This is the 300th episode of Hot Ones! Thanks for all your support-here's to the next 300!
congrats!
Woah, that's an awesome milestone! Thanks for giving us 300 celebrities enduring the gauntlet!
Here here!
your welcome
Grats buddy
For a guy that looks like he only eats saltine crackers he handled those spices very well
😂😂😂
Cocaine’s a helluva drug.
He was loving the high. He is going to be downing those sauces once he gets home.
It's having been locked in the closet for 28 years while eating them. Must have both in order to unlock the super power.
He's an Asian American woman, of course he can take some spice
"You didnt ask me anything I've ever been asked before." the ultimate compliment. Well done team. Great guest great episode.
That’s going in the next compilation.
Such a Nardwuar level compliment. And now I'm just thinking about if Nardwuar was on Hot Ones
@@TheOnyxSpy I NEED that to happen
Was looking for this! Makes me so happy to hear that from people, Sean and team are the best 🎉
@@TheOnyxSpypwH
"You didn't ask me anything that I've ever been asked before." Wow. Even when you come to expect praise to Sean and his team for their thoughtful questions and scrupulous research, this compliment stands out. Respect.
My thoughts exactly. This must be the best compliment you can get as an interviewer.
There were also other moments you could tell he was impressed. If you jump to about 7:19, just the look he gives when asked.
I like his questions but his demeanor, cadence and delivery is always so robotic.
@@jamesonketchum4231 Gotta remember he's eating the spicy wings too. I'm sure he has to memorize the questions because it can be hard to read when you are in that state. He's probably trying his best to get the questions out correctly more than anything.
Yeah that's something to be proud of
He felt like a supervillain when he took the hottest wings then calmly explained why they weren’t very good
Fr 😂
John was talking to Sean as if he’d tied him to a chair and was explaining his motive for evil
Imagine after the strike studios cast Mulaney as the next Bond villain. 😂😂😂
Well he is Jack Horner..
Also the line of "It's funnier when the joke doesn't land, because they trusted you!" is absolutely villainous. Man is chaotic.
Did not expect John to be one of the calmest guests on this show. Man he handled those wings like a champ!
I have had the Last Dab, it was intense but not unbearable!
I have not had Da Bomb. That could be different!
lol he has abused his body a lot, kinda makes sense
@@glenncurley680da bomb is way worse than the last dab. Trust me lol
@@glenncurley680I did this once and did an extra dab of every sauce up until and including da bomb. Feeling of immediate regret and my body went numb briefly. I’ve had the last dab many times since. Da bomb is sitting in my fridge and hasn’t been opened since
Hot sauce is nothing on the adrenaline compared to the drugs he'd done in the past. Relatively speaking.
This man handled these wings like no one else on the show, didn’t take a sip of water or milk, didn’t cough or freak out, just tanked it. I know he’s done some wild things in life but to have a tolerance like THAT is crazy
Which made the interview kinda boring tbh. I like when celebrities suffer on Hot Ones
Yeah, and the weird thing is he doesn't seem like the type to build a tolerance for anything
Tommy Chong did the same a few seasons back. Man was unfazed
@@jg2722 You are probably young, if what you want out of an interview, which the point is to ask and answer questions, is for them to instead just suffer from spicy foods lol that's a side part of the show the main part is supposed to be the interview questions and the answers to said questions
Henry Rollins was the same back in the day.
You can tell that Sean is a big John Mulaney fan. It's so cute, he just giggled his way through this entire interview
i thought so too. It made me smile a bit more
Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't consciously realize it in the moment, but you're so right. It's friggin adorable. (And the exact reason I couldn't do Sean's job, I'd giggle waaaay too much haha)
Have you ever seen Sean do less though? It’s his job
@@erinbyrnes8917 He never usually giggles like that, always engaged and enthusiastic but usually very composed
John Mulaney is just naturally funny and I would imagine it would be hard not to laugh through this.
Didn't even give da bomb the satisfaction of struggling, just called it trash. Dude's a menace
“Very funny when it doesn’t work. Can you imagine? Because they trusted you” really got me, he’s so effortlessly funny
It's amazing that some people don't even have to do anything to be funny. They just have to say what they think unfiltered and people find it funny.
😂😂😂😂
Good way to put it. So many times in the episode you could just see him get this smirk on his face as he just like naturally was coming up with a bit on the spot with things like his taste buds coming to a consensus.
@@Mediadosthis is all comedians
Like James Corden and his writers lol
“You didn’t ask me anything I’ve ever been asked before” is honestly such high praise! Well done
This! And it makes you wonder just how boring and similiar other talk shows must be like to have said that.
I wonder if Sean will ever get to interview Nardwuar.
@@gold.michael this is the one that needs to happen lol
@@gold.michael haha battle of the interviewers!
@@kaoskongoyeah you can only imagine the amount of times they think to themselves "Oh this question again...."
I have to say, he’s so much more funny, confident, and just down right authentic when he’s sober. It takes true strength to be in the spotlight and recover. I don’t know if I’d be able to do it.
Same thing happened to Tyler Childers. He may have changed his sound a tad but man if he isn’t the most authentic he’s ever been.
I feel like his timing is so much better, too. He seems more relaxed and laid back, and it really adds to the humor.
It's a balance of both experiences. He visited himself way down low, to learn and appreciate rising high.
Tbh, I never would've thought he took drug one, even way back, and I've enjoyed his specials regardless- but he always seemed very straight edge to me
Most people can't even just recover.
It's a real testament to how naturally funny and charming John is that its such a great episode even though he barely reacted to the sauces. As I saw someone else mention, it's also kind of scary to realize how good he is at masking any discomfort or pain. I hope John stays strong in his sobriety. It was good to see Sean have such a relaxed and nice time with him.
You're right. It occurs to me that Robin Williams, who was also fantastic at masking pain apparently, would have probably been excellent at playing off the experience like his mouth wasn't on fire and that thought hit me like a hammer to the stomach.
I don't think I've ever heard Sean laugh like that. John is so effortlessly disarming. He has such a talent for comedy. I hope he continues to be well and recover. He's still my favorite comedian--no one even comes close
@@repentandbelieveinJesusChrist8 John Mulaney is funnier than Jesus, go away. We don’t want god, WE WANT JOHN
exactly! Sean was giggling so much through the interview. must've been so enamoured by his hero!

