    Bought a maintenance neglected 1991 F150 2wd 4.9liter last year for $850. It had what I thought was a manifold gasket leak, but turned out to have hairline cracks in the head and a pinhole in the block. $4800 for a remanufactured long block installed. I calculated how much I'm in all together this morning, $9600 for a straight non-rust rotted truck. My intention is to keep and use the truck, so now I know what I've got because I've put it all in.

      @@danbolton3180 WOW, sorry this took a year. I guess I never got notified of your second message. I think what happened is I replied to a comment on another video under your message by mistake and took it down. Anyway, yeah, that's a ton to have in a truck but you are right. It's sometimes better to know what you have. I'm struggling with that premise on a couple of my vehicles right now, lol. RUclips is a constant struggle of Content versus Value. It's easy to throw junk together for clicks but I want to build better vehicles so I have better vehicles and maybe the viewer learns along the way. Vice Grip and Junkyard Digs both know what they are doing but in the end you end up with dozens of vehicles that are slightly better than they were before getting pulled out of a field.

      I sold this 95 after 3 years of ownership. The guy I sold it to took excellent care of it but he sold it just a couple weeks ago. I've been looking for another one but no luck so far. My current truck is a 99 (OBS) Chevy Suburban, 3/4 ton 4wd.

    Man I just bought a 1994 Ford F150 and I honestly really like driving it. It's not bad. Everything works fine. It only has 102,000 miles on it. So it was hard not to wanna buy it. The only thing not so good about it is the gas mileage. It's pretty dang bad. Yeah you do get 2 gas tanks so you get more to go along. But man that needle goes fast. But it's an experience to drive. It was sorta on my bucket list to own and drive one. If I can get used to the gas milage. Otherwise it's a pretty great truck.

    • @shadygingergarage

      Most trucks are pretty hard on fuel, especially 4x4s. But what they are capable of makes the trade off worth it. My 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban is hard on fuel but has seating for 7 and pulls a trailer.

    I'm 15 and looking at a 1994 f150 XL 4x4 5 speed inline 6/ 4.9 203k miles decent shape a few chips in paint a few small dints but I just want a truck that's 4x4 and i don't mind scratching it. My dad has a 97 f250 diesel 7.3 with 5 speed and 130k miles and I have a 93 f150 2wd with 63k miles with the 5.0. Thanks for the video I knew a few places to check but this added to my arsenal. Thank you. And the only thing I don't like about the 4.9 is thee sound can't beat the rumble of a V8.

    • @shadygingergarage
      @shadygingergarage  2 года назад +1

      Yes but Ford's 4.9 sounds SO MUCH BETTER than GMs 4.3 and is also much tougher. As for price, $3500-$4000 is the going rate in my area, yours may be different. Of course get the truck as cheap as you can keeping in mind there are always unforseen issues with older vehicles.

      @tndeerhunter8216 2 года назад +1

      @@shadygingergarage yep my dad is also looking it over and thank you for the information. I'll try to get it cheapas I can of course. The guy has no attachment to it and he just bought it from a friend that needed money. It's very clean as far as dirt and grime and everything only one visible rust place and it's in the bottom rear corner of the inside door "jam" on driver side but it's about what I'm looking for in a hunting/fishing/ work truck. Thank you Sir.

    Amen to the standard transmission. I have a 1990 F150, inline 6 cylinder automatic transmission. I wished mine was older so it would have a carburetor and I prefer a standard transmission. Fuel injection, computer, serpentine belt, and and sensors I can do without.

    They're going for about $8k-$20k for the 4x4 models in my area (southern california) . I found a decent shape 95 for $8K (he dropped it down from 12k in the ad) i'm not sure if its even worth $8k by looking at prices from 1-2 years ago. I might just consider a 10th gen 4x4 with less miles, they're going for 4k-6k for the 4x4 models since they're not desirable due to the looks.

    just two cents, if the front leaf spring bracket is that difficult to replace, why would you not get access to it, wire brush and wire wheel it clean and put a stop rust product on it to prevent it from continuing to degrade?

    I’m looking at a 7 grand 97 7.3 300 thousand miles, if I drive it a bit down the road to feel the transmission out how do I trust it won’t konk out 5 days later? Is it possible to feel fine and 5 days later die? Or will you be able to feel it’s only got 5 days left

    • @shadygingergarage
      @shadygingergarage  Месяц назад

      Pay close attention to how it shifts. If it shifts too hard or thuds into gears when it shifts, it's got a problem. Also, if it slips between gears, it's got a problem. Slipping usually sounds like the engine is suddenly climbing rpm for too long without gaining forward momentum. Also, a transmission slip can present as a "hunting" behavior. This is where the transmission seems to be hunting for an upshift or a downshift. Of course, being an old truck, there are no guarantees. It could run perfect on the test drive and then completely shut the bed a week later. This happened to me on not one, but two Ford Tauruses, a year apart from each other. Had both cars at the same time. Blue one shit the bed a week after purchase without warning. I sold my F250 to fix it. Then, six months later my green Taurus did the same thing after 18 months of ownership. I promptly sold the green one. Then, 5 months later the blue Taurus threw a transmission code. I threw in the towel and sold it as well.
