  • Instead of installing an expensive car alarm system or using ineffective methods to prevent your car from getting stolen, learn how to install an inexpensive, hidden kill switch. simplisafe.com/dreamcar
    This kill switch is easy to install and anyone can do it at home with basic tools. It can also work along with your car's current alarm system. How it works is it cuts the power to the fuel pump so you cannot jump start the car, hot wire it, or even push start it. In order to steal the car you need to tow it! It is better than a batter quick disconnect because your computer wont restart and you wont lose your radio stations.

      Chris what about a video on how to protect your sideview from being stolen. I know of a lot of case where the mirror itself was stolen not the housing. I saw a company that sells very nice looking protector that cover the border of the mirror so that you cant pull them out but they cost 200 dollars. I really liked this kill switch video. This will definitely be my next project.

    This is gold. My dad used to do this to his cars by using the cigarette lighter. The car wouldn't start unless the cigarette lighter was pushed in. The thing I like about the fuel pump method is that the thief doesn't know for sure if there's a kill switch - there could just be something else wrong with the car. And the repeated attempts at turning it over make a lot of noise, which is when they get introduced to your baseball bat.

    • @badboyz6584
      @badboyz6584 9 месяцев назад +78

    From an old Air Force electronics teacher and electronics technician, just to add a small bit to your comprehensive presentation: We always had to read aloud a "caution" about probing connectors. If you've never probed a connector with multimeter leads, it's possible to damage the connector. Just do this part with a little extra care so as not to damage the connector. Excellent video - thanks!

      My 1986 Vauxhall Nova had a distributor and points, so I broke into the 12v supply to the coil and installed a switch and capacitor to earth, so the engine would crank but there'd be no high tension supply to the sparkplugs. When I finish rebuilding my 1970s Land Rover I'll be installing something similar. The only downside is both vehicles have mechanical lift pumps, so cranking the engine without starting will flood the engine.

    As a professional auto mechanic, I got to see several different "kill switch" installations but the most ingenius theft prevention did NOT include an aftermarket switch of any kind. It was NOT a kill switch but a START PREVENTION system. The owner had the starter relay connected to the HIGH BEAM side of the dimmer switch so the only time the starter would engage was when the HIGH BEAMS were turned on! If done properly, I would challenge ANYONE to find out why the car would NOT start!

    This is a great idea but could be implemented in a better way: add a 'momentary' push-to-make switch in the crank (or security) circuit. This way, it is automatically 'armed' when the motor is shut down (you don't need to remember to throw the kill switch). But moreover it avoids the potential danger of the fuel pump accidentally being stopped while you are driving (at which point you might miss your power steering and servo'ed brakes (if auto)).

      You can still win. GPS welded into the frame with 1/4" steel plate and a separate battery that is charged by the main battery. GPS receivers draw very little power and you can easily run it for over a month even after they chopped the car. Show up with extra keys and buddies, take it in broad daylight as you can prove ownership and nobody else can. This avoids fighting for your car and the theif would have to identify themselves to stop you.
      A siren welded into the frame on an "always on" circuit, that activates permanently once a certain wire is unplugged. Any random wire will do, try to pick one on a valuable part that can be split where it isn't seen.
      Nobody ever chops a frame, and this makes it so they have to cut the frame (extremely loud) to make it stop. They'll dump the car ASAP or run
      My dad's Austin mini got chopped in his work parking lot while he was working. A loud noise would have saved his car and given him a chance to see how many people fit in the trunk :P

      @@FletcherHillier eh easier to hook up a tracker to a fuse tap, just pop off a panel in the footwell and drop in in a hole in the frame, even just leave it there without bothering with the frame at all it isnt like the repo guys are looking for a tracker

    I find a good habit to get into when adding switches is to use one male and one female connector on the switch leg wires. That way, if your switch goes bad and your stuck without tools, you can just unplug the switch and plug those wires directly to each other.
    Also, I would avoid using a style of wire loom or wire color that is blaringly different from stock appearance. Run those wires tightly against stock looms when possible. Hide em!
    Personally I like to have a bit of fun with my kill switches. Its an opportunity to get creative. My last one, I installed a 3 legged switch. One hot for pump in, one for pump out. The third leg, when switch is armed, redirects power to the horn. Someone trys to hotwire the car and they blast the horn instead. Probably won't stick around to figure it out after that.
