On a call ahead of her Tiny Desk taping, WILLOW told me that she "just wants to feel it and be in the vibe." Many artists worry about having to tailor their music for the space, but if done right, a beautiful synergy can be achieved. With boundless energy and magnetic stage presence, the artist's exceptional vocal range and musicality left the audience spellbound.
Despite being only 23 years old, the singer-songwriter and musician Willow Smith is a vet when it comes to this music thing. She's been consistently making music and on a journey of sonic exploration since she was just 9 years old and is about to put out her sixth album, empathogen, in just a few days. Zach Tenorio on upright piano kicks off the show, cueing the first few bars of the jazz-infused, odd-meter vibes of "Symptom of Life" from the new album, later complimented by trippy Ebow effects courtesy of Liso Lee on guitar.
Then, a couple throwbacks: a stripped down arrangement of "Split" from the 2022 album and fan-favorite "Wait a Minute!" from her 2015 album ARDIPITHECUS, which undergoes some mind-blowing bass riffing from Mohini Dey. Dey continues with some severe stank-face on a world premiere of the funky, bass-heavy "Run!" from the upcoming album, locking in tastefully with The Pocket Queen on drums. Closing the set with "Big Feelings," the band gets busy while WILLOW's vocals soar, effortlessly teetering between emotive highs and lows, leaving us all wanting more.

Bruh!
💯👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥
Dude...that's Mohini Dey! That's why!!! If you don't know about her...look her up!
@@courtlandchavis4662 Imma bout too, she is so good 😭😭
Mohini Dey is such a sick Bass player!!!
She’s done what most nepo babies have the ability to do but fail to do, use their enormous privilege and access to actually develop their gift/talent/skill instead of just expecting things to be handed to them!
Yes! Keep going, Little Mama!!!! You ARE an artist!!!!
Except for the fact that she sounds below average. She is definitely a nepo baby, I've heard female vocalists singing on the street that are more deserving of showcasing their talent.
Except she didn't even introduce the musicians in her band 🤨
@@WE__BTS she seemed to be a little nervous, didn't even introduce herself, first times can go like that...🤷🏾♀
@@WE__BTS well, read the caption, their names are there. And I follow the drummer, she needs no introduction for me.
She sings complicatedly but effortlessly🔥🔥
Effortlessly talentless is what you meant right?
@@Baron_Greenback a talented person has to put more effort or a less talented person has to??
Or just simply update your vocab
Perfect description.
@@Baron_GreenbackShe is definetly not talentless. The heck are you talking about?
definitely not! @@Baron_Greenback
Can we talk about how talented the musicians are??? Just WOW 🤯
THIS!!!!
Well practiced, skilled. They weren’t given this on a genetical plate, unless that’s what you meant haha good evening
I love that Willow is able to make the music she wants unapologetically
Having unlimited $$$ will open creative doors
@greatdanaluv finally someone that's honest and perceptive about what's happening here.
A lot of us would be free, inspiring and creative humans if we never had to work a day in our lives too.
Indeed…I am glad she is showing us that freedom is worth fighting for through her art…
To all those bringing up finances which she can't control. I was referring to the fact that her dad tried to box her into one genre which led her to quit music. Now as an adult she is free to create whatever she wants. Negative energy has no place in this chat. ASE 🙏🏾😌
That bassist is born to be a musician, she's feeling every note played.
Mohini Dey 😊
Fantastic to see Mohini Dey on NPR. Legendary bassist.
@AngryMonkeyza WOW! You got that right@ 🎸
SHE EVEN GOT A BASS TATTOO
Why just her? Everyone there is vibing. People always seem to talk only about the bassists in Tiny Desks, which is cool, but stop neglecting the other talents.
People stay sleeping on Willow. I been rocking with her since her track "IDK".......LOVE THIS!!!!
It's not that she's slept on. Only those who are suppose to hear her, will hear her.
I was born in 1960, this young lady has such a hippy/beatnik vibe about her and her music. It’s refreshing, free flowing and nostalgic (for me)! Well done child of Will and Jada😊
She does, and I love it. She's a true musician.
I hear so much of Joni Mitchell in her style! The music has a winding flourishing approach that is sooooo refreshing!
@@Btone33I hear a little Joni influence too, and a touch of Laura Nyro. But Miss Willow has definitely come into her own style. Well done!
She seems carefree because she is. She's basically retired and just doing what she wants.
Refreshing indeed!!!! In my heart I’m often hoping to see new artists who actually vocally paint a picture of today’s world and send messages to next generation instead of only putting out a bunch of repetitive messages about beefs. Where are the one world Barb Marleys, The Stevie Wonders. Fantastic job indeed Willow Smith.
Fun fact: The marking on Willow’s forehead is called tilak- it’s made with a clay from a sacred holy river and the paste is called Gopi Chandan. A mantra is chanted when applying it asking God to reside in the mind and open our minds to His presence! (It’s placed on 12 different parts of the body too) It’s a beautiful ancient Vedic practice from a spiritual lineage called Krishna Consciousness. Or God consciousness! Its main teaching is that we are all spirit souls, not the body.
Interesting! I was wondering.
Also known as Christ Consciousness
I am a practicer of Krishna Consciousness, although we are non sectarian we respect Christ as an extremely influential teacher sent by God to share the process of God connection. But we don’t call it Christ consciousness as we believe divinity is Krishna. Haribol 🙏🏻
Thank for sharing!
More than likely with her, it's just something to look cool
That drummer's smile is gorgeous...love seeing these female cool musicians. Such a vibe they have.
Haha I literally left a similar comment about that gorgeous drummer 🥰
THE POCKET QUEEEEEEEEN! She is WICKED on those drums! She's definitely a rabbit hole that I'd suggest lol

