Just a safety warning, some vehicles have a capacitor for the airbag circuit that can hold voltage for up to 30 minutes after the battery is disconnected. Don't want anybody getting killed from an unintended airbag deployment 👍 Always follow manufacturer specified steps for removing your airbag
Write-off doesn't mean it's free, especially when you (instead parent entity) are the one handling all the costs of business. All it means is that it's taxed less, and even that still depends depending on type of expense and specific industry.
But it takes a huge chunk off something which probably wasn't very expensive to start out with. Sounds like tax laws are more complex in the US, ours are pretty simple, here I'd get around 45% of the cost of a non-asset/amortized business expense off my tax bill - 30% of earnings and 15% off consumer taxes (GST) - plus there are some other bits and pieces like accident compensation that come off wages that would make it a little more than this.
Hey Chris an easy way to reverse engineer that steering wheel cover is with the old one. Since yours came off in an easy manner if you add a little bit of steam to the old on and flatten it on you can actually just trace the old covers pattern onto the new material and it will have an even tighter fit to the wheel. Also for the seam when you stitch both ends together instead of knotching out in the rubber on the wheel if you press the seam open it will lay flush without having to remove any rubber. You can usually press a seam open with an iron. If the material you are working with should not be ironed directly use a low heat setting on an Iron and a piece of cotton cloth on top the press it open. This step does take a little more effort however the front stitching where the seam is will look really smooth and clean with the added work. If you ever tackle any more upholstery just remember to press open your seams after you sew them. This just helps all the seams to lay flat and flush, if you are doing a top stitch on anything you can also top stitch after you press the seam and this will help the material look super clean and flush. Enjoy :D

Awesome video like always! I noticed that when you peeled off the old leather from the steering wheel, it looked like it had been glued all underneath before they stitched it closed. Wouldn't it have also been a good idea to add glue all around in the inside of the new leather just so that later down the road it doesn't become loose?
The glue was for the rubber. The glue I used on the spokes is plenty to "hold it in place" but in reality, the stitches hold it in place. That thing isnt budging!
Don't worry Chris "it looks professional like I took it somewhere and got it done " bro honestly half the crooks out there doing steering wheel repair skip all those steps to hurry and get paid instead of going the extra mile to give it a longer life bro you are 100% the most professional person I've ever seen hope you respond to this hence 4yr old video still a hit cheers 🥂
I've watched so many Chris Fix videos and I never subscribed...shame on me. This video made me subscribe. Not because I plan on recovering my steering wheel, but because the detail, and instruction is spot on. No glossing over things. And paying attention and instructing those little details makes all the difference to how the job comes out. Chris deserves every subscription. He earns them.
Nicely done I have years of experience doing upholstery only done maybe a hand full of them or so two tips to make it not only a little tighter but cleaner edges on your stitching is to roll the edge before you stitch it together that little extra tightness helps keep the vinyl in place over the years and 3m contact cement will hold the edges down better and gets stronger over time as upholstery glue like that will deteriorate over time
I'd really love to see a remake of this video where you add a heating element to the steering wheel. I don't even know if that's possible, but if it is, I'd love to know how to do it!

I'm happy just to learn how to straighten a steering wheel. Nice.
Usually you need to align the car's toe alignment.
If the steering wheel has never been removed before and it is crooked while driving straight, you have an alignment problem. Don't do this to straighten your steering wheel and instead, get your alignment checked.
Actually, it can be wonky from manufacturer. On pre-2009 Korean cars, it was surprisingly common..
It really depends on the car. I was hoping to do a little adjustment when I replaced my steering wheel, but the steel pegs coming out of the clockspring suggested otherwise.
if your steering wheel is off you should look at the tie rods/ tie rod ends and other suspension components, you may also want to see about having the vehicle aligned. i recommend shops like Firestone complete auto care that offer lifetime alignments. so that if you ever have the problem again you don't have to pay again. alignments can be expensive depending on the area and type of vehicle.

Wow, what a great how-to! This is definitely something that you don’t find many tips on. Thanks Chrisfix!
Chrisfix mechanic of the YEAR!!
AMAZING YOU ARE
Damn Chris, how many more talents do you have man? Lol
this is my second video i have watched, your teaching and attention to detail leaving no questions is just as impressive
I honestly haven't seen a video more prefect.
Thanks a lot
Awesome video like always!
I noticed that when you peeled off the old leather from the steering wheel, it looked like it had been glued all underneath before they stitched it closed. Wouldn't it have also been a good idea to add glue all around in the inside of the new leather just so that later down the road it doesn't become loose?
The glue was for the rubber. The glue I used on the spokes is plenty to "hold it in place" but in reality, the stitches hold it in place. That thing isnt budging!
Ummm im kinda addicted to your vids even duh i dont iven hav a car lol
Thanks! I am glad you are enjoying them!
Romualdo Fausto me too
How Old are you

ChrisFix Sorry Chris, I know my joke wasn't sew funny . . . . . .
That's tearable, it seams like you're doing it just for the shear fun of it. Anyone got any more material?

YourSoulReaper Gaming Submarine it is ;) time to wait for the next video
You want a safe space?
I tried this, my airbag exploded, broken jaw.. but heck, my steering wheel looks lit af!
It's only lit because of the head trauma, that's actually stars you're still seeing
Really!?!?!?!..hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...
liar
the cake is a lie
You clearly don't know how an airbag is deployed...
You're the Bob Ross of car repair

all good intentions aside, he would be the last to trust with something like that.
Nicely done I have years of experience doing upholstery only done maybe a hand full of them or so two tips to make it not only a little tighter but cleaner edges on your stitching is to roll the edge before you stitch it together that little extra tightness helps keep the vinyl in place over the years and 3m contact cement will hold the edges down better and gets stronger over time as upholstery glue like that will deteriorate over time
Thanks and thanks for the tips!
I'd really love to see a remake of this video where you add a heating element to the steering wheel. I don't even know if that's possible, but if it is, I'd love to know how to do it!
When you dont even have a drivers licence and still watching these videos. You know. Just in case
Exactly! Now you know for when you do get your car!
For when you get your AE86
@@chrisfix when next drift event
@@chrisfix Man I am 14 years old but I realy love cars I don't have a car , I didn't drive before , I don't have the permission to have a license yet but I loved you because it is the best channel about cars I had ever seen ❤❤
Goes into better description than most people do in other videos, clearly the best of the best right here. 🤷♂️
I read 'commitment' underneath, that's the word here, magnificent what effort and dedication you put in this instructive video.
Thanks John!
You're welcome, when it's good, it has to be said. I, personally, wouldn't have the patience to do what you're doing..
