Responsibility does not solely rest with Silver; it also lies with the players and the metrics. NBAPA is a partner of the NBA, and they dictate how the game is played. The marketing numbers said fans were more attracted to scoring than the 'Bad Boys' defense. Sports science experts advised management on the importance of rest days for optimal performance. The scoring metrics told coaches that shooting 3s would be better than 2s.The combination of all these factors made the game the way it is.

During the 80's and 90's and early 2000's, games were were tougher, more defense oriented, but the scoring was decent.
Also, more players played 82 games regular season.
With the advancement of of sports medicine, players today play less games and rest more.
How many players in recent years played an 82 game regular season?
GOAT Jordan did it 9 times in a 15 season career including in his last season in 2003.
      Jordan......The GOAT.....Playing 82 Games?
Why? Because he is the most competitive mother!!!!!
      The game was made SOFT.
      Now Players Are Soft.
The NBA is no longer a competitive league. It is now more for "entertainment" and gambling.
The NBA is Now like the WWE (except for gambling).
The Last Great Champion Team is the 2014 Spurs.
That Team was the last of the Old School and The Beginning Of The Current Style.
The NBA is boring now and the best players are Europeans.

I don't see the fascination with grabbing and hand checking, and there's still incentive to shoot close to the basket. You just have to make a high percentage for it to be worthwhile. I'm a Cavs fan, and Jarrett Allen shoots every shot within four feet of the basket. He makes 70% of them, so it's valuable, but if he were only shooting 50%, it would be a bad shot compared to a three. Also, shorter shots are almost always congested, whereas many threes are shot without a hand in the face.

What would Michael Jordan have done in today's game? I'm not sure he would be all that special if he couldn't shoot a mid-range shot. I’m a person who’s been watching NBA basketball ever since the early 70s before they even had breakaway rims. i’ve seen all kinds of changes to the game, in my opinion, when James Naismith invented basketball, I believe he designed it as more of a sport to have a team of five on the court to prevent the opponent from getting the ball through the hoop so that would suggest that it was defensive oriented.. I have absolutely no problem with offense, even if it comes in bunches, but it is unwatchable when you see the game going one-sided with players doing the same thing over and over and the opponents not doing anything about it. it’s even worse when high profile players purposely sit out games just because they can. There are 82 contest a season, not including the playoffs so people definitely feel a certain way when they can’t see their favorite player out there to perform, especially when they paid hundreds of dollars to go see them. what needs to come back to the NBA is more of a versatile game that favors both sides of the ball, the rules definitely have to be readjusted to favor both the offense as well as the defense. As far as what athletes could have played and whatever, I think, if you have the skills to be a professional basketball player, you should also have the ability to make adjustments, the one thing I will say is that with every era , players become alarmingly, bigger, faster, and stronger to go along with better technology. but being better goes along with your talents and not necessarily your era

Rick Barry gave far too simplistic of an answer. “If they can shoot 3’s, take away the 3”? If you extend your entire defense 25 ft, the lane defense is gone. It would be a dunk fest. You can only pick one or the other. Also, look at a guy like Steph. He’s rip Hamilton with far better range and a far quicker release, needing a microsecond of daylight to get off a shot from anywhere. You can’t just take that away, not that level of skill.

Wilt was better than Russell. Russell and the Celtics won all those championships because of game plan. The thing is, nobody can stop a player like Wilt, Kareem, Shaq, etc. one on one. You have to use smarts. Like the Bulls and Rodman against Shaq.

Hahah, yep! All the young kids trying to jack up threes like they Steph Curry, but A) They haven't nearly put in the work, and B) Most didn't grow up around the game with an NBA father.
But if we do coach youth, at least we can try to re-direct the kids to learn the fundamentals, learn roles, best for each player's size, strength and abilities. Discourage the threes. You can tell your youth team: "Anybody jacks up a three pointer in a game, but they can't make 8 out 10 threes in practice, they cost the whole team. Next practice is all about post game and mid-range. We ain't shooting threes for a while."
I dunno, maybe other people have another way to encourage the young kids to learn the game the right way, the old school way?

I was born in the 90’s and I can remember basketball then being in New York as I’m 32 now and I agree with the legends!
I embrace the 90’s and 2000’s game because they played defense! They played competitive and also the game is diverse. You had mid range, big men in the post, defense and effort heck all of this mattered as a whole!

You have guards that can play sf.Then most of all the players in this era can dribble and shoot. Yeah they travel alot and don't get called but I rather they travel, then try to hurt someone for going to paint cause that's the only way to stop them. That some weak ass shit.

