From my 92 I removed all the a/c and heater components including condenser and wiring, removed the rear tank, fuel lines and wiring too, put an electric fan with a switch, a fuel pump with a switch too, set the timing on 10 degrees, and yes,the 302 still working very good 👍🏻
I worked for Ford for a number of years and another big problem I found is the connections going into the fuel pump relay get corroded and break. It's located under the hood on the drivers side. The pigtail is green. I've replaced many of them. So if you have a crank no start condition check the fuel pump relay and direct wiring before messing with the fuel pump.
My 92' f150 5.0 is at 440k, was my grandmothers truck who raised me. The fuel tank selector switch pigtail can become corroded as well, small files and bending the wire terminals end for a more snug fit fixed my 2 dead fuel pumps after buying replacements and a new selector switch.
93 f150 5.0 xlt with no rust and 96k miles. Honestly in love with my baby and I got it for $3,700 from a family friend. If you’re considering this truck, consider no more and buy that truck. You’ll love it🤘🏼
This is the best video ever made when it comes to quick ,and easy to follow, most common issues for this generation F150. I have a 1996 4.3 L manual transmission F150 it was my father’s truck ( he passed away last year )and you guys nailed it out of the park with this video. Props to my man that did the walk-through and presentation. I hope you are featured in more vids !Every Ford F150 owner of this generation truck should be forced to watch this video. You guys would save so many people a lot of heartache. Great job guys!
We used to have dozens of these style trucks in our work fleets at the time. I don’t know if it could be classed as a mechanical issue but they all had noisy, whiny power steering pumps.
Have 1994 XLT. Daily driver. Best truck ever; runs and very dependable. Has normal repairs like all vehicles. It looks and drives like new. Be keeping in mind the problems and fixes you have worked on!
I have a '96 F150 I bought in '97. 275k miles. All the issues he spoke about are true. The oil pan gasket is a nightmare. He didn't tell you about the process to replace the gasket. Also, who ever owns that truck doesn't deserve it. So much rust! They are not hard or expensive to maintain.
I've fixed all of these on my 93, truck was given to me 22 years ago and they told me it will need a transmission one of these days, we'll last year that day came, ordered a Transmissions from BestBuy Transmissions, their warranty is what sold me 5 year , 100000 mile warranty. Oh you for got the rusted fuel lines on your list.
1993 XL F-150 still drive it every other day. Been from NJ to South Dakota and back 4 times towing a Harley. NJ to Daytona 3 times in the last 4 years. Incredibly dependable. 4.9 - 5 speed manual. 💪
I just bought a 93 F150 XLT, 5.8, for $100. 105k miles, been sitting 8-10 years. No rust seen on body. Cylinders soaking in Marvel’s Mystery Oil…fingers crossed.
Love my 1995 Flareside F150. I've bought a few things from y'all. I'll need a few more for sure. Currently on my to-do list, find the vacuum leak, rear main seal, timing chain, replace ac unit, shock's, power steering. I've redone the interior on my channel.
I have a 93 F-350 with a 460/E40D 168k miles. Just re-sealed the engine she runs like a champ. The year I bought it I did the following: oil change w filter, transmission fluid and filter, t-case fluid, front axle fluid and gasket, rear axle fluid and gasket, right wheel bearing and U-joint, carrier bearing, and now the re-seal. I need to give it a new paint job and some upgrades.
From my '95 4.9l manual I learned the oil pan will not clear the pump due to frame member. Wait until you find out that you cannot raise the motor without removing the AC plenum. I went to a Ford dealership and paid them $500 to change oil pan and valve cover gaskets, but that was over 10 years ago. Today I'd just drop the pan as far as it will go and cut the new gasket once. Permatex.
This model, straight, clean, no rust and low mileage is now highly sought after by collectors. This model, in varying conditions, are coming out of the woodwork.