lol I’m surprised he still has tastebuds left, but clearly, his body can handle a L O T more than a little bit of hot sauce. 😂
if 2020 john mulaney was a vending machine that sold specifically one flavour of soda pop, you could call him a coke machine
Just had to pause & acknowledge John's wild improv talent with the fish food discussion from 18:30 - 20:13 -such a charismatically witty Asian American woman
Thank you, someone had to acknowledge this powerful Asian American Woman 😂😂😂
Right?? Feels like he came up with a fully formed bit on the spot there, while getting his tongue mauled by hot sauce. That's nuts.
Noice. 🤣
John being a recovering addict with an infant son, this is probably the easiest thing he’ll do all week
“You didn’t ask me anything I’d ever been asked before.” Again, Sean is the interview KING. Always impressive.
I mean we gotta see the Sean Vs Nardwuar hot ones it would be insane but idk if Nardwuar is down to eat the wings of death

@@LucidStorm101 I've been asking for that on the comments for over a year now. It would be epic!
@@Panama_Red my guess is a secret detective war is raging on, delaying the interview...
Give thanks to his crew for researching and coming up with great questions!
I will never get tired of guests being blown away by Sean's interviewing skills, his connections, and the research team. The backbone of the show!
I never understand people who say "these are the worst interviews", when all the guests themselves have sincerely good things to say about the experience at the end (spicy suffering aside). I always feel like I get to see a side of the guests I would never get otherwise.
@@hollandscottthomas Yeah between the unique questions and the guests generally being pulled out of "interview mode" by the spicy food, I think this is the best interview format.
How does he get this information??

It's wild to me that people are surprised he handled the wings so well. If you hear him talk about his addiction, hot sauce is probably the tamest thing he's put into his body.
Well yeah but drugs aren't SPICY lol.
i’m sure drug withdrawals are worse than spice

I love John Mulaney so much. I’m so happy and impressed by his fight for sobriety. It’s not easy to stay sober and seeing him come out the other side is just inspiring for others battling the disease. Baby J is my favorite show he’s done.
John Mulaney is one of those comedians who is very smart and his jokes reflect it. He's very observant and detailed in his humour. Love him.
Okay but can he see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
I was surprised by how much of a calming and reflective presence he was.
Would’ve been a very different energy if this interview happened a couple years ago
@@tim.noonangrowth❤
@@tim.noonan truthfully may not have been haha, he was an expert at masking, but yes he definitely seems at peace now. I remember when he'd joke about the drugs as he'd been clean since 2005 (which the lie detector test determined was a lie) and now he's so open and honest about it, you never realized how much he was holding back as he attempted to lie to every single human being on earth about his issues.
This man has to go straight to the top of the spice tier list. I don't think he passed so much as a single heavy breath in response to the heat.
All that stuff he put up his nose really messed with his taste and smell