Willows voice is as beautiful as her eyes, and she has the prettiest eyes ive ever seen :)
The chemistry of this band is off the freaking charts
They are vibin hard. Excellent.
starting off with symptom of life is so satisfying
Yusssssssssssssssss🤌🏾
I've had that song on repeat since it came out.

Very pleasing to me
I am 64 years old and obsessed with her voice, if this little town I live in could afford to have her I would sit and listen to her for hours. The musicians are so exceptional. Keep up your amazing uniqueness...you deserve to fly!!!❤❤
The only problem with this performance is that my husband has passed and isn’t here to enjoy it with me! He was so musically adventurous!
I completely feel this my friend would of loved this we always vibed out to music

The pocket queen is a beast.
Can’t stop playing this. The way she switches vocals is amazing. My 60 year old self is blown away by all of them. Love
Right. That's what I'm amazed at! Not many folks I hear sing with that voice variation.
She certainly perfected the art of singing while tone deaf.
She is an INSANELY talented vocalist
If Willow Smith went on tour you better believe my 40-year-old behind would probably be one of the first to purchase a ticket! She is amazing!

Willow's artistic definition grows like 5 years per year. Putting herself around such rare musicians and learning, training. This is inspiring.
The learning must Never end once you stop Learning you die like an artist and human being. You can notice she really takes seriously music and musicians and exploring progressive rock and jazz artists is open her mind to an unlimited world
zzzzzz......
Y’all are delusional
All it takes is paying the musicians.
When you're filthy rich you get a ton of time to develop skills and pay the best trainers best equipment. Truly amazing what money does.
I love willow's authenticity, she and aurora are so refreshing with their creativity and musicality.
Authenticity is the key and she definitely has it. Not a cookie cutter band. They are brilliant!
I’m here for artistic freedom. Yes Willow!
She just needs an album of live performances…. They are life
She has one
That's a nice statement
And this is coming soon to Spotify for sure idk about Apple music
I second this
How is she only 23? Old soul full of passion and I'm here for it.
Because of her parents, she has lived a hard 23
She was born in October 2000 and it's now 2024, making her 23. Basically after you're born, each complete orbit of the Earth makes you a year older. Hope that helps.
What does age have to do with passion?
@@ArchiveRagtagMoe Don't say this to the judge
@@lizab8400bro “hard” is not the word I would use. Talking like she came from some kind of struggle house. Bruh they quadrillionares. Maybe an “eventful 23”. Or a “unusual 23.” But ain’t fkng sht hard about a Smiths life unless you’re named Will.
Imagine being filthy rich from birth, you can do whatever tf you want. Whether it’s good or not doesn’t even matter. It will just be successful. I’m not a hater but don’t sit here and pretend that she’s some sort of inspirational artist with a hard knock life. I like her music but I’m not oblivious. This sht weird asf and I highly doubt this vid wouldnt have 4 million views if it wasn’t for her…nvm ifyk. If you don’t, I’m sorry
A young, talented melanin queen. Powerful....... She has her own style.
This is very surprisingly one of the best tiny desks I’ve ever seen. I knew she was good, but wow.
I love the sound and the freedom of her music. No genre, just flow and beauty
The words I couldn’t find.. thank you
Exactly.❤
Nah. WILLOW got “IT” this arrangement is so unique and specifically her own passion and voice! I love her movement.
In a funny way, this is the most jazz thing possible!
The first song I heard from her years ago was so unique! I was shocked after I heard it to find out who it was and that she was only 14 at the time. Ha! Had to come back because it was Wait a Minute I was talking about and she did it and it was amazing!
This "wait a minute" has to be the best version ever. The musicality is out of this world! Kudos to the band! Amazing talent.
I got emotional.
