What thing I really enjoy about FF5, besides its very charming, and wholesome characters, would easily be how easy it is to break. FF5, due to the insane job and ability customization, can go from really hard to laughably easy or vice versa. The player has so much potential for subsquent play throughs and challenge runs Most JRPGs often do have really broken stuff in them that can make the game's challenge swiss cheese, but FF5 turns that up to 11, and I really like it for that
Check out Bravely Default. The job system is even crazier when broken if you can believe that. Plus the battle system by itself is completely is capable of being broken. These two combined make it possible to beat the final boss and the super bosses with mo damage. Bracely Second is even more insane.
@@bensell982 I'd argue Default is a bit more broken than Second, mainly because Hasten world and stillness makes most of the work in terms of breaking the game, barring jumping onto monster type enemies with a high enough speed stat (which isn't too hard to setup for any non-super bosses which requires a bit more work), where hasten world got heavily nerfed, as well as stillness in Second (albeit they overlooked how busted ghost status actually is with a decent magic user and free mp in a pinch). Then Default 2 came around the corner and the developers just threw the fun police out the window and said; "Enjoy the show fellas"
@@bensell982 that is certainly one option in ghost state, especially since it won't cost you any mp, you can get a free 20% or so boost from full charge

While I do love your sonic and Metroid revisit marathon, I’ve been waiting your final fantasy retrospective to return and now it’s finally here. Thank you so much John and I’m really looking forward to your 6 and 7 reviews coming up 😭
As someone that fell into the FF14 whirlpool and never got out... I recognized some of the monsters in the footage immediately. It's honestly amazing how that game took everything from previous games and made a cohesive whole out of all of it.
I love this game, it is a blast to break. So many possibilities! So much experimenting! And I can't wait to play at least 2 more Fiesta runs this year.
I'm just glad that Johnny brought up the Moogles when they were introduced in Final Fantasy III. Also, I'm surprised that he named the main character Butz and not Bartz. Another thing, in the game, Mid is Cid's grandson. Something else to add, Gogo would appear again in Final Fantasy VI as an optional party member.
That OVA of Final Fantasy from the 90s looked so awesome, kinda wished we got more of that and NOT the Final Fantasy Unlimited anime that we got during the 2000s instead.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one with how indifferent I often am to job systems in games (or I guess just games where you're more or less thrown a party blank slates to fully customize however you see fit). I still probably prefer VI over it, but from the classic lineup, I'd still probably consider V the most solid overall.
3:10 - Good guess. The font suckage has to do with Apple's restrictions on what fonts you're allowed to use for App Store games. The other versions keep this font as a holdover because Square wants all versions of the game to be identical. It's lame. But at least the PC version's so damn easy to mod that it hardly matters. - Lewis
Looking back this is quickly becoming my favorite classic Final Fantasy. It's the one I think deserves the remake so they can sharpen out the writing and characterization.
After III and IV got DS remakes I always hoped this game would get the same treatment for the DS or 3DS but it never happened. I believe though since we have near unlimited time that in spite of the Pixel Remasters a 3D remake may one day be possible. Also if there is a 3D remake, do what III did and have the Job clothes in the overworld.