Ah yes, nose sugar: the PED of hot wing consumption, how could I have forgotten?
He was actually able to identify individual flavors and sweet and savory profiles far better than anyone I've ever seen on this show. Come on dude!
Met John while working at a Diner spot here in NJ and I had to take his waffle back because it was burnt but the 2nd time seeing him I realized who he was and had to let him know I was a huge fan.
Great guy, had no troubles with our mess up and really could tell he was just a calm collected guy. He is the only celebrity I have ever met like that and I'm so thankful for it.
whoa what diner ?
I love how for wing 9 they didn’t even ask him a question it was just John talking about goldfish 😂
Seeing John completely sober it's very obvious when he wasn't.
And all that non sober life has made his taste amd smell completely go
Yeah looking back at his past media, he comes off very on edge. Like a guy putting on an act of being Mr. Rogers with too much energy, but always seconds away from snapping completely. He's so much more chill now, I'm happy for him
It's *wild* in retrospect
Weird, I can only tell sometimes, since he's been on and off a few times throughout his career. One of his interviews with Seth Meyers was a pretty obvious time, but comparing this to a lot of interviews he's done with people like Bill Hader, or his old stand-up..I don't see a difference.
I wonder how much of his past, high energy sober life people are going to look at, now that he's admitted his issues, and they're gonna think "of yea, he was definitely f*cked up there" when he actually wasn't.
Interesting.
Dude looks AGED. I remember marveling at how long he stayed baby faced.
The fact that he was almost unphased and ate nearly the entire wing for most of the sauces is nothing short of incredible
unfazed* :)
I cannot believe how well Mulaney handled the wings of death. What a pleasant interview.
He handled a major detox
. This pain is nothing
You never expect John Mulaney of all people would be able to tank the spices without so much as a bead of sweat
this is wild cause john mulaney is like the last person i wouldve expected to have such a muted response to da bomb
That's a tie for me between John Mulaney and Michael Cera. I didn't expect spice tolerance for either of them, but wow I was blown away.
The goldfish issue with "wanting to keep feeding them" is so true and funny! I never thought about childhood fish boundaries until today, but spot on

I have Guinea pigs now and I still feel that. It’s so hard to say no to their little faces
@@KittyPieVibesthen I wish them well!!
John's ability to not react to the sauces almost took a lot of the entertainment value of this show away, but his comedic style brought it back in spades.
John Mulaney is so good, even though he didn’t even break once on any wing and robbed us of the schadenfreude this show is famous for, it’s still one of the best episodes they’ve ever done.
Schadenfreudeeeeeeee 🎉

This is my number 1 comment. Well said.
Worded perfectly
i love how him and elijah wood both pointed out how the sauces aren't from least to most spicy; rather there is a roller coaster (or as elijah said "a symphony of spice")

I always enjoy when the guest gives a detailed critique of the sauce.
John demolished those wings, Lorde-style. I like how at the end he compliments Sean and the crew for their deep research into the guests. Also, respect to the show for not spending time on John’s addiction and recovery. Mulaney touched on it briefly in passing a couple of times but so many of his post-rehab and Baby J promo appearances have centred on that part of his life, which he is happy to open up about, but for a lot of celebrities, especially stand-ups, there’s a ton of repetition in the interviews and throwing out bits from their shows. Like when Amy Schumer in her latest special tells the story of how she accidentally named her son an embarrassing pun, I had already heard that story on every late night show and others many times. Hot Ones not only has a fun and refreshing premise, but it comes loaded with deep-cut questions that are also refreshing and new, both for the guest and us watching at home. Also, none of them are awkward or put the guest in an uncomfortable position. The only discomfort on this show is from those wings of death.
100 percent spot on comment....this is why this show has been a success. QST of all Sean's respect to the guest and desire to learn more about what the guest is passionate about is what interviews should be. Love love love this show! And now I'm super curious about this comedian who I was not familiar with. Will def check out his special
A lot of interviews center on his addiction and recovery because he did an entire comedy special about it.
Hot Ones is always really good about not being lazy in their question topics, it's really refreshing.
Best canned comment I've read thank you
I always love watching the delight of the guest unfold as they realize that this is not the same old interview experience.
I love when a guest is impressed with a question Sean asks. It really shows the level of detail the team has when making the show.
Love that you mentioned the team! It takes a small army to create in this way.
I loved that this was not just an interview but also a genuine good review of most of the hot sauces. He really gave all of them attention haha.
It's a testament to the strength of sober addicts- like the hottest hot sauce can't even touch the pain of what you go through in withdrawals. The man wore a cashmere sweater to hot ones?? DIdn't break a sweat? Unreal.
That fish food convo did more for me than 2 years of therapy ever did
Same!
It made a huge impact on me too. It explained a lot of my own feelings too. Despite never having had fish.