I could add a few more. Wobbly shifter with a manual (needs new shifter bushings). Door handles stop working from the inside. Loose dash board. Fluid leaks galore.
dude , there is no valve in the pump assemble to stop the return fuel from going into the wrong tank. The fuel selector valve on the frame rail serves this function. The valve directs the correct return for the fuel tank being used. These valves do fail and cause the non selected tank to overfill.
On The 4.9 the valve cover gasket will leak on the back side and make you think it was the oil pan or rear seal and is very common on the older ones. And is very hard to tell where it comes from. That's if you can tell at all and if you are unsure go with the valve cover frist. I learned that the hard way. ☺
I have a 1996 Ford F150, Four, 4 x 4. The drivers door latch wouldn’t open the door from the inside. I used 3-IN-1 Lock Dry Lube and it did the trick! I sprayed it in up all over around the doorhandle inside. It works like a charm now.
The EGR valve I agree is a problem area. My check engine light was on and I replaced the EGR valve. No more check engine light but now it has the occasional stalling problem. I think that if you put in a cheap aftermarket EGR valve it may not function perfectly.
I currently own 3 of these body styles. 92 F-150, 95 F-150, and a 95 F-350. I'm currently having an issue with the F-350. It was running fine whenever I pulled into a parking space, but whenever i started back up to pull out, the 5.8 developed a hard misfire. I did a complete tune-up replacing the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Nothing changed. I'm stumped. The motor only has 92K on it.
+@blmdh20s We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I gotta say. My oil pan leaks, my shackles have been replaced, my coil pack has been replaced. Luckily was not by me, but the last owner. But yes, these are very common problems.
Those tiny plastic vacuum lines are brittle and crack easily due to the age of the vehicle. I searched everywhere but no one makes replacements for them..... I have gotten to the point of hating to work on my '95 E150, every connection I take apart seems to break no matter how easy I am with it. Thankfully no rust anywhere, but basic stuff just shows that these parts can't handle the test of time. So tempted to yank the 302 and throw in a carbureted 4.9l inline 6 for simplicity.
I put 270K miles on a 92 with 5.0L straight 6. Truck was a beast that refused to die. Finally sold it have regretted get rid of it ever since. I had 5 f150 and that was the best one I ever owned.
I only owned 250s and 350s in that period. The problems I had terminal body and frame rot and ABS failures. Everything else was standard automotive maintenance mostly all pre electronics items like all other brands had. EGRs - bypassed or removed them and plugged whatever holes were left since NY didn't do a good state inspection then
i have now a 1996 F-150 fleet side 8' bed. 5 speed 4.9L Eddie Bauer... good truck has 219K now got it with 88K 12-29-2003... yep still running good, just replaced the ignition coil /cap/rotor/wires/spark plugs from the Ford Dealership.. i have replaced the radiator 3 times and heater core 2 times. and rear axle seals. starter 2 times ... but other then that is is a good truck so far... i get asked to sell it, but why but $100 K new truck that is junk... Haha... i am good with this one... i am a engine builder fleet manager and i got 2 brand new cylinder heads in storage now... waiting to be installed if needed... no smoke no burning of oil yet... Haha... i bought this truck because of the engine 300 cid inline 6 is by far the best engine ever. ups and fedx use these engines for years and wonder bread/ hostess cake trucks ran these engines for many years... no problems... yep ...... lots of other company too..
I have a 1995 F-250 with the 5.8 and I just rolled 361k miles on it (original engine). I've had it since new, 3000 mile oil changes and full service....never an issue. It's so far outlasted the radiator and transmission....not a fan of the factory trans in this F-250 and had a heavy duty rebuild. The transmissions behind these motors from the factory are made more for cars...plan on rebuilding the right way if you have one with a heavy duty rebuild. It's the ticket!
