- In this video I diagnose and repair the driver's side door handle on a 1996 Ford F0150 pick up truck. The inside door handle would "sometimes" open the door but often the owner had to reach outside and use the outer handle to open the door.
I took apart the door and discovered a stretched latch release cable as well as some previous repairs that were, shall we say, less than effective.
Join me as we make a quick fix and get this door to open properly.
Thank you! Here’s an idea that made it easier for me and I didn’t have to take the handle off: with the panel off, you can open the door handle and then set vice grips on the cable where the extra slack comes through, then wrap the wire around like this video. If you need more slack then let the handle close while the vice grips are on and repeat until you have the slack you need. I have a 1995 and it was harder to take the handle off but I didn’t end up having to. Thank you for the wire idea!
Thanks. A simple washer behind the thing solved it for me ! Great idea, Radio J !
Worked perfectly from my 94 Ford F250 Thanks so much for taking the time to post that save me a lot of money
Good video. I just fixed my door handle this morning. Mine had ripped completely out of the sheet metal of the door. I put a steel plate behind the original hole, attached the threaded clip and it was just that easy. The cable assembly was fine and still in place so O got off easy. Works great now. I also replaced the lock cylinders while I was in there. Thank you for the video!
I just did your fix to my 95 and it works great. Thanks man
I'm glad I found your video you answered my problem with my door handle mechanism going to try to fix mine now. Great video.
I have the same problem with the sheet metal of the door. It was probably cut because the sheet metal had broken out like mine has. I wasn't sure what to do about it until I saw this video. Now I can do this easy fix so I can get my door handle working again!!! Thank you Handyman Journal!
You are most welcome, glad you found the video useful!
My driver’s door on on my ‘94 F150 got to the point where it wouldn’t open from the inside.. This little fix made it work like new! I imagine at some point I’ll bust the cable and have to fork over the $20, but until then, this works great!!! thanks!!!
Just fixed my bronco before I watched this. The sheet metal was cracked. Beat it back into place and welded all the cracks. Fixed it right up. A little while longer and the pieces would have fallen into the doir like this truck.
Excelent video!!! Explained Step by step, I own a similar Ford, I made a metallic handle,
It even passed the pre assembly test! Once reassembled, it failed to open. Next, I'll be adding a shim (as you did) and hope for the best! Thank you!!!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this video, the wire worked just fine with my old truck.
Thank you! My 93 flareside had the exact same issue. They cut a little notch out and everything. This solved my problems.
It broke from fatigue, I had the same problem. Great video!
Great video! Going to try this...never have done it before. Love your down to earth attitude especially with the dog interrupting! Got "stuck" inside my truck but got out the passenger door. Never entered my mind to roll down the window and open the door from the outside, which works. Ummm.....wish me luck!
Great video on how to fix a door did the same thing you did to fix mine and when your dog bark my dog bark so the dog was no problem kept my dog entertained
Thanks, you did a good job of frustration control when it came to the dog much more patience than I would have; Thanks
Thanks sir excellent video now I can fix it 🙏🏾
I love the dog! Scared my cat right out of the room
Thanks so much for this, I was going to get another handle, now I’ll look at mine like you did⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yup, I have both doors broken now on my 1995 F150. I suppose I'll have to tear mine apart, the passenger side is easy as it's just a broken handle. The driver's side is completely loose so I'm assuming that it has torn the little piece of metal off. I suppose the big washer fix will work or should I get out the welder?
Hi....I just put in a brand new cable and I still have to pull the plastic door handle maximum travel for the door to open. I tightened the bolt holding the door latch to make sure that it's tight. Even if I tried your wire mod the door handle is traveling about 2 1/2" before the door will open a lot of stress on the plastic handle...any help is appreciated.
This helped a lot thank you so much!
I cut off the piece that holds the plastic part of the cable and extended it with a welded piece of steel because of the extended cable. Moved the slotted holder about a half an inch.
Not enough dog barking comments. Great video.
So is the part that the wire was connected to the can that be loose cause on my truck it’s loose and I don’t know if it’s that or is the cable that might be stretched
I have a 1992 F-250, and my drivers door is stuck closed! The door panel is already off, due to other issues I've had. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance!
Thanks sir, that what exactly what i was thinking and it worked just fine.
Good instructional video, going to try on my 1996
Thanks, helped me with the same problem.
Dude your funny and the video is great. Have three dogs and know what you mean ....haha, the barking. if you weren't recording they would be quiet. Going to see if this works on my truck, same issues. thanks for the video
They make a replacement plate for the door its is a problem with the ford doors The hole for the nut goes wallers out
I get right in and out of my 96 dodge. Never had this Ford problem
I too like the taste of cocks.
No one "cut" the metal out. It was metal fatigue around the fastener...Common problem.
The metal is now for ripping out on the 96i had to make a back plate for min to hold it in place
My Door Cable was not quite like yours ,, I just pulled the Cable to the Outside of the Housing to give it a 1/4 inch pull and put a 3 inch square Stainless steel Plate behind .. all good to go now ..I have a pic, but can't post to this ..
Noooo. It was not cut, it broke away and was repaired by the washer! You assume a little too much
I used self tapping screws cus the metal on the door ripped off
They make a repair plate to fix the broken metal of the door handle.
Who and where?
@@brionmiller504 if you're still looking Bronco Graveyard
Check out Diesel Power Products out of Spokane WA. They carry lots of door repair parts.
Tommy?
looks like a peice of the steel broke on the door and fell in
If you don't even know about the washer behind the damn door what are you doing doing videos
There is No adjustment with the Handle overall !!!!!!Makes No difference where the cable sits ,, What you have to do is get the slack out of the Cable when you Position the Cable in he Housing, . What I did was simple ,, I routed the Plastic casing on the outside of the Grappler,, and then Put wire around it to Keep it from popping Out ... You could also bend slightly to he left the Housing, but my fix works better..
Thanks for the video it helped a lot!
