the crux of having famous parents, and problematic ones at that. Do I think she was able to nurture her talent more because of her privileged background? Sure.. but that's not important in art. the product is all that matters. One of the most exciting performance I've see in a while
@@fiji895 true, but how we know that there is no people like her that don't have the privilege?, how many AMAZING ARTIST we are missing because of money and oportunity?
@@el6tomejorcritico666 Basically, all her bandmates and the majority of successful musicians and artists don't have famous or rich parents. But they usually have supportive parents. I'd say she's a celebrity kid that defies the Nepo stereotype. She actually has talent, and doesn't need her famous parents to lift her up. Nepo babies often lack talent and willingness to work hard. @@RnBReworked -- Short for nepotism. She has famous parents, but her talent is so much greater than anything either one of them has shown, IMO. Although she has some cowriters on some of her songs, she can play the guitar and sing simultaneously, and sing beautifully at that. And she's not afraid of complex time signatures, unusual chords, etc. When that first "Whip My Hair" song came out, I mistakenly dismissed her music as only getting attention because of her parents and their money. She really is something. I fell in love with her voice instantly myself. I came across her on Spotify when I had a radio station playing songs like those I’ve saved. They played her and I was hooked.
My favorite part of Willow’s performance(s) is that she appears to be having the best time ever. Mother
First time hearing Willow. Impressive. I am 75 and she takes me back to the great artists I grew up with, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell... and a dash of Janet Jackson. Looking forward to more.
I love that everyone in her band are real musicians. Like there’s so many chord progressions, tempo changes within a tempo change to a weird chord; it’s amazing to hear and watch!
The bassist Mohini Dey is also really big in bass world so she def found the right people
Their ability to play in the pocket is really spot on
Yep, How's exactly how a band can be successful. By knowing where they belong and what they are capable.
When the bassist and drummer are smiling and exchanging looks, you know it's about to be amazing
Mohiny Dey et cette voix c'est magnifique et inattendu
Bravo
She sings complicatedly but effortlessly🔥🔥
Effortlessly talentless is what you meant right?
@@Baron_Greenback a talented person has to put more effort or a less talented person has to??

Perfect description.
@@Baron_GreenbackShe is definetly not talentless. The heck are you talking about?
definitely not! @@Baron_Greenback
Bro the vibes between the bass and drum is insane
I’ll probably get some folks coming at me, but I was NOT aware of Willow’s actual singing abilities. There’s a heck of lot depth, passion and range! I’m genuinely impressed!
If I remember correctly, she did a lot artist development and vocal training over the years. It's definitely paid off.
You should definitely check out her albums. They all sound different and it's great hearing how powerful her vocals are and how they've progressed over the years
No 1 should jump on you since you've come to this realization.
Welcome to the light! She has such beautiful tone and control!
I think this is pretty valid tbh! The couple songs that went super viral were not the ones (in my opinion) that showcased her talent despite being incredible songs.

Willow needs to take this exact band on tour!!! Great production NPR!
This is the definition of everybody doing their part in a group assignment, 10/10 no notes, they are all insanely talented!!!
No words, this girl is just… perfection, no other word. What a talent. Full control of her voice, all the techniques, completly in tune and so visceral and real, she feels every note… just amazing ❤
She whipped her vocals back and forth
That's called butchering the performance. It would have been better with no vocals at all.
@@farleyholicsannonymous8172: On a subjective basis, no one can talk you into liking something. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Not everything is for everyone, and this is certainly not the pop music we are used to.
But on an objective basis, this is a skilled performance, showing command, precision, and expressiveness.
@farleyholicsannonymous8172 I don't like the Smith family one bit.
I almost deliberately do not want to like this performance.
But her singing in this is incredible.
You can't claim she butched the performance when she is singing at the very top of her game.
Good luck finding singers who can sing like this.
@@adamjacksonmedia It's not her fault her parents. That's it. That's the whole statement.
Good one!!!🤣🤣🤣
What an absolutely SIC-KEN-ING display of musicianship from this group! I know this was Willow's tiny desk, but if I had no clue who Ms.Smith was, I would think Willow is the name of the band after watching this performance. The cohesion. The synergy. THE VIBES. Everyone was ON. IT.
She's doing this completely live, no auto tuning or production, and in 7 time.... wow, just wow
Needs auto tuning for sure

