MJ's era was one where guys stayed in college for 3 or 4 years. They came into the league way more polished and ready to perform than all the one and done guys today.
This right here is the truth. It is all about getting the pay check as soon as possible. And then there is the garbage load management. ML, Kobe, they were playing to win and they were playing for the fans. They knew that there were people in the stands that were there to see them. They weren't about to sit out a game.
Lol. Why does no one mention all of the rule changes. The eras are different because of the rules. Comparing isn’t really fair due to lebron playing for so long in this new era. If mj and kobe played in this era they’d be load managed. Look at kobes last like 5 seasons he was always hurt on a losing team. It’s just a difference in time. Kobe and mj are the ones you can compare. Because they are exactly alike. You can’t compare them to someone who plays completely different in a different era with different rules
This era is a error where the same thing can be said for players in high school of this era where they have more knowledge available to them than Jordan's era. So I would venture to say that kids today come into college more polished. If you disagree then I will simply ask you who is Zion Williamson of Jordan's era I'm talking about in high school terms. Because if you want to be completely honest Zion was the same player in high school that he is today. He's just older and stronger. Donovan Mitchell is another great example of a person who didn't have a great college career but the literally the next year when he got drafted he showed how powerless she already was and he couldn't show that in college because you have to be on a coach's plan. My final point being this is why you have so many people that are disappointed in so many kids that were great in high school then got drafted to be drafted busts because we already seen how great they can be.
And those “stay in college” shooting guards that MJ faced in big games, mostly 1v1 with no zone defense: Danny Ainge, Craig Ehlo, Jeff Horacek, Dan Majerle, Scott Skiles, 175lb Kevin Johnson. Dumars beat him most of the time, size of Steph curry. The guards back then were creampuffs
I agree but what JJ is saying is in 88-89 they added 4 teams and in 95 they added 2 more. None of those 6 teams had more than 30 wins there first 4 seasons. That means the were easier games that wouldn't have been there if they weren't added. Of course the Great Teams were still great we arn't talking about the great teams he's talking about the historically bad teams that didn't exist.
@@joeblow1878do you know how many rounds the draft was before? How many new college teams were added? Since there are still the same amount of teams is the league watered down now? Adding teams doesn't water down the league or are you saying the Bill Russell days were the toughest since there was the fewest amount of teams.
I'm from '76 in a sense it is but my thoughts are that it is more fragile than anything. There is a lot of accident prone players and a lot of load management going on where some players consistently miss most of the season. Guys like Kobe went so hard that they had to go for awhile later on in their careers from always playing through injuries.
Too many people trying to copy Steph definitely has ruined the game. Teams are so dependent on 3s now that they are playing “accidental” ball as Kobe would put it.
Here’s a fact. When Jordan was at his peak from 1991 to 1998, the only HOF SGs who were in their primes who Jordan had to matchup against on both sides of the court were Clyde, Mitch Richmond, and Reggie Miller. None of those players are considered the top 5 at the SG position outside of Jordan. This in and of itself implies that at a minimum, Jordan was matched up against watered down talent at his position.

It takes an INSANE amount of skill to shoot like Steph and handle the rock like Steph. If you gave Steph, Shaq’s size and he maintained his skills, he’d be the greatest player of all-time. If you gave Shaq Steph’s size and he maintained his skill, he probably wouldn’t make the league. With Jordan and LeBron the gap is closer, but the same applies. Actually, I think it is quite the opposite. How do you 90's fan not understand the concept of expansion?- Players were drafted off current teams. Creating vacancies on those very teams, in which players not already in the league were needed, to fill those spots. What does this mean? Rosters were weaker across the league, with players who were not NBA-caliber without the expansion. Lastly, if you think players have not evolved in the sport in terms of skill & versatility in 30 years- you are too lost to even understand logic.