Final fantasy 5 is always a good time, playing it always brings a smile to my face. It's not the best or most dramatic/moving game. But it's one of the few games that just makes you happy to play imo
Fun fact. Tetsuya Takahashi and his eventual wife, Kaori Tanaka (better known by her pen name, Soraya Saga) both worked on this game as part of the field graphic and map designer teams respectively. After also working on Final Fantasy VI, they also wrote a script for Final Fantasy VII that was considered too dark and said script was used as the basis for the game, Xenogears. And then of course, they left Square to found Monolith Soft and that's how we eventually got Xenogears and then the Nintendo acquisition with Xenoblade Chronicles and other Monolith Soft properties and also support development work on other in-house Nintendo projects like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I will just say that I am happy with how things turned out for Final Fantasy VII's production. Both for the Final Fantasy series and the new Xeno series. I loved both FFVII and Xenogears, so I'm glad both scripts were allowed to exist even though there were sadly problems with the latter's production that affected the final product. Anyway, loved this Johnny VS. video of Final Fantasy V. Can't wait to see your video for FFVI next. Excited for your videos for this year outside of the current Final Fantasy marathon as well. :)

Happy 30th Anniversary to Final Fantasy V! Fun Fact: Final Fantasy V, Megaman 5 and Dragon Quest V all released in the same year, back when Square, Capcom and Enix were pumping out sequels back to back. Here’s My Review of Final Fantasy V Definitely that odd underrated game that’s overshadowed by FF4 and FF6 but it’s my personal 3rd Favorite since it’s the peak of the Job System. I love it for it’s lighthearted moods and silly humor. However this game has it’s serious moments and it’s even the first to include optional Superbosses such as Omega and Shinryu if I remember correctly. This is also the first game where almost all of the cast is female excluding Bartz and Galuf. The thing I love this most is each character having a unique sprite for a specific job and as a lover of old school classic games I appreciate the hardwork Square did drawing each unique sprite for specific jobs. Do I think Square should’ve released it despite the “complicated job mechanics” Yes because lots of games back in the days were hard and the game clearly explains the jobs system when you receive the first jobs and in the first town.
Man I only recently played through this game and I adored it. I'm glad this job system still lives on in Bravely Default and even now going back to it, there's very little that's aged poorly in comparison. It's one of the 1st times Final Fantasy really grabbed me with how fun it is. This game and the FF video marathon in general has gotten to give the series more of a chance finally.
Little note: Butz being afraid of heights does make a touching return when he, enveloped in rage, flies the airship around the world while screaming. He was so angry he overturned his fear of heights on a dime, which I can see people missing, and I thought that was a nice touch, even if it doesn’t have a BIGGER plot significance. But also thinking back on RPGs, this was back when non-important side traits to characters would be saved for manuals or omitted directly, so props to old Square for adding little personality quirks at no direct gain. Also, when I first won the game, only Krile was KOd, so she’s the one who stayed behind, and after all the pain she goes through with Galuf, I felt so bad but I thought it was fitting. I didn’t know it was my fault for mot reviving her, I thought it was forced plot. A month later I replayed the final fight and Lenna and Krile were KOd and realized the ending changed. It still blows my mind because Final Fantasy has yet to do something similar as far as I know.
My first introduction to Final Fantasy was the 5th thanks to a video that spliced a part of a compilation of fan made music in NND that had a mashup of FF5's battle theme and Cirno's Theme from Touhou. Loved the soundfont so much, I found out that it came from FF5, and started playing the game and the series onward. (Just realized that was my intro to Touhou as well, so that's awesome)
FF5 is one of my personal Favorites alongside 8,12 Zodiac Age version and Tactics War of the Lions 5 as I always saw it was a Saturday morning cartoon jrpg Also my favorte jobs are Freelancer, Summoner, Ninja, Blue Mage, Mime(basicly Freelancer but better designed for spell casters), and the GBA classes of Gladiator and Oracle
So excited for the FFVI video! Wanted to try that game after beating FF7 a while back to see why it's a fan favorite. I should probably go in blind, but your reviews make me want to try out the game after seeing what it's about.
I'm just excited for him to review VI, IMO still the best game in the series, though tbh I could never really get into VII (non remake), IX, or X, just felt like they lacked that feeling of freedom for me.
Bartz' name being Butz in Japan isn't exactly accurate. Bartz' name in Japanese is バッツ, which can be read as "Battsu." Butz is an alternate translation that can come from that "Battsu" reading, but that reading is how you would say the name Bartz in Japanese.
I remember 5 quite well and the job system is what made the game easier or harder. I haven't played it in a while but I recall just about every boss encounter had a method of breaking it. For example the bird boss? Switch everyone to ninja and throw shurikens, dies in seconds.
Johnny; as a loyal follower of yours for years and years, I must say I am excited for you to review Final Fantasy X. On another note. Your lookin in damn great shape fam. 🤙
I'm playing this right now as my first Final Fantasy game and so far having a good time with it. I wonder why people don't talk about it. Underated or does it end on a bad note?
Underrated due to its release in the US being so much later, and it's more gameplay than a big narrative entry, which I also find lends to less talk outside people who have already played it.
