I hear talk that the Shining Laser special weapon in the game was created from MegaMan X's buster. I love it when there's little things like that to directly connect the various MegaMan series' because they're so rare.
Arguably the best aesthetics of any game, timeless, also a pretty big homage to Castle in the Sky, so much of the enemies and ruins designs are straight up from that movie.
I cannot believe he didn't mention the porno magazine you can find in the mall. That part always killed me.
I just played Legends 1 and Tron Bonne for the first time. These games just ooze charm and personality. Can't wait to see what you think about Tron and Legends 2!
I've been hyped to hear your thoughts on the Legends since like the time you looked at Network Transmission and briefly brought it up.
So many good memories with Legends, I remember watching the LP on SGB so long ago, happy to see the video.
nice pfp ;)
@@Nesenda Thanks. Yours is nice too.
On the plus side, Robert Norman Smith was also found dead floating in a lake, which is somehow fitting considering his voice work in this.
fun fact: in the PS1 version, you could kick the dogs and cats wandering around the island, and the more you did it, the darker megaman's armor would get. they took that out in the N64 version
I didn't know they took it out of the N64 version. I mean I understand why because it was a remnant of a morality system that was never implemented hence why you can lie about your name.
This video is very nostalgic for me, personally. The SGB Mega Man Legends playthrough is what introduced me to Johnny, Matt, and Elliot and lead me to this channel and later BSC.
fun fact: the Japanese voice actress of mega man vollnut voiced Monkey D. Luffy from one piece, Krillen from dragon ball, and jynx in Pokemon anime series in Japanese.
It matters that they're artificial because they can literally plug robot parts into themselves and they'll work perfectly. They're extremely advanced reploids
I forget where I read this, but I remember reading that the difference between Carbons and normal humans is that Carbons have a much easier time augmenting themselves with cybernetic implants- in fact, Mega Man's blue armor is literally a separate equippable body!
...which does lead to some unsettling implications about how all that works behind the scenes but that's neither here nor there.
Is Lewis still one of John's editors? The editor's notes feel like I'm watching a segment of Brainscratch. The informative anecdote of Legends 1 released before Ocarina of Time introduced the Z-Target system carries Lewis vibes for me.
Whoever they are, it's nice to see a touch of personality in the editing style in John's videos more often. Always loved touches like that, gives more character to the video to compliment John's hosting. Personable editors are kinda like co-hosts in a way.
One thing you didn't touch on, which I don't blame you because it's not obvious at all, is that this game has a morality system in it. Being a jerk to people in dialogue as well as some other actions will tint Volnutt's armor darker, and alter some NPC dialogue about him. It's not all that consequential though, and being a good person doesn't really do anything, so it's easy to miss and not really an important part of the game.
I had that ball kicking mini game down to a science! You don't move at all because centering yourself is not possible. If you kick the ball just before it stops in front of you it'll shoot off to the right and if you time it right you can hit the dog when it's on the right side. You gotta keep kicking the ball even when it won't hit so you can get the dogball sooner.
My biggest impossible dream is still a Capcom remake of those games. Not just a collection but a clean full fledged remake in that spiffy RE Engine
12:02
Ohhhh Johnny..... oooooooohh Johnny 😭
So if John’s moving back, is Nora going back with him?
15:59 lol he's supposed to be reading ancient letters, hence why he's having difficulty on that part.
Really nice timing with a Legends-like game 'Protodroid Delta' coming out in april, really excited for that tho I haven't played the legends games myself either, only seen playthroughs.
Teisel's VA, Rob Smith, passed away on July 25th, 2020.
Johnny probably knew, but I sure didn't until looking him up.
Strafing is most definitely a technique you want to master for this game. It's *very* effective in taking down most bosses and strong enemies. Also, no word about how Roll can run you over when she's trying to ram that gate? :D Also, yes, the zenny (money) in this game evaporates fairly quickly, which is why once I get the vacuum arm and upgrade it completely, it's the thing I take with me most often until I don't need money anymore. It's great for collecting zenny and health pellets.
I love the Legends series. It's a shame we never got a proper third game (second sequel, that is). I never got a chance to play The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, but I understand it's more of a prequel to the Legends games. I would absolutely love for Capcom to release these in a collection for modern consoles. I don't have a PlayStation 3, so I can't buy any of them digitally.