Bassist having the time of her life ❤
Willow is such an incredibly underrated musician, her stylistic range is so dope.
the crux of having famous parents, and problematic ones at that.
They settle for short cuts to fame.
@@el6tomejorcritico666 Agreed, but that will always be the case. Would we have known of Botticelli, DaVinci, Blake, Francis Bacon, George Orwell etc. etc. if they weren't born in privilege and were able to spend whole days whistfully working on their talent, instead of spending 10 hours a day down a mine or something
Money & talent. She is very cool along with the band. I haven't heard anything like it in a long while. Privilege has bought her the very best in music lessons that money could buy and it's all paid off.
People call her and her brother nepotism babies but oh man, theyre absolutely talented. So, so talented.
It’s so obvious to me how independent they are from their dad’s influence but they were encouraged from birth to be their authentic selves and had the financial support to pursue their passions, they are naturally talented in their passions and it’s beautiful to see.
Without nepotism and resources we wouldn't know about these people.
That's the very definition of nepotism 😂
@@AskAW Nepotism and money are not the same thing. And there’s literally no way to prove whether or not we would know of them regardless, because we already know about them. Moving on.
Nepotism and money doesn't guarantee success, but with money you can nurture your kids talents and with high profile parents ppl will listen and give the art a chance.
@@ComradeHBbut why are you here listening to the nepobaby? You could listen right now to someone who doesn't have famous parents and give their art a chance.
I....didn't know she was so talented! This is pure...no autotuning....This entire band...just...wow!!
Willow has some serious vocal control. Wow. She’s uniquely a mastery to her craft.
Are you kidding?
Yes sirr been rocking since she was 16 I'm so proud she stucj with her own 💕 she helped awakened me.❤❤❤❤
yes but did you whipped your hair back and forth tho?
Still a kid's voice. Needs to develop quite a lot more.
@@exhainca For sure. She's definitely got talent but you can tell she's untrained. She shouts more than she sings, which is a mistake a lot of rookie singers do when they don't have vocal coaches. She'll end up damaging her voice.
This is amazing. I don’t care what anyone says re the ‘nepo’ stuff. She deserves this. Very musical, utilising some complex shifts there too. It’s heavy. Money or not she’s dedicated and committed a lot of time to make herself a solid musician, making good music, complex music. I’m impressed.
Agreed!!!!!
Me too. I really love her and her music because she is unique.
What’s a nepo?
@@RnBReworked -- Short for nepotism. She has famous parents, but her talent is so much greater than anything either one of them has shown, IMO. Although she has some cowriters on some of her songs, she can play the guitar and sing simultaneously, and sing beautifully at that. And she's not afraid of complex time signatures, unusual chords, etc.
When that first "Whip My Hair" song came out, I mistakenly dismissed her music as only getting attention because of her parents and their money. But she has absolutely proven me wrong.
She wouldn't be here without the money, but it's a well earned position.
Wait a minute Mohini Dey & Pocket Queen??? And getting introduced to these other FIRE Musicians on keys and guitar with Willow??? This is a good morning!!!! Once again thank you Tiny Desk❤❤❤

🗣️ RIGHT!!!
You beat me to it with this comment! And Willows artistry is just phenomenal. I wished she had introduced the other players .
The coolest thing about her music is the fact that I can't categorize it❤️❤️
I was born in 1960, this young lady has such a hippy/beatnik vibe about her and her music. It’s refreshing, free flowing and nostalgic (for me)! Well done child of Will and Jada😊
She does, and I love it. She's a true musician.
I hear so much of Joni Mitchell in her style! The music has a winding flourishing approach that is sooooo refreshing!
@@Btone33I hear a little Joni influence too, and a touch of Laura Nyro. But Miss Willow has definitely come into her own style. Well done!
She seems carefree because she is. She's basically retired and just doing what she wants.
Refreshing indeed!!!! In my heart I’m often hoping to see new artists who actually vocally paint a picture of today’s world and send messages to next generation instead of only putting out a bunch of repetitive messages about beefs. Where are the one world Barb Marleys, The Stevie Wonders. Fantastic job indeed Willow Smith.
It is insane how incredibly talented each of these musicians is
I like the pure poetry and essentially prayerful expression. What a journey
Except the singer - you are right
@@Baron_Greenback She's an excellent singer. Maybe you don't like her style, but you can't say she isn't technically phenomenal.
I'm almost 70. I have never loved a band so instantly. I cannot help hearing echoes and strains of Joni Mitchell in Free Man in Paris, except afresh and anew, somehow modern. I hear excellence, durability, authenticity, artistry, competence, raw expression and all the best of the best in this. New Heights. That phrase spared me more words.
I’m also almost 70 and a singer songwriter. I grew up inhaling Joni and don’t play standard chords. This just blew me away.
I agree, Willow is amazing.
I heard Joni too
Yeah, you can definitely hear the Joni Mitchell influence.
She really is something. I fell in love with her voice instantly myself. I came across her on Spotify when I had a radio station playing songs like those I’ve saved. They played her and I was hooked.
Beautiful production, Williow is talent!! THE BAND!!!
My favorite part of Willow’s performance(s) is that she appears to be having the best time ever. We’re so used to existing on the vibration of misery (or being around it) that it’s super rare to see someone enjoying what they do this much. Makes me want to be more intentional about creating space for more joy in my life. After all, we’re only guaranteed one ride at this thing.
Beautifully said, her passion is making me teary
She's great and adorable, but holy Toledo the drummer and bass player are killing me.

“I got such big feelings” is pretty much the best way to describe how I feel after watching this. Absolutely phenomenal.

I was yelling in disbelief the entire time they were playing that, the key and tempo and time signature changes bring it near the edge of impossibility.

I'm so confused with these comments. I love Willow & her music but this vocal performance is extremely hard to listen to
It's pretty clear how heavily produced and pitch corrected her music is despite trying to make it appear "raw." This live performance is not just being shouty to be quirky, it's also way off pitch. Despite that, I think the songs are awesome and super creative