there is another version that tops that wait a minute... completely acoustic and really shows her real vocal capability... shes awesome
spoke to my soul
It is really a great version!
Wow! Willow is on point! Range, emotion, timing! I’m floored! I would buy her stuff no doubt! Singing like the ancestors!!
The drummer the whole time was just feeling the vibe and loving what they do. Great to see.

Thank you!
Is “Run!” really not on Apple Music?
Mother
People call her and her brother nepotism babies but oh man, theyre absolutely talented. So, so talented.
It’s so obvious to me how independent they are from their dad’s influence but they were encouraged from birth to be their authentic selves and had the financial support to pursue their passions, they are naturally talented in their passions and it’s beautiful to see.
Without nepotism and resources we wouldn't know about these people.
That's the very definition of nepotism 😂
@@AskAW Nepotism and money are not the same thing. And there’s literally no way to prove whether or not we would know of them regardless, because we already know about them. Moving on.
Nepotism and money doesn't guarantee success, but with money you can nurture your kids talents and with high profile parents ppl will listen and give the art a chance.
@@ComradeHBbut why are you here listening to the nepobaby? You could listen right now to someone who doesn't have famous parents and give their art a chance.
She's so underrated actually. I love her vocals very much
Aw stop shes not underrated they don't have underrated artists on tiny desk concerts
Oh, WOW... I'm in awe of your vocal range, Willow!🥰 As a 53 year old music enthusiast, I can really appreciate a live performance that allows the vocals and instruments to be heard in sync, capturing every changing note. This performance really inspired me at such a needed time. Thank-you greatly... Stay in the Light!!!😇❤
Every single musician in this band is absolutely EXCEPTIONAL!!!! Willow is magical! The Bassist is a genius! The pianist is a virtuoso! The guitarist is exquisite! The drummer is masterful! I could listen to this concert over and over again all day long.
Yesssss!!!!!!
i wish she introduced them!
Pocket Queen on drums🔥
I have been doing exactly that lol 😆
Looks like Mohini Dey on Bass . She’s awesome
I’ll probably get some folks coming at me, but I was NOT aware of Willow’s actual singing abilities. There’s a heck of lot depth, passion and range! I’m genuinely impressed!
If I remember correctly, she did a lot artist development and vocal training over the years. It's definitely paid off.
You should definitely check out her albums. They all sound different and it's great hearing how powerful her vocals are and how they've progressed over the years
No 1 should jump on you since you've come to this realization.
Welcome to the light! She has such beautiful tone and control!
I think this is pretty valid tbh! The couple songs that went super viral were not the ones (in my opinion) that showcased her talent despite being incredible songs.
This band is everything. Love Willow
When I look at Willow's face, I immediately recognize her famous parents. I start to want to put all of my own assumptions I've made about her parents on to her. It's a natural tendency for a human to do this. However, I am quickly snapped back from this when I listen to her tone and words. It's honest and beautiful and it's Willow as an individual. For this, I have immense respect for her. It's so refreshing.
I love the faces she makes when she sings. I can tell she doesn’t just make music, she LOVES music
I was saying the same thing
Serisouly? She sucks bruv. She’s on here bc of her daddy. Voice ain’t worthy to be on here
I am so glad Willow Smith got a tiny desk concert. Her voice is amazing.
And the natural yodel that her voice does... 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
My favorite thing about her voice and the whisper notes ❤❤
@shermandean1778 Yes. They're gorgeous, too.
her voice is flat lol
Hey voice is mediocre at best. Shes more pretentious than talented. Come on man, do you know anything about music? No offense but if her name wasnt Smith she would be another Woke kid in college waiting to do nothing.