23:40 It's a good thing Legends 2 came out by the time the dual shock was introduced, because now we got twin stick
I like both games, but I always thought that it kind of sucked that the drill was always necessary to get hidden stuff. It made me not want to use any other secondary item because I didn't want to have to go back to all of those levels again. I wish that you could choose 2 secondary weapons.
I was figured that the Bonne family was pronounced "Bone" because Tron Bonne could be like Trombone
3:10 “They went from Megaman 8 to Megaman 64; where’d the other 56 games go?”
4:33 I think R. Pika might know the answer to that…
I'm a huge Megaman fan and have always been obsessed with the legend series upon there release and own all 3. I found this channel in hopes that one day you would review this and it finally happened, great video man.
I struggle to find decent videos about one of my favorite games and series (Legends series), so I'm grateful this exists. The themes and tone this game evokes are for me are one of a kind, a lost ancient and advanced civilization, that cozy feeling, their fare share of mysteries, the Saturday morning feel, I think only skies of arcadia. I love this game in spite of it's flaws
One of my favorite games so glad you enjoyed it! The game is just oozing with charm I love helping all the citizens out with their problems. Being able to spend money to repair damaged buildings was such a nice touch and really helps the player create a strong connection with the island. I was always invested in the different happenings and genuinely wanted to help more because I enjoyed it over the potential rewards. Just a chill and pleasant game to play
While I prefer the looks without the helmet, it actually protects from the heavy knockback if you fall down head first.
Legends is my true MegaMan. I absolutely love the story and lore. The second game really ups the story and lore and makes a lot of improvements over the first. This is a yearly playthrough for me.
Hopefully you enjoy Misadventures and Legends 2.
Misadventures is really fun, but entirely different. Legends 2 will be return to form.
I love SO MUCH about this game. I just replayed it recently. I thought the art direction was excellent and I genuinely LIKE the voice acting outside of the opening crawl. The tank controls are easily the worst part of this game and I hope those will be adjusted for a remake. I can't wait to play Mega Man Legends 2
Man, I love this game. I remember beating it on PS2 after losing my PS1 memory card. Kicking you back to the main menu for dying in this game was brutal, but made for a fun challenge. I need to go pick up the other two games, I need more Bonne family shenanigans. Glad to see people still agree it holds up well!
Of all the 2-D MegaMan games that came out this year. Legends should get the same treatment as well, cause I like to play these games.
I loved this game SO MUCH. Also the control issues were pretty well resolved in MML2, IMO!
One thing to bring up is that this game does have alternate difficulty modes!
HARD MODE- Beat the game to unlock, appears at title menu. Enemies have more health, Mega Man takes more damage, and sections like the Flutter and Boat have less health for the vehicle.
EASY MODE- Beat the game on Hard OR Beat the game on Normal in under 3 hours. Mega Man starts out with the Jet Skates in his inventory and a part that maxes out all Buster Stats. Enemies deal less damage, take more damage, and most importantly, the value of Zenny dropped by enemies is increased by times FOUR. This alone is why I play the game on Easy Mode, speeds a large chunk of grinding. I usually don't bother with the max part out of fairness and wait until the normal unlock point for Jet Skates to play as close to Normal as I can.
The thing that sucks is the unlock of these difficulties isn't saved, you lose access when you turn off the console. This can be easily gotten around by having a save just before the final boss in a file where you'd unlock either or by beating it, then starting a new game on the difficulty you want.
In my case, I hooked up a PS1 and GameShark to set the game clock on my Normal File to 00:00:00 so I could unlock easy mode without going through HARD or speedrunning.
I've used the Servbot as my avatar for as long as I can remember!!
13:03 To think that Johnny said "F*** Volnutt. There, I said it." During Brain Scratch Commentaries's The Subspace Emissary commentary.
19:57 that put a lovely smile on my face. God bless you Johnny!
I remember fully upgrading the laser and being able to hit the moon. And also becoming evil mega man by kicking that can.
Thanks for the new video, my father just passed, and your someone I watch that puts a smile on my face
I love that Megaman Volnutt is in Tatsunoko vs Capcom
I hope you do the Battle Network series when the collection comes out. You rarely mention it like it never exists lol.