It literally changed my life. I know look at flowers and I say... "wow would you look at that. A flower."
That same instinct is why I chronically over water plants.
Every time I see an interview with John Mulaney he ends up establishing an inside joke with the interviewer to break the ice. He’s as good at being interviewed as Sean is at the interviewing itself
Knowing of his social anxiety always makes me look at those things a bit different. But he truly seems a great person with a beautiful mind

It's amazing that the Hot Ones team didn't ask John Mullaney about his addiction and his relationships, his hot topics recently, but still presenting a great interview.
It's actually not that amazing. Hot One's takes pride in NOT bringing up ANY controversy questions or comments. It is one of the reasons they have gotten so many incredible guests. They are known for their safe space.
He's here to promote a project, not provide an in depth documentary.

He gave great answers to Sean's great questions and he acknowledged that fact and just everything about this episode was everything you want to happen in a hot one's episode.
He did great, but the episodes with Gordon Ramsey were better
Hmmm…it’s so curious…why is it that when someone says they enjoy something other people jump on to reply and say…”nuuh uhh this other thing was better” 🤔…no one is saying YOU have to think it’s the best. I’m genuinely curious…Why not just post your opinion to the feed instead of posting it as a reply/response to someone else’s opinion 🤔
I actually haven't watched that many episodes. The idea of having an interview while eating chicken with progressively spicier hot sauce just doesn't appeal to me. I will say this is one of the best episodes that I've seen, though.
This is one of my most favorite Hot Wings! He was so authentic, sincere, funny, unpredictable, and captivating. He’s a great story teller. He’s so funny! He handled those hot sauces better than anyone so far.
"you didn't ask me anything that i've ever been asked before"
Just another testament in a long line of testaments to how amazing Sean and the team at hot ones are at research and conducting interviews.
The real bit of joy that manifested in his face when talking about writing jokes for others.
This may be one of my favorite interviews. John always sorta occupied a space where I was very aware of him and his great comedy, but he's never been so obviously forefront as he is here. He's so analytical.
He’s an ADDICT. he’s damaged beyond repair, he looks high in this video
🔫 Always has been 🔫
I think the analytical part comes from both his parents being lawyers. I could only imagined them chewing his arguments each time he opens his mouth.
i love him sm
John has been the first in my life to ever articulate the difference between the spice and the flavor so specifically. i understand him completely.
John Mulaney is such a gift to this world. I'm glad he got clean and I hope he has many many more laugh-filled years alongside us
He doesn't look clean, but it may also be that he has a new born at home.
@@cnsobottka any improvement is good and it's good to see he has a good support base
Now that you've interviewed John Mulaney, please get Conan and his podcast crew. That would be the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Also, John totally killed those wings. I am seriously impressed.
Yes please. I can’t wait to see Conan go from zero to hundred and see Matt and Sona lose it.
Conan is bad with spice though right. And i know he's not gonna come just to nibble on each wing....
Conan cant handle hot food
YES
Yessss, I was gonna comment that!!! I wanna see Conan!!
We're all happy for you, John. You are much loved. Don't ever let your brain tell you otherwise.
Very true. I will say the best bit to me will always be the Bill Clinton one but John is in a class by himself
What a wonderful comment. Well said😊❤
He’s a grown man. Real healing comes when he doesn’t need everyone to love him.
@@lifesquixoticyou must not have watched his recent special because he made it clear that he’s no longer obsessed with what everyone thinks of him. It’s still a nice, supportive comment.
@@goldenskies7 I was always impressed with his talent, but that was greatly magnified when he got right back into the work that he is so good at.