My fuel pump has went out twice, shackle broke, vacuum leak, ac doesn’t work, Speedo doesn’t work, steering column replaced, rust everywhere, but it’s all okay because my truck is purple.
@1AAuto So my problem is I have a 94 f150 and we can't get it to start. It cranks but it just drains the battery. We replaced the coil today and it's still doing the same thing and we've been using starting fluid too. What else could we do to fix this?
Had a 96 F150 with the 5.0l 5 sp manual tranny. My issue was when shifting. Start out, engage the clutch, shift from 1 to 2. RPMs would not drop on motor. When clutch released I got a little thump because tranny speed and engine speed not matched due to rpm's not dropping
I’m looking to buy a 95 f150 with 179K miles… anything to automatically change? Or to look at before buying? Anything besides the things listed? Thanks guys
I bought a 96 f150 4wd with the 5.8 in it in 96 and other than normal wear and tear like brakes and tune ups the only thing that gave me any issues was the fuel pump quit and I sold it with 279,000 miles on it and recently I just bought a 94 flare side 4wd 5.0 for $800.00 and it's pretty much got all these issues and more 🤣 good thing I'm a collision tech and mechanic.
Have had 4 of these trucks. Still have a 1992 with the 300" six. 245k miles. Replaced alternator twice, starter once, two tune ups. Original fuel pumps, coil, blend door. I live in the south, so rust is not a problem. Will keep it. Have had 3 chevys since I got the 92 F150. Got rid of them. Electrical problems, fuel pumps.
Only one of these I've had with my 95 is my front tank quit working. Sometimes it will pump if I haven't used it vin a while. Other problems I've had, distributor pick up ( my fault), rear end needs shimming and trans tail shaft cracked at the rubber support mount.
Hey 1auto I have a 94 4.9 litre f150 and I took out my spark plug on cylinder 6 and got oil on it. I put a new one and same thing happened. when I put it in reverse it bogs out of control and feels like it wants to turn off. any ideas what my park el could be?
Not here to argue but if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and love ford or the 302 models, the problems listed means it is a tank lol,, blend door actuator??? You still have the “nut cooler” triangle window lol
Today I learned that even if you don't have dual tanks and a switch, you still need that damn harness plugged into the back of the dash. If you don't your fuel guage will read way past full and your pump won't fire up
My 1992 f150 5.0 runs great BUT stalls out when I put it in reverse. I cleaned the IAC valve, cleaned the throttle body. Not know much about this truck. Any advice would be appreciated!!!
😂😂😂...Heck...These was E...Z...problems...Mines got weirder ones...Like "Crank, No Start with fuel pumps keeps priming...I overfilled the sliding driveshaft yoke with too much grease...Took most of it out, now I feel and it sounds like riding on Rumble strips when I slow down...Plus, it leaks water to the PCM at the front of the firewall...Like I said, yours was E...Z...Try mines if you want to fix Challenges...😂😂
Having a problem where my 96 blows cold air but only through the vents on the dash. Not from the center or floor and none of the controls for location work. Sounds like this could just be the blend door actuator??
I’m having problems starting mine. All it does is cranks. I have a 1996 f150 5.0 and I have replaced the crankshaft position sensor, ignition coil, solenoid, the whole distributor assemble, the voltage regulator is good. It has spark, the compression test came out to 90, and yet still no start all it does is cranks. The fuel pump kicks in and I already sprayed starting fluid in the intake and it does nothing. Im running out of options here. Pls help. I got the truck from this guy and he said that he drove it and he had troubles starting the truck, eventually it got to the point where it cranked, so he just parked it. Its been sitting for 10 years now. Last time I hauled it out of there and out of curiosity I decided to turn it on and it did, it lasted only for about 5 seconds and then it died, i turned the key a 2nd time and it died again, but ever since it just keeps cranking with no luck.