With the FF series 6,7,9, and maybe 10 are the normal JRPGs that really get the love and attention. Meanwhile, it is FF13 that often gets all the hate. So FF5 can often be lost in popular fan discussion
Essentially... Fan favourites: FF6, FF7, FF9 and FF10. Squenix's favourites: FF1, FF4, FF8 and FF15. MMOs: FF11 and FF14. Underappreciated: FF3, FF5 and FF12. Black chocobos: FF2 and FF13.
gotta love it when a youtuber you love just so happens to upload a video you've been hyped for on your birthday :D vs. Final Fantasy series carries on, babyyy
My Personal favorite Final Fantasy game. I have to agree with Johnny on the gba version being the best version. Not for the added jobs or post game content, btw only one of the new jobs is post game exclusive, but rather for a glitch that makes leveling up jobs a complete non issue. It's been nicknamed the Mover Quicksave glitch though it works with other enemy types as well Mivers are just the most famous ones with it. Little explanation. In the final dungeon there's a very rare enemy spawn called Movers. On a normal playthrough your pretty unlikely find them in a normal playthrough and are very comparable to Metal Slimes in Dragon Quest in that if you manage to defeat them you get a crap ton of money and a lot of job points no exp though. How the glitch works is after reloading a quicksave random encounters are scripted for awhile. Whether it's for a certain number of encounters or until you leave the room I'm not sure, but it's not important. What's important is the second encounter in the final dungeon will be Movers. Through using this glitch maxing out every job will only take around an hour.
Love that exploit. I've been playing through the SNES version and the RNG there seems a bit exploitable too. I've noticed whenever you do a hard reset and load a game, you're more likely to encounter the rarest encounter in your first few battles. It isn't a guaranteed thing like in the GBA release, but you learn to use it to your advantage with save states and the like.
2:25 I feel like I'm being called out. I just bought the pixel remasters this past weekend. Even got a Bluetooth adapter for my computer so I could connect my Switch NES controller and play the first three games with it when... I can probably do that if they released them on the Switch anyway.
I just realised that 2022 has a lot of an anniversaries for the Final Fantasy series the Series is 35 years old this year and FF5 turns 30 and FF7 turns 25 and Crisis Core turns 15 hell even Kingdom Hearts turns 20. Can't wait to see what Square Enix shows off this year.
I'm convinced the "font rage" was manufactured. The font didn't even strike me as off until I started seeing the complaints, and even after that, it didn't bother me in the slightest. People just wanted something to be mad about.
I love the way this game handles the Freelancer job by giving it the best stats and innate abilities of every job you've mastered, plus giving you an extra ability slot. It really allows you to become the culmination of everything you've mastered during your adventure. Compare this to the Bravely games, which still has the effect of "freelancers eventually become an ultimate final job" but it makes zero difference which jobs you master, and freelancers have their own skill set that takes up a slot whether you want it to or not. It's just not quite as satisfying.
This makes me want to play the pixel remaster version. I first played it using the anthology version on the PSP (I played I - IX on that thing) and yeah, wasn't too hot on it back then. Probably pick it up next time they're on sale.

I own the PlayStation version...mainly because it was the only way I could get Final Fantasy VI on PlayStation.
I've built up a rather respectable PlayStation library, all things considered.
@@jaretco6423
Well, I'm sure you're aware by now, but they're here if you got a Nintendo Switch or PS4 👍
Xbox got screwed over which is kind of expected but still :(
Did John ever explained the Gil Toss like he promised?
I thought the Remasters looked awful before, but this is looking a lot nicer in motion! I dig the special effects on display
What thing I really enjoy about FF5, besides its very charming, and wholesome characters, would easily be how easy it is to break. FF5, due to the insane job and ability customization, can go from really hard to laughably easy or vice versa. The player has so much potential for subsquent play throughs and challenge runs
Most JRPGs often do have really broken stuff in them that can make the game's challenge swiss cheese, but FF5 turns that up to 11, and I really like it for that
Check out Bravely Default.
@@rpglover5955 Meteor Rain.
