    As a 52 yr old sheet metal tradesman I’d recommend someone who has never welded sheet metal to a day or 2 practicing with slow/fast wire speeds and low/high power to get a true feel for welding car body metal. Chris is making this sound a lot easier than it actually is. Practice will mean you don’t need to repeat the job. My new apprentices spend a month (a least) practicing before they touch a customers job.

      I've always been afraid of welding, but I was thinking something similar. I've seen enough and read enough to know about welding that its not THAT easy, and especially once you get close to structural joints around suspension. But I think idiots do need to take responsibilty if thinking using super high heat and melting metal is just something you 'pick up and start doing'.
      But anyting being welded I think thats worth mentioning, do some prep work and maybe take a course or ask a mechanic to watch some welding. My mechanic who just welded my exhaust says he doesn't do body welds, find somebody who does. I like DIY, but welding is definitely not something to make sound TOO easy just because you can find cheap equipment. Its sort of like electrical, yeah you can do it but there's a reason why it takes about six years to get a red seal. But I did like his energy.

      I had a blast welding with brand new mig with automatic wire speed and automatic mask. I had only 2 hours of practice and getting my self familiar with that mig. After that welding was so simple because that mig made it easy. I get what you mean tho 😊

      I’ve been welding on and off for the past 14 years and I remember learning from my grandpa when I like 7. I found it pretty easy and I think anyone can learn how to do it. Ofc I don’t weld professionally so my quality of work that I can live with may not be suitable for others.

      That's right. When I did my welding course, all we used were nice big pro mig welding machines running on 3 phase electricity and using thick steel plates. Nice big, clean welds with tons of easy, beautiful looking, full penetrating beads .
      When I first tried doing my first car job I was literally back to square one! None of the techniques I'd learned really worked effectively. Holes, spatter, fires even 😬.
      I call automotive welding dirty welding cos I always make a right dirty mess of it. 😊

    Awesome video! I've been a welder for over 20 years, specializing in TIG, MIG, MAG, and stick welding. When working with thin metal, I position the welding gun at an angle away from the puddle. This way, you don't add too much heat to the plate, resulting in a flatter weld and less grinding afterward. For metal over .38 inch , I point the gun at an angle into the puddle. Just some tips!

    EXCELLENT WORK! This is one of THR BEST RUclips tutorials I have ever seen. I'm an older guy, I have done some of this work before and I Iearned SO MUCH.
    Your style is GREAT. No BS and random chatter, clear, articulate and friendly. Well edited! It's also apparent that you are not reading the material , which leads to a stiff-sounding presentation. On top of all of that, you have a very positive way of making challenging work seem very approachable to beginners. This is a truly rare skill. And you don't gloss over anything (which can be so frustrating)
    Lastly, the amount of REALLY useful tips you throw out like popcorn is really amazing. The vent techniques, disconnecting the battery, proper grounding for the weld, the flashlight trick....so useful. Honestly, I have never contributed to a RUclips creator before, but I'm going to send you a few bucks. And subscribe. Thanks so much for a truly excellent presentation. Five stars.

Excellent display of the basics and how to solve a simple issue, the only thing id have to add is that when you go to stitch the panel, to make it look as flush as possible and keep distortion to a minimum: I like to skip around each corner of the panel with one/two stitches and everytime ive passed 4 corners ill stop, wait 7 minutes to allow the metal to cool for a bit. Really allows you the option to take the beads down with a sanding flap to appear flush with the shape of the paneling around it👍

    FYI your mig welder’s wire spool is upside down, the wire should have a natural, strait line, for all you English speaking readers, the wire shouldn’t be bent, and is so, a little bend. For all the people who still don’t understand, the wire needs to come off the spool from the bottom on this specific welder, the manual is a true legend for dangerous equipment, look it throughout. Btw I think you had your weld settings almost perfect, if you look at the tack welds, you’ll notice a little dot, we call that a fish eye, it indicates (for me) perfect or near perfect settings, so good job man! Helpful how-to’s always are needed!

    My criticisms:
    - You can use flux core for this application with the technique you've shown. It is much more tolerant to wind and contaminants and much cheaper to run.
    - Your tack weld had a crater in the middle. Stay on the weld a little longer.
    - Your first stitch weld had a void in the top right.
    - You really should wear leather gloves for welding. Vinyl can melt to your hand and gives no protection against heat or UV cooking your skin.
    Still, good stuff, enjoyed the video and you showed good technique.

    As a girl, my dad and grandpa never really included me in fixing things or working on cars as much as they included my brother. I'm now 18 and have decided to learn it on my own. Thank you for teaching me Chris :)

    • @whysoserious7014
      @whysoserious7014 2 года назад +18

      That's not fair.
      If you were my daughter you would've been welcomed and encouraged to join under the hood and invited to get greasy with the brothers.
      Ive always said every girl at least should know how an automobile mechanically basically works (how the parts interact with each other and trouble shot problems) besides put gas in it and turn the key. So they don't get ripped off if they do decide to take their car to a shop.
      Good for you even if you have to research and learn on your own. Hey, just a suggestion look into learning some welding also it's useful knowledge and skill too, to go along with the automotive learning. Amazon has some welders at affordable prices. Yes welder brand seem to have decent welders at excellent prices that's good for beginner or homeowner use, with good reviews by RUclips reviewers. Plenty of video tutorials out there. Just putting the idea out there if interested.

      I would add to what others said, Don't feel down when it doesn't work out the first time. If something doesn't work out, chances are there were others who have done what you're trying to do so ask around, especially on forums if one is available or a fan club of your specific car. If you give up early you will NOT improve. Also, with the skills you pick up from working on your vehicle you get a chance to find a part time job at a mechanic shop if you wanted to. Good luck!

    If you find yourself with that “keyhole” shape burning through, definitely turn up that wire feed speed(wfs), or turn down the voltage a tad. Essentially, turning up the wfs uses more power, and “cools” the weld. And of course, turning down voltage also achieves this same effect.

    Little tip to make the 2 pieces line up perfectly easily and quickly. once you have the new metal roughly sized, clamp it or even tack it in place then use a cut-off wheel held on a 45* angled towards middle of the new metal and cut through both new and old. This is done to make it so you don't have a gap once it's done being cut. Works fast and it's easier to weld as it has characteristics of a lap joint.

    • @dutchlizardgaming7269
      @dutchlizardgaming7269 2 года назад +9

      Nice tip that is, it's a skill in it's own I guess. For a noob like me that seems hard because of the shapes and tight corners. But if you master it I imagine it get some nice fits!! If you use this technic you clamp or tack it on top of the old isn't it. First on the bottom side to draw the rough shape and then put it on top, clamp or tack it and then use your technic to cut it nice in shape. Sorry for my bad English, I hope you understand what im saying/asking! Cheers

    • @richcombs4805
      @richcombs4805 Год назад +8

      @@sfuchs if the new piece lays on top of the original, you'll be cutting the original more in-board, and the new will lay down onto it. Try drawing this on paper ...and you might have cutting a wood board at a 45 angle in mind where you'd end up with a gap equal to the saw blade width, but if you picture two boards laying on top of each other, cutting through both, you find the bottom board captures the top board.

    When stitch welding, there’s no shame in adding another tack in between each original tack, this really helps with heat balance to prevent warping. On top of that, it makes it so you don’t have to stop in between each bead being laid; ergo no time for a bead to get too hot resulting in burn-through. For a beginner this is good work. P.S. make sure to focus on fusing the two metals instead of being afraid of burning through, although it’s very important not to burn through, solid fusion is the main point of a weld. Nice work!