I just bought a 95 F-150 XLT super cab with 100k miles. With no rust. For 3grand. It rides nicer than my bmw. I have the 5.8 V8 i absolutely love it.
They should bring back these trucks and bring back the 300-6. They would sell like hot cake.
That's one of the best trucks ford ever made. I had two of them. still have one of them
From my 92 I removed all the a/c and heater components including condenser and wiring, removed the rear tank, fuel lines and wiring too, put an electric fan with a switch, a fuel pump with a switch too, set the timing on 10 degrees, and yes,the 302 still working very good 👍🏻

Perfect timing on this. Planning on getting ready to try fixing up my grandpa's old f150.

I believe that 300 inline 6 came out in the 50s and Ford continued making this motor to this day over 30 years it's still the best motor ever.

Woof. Some kind of crunchiness going on with that rear frame. Great video. 😉👍🏼
Just bought a 92 460 and it has an extended cab. Had a little car before but now I absolutely love my new big reliable truck..
Getting “this old house” nostalgia from this guy
Thanks for the bonus. That's where the noise I heard was coming from.

Thanks for this tip. I came to the comments looking for someone who is experiencing this oil leak issue. Gonna check the valve covers tomorrow
I have 570,000 on my 1996 F150. I have of course replaced the EGR valve occasionally but I haven't had any of the other problems ... (?)
I have a 1996 Ford F150, Four, 4 x 4. The drivers door latch wouldn’t open the door from the inside. I used 3-IN-1 Lock Dry Lube and it did the trick! I sprayed it in up all over around the doorhandle inside. It works like a charm now.
MUST add Ignition control module!!!
Just bought a '93, good punch list of stuff to look out for 👍🏻 Thanks!

Interior door handles. I have seen multiple truck of this generation with the interior door handles ripped from the door shell.
I put 270K miles on a 92 with 5.0L straight 6. Truck was a beast that refused to die. Finally sold it have regretted get rid of it ever since. I had 5 f150 and that was the best one I ever owned.
Find an old school spring shop if you can. They are good, fast and reasonable. Example: Stuver Auto Spring Co., Akron. Started in the 50's.
I only owned 250s and 350s in that period. The problems I had terminal body and frame rot and ABS failures. Everything else was standard automotive maintenance mostly all pre electronics items like all other brands had. Got 3 one 1991 f 350 so 4 all together 👍😁
Simple easy n. U just dumb it down for us special ad people thanks mister mechanic
I'm going to guess first.
1:IAC.
2:vacuum line to open the blend doors.
3:EGR
4:headlights switch.
5:fuel pump or fuel tank switch.
Well I got a few.
My fuel pump has went out twice, shackle broke, vacuum leak, ac doesn’t work, Speedo doesn’t work, steering column replaced, rust everywhere, but it’s all okay because my truck is purple.

Without watching- door handle breaking
Do you have a video just like this for a 1997 ranger?
What about a blinking check engine light?
😂 mine has 3 of the 6 problems they just identified.
I just bought one 😅1996 really cool truck XL 😢 downside the rust
My 93 f 150 crew cab 302 xlt, is 90% perfect but i needa do the starter
I've had to replace ignition modules more than coils
If your front tank is overfill does that mean the front fuel pump is not working correctly or the rear fuel pump?
My 1994 150,000 miles when I’m sitting still It revs up and down then it would die and now i got crank no start any suggestions please. Thanks
Great video for a first time pickup buyer. Thanks! Are these problems specific to 9th gen F-150s or all trucks of that era?
Thanks brother 👍🙂
Very informative!
Thanks great information
Whats the chances they parted out this here truck? I need a dash.
Alright I’m shopping 1A auto
Hello, What does the sound it makes at the beginning mean when it activates the ignition switch? I've seen that some do it like mine and others don't?
The broken shackles are common on Rangers too. I've had to fix them on two of my three rangers.
Ball joints. That front I beam suspension is known for eating ball joints wearing out the front tires
1 92 flareside 2 93 f150 reg cab 8 ft bed
Only one of these I've had with my 95 is my front tank quit working. Sometimes it will pump if I haven't used it vin a while. Other problems I've had, distributor pick up ( my fault), rear end needs shimming and trans tail shaft cracked at the rubber support mount.
Great videos! 👍 👍
Awesome help thank you
Hey 1auto I have a 94 4.9 litre f150 and I took out my spark plug on cylinder 6 and got oil on it. I put a new one and same thing happened. when I put it in reverse it bogs out of control and feels like it wants to turn off. any ideas what my park el could be?
I have a 94 f150 302 that feels sluggish when steeping on it also sounds like it’s farting in the exhaust. What may be my problem?
Not here to argue but if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and love ford or the 302 models, the problems listed means it is a tank lol,, blend door actuator??? You still have the “nut cooler” triangle window lol
the air conditioner isn’t a big deal because you can just open that small window thing on the door
+cringed out Thanks for the tip!
Just got a deal of a life time 95 f150 300 l6 for 500$and best part runs like a Cadillac
Today I learned that even if you don't have dual tanks and a switch, you still need that damn harness plugged into the back of the dash. If you don't your fuel guage will read way past full and your pump won't fire up
Great Video,
My 1992 f150 5.0 runs great BUT stalls out when I put it in reverse.
How many miles is this happening at? I found one at 90k for sale. Is this safe or no
I’m having problems starting mine.
+trillmexicanz We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
rear axle shackles should be #1
I have a 96. 4.9L. I need a new front tank but it looks like there are several different ones. Is there a way to know which one without pulling the tank ??