Sheed has a great point about the age of the players: When Mike was in his day, nobody came out of high school, and few were leaving college early. The ones that did, still played in college for 3 years. You didn't have loads of kids in the league that were younger than many college players. You had grown men. The average age of NBA players is a couple of years younger now. And that's even with having a lot of older players. They can play longer now in large part due to the lack of physical defense. You don't take bumps your whole career, you're in better physical shape by the time you're in your upper 30's. It's not the conditioning, either, because the NFL's average age right now is less than a year younger than it was 20 years ago. Basically hasn't changed. It's still physical. NBA isn't.
Bonzi just said something that I rarely hear people say about the goat argument. Lebron has always relied on physicality and never had the skill set of Jordan and Kobe! Lebron’s skills in Jordan or Kobe’s body, we’re not even having this conversation of him in a goat debate. Jordan or Kobe’s skills in Lebron’s body and the shit wouldn’t even be fair!
I know I've used this argument many times. This is the same reason Centers aren't typically in the "G.O.AT" conversations. They have skills...yes. But their offense is limited and they're able to dominate bc of their size advantage. So we just compare centers to other Centers or big men. So I agree with everything you said💯.
But it’s irrelevant because Lebron doesn’t have Jordan body and Jordan doesn’t have Lebrons body😂 it really doesn’t matter how you score or how you play the game period. At the end of the day what have you accomplished, what have you won, what awards have you won. Kobe doesn’t belong in the goat conversation unfortunately. Only Kareem mj and Lebron really have a case
@@fatality1249 Kobe has more of a case because the media post 1999 has had an agenda when voting for MVP. Kobe was punished for Colorado and the League won't admit to that. They protected Lebron by annointing Igoadala FMVP

LeBron goes to Miami to play for a chip and Cleveland is left to rebuild. They get Dion Waiters (is he still in the league? No) Kyrie, Tristan Thompson (meh) Anthony Bennett (they passed up Giannis for this draft bust as the 1st pick of the draft) and Andrew Wiggins (mid). Bron goes back to Cleveland and wins a ring and has been in the finals repeatedly. He had to leave the team he didn't want to leave not only to win but for the team to actually get talented players and trade pieces and Cleveland couldn't even get that right!
The thing about comparing the era’s that people never mention is the training. Look at the training we have now compared to then? Do we not think previous era’s wouldn’t be better with today’s training?
not necessarily. tho they do more resistance training with bands now versus weight lifting from back then. ( which i had heard an old trainer talk about when a certain player (i forgot who) had gotten multiple injuries last year). along with how much younger they are starting to play competitive bball. but i will agree that the eras have a difference in health and sports medicine. perhaps applying todays medicine to yesterday’s players would make them even scarier.

Absolutely correct. They did 2 a day’s and hit the weights back then. Our high school coaches in the nineties had us lifting weights. Now? Ever since JJ reddick was on espn, I think he was an idiot. Now that he has a podcast, I still don’t listen to him. Even with Lebron being as big as he is, he can get a lot of ticky tacky foul calls. MJ’s era didn’t have those foul rules that allows for Lebron to thrive now.
@@wilcee238 you are correct about MJ having his own “rules”. tho i hope you know i was referring to official nba rules like giving a shooter space to shoot…
It's not just ticky tack fouls. It's literally made up fouls and calls he gets all the time. He's also aloud to offensive foul his way through defenders.
Lebron played in 30 team league entire career. MJ played in 23 team league for 4 years 25 team league one year, 10 years 27 team league, last five years 29 teams.

They could be coached, not catered to.
With all the diva injuries and load management, I’d say today’s league is more watered down on a per game basis.
6 new expansion teams from 88-96. that's 90 players in the league who wouldn't be. watered down by definition.
Not to mention these weak ass rules, and no more hand checking or barely touching a player gave lebum the advantage to start flopping… 🤦🏽♂️

If you gave MJ LeBron’s build and he kept his same skill set he would have been even better which is legitimately scary to think about. Glen Rice wasn't on the hornets 1st playoff team I believe... I may be wrong tho
The difference at this time each team had at least 2 legitimate Allstars. These days, everyone is considered an Allstar because of how inflated the stats are. Back in the 90s scoring 20ppg was Allstar level...not 20ppg is 3rd option because of how easy it is to score