WOW that shit about Tiesel's VA came out of nowhere jesus christ that's unfortunate
Rob Smith, in 2008, plead guilty to two charges of possession and one charge of distribution of cp. Sentenced to 20 months imprisonment, he never acted again.
Fast forward to June 2020, almost a decade later. He received additional charges: 3 more counts of possession, 2 more counts of distribution. One month later, his body was found in a lake after he was reported missing three days earlier. No foul play suspected.
The Legends series is the only Mega Man series that I haven't played yet. I tried it for a couple of hours but got distracted by other things to keep going. I'm personally waiting for the eventual Legends Legacy Collection since it and Star Force are the only series that haven't gotten collections yet.
Really cool to see some content on Legends. Mega Man Legends is outright my favorite game of all time. There's a weird part of me that almost wishes it wasn't "Mega Man" so that it could have been its own franchise.
I remember playing this game when I was 12-13 and beating it multiple times on my original Playstation. As someone who only played the NES Mega Man games (excluding 1 and 3) and Mega Man X, and who'd never played an RPG before, this game blew my mind. I got so absorbed in exploring Kattlelox Island. To this day, I don't think I've ever seen a world in a game with such a perfect balance of exploration, secrets, interactivity, cause/effect, and everything else. I loved kicking the can into the garbage bin, kicking the dog (HA!), and getting into places I didn't know I otherwise could (like finding the Bonnes hiding out in Old Town before the game officially reveals it).
Shame on Capcom for not giving us Mega Man Legends 3. It's been FOUR console generations and over 20 years since the end of Mega Man Legends 2. If Nintendo can finally give us Metroid Dread, then Capcom can give us MML3.
Nice little detail you may not have noticed in-game is if you repeatedly kick that can into the bakery eventually Megamans armor gets darker and darker since its considered a "bad" act to do. I don't remember how you lighten it back up though
11:26 describing Pokemon Scarlet and Violets plot to someone
16:47 "Ah shit, here we go again."
Tron Bonne aka the most awkward femme fatale ever
Johnny: that was ten years ago
Me, remembering watching that let's play like it was yesterday: *spits out coffee*
I’d be down for remakes of the Legends Duology and Tron’s game in the vein of Crash and Spyro’s remakes. Hell they should’ve remade the first two Legends games for 3DS before going to do Legends 3.
Also if we ever get a another chance at Legends 3, I wouldn’t mind seeing them use the ideas in the canned version
Shout-out to Behind the Voice actor website for being the best vo info database.
Really impressive and kinda understated how well Capcom managed to pull off a 3d transition with almost no template for go off of. Unfortunate that they couldn't follow that up in later console generations as well
Love how I just beat this game again on my modded vita about a week and half before you posted this
16:50 oh well i just found this out today. WELP
Personally this is my favorite MegaMan sub series. It’s got so much charm, and the visuals are still probably my favorite in a game as far as early 3D era stuff goes. X got me into the series, Legends cemented being a fan of it.
Here’s hoping someday we can relive the adventures of the blue bomber, Hippopotamus Trigger, in some HD collection… and maybe even revive Legends 3… probably not but hey I can hope dammit.
Volnutt’s most defining visual feature is not wearing the iconic helmet
I picked up this game for the second time; playing it this time around is different compare to my childhood days of playing megaman legends. Most of the nostalgia I've had for this game disappeared although some remains. I suppose it has something to do with where we are in the gaming universe. Games nowadays allow the audience to explore big adventures, something we've never had in the 90s nearing the 2000s with such beautiful mapping design. It is however true that famous game developers will most likely not consider in bringing entries to games like these anymore. In conclusion I will forever love this game, but I am fine with playing it once in a while.
Man I miss Matt. I hope he is well. I am glad to see you trucking along too Johnny.
16:50 So that's why we'll probably never get a Mega Man Legends Collection
I first got introduced to the Blue Bomber with the original X collection, but this is still the only Mega Man game I’ve ever beat. The SGB playthrough and Clement’s LP got me into it. Best characters, charm, the character designs, the gameplay, LOVE this game. I’d love to play Legends 2…..if it didn’t cost so much
I remember getting the maxed out grenade launcher thing and then being invincible pretty much.