@@bensell982 that is certainly one option in ghost state, especially since it won't cost you any mp, you can get a free 20% or so boost from full charge
surprised you didn't mention blue mage, its one of my favorite jobs in the game, also didn't realize how many of the bosses used in this game that were brought back in XIV.
While I do love your sonic and Metroid revisit marathon, I’ve been waiting your final fantasy retrospective to return and now it’s finally here.
Thank you so much John and I’m really looking forward to your 6 and 7 reviews coming up 😭
Good to know I wasn't the only one bothered by the Chocobo theme going Eww
The "Y Burn" translation is pretty fucking funny, though.
Final Fantasy V was just a really great game overall.
However, the only version i've played is the pixel remaster but I loved it anyways.
You're in for a trip with FF6!
As someone that fell into the FF14 whirlpool and never got out... I recognized some of the monsters in the footage immediately. It's honestly amazing how that game took everything from previous games and made a cohesive whole out of all of it.
That's pretty much the entirety of XIV.
The whole game is a love letter to the series.
@@Gonkers20XX As well as including a huge chunk of original content and concepts for itself
The first Vs. video of 2022 and it is great. Nice work Johnny! I'm looking forward to what else you release this year.
Well, I didn't expect the FF marathon to resume so soon. On the day I was re-watching them no less.
The Sonic 06 review is sweating buckets rn. Its getting close to being dethroned as the longest one.
22:02 now that's what i call a perfect build up in wordplay LMAO 😂😂
This is one of the classic Final Fantasies that made the strongest lasting impression on me. I find myself coming back to this more than 4 and 6.

Bravely Default 1 e 2 literally are remake of FF 5. I suggest to play them.
What's up my guy! Thanks for the credit
Final fantasy 5 is always a good time, playing it always brings a smile to my face. It's not the best or most dramatic/moving game. But it's one of the few games that just makes you happy to play imo
I literally spit out my drink at the OVA scene with the glowing ass. That shit is hilarious.
Been feeling bad as of late and here comes a johnny vid to brighten my day.
God bless dude
@@NeverSaySandwich1 Thank you. Likewise.
I had a dumb fucking grin seeing Johnny's art, it feels like ages it's been seen on the channel
Wasn't convinced about Pixel Remasters since I spent so long going through them in the past but after seeing the music got redone? Just might- though, still working through another FF before I can get the remasters; ever looking forward to the FF series for ya John
Can't. Wait. For. XIV.
After a long day at work, it's nice to unwind with a good RUclips video. Imagine my excitement when I got the notification that a SomecallmeJohnny video was revealed as uploaded. I Jumped for joy even though I was exhausted!
I am dead serious right now, I was re-watching the review of Final Fantasy 1 Right now because I was bored of waiting for the Final Fantasy 5 Review and behold you just uploaded it, seriously what a weird coincidence, and hey I'm not complaining.
I do remember Flash. And I miss it so...
This video was on point. Great editing. Fantastic Humor. Well paced and informative. Thanks again Johnny
Welcome to 2022 Johnny. We're glad you're here. Oh look Johnny first versus video of the year.
Happy 30th Anniversary to Final Fantasy V! Fun Fact: Final Fantasy V, Megaman 5 and Dragon Quest V all released in the same year, back when Square, Capcom and Enix were pumping out sequels back to back.
Here’s My Review of Final Fantasy V
Definitely that odd underrated game that’s overshadowed by FF4 and FF6 but it’s my personal 3rd Favorite since it’s the peak of the Job System.
Speaking of anniversaries, Street Fighter is 35 years old...according to the Spirit Event going on in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate right now.
As Projared would say " It isn't underrated. It's more like overlooked than underrated. ".
Lets accept this is the closest we are going to get to a FF remake that is not 7 because god forbid people discover 7 isn't the only ff game.
The Void. Now that's an interesting place
god, it always feels good to watch a new episode from johnny
Can not wait for 6 7 8 10 an 13-15 John when you react to those it will be amazing
Love to see Mystic knight get love. Would love to see spellblade return as an ability in another final fantasy game.
Bartz is canonically luckiest FF protag cause man gone on an adventure with 3 girls and a ghost to himself.
As someone who loves pixel art these remasters are actually perfect.