Played ball all through highschool and university growing up in the Bird vs Magic era. That is how I like the game. I realize everything evolves in life, in sports, and that includes, in the game of basketball. So, I'm not sure if it is today's game or the work ethic of today's players that has turned me off the game. There are no more "men" like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Isiah Thomas etc., players who turned up every night, ready to work a full 48 minutes. It did not matter if they had a hangnail, a headache, or a fractured cheekbone, they had a job to do, and they did it. I find today's game boring, it is just a 3 point contest. Period. Full stop. For me, I'm not interested anymore because "the game has gone out of the game".

Because back then there weren't - after all - such attractions off the court as there are now. Back then only basketball mattered. There wasn't as much money. People go crazy when they get money, they prefer off-court glamour, red carpets, etc. Today the NBA is a show in RS, lack of commitment, lack of defense, ASG is a joke! Serious play only begins in PO. Once the players of opposing teams were enemies, today they are friends patting each other on the butts and giving high fives after matches. Zero aggression, balls and a desire for revenge for a lost match. Total fun. But what's important! Because of how the game looks now - fun in the NBA, the USA is weaker and weaker on the international stage. In Europe they defend themselves, in the NBA they don't defend themselves. In the NBA a guy hits 15 three-pointers, in Europe it's unthinkable because he would have left the court a long time ago. In Europe there is no fucking ISOLATION! And in the NBA he hits one across the entire court and plays to himself. In the US it may be funny but someone watching it in Europe can't believe such shit, sorry. Apart from PO there's nothing to watch, seriously. You want to see doggedness and balls? Watch the FIBA Champions League. There's been no balls in the NBA for at least a decade!
PS.. I'm also surprised by the refereeing in the NBA - pharmacy. It's the referees (and therefore the NBA authorities) who are to blame for taking away the players' balls. You punish them with penalties for anything, taking away their manhood. Give them back their balls!!!! You're taking away the players' manhood, which is already dying out. You can't wave your hand because you'll get a technical and a 100k fine for anything. You can't fart during a game because you'd even punish them for it, because it's so unethical. And that's why they run around like xxxx. Nothing is allowed in this NBA anymore. The guy's a pussy... There's more balls in the WNBA already... Give the fans back the 90s and 2000!!!! and finally start defending!!!!

Some points that the old guard has made in this video are 100% valid. My big issue is that I’ve done some of my own research. I grew up watching basketball around 2008. Since then, even with that brief time I’ve seen the nba change a bit. But I kept hearing how the nba use to be. So thanks to RUclips you can go back and watch pretty much any team ever play. The biggest lie that I feel like is being fed to people is how physical the game use to be. And how defense you to be sooooo much better. After watching games from the 80s and 90s especially it’s clear to see that tho you could get away with harder fouls and not get ejected from the game, but fouls were called if guys barely even bumped into each other. I have personally watched multiple games of Michael Jordan’s Bulls play the Detroit pistons. My actual thoughts were how easy it was for both sides to get calls. Sure you could basically punch a guy and get away with it, but when it came to just straight up defending a guy. If you really bumped them at all that whistle was blowing. In todays NBA guys use there off arm. To create distance and seek out contact that previously would have just made the play dead by a whistle. I agree that at times in the modern era guys don’t always look interested and play to their max, but let’s not forget that it use to be illegal to double teams basically. You couldn’t just go help double for a sec or stand in between two defenders. During MJs time he knew if he was gonna be doubled and if so he could just pass the ball to the now open player. You’re lying to yourself if you don’t think that one rule instantly makes offense easier. My finally point is even though personally I’m not a huge fan of analytics the numbers don’t lie. The reason more and more threes are being taken. The reason less midrange shots are attempted are all because the league as a whole has gotten much more skilled. This is something the older generations don’t want to admit. A lot of role players back in the day may have been able to make in in the modern nba but not without a lot more work. You can’t just be a physical player anymore. You have to be fundamentally sound pretty much in every category these days just to make a roaster.
I love basketball and now and then I have to stop watching today’s nba and go back and watch older stuff just to refresh. Each era has its pros and cons. The nba constantly is evolving and you don’t have to like it lol it will continue to do so as long as there is a league.

You're hallucinating. NBA in the 80s and the 90s was way more physical. Centers and forwards were playing in the paint and were far more valued than nowadays. The problem is that in the late 90s, talented centers (Ewing, Mourning, Shaq, Mutombo, Olajuwon, Barley, Oakley, Coleman, Malone, Larry Johnson, etc.) came to lack, the game was getting boring... the 2000s shifted to a revival of "Jordan-style without Jordan" (Iverson, Kobe, Carmelo, then LeBron, etc.). The rupture was Curry during the 2010s. A genius. But then everybody are just trying to copy him, even big fellas... The 2020s are just a parody. Jokic is bringing some fresh air, but he is the only one... Thanks to some European players, the style has diversified but it's still quite boring.
