    Hey Chris, just wanted to let you know how much of an impact you've had on my life. I didn't know what I wanted to do as a career and you have shown me the basics of being a mechanic so I'm going to college in the fall to learn more :)

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  6 лет назад +2360

      Awesome man! Just follow what you are passionate about and you will go far and be happy. Hey, being a mechanic might not be something you want to do as a career but everything you learn in school is still useful since you will always need to fix your own car. That’s like me an culinary school. I went to culinary school, was the top of my class and then decided I wanted more of a family life and working every holiday when the restaurant is the busiest is not the best way to do that. Now look at me! I’m a RUclipsr trying to teach/help as many people as I can. Unfortunately as a RUclipsr all I do is work but I love what I’m doing at least!

    Hey Chris….here’s a neat trick for the letters that takes WAY less time than cutting tape.
    Get a small and cheap hobby paint brush and brush a light coat of Vaseline over the letters. Paint the valve cover like usual. When the paint is dry, brush over the letters with a lint free cloth and the paint will come right off perfectly every time.

    A good cheap home spray booth is a beach changing tent. Often they are pop-up and big enough to stand in, and move around a bit.
    Hang a good light in it, cut a hole in the side and add a box fan with an air filter and you're done.
    Open the door, put your piece inside on a box or hang it from the top if it's small, and if it's cramped just stand in the doorway and spray... of course wear a good respirator, and eye protection and you're all set!
    Hope this helps anyone interested, I built one of these for my mom who restores small furniture pieces and she loves it. It folds up and takes up no space when it isn't being used.

    • @DanteYewToob
      @DanteYewToob 6 лет назад +28

      Also (this one is mostly for Chris, or people with a vinyl cutter.)
      You can make custom tape decals by getting good quality masking tape, as wide as possible. Lay it down on a sheet of wax paper, then stick that down to your cutter mat. Run the program and weed your masking design... then just put it where you want and bam! No wasting expensive vinyl to use for masking. This way you can make hundreds of small decals per roll.. also, masking tape comes in large sheets, or use 3D printer masking tape, they come in 12in rolls, so you can make larger designs.
      Again, hope this helps anyone.

    Once again very sound advice for very professional results. I have been a painter for the past 35 years, I've used all the equipment a professional painters uses, ie: cup gun hvlp, cap sprayer, electrostatic, airless, preval sprayer, rattle cans, brushes rollers etc. The main attribute that Chris has is the desire to do the job correct and to get pro results. He has patience, without it you will not get good results. Outstanding job and amazing results. Great video for DIY. Well done.....

    If you want to go even further beyond and make it look professionally done, there a few things Chris left out. There were some rusted spots on the heat shield that were heavily pitted it was still noticeable after the paint job. Depending on the type of material, you can use different types of body filler and sand it down to make a smooth surface before applying paint. There was also a lot of orange peel left on his valve cover which can be removed by doing an extra coat of clear coat followed by sanding and polishing with compound. I know most people don't care about going above and beyond with the looks of the internals of a car but to get that show car look there are a few extra steps. Love your work Chris!

    Nice! One quick tip that I feel is important with rattle can work. I always turn my can upside and spray to clear nozzle between coats and after last coat for storage and wipe outside of nozzle so spray pattern remains consistent and doesn't bounce off excess paint buildup/crud around nozzle. I also shake really well and often. Sometimes, I warm the pieces in oven on very lowest oven setting on cold days and have been known to either let sun warm paint can or set can in hot water for a few minutes to gently warm paint (NO BOILING WATER) Wipe water off can thoroughly so water doesn't drip on to your fresh paint. Thats it, thanks Chris, love your videos!

    So I am sure you probably have heard this a million times before, but you have taken an amazing gift for explaining complex processes and breaking them down, with an incredible dedication to detail in your filming, voice overs, and editing.
    I have a small YT channel and I know first-hand how time-consuming it is to make a video. It takes so much longer than most people would think, and with the level of clarity of your videos, how well everything is shown, and the crisp editing, I imagine a typical 15 minute video could easily take 100 hours to make.
    I have never seen videos as clear as yours are, and they are consistently easy to follow and understand. Bless you ChrisFix.

    Hey Chris, before I found your channel cars were as boring as maths. But your style of portraying cars and dealing with all the problems an average person might find and can easily solve, is great. The fact that you do what you love and share it with us is truly amazing.

    Hi Chris, you have made a top video, easy to understand and plenty of info. The best part is "no crap music" In about 3 months I will be following your video when I do the engine bay of my Volvo 245. 👍

    I painted my intake on my cobra last year and other engine parts white the motor was out. Watching this makes me wanna just take off my intake on 5.0 and paint it red too. That engine came out sweet bro.
