Dramatic change is possible and valuable too. It’s also hyper necessary at this point in time where incrementalism has only ever served the powerful and pacified the people.

I was honestly surprised by how well he did. This somehow was simultaneously both far less unhinged and far less interview-like and more like a regular conversation than any other Hot Ones I've seen before. (I'm one of those people who don't watch every one, though.)
The honesty in his nature, the lighthearted self depreciating humor, the wit with its dark shadows- that's a very refreshing and enjoyable change of pace from the standard celeb vibe

Sean Evans needs to teach several master classes in interviewing. I think he's one of the greatest EVER. John said, "Wow, that's a really good question," TWICE, and was clearly stunned by how many odd jobs Sean knew he'd done. And every interview, Sean serves the same quality!
I just discovered John Oliver recently. Sometimes after work when I feel like crying I will revisit old stories that remind me someone out there cares. John, you are a light in the dark. That free kick was legendary.
Highly HIGHLY recommend watching Jon Stewart if you aren't already. The Problem was great and on youtube and he'll be hosting the Daily Show again on Mondays starting in about 2 weeks. Both Jon and John are my favorite late night hosts.
John Oliver is awesome. I randomly met him while walking in NYC. He was with his young son so I didn't ask for a photo but I work in news so I thanked him a lot for his work and how important it is. He seemed genuinely happy I told him that.
John Oliver is my RUclips go to guy. I watch every single J.O. video the algorithm sends me and he NEVER disappoints me. He is as my father used to say about Robin Williams "Chronically strange"..... Indeed dad and wonderfully so.
John's closing sentiments remind me of Gandalf's sentiments to Pippin in Return of the King: "Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."
What I like most about John is that he allows himself to laugh and giggle along with the joke teller. It seems that most comedians just let jokes drip off them and not react, as if they're the only ones who can be funny...or if they're in one of those cliques, then they're suddenly all the funniest in the room. It's almost like he has actual joy. Edit: Interviewer on interviewer would have to be...............Chris Hansen
The fact he took his time for promotion to promote someone else’s book was incredible. It confirmed my belief in John Oliver as one of the best humans on this rock.
I’ve watched every single episode of last week tonight several times over as a leftist pizza delivery driver needing something to listen to while driving, and I’ve learned to appreciate John as a comedic, chaotic good entity that inspires me to do good in ways I never would’ve appreciated otherwise. John Oliver inspired me to take part, and I can’t thank him enough for the laughs and inspiration. My hours of underpaid labor were made worth it, because I spent them being inspired by him.

This man helps my workout regimen in so many ways. He breaks down topics that I wish "the (commercial) news" would touch, topics that make me angry enough for things like battle ropes where otherwise I'd just be breaking glasses without his commentary to distill the horrible instincts of humanity into something useful; he does it with such levity that I say "**** it, me feet are destroying my life, but there are worse things in the world, so I'll run today if I can listen to this"; and by Gods does he help with core day. Laughter during planks is such a game-changer that I almost have abs now. Thanks John. PS: cashier robin hood is the archetype I strive for.
There aren't many people in news I'd consider "vital" in terms of how we progress in digesting news, but John Oliver is one of them. He's just an important human being, and we are lucky to exist alongside him.
I did not know of this man before i watched this and this was one of the best episodes i have watched. I will now be checking out more of John Oliver's content. And Sean is always an amazing interviewer and host.❤❤😊😊
As someone who is super prone to doom spiraling and over thinking, last week tonight helps me actually process horrific stories and situations. The jokes force my brain out of “my god everything is awful and I can’t do anything about it” mode. Thanks for everything John, can’t wait for you guide me through more nightmares of society
It's like having to take some horrible medicine and mixing it with something sweet. Does it make the horrible stuff taste great? No, but it helps you get it down which is the important part. John mixes horrible news with comedy. The comedy helps us get the horrible news down. Then, once we've internalized the horrible stuff, instead of feeling dejected about how horrible it is, we can laugh at the comedy bits while we work to fix it.
20:26 "I'm leaving because I'm old and angry, and you're young and happy, so enjoy it while it lasts." That definitely hits home. I think we've all gotten a sense of that in our lives as we've gotten older. It feels that way for myself. Over the last few years, my cynicism has grown stronger, almost festering inside of me due to the sheer amount of hypocrisy in the world.
Same here, but I always try to turn the cynicism into raw rage to fuel my desire to make the world better for everyone(except for the billionaires). It helps me get through most days
Oh, yeah, I'm plenty cynical as well... but I want to make the world a little better where I am. I'll probably never do anything great, but just that tiny bit is enough.
The behaviour of the guest would change if they are made to feel like they are 'performing' in front of a larger audience and would no longer be as authentic. The 1 to 1 nature with a few laughs is part of the charm!
I'll be honest, it's the first episode of this show I've watched, but the crew's laughs did make the video a lot more enjoyable for me too. The setting is very clean, but could end up feeling a little "empty" or "lonely", or "isolated", and the background laughs brought a welcome feel of "they're not alone in the void". And, of course, the fact that they're genuine, honest laughs, that are still very much in the background and not explicitly "meant to be heard" (as in, there's no dedicated mic for them or camera switch or w/e), contributes to the overall feeling of sincerity and spontaneity. So yeah - completely agree with you, the crew's laughs played a surprisingly large part in my enjoyment of the video (on top, of course, of the content of the video itself).

You can say all you want about how Sean is a good interviewer because he does his research. It’s clear as day that his research is a product of his dedication to really bond with the guest. It’s one thing to do deep research as a gag or a gimic. It’s a completely new class of act when Sean does it from the bottom of his heart. Sure he probably does it for the views at the end of the day, but keep up the genuine acts of kindness, Sean.

I still recall the Obama inauguration where he did the "reporting" for the daily show and went around kissing people at the National Mall and how surprised I was that he could do it in America without getting into legal trouble.
A year or two ago I immediately told two family members to go read it, and felt betrayal when they said they already read it yet did not recommend it to me earlier. It is a solid read

You can have on as many celebs on as you want. But John Oliver is close to peak guest for me. The line "you deserve the monkey in the hat, spitting its metallic venom at you," delivered in the throughs of spice agony.... is just simply poetry. What is the meaning of “Worthy is thy lamp”?

What I like most about John is that he allows himself to laugh and giggle along with the joke teller. I love hearing the crew laughing. This show could legitimately be shot in front of a live audience and get hearty laughs. I love this show.
The intimacy between Sean and his guests is part of the shows charm. A live audience would take that away.