Isaiah was the only person who smashed MJ, Smashed Bird/McHale, smashed Magic / Kareem, yet they give him no credit and always point to MJ... Jordan didnt beat any of them...
But Jordan beat Isaiah so...
Context matters. Jordan once he had a squad around him dominated Magic lakers and Isiah pistons they didn’t just beat the Pistons they swept their asses. Testament to how good the Bulls were. Not to mention all the other teams the Bulls went through. Nobody stood a chance when they were at full steam.
Don’t even think of saying Magic was old neither. He was only 31 and he was putting up big numbers in playoffs. Beat that stacked warriors team in 5 games and averaged 26 10 and 13 on them to get to finals. Even if Pistons did beat Magic and Bird Isiah still ain’t on their level. This season, teams got to play the Pistons (who had one of the longest losing streaks in NBA history) and Wizards. The Trail Blazers, Spurs... the Grizzlies had their entire team injured and played multiple games with pretty much G-League players and 10 day contract players. Is this era watered down? Just silly. NBA isn't.

@@smokinjoe006 Great point 💯!
@@fatality1249 I get your point but that was only an analogy to speak to what bonzi wells was saying. Lebron has accomplished a lot because he’s always been a bigger guy for his position. No knock on his legacy, just facts.
I only played with one NBA player in my life. It was Cliff Livingston. He wasn’t an all star player but he was so much better than anyone else I’ve played with and he was just a role playet in the league.

@@CoachVFitness very sober. There's a difference between serious contenders and fun teams to watch.

You 90s haters just keep proving you don't know what the hell you're talking about. 😂😂😂 In the 90s the Heat had Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway Sr. and they won over 50 games twice and lost to the Bulls.
@@psychedelicvault6951 The LeBron left Cleveland argument is getting old. LeBron left Cleveland in 2010 when the CELTICS BIG 3 were still dominant in the East. LeBron left a Cavs team that wasn't drafting well because they were winning 50-60 games, had has been players like Big Z Shaq Antwan Jamison and Ben Wallace on the team and didn't really have a supporting cast outside of Mo Williams who LeBron made an All Star...The Cavs didn't have much trade capital to get another superstar and lets be real...who wants to go to CLEVELAND to win a championship when you can go to NY Miami LA or the Bulls to contend for a championship AND get more endorsement dollars to make up for what you're not making on the team.
@@dvandal674they not talking about just physical training. Skills trainers are more prevalent, a system in the gym that shows you how to better your shots cause it got cameras all in there telling you your trajectory needs to be hire to up your percentage a little. Also better understanding of diet and recovery.
@@Rayathontv The understanding of training, diet and recovery are all worse today than in the 80's.
Absolutely correct. They did 2 a day’s and hit the weights back then. Our high school coaches in the nineties had us lifting weights. Now? I have friends that are high school coaches….no weight lifting….
We always played ball, this generation has many more distractions that pull them away from being pure gym rats like we were playing in the 90’s
All this era shit is dumb for old heads to get up in arms about change. All dominant players from every era would dominate in any era. Its a mindset to be great. These lames in the comments don't understand that.
The league was watered down but we have a playin league now. Players are consistently hurt, and most of the skills that we see were called traveling, carrying, and double dribble back in da day.
Facts. It has become nearly unwatchable honestly...

Mj played against more hall of fame players than are playing now.
What?! You couldn’t even touch MJ! He had his own rules!
@@dvandal674 That's fair.
Delusional take
Does JJ want to talk about the kids coming out of high school and now 1 year removed from college watering today's NBA now
Lebron played in 30 team league entire career. MJ played in 23 team league for 4 years 25 team league one year, 10 years 27 team league, last five years 29 teams.
And teams tank more than ever to get good players. So in JJ Reddicks mind teams who are actually competing but just don't have top tier talent are worse than teams who are losing on purpose who also don't have top tier talent
It wont matter by context lebron 75% career he deal with 7th -16th top teams in playoffs since east was so trash. If lebron is in west having the same personnel, cavs will get eliminated most of the time than reaching the finals

@Oldasianguyyou clearly don’t comprehend how an expansion draft works. They drafted from a pool of players already in the NBA, they didn’t just add 90 of the best players they could find off the street with no NBA experience.

Bonzi said MJ didn’t have the physical advantages. He is one of the most athletic players to ever play and his hands are like mitts. If he said that about Kobe I would agree.
The problem with JJ is that he argued when there were only 8 teams in the Bill Russell era, they were plumbers & electrians playing.
Then he argues the Jordan era was watered down with 32 teams. 😂