My favorite Final Fantasy. Has a great job/ability system, fun battles, loads of fun, great soundtrack.
This is actually my very first FF game (the gba remake)
The Warriors of Dawn Theme is an absolute banger.
2:31 You definitely weren’t wrong. And you betcha I’m buying these remasters on my PS5 because I need those 4K pixels.
FF5 is one of my personal Favorites alongside 8,12 Zodiac Age version and Tactics War of the Lions
5 as I always saw it was a Saturday morning cartoon jrpg
Also my favorte jobs are Freelancer, Summoner, Ninja, Blue Mage, Mime(basicly Freelancer but better designed for spell casters), and the GBA classes of Gladiator and Oracle
So excited for the FFVI video! Wanted to try that game after beating FF7 a while back to see why it's a fan favorite. I should probably go in blind, but your reviews make me want to try out the game after seeing what it's about.
Ike Eveland just shouted you out, I came and subscribed on his reccomendation!
Did Johnny ever explain Gil Toss? We can probably guess what it is, but he said he’d go more into later and I didn’t hear a goddamn thing.
knowing that Johnny will soon be diving into ff8 makes me happy
>Exdeath is a tree
Oh so he's like the Metarex from Sonic X, but magic instead of anime sci-fi tech.
I'm just excited for him to review VI, IMO still the best game in the series, though tbh I could never really get into VII (non remake), IX, or X, just felt like they lacked that feeling of freedom for me.
Bartz' name being Butz in Japan isn't exactly accurate. Bartz' name in Japanese is バッツ, which can be read as "Battsu." Butz is an alternate translation that can come from that "Battsu" reading, but that reading is how you would say the name Bartz in Japanese.
this is my absolute favorite in the franchise, im so excited to hear your opinions on it!
"Remember Flash?"
You really wanna hurt me today, huh?
i love how gilgamesh is as goofy in final fantasy as he is in his own epic
I remember 5 quite well and the job system is what made the game easier or harder. I haven't played it in a while but I recall just about every boss encounter had a method of breaking it. For example the bird boss? Switch everyone to ninja and throw shurikens, dies in seconds.
"Remember Hot Wings?"
Yeah. I remember that and Flash.
When he said "remember flash?" I cried.
Johnny; as a loyal follower of yours for years and years, I must say I am excited for you to review Final Fantasy X. On another note. Your lookin in damn great shape fam. 🤙
14:27 I finally understand that Exdeath joke in your Big Rigs video.
I'm playing this right now as my first Final Fantasy game and so far having a good time with it. I wonder why people don't talk about it. Underated or does it end on a bad note?
Underrated. 7 kinda eats most people's attention.
@@DarkDodgers And IV and VI...IX and X as well. Maybe VIII or the XIII trilogy if you're feeling experimental.
10:56 “Butz will never not be funny and I am internally nine years old.” Same John, same. 😂
Surprised you're going straight into Final Fantasy VI. I was thinking you would just wait for the Pixel Remaster since it's only a month away anyway.
The thing i love most about FFV is how the freelancer class become stronger as the jobs are mastered.
gotta love it when a youtuber you love just so happens to upload a video you've been hyped for on your birthday :D
vs.
That part where you mentioned the ova and the beam coming out of someone's ass was top notch comedy
i think this is one of the most underrated final fantasy games out there
I say more liked overlooked.
"Remember Flash?"
Thanks Johnny I needed my daily dose of feeling old
Welcome to my world, child.
Street Fighter is 35 too. What are the odds?
I'm convinced the "font rage" was manufactured.
The font didn't even strike me as off until I started seeing the complaints, and even after that, it didn't bother me in the slightest.
People just wanted something to be mad about.
Johnny: Whatever you do, avoid the Anthology version.
Me who already bought the Anthology version: *Sad pirate noises*
16:30 Fun Grandpa and Racist Grandpa are not mutually exclusive traits, one can be both.
You know, as long as "they" arent around.
BRO!
Finally!
I waited so long for you to cover my FAVORITE Final Fantasy game.
It took so much restraint to not ask where this video was as I tried very hard not to be a toxic fan. :D thank you for covering this one.
MY FAVERATE...minus tactics..LOVE THE JOB SYSTEM