This threw me back to an old Janis Joplin interview where she talks about female artists not "feeling the music" ☮️💟 - love to see music and emotions in such a flow here, beautiful
This is the definition of everybody doing their part in a group assignment, 10/10 no notes, they are all insanely talented!!!
Willow’s tiny desk is the one i have been waiting for for so long!!!

okay no-profile-pic Campzzyzx
@loveindefinitely there was a time when tiny desk was a place for real musicians but looks like if you can afford to piece a studio band together and sing karaoke they will give you a platform. I'm sure it has nothing to do with who her parents are just pure talent
Totally agree, I would also check out the tiny desk version of RAYE, she is WAAAAAY better in live performances.
With you totally, so freshing
Beautiful Willow!! ❤❤
Willow is such an incredibly underrated musician, her stylistic range is so dope.
This is amazing. I don’t care what anyone says re the ‘nepo’ stuff. She deserves this. Very musical, utilising some complex shifts there too. It’s heavy. Money or not she’s dedicated and committed a lot of time to make herself a solid musician, making good music, complex music. I’m impressed.
Agreed!!!!!
Me too. I really love her and her music because she is unique.
What’s a nepo?
@@RnBReworked -- Short for nepotism. She has famous parents, but her talent is so much greater than anything either one of them has shown, IMO. Although she has some cowriters on some of her songs, she can play the guitar and sing simultaneously, and sing beautifully at that. And she's not afraid of complex time signatures, unusual chords, etc.
When that first "Whip My Hair" song came out, I mistakenly dismissed her music as only getting attention because of her parents and their money. But she has absolutely proven me wrong.
She wouldn't be here without the money, but it's a well earned position.
THE BAND IS LOCKED IN!!!! She is AMAZING!!!! They are listening and following wherever she goes. I love how connected they are. The music was excellent too!!!! Love you Willow 👸🏽
Wow! She definitely has her own style and it's comfortable in her skin.

What an absolutely SIC-KEN-ING display of musicianship from this group! I know this was Willow's tiny desk, but if I had no clue who Ms.Smith was, I would think Willow is the name of the band after watching this performance. The cohesion. The synergy. THE VIBES. Everyone was ON. IT.

The number of times I've watched this Tiny Desk in it's entirety is unhealthy.
My favorite part of Willow’s performance(s) is that she appears to be having the best time ever. We’re so used to existing on the vibration of misery (or being around it) that it’s super rare to see someone enjoying what they do this much. Makes me want to be more intentional about creating space for more joy in my life. After all, we’re only guaranteed one ride at this thing.
Beautifully said, her passion is making me teary
She's great and adorable, but holy Toledo the drummer and bass player are killing me.
I don’t care who her parents are. Money cannot buy what she has. She’s sincere, naturally gifted, and has a voice all her own.
EDIT: Everyone in the comments stating the obvious. Of course her parents fame and financial status has benefited her immensely. But you can throw all the money in the world at someone and the best you can hope to do is turn them into a one dimensional entertainer if they have no natural substance of their own. True artists are born and Willow has that extra little something in spades. If all she wanted was to be in the spotlight she could’ve easily taken the Kardashian route but she chose to stand for something, apply herself, put in the work and, yes, utilize everything available to her, including the wealth of the family she was born into. Unless you’re stuck on whining about how unfair life is, you should take zero issue with that.
Agreed! This talent was created through hardwork & perseverance ❤❤
I agree.
Money can create a safe environment where you can explore your naturally gifted talents instead of having to work for your survival from a young age on.
yeah, shes truly special
