@Craig W it's sad because they couldn't diagnose what was wrong so they just threw new parts on it. If it aint broke dont fix it, but they didnt even know what was broke....I know lots of younger, or inexperienced vehicle owners would do the same thing.

Chris, it is amazing how much effort you put into these videos. This could have easily been a “how to fix your timing belt” but no you decided to put in the extra effort to show all the symptoms of a non running engine. Simply amazing! Never change man, keep up the amazing work!
For real. The LITERALLY first time I went to a mechanic because I hat misfires, he told me it was most likely the distributor and or sparkplugs. He told me it was difficult to do and all in all would cost me about 300 bucks. We made out an appointment and the very same day I made my research to find out that the parts if I bought them myself would cost me 70 tops. Not to mention how easy it actually was to replace. Sufficed to say I didn't show up to that appointment
@@barneystinson6331 Good for you! Not everyone has the gumption to research something like that, let alone take on the task of performing the work themselves. I learned to work on cars not out of interest, but out of necessity; I had no money to pay a mechanic. With time, it did end up being something I enjoyed, and similar to Chris' reaction here, when you fix something and you get to see/hear it run...it is euphoric.
The thing I love about your videos is even if you don't need a certain fix, you still tell us how to fix it. It would be so easy for you to skip something because your car doesn't need it, but the fact you tell us the signs and things to try for symptoms your car isn't showing is awesome!
Epic! I did these exact steps on my new E30 Touring last month. It had been sat for 6 years. It was a bad ECU in my case, making only three injectors work. Tested LITERALLY everything before swamping out the ECU. This video is so helpful to someone who doesn't know. Cheers Chris!

Shotgun diagnosis is rampant in the industry. Lots of techs out there aren't that good at diagnosis, but they know how to change out parts. Thankfully you sound like one of the good guys
It’s so nice to see Chris genuinely excited when he fixed the car because I have the same reaction when I finally fix something that’s been taking awhile, best feeling ever
I think what really excites him the most, is that using logical deduction and knowledge about how an engine works, and what are the possible failure. Applying theory and getting result, unlike the mechanic which just replaced some random potential failure elements things, is the real reward.
After having taken apart and rebuilt a 2.0L Ford Focus motor, I can say that the convenient access to the timing belt tensioner and crank rotation/balancer is the stuff dreams are made of. Wish chain-driven engines could somehow engineer that.
Honestly I’ve been in automotive since I was 13, worked at a few different shops and dealerships, but the way it’s explained in this video is this 1. Informative 2. Clear and simple to the point 3. Keep up the good work man your teachings is very professional simple and gives people a better understanding on many different areas that you go over on vehicles if that’s mechanical diagnostics to body repair for the at home joe A+ rating in my book
@@geoffreycasey875 The comment I was looking for, Chris was extremely lucky that the valves never contacted, as you know it's an interference engine. 9/10 times when that timing belt skips a sprocket tooth it's game over.. The same thing happened to my dad 20+ years ago with a 92 Subaru wagon. He spent at least 4k on repairs and couldn't get it to run. He sold it to a friend of his for 300 dollars because he was sure he was selling a dead car. Next week he saw his friend driving the car and found out a $7 part at the local auto store is all it took. . . . My dad still talks about it today. 😞

@@chrisfix Soapy Wooder actually went into a running gag between me and my brother during working on our cars. Your advices and tipps are great :D - Best greetz!
Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.
@@cipherthedemonlord8057 I agree and disagree. They generally aren't out to rip you off but wind up doing so because they are just parts replacers and not diagnosticians or actual technicians. If you follow the five steps before replacing parts, consider yourself smart hahaha
I towed my Miata to a spec Miata shop when it broke down, to do a timing belt job. They did it wrong, broke my camshaft, and replaced the camshaft wrong too (caps were out of order). They sent the car back to me after 3 months not running, and charged me an arm and a leg for their work. If anybody knows Miatas, it's them, right? Nope, they failed. I took it apart myself and had it running in 2 days. The new cam was unfortunately beyond saving (it was scored to the point that is was binding to the caps even in the right order) and it broke in half on the highway, taking the head with it. I sold the car with a blown motor. What did I learn from that? It's best to work on your own car, Chrisfix style! I don't trust anybody with my cars anymore, so I do everything myself so I know exactly how every nut and bolt on my car was treated.
That mechanic needs to be called out. Talk about not having a clue. He can't even help the owner keep the car maintained. That crankcase is ridiculous.

If a “Professional” mechanic couldn’t figure this out, they’re proooobably not a professional. As always, fantastic video Chris! Your content is excellent! Love your channel man!
I was thinking the same thing. Replacing the distributor, computer, and coil before even checking the timing belt? Yeah that guy weaseled his way into that shop.
So many so-called "professional" mechanics aren't real mechanics. They're just part swappers. I've met a lot of them. Guys like Chris are like car detectives.
Take it to a mechanic, doesn't get fixed, nobody knows what's wrong. Bring it to ChrisFix, within an hour it's running. Wow, you never fail to impress me dude way to go!
Agreed, I was thinking that the mechanic that had worked on it wasn't very good as soon as the video started. There are a lot of mechanics that are just parts changers, they don't actually diagnose the issue, they just replace parts hoping they replace the right one. I will say that timing can be an easy one to gloss over, because most engines aren't non-interference and the engine grenades if the timing slips. Luckily for this Honda that engine seems to be a non-interference engine and was able to be saved!
Oblivion , Unfortunately, he probably did, but decided to jack up the bill first by doing a bunch of unnecessary work. Sad reality of a lot of people in the industry unfortunately.
I don t agree. I am a professional. His video is just perfect. Some really good explanations. The mechanic of your neigbour didn t know what he was doing. Why changing the distributor and the computer? I can understand for the coil maybe he found the spark weak. If it wasn't the timing belt. It could probably be the timing of the spark. Cause of the pmh sensor or the target. I had the target a couple of time. Some strange things on it. À really good job Chris 👍
@@michelleobama3013 hey sorry my English is bad. I've genuinely got a kind of fear about working on my own cars, even though I don't mind repairing electronics. Seeing Chris be so excited, and how logically and plainly he makes everything, it really does inspire me to try. At one point, I did try to change out the oil on my own car, but didn't have the leverage to get the oil plug out. I ended up stripping it and had to go to a mechanic. I've never changed my own oil. I'm hoping that maybe if I keep watching this channel, I can finally give it another shot. I really want to be more responsible with the vechiels that I drive and know how they work.
It might not have been your fault. Sometimes it is so tight on there from other places, it basically traps you. I'd recommend getting a 1/2 inch drive mechanics set, which will help you get way more leverage going forward. Just watch over-tightening it. Don't be discouraged!
Put a wrench on the end it your socket wrench before you try if you need more leverage it basically makes the handle longer causing you to need less effort to turn the bolt but be careful it’s like having super strength lol
@@paulstill3630 Haha, yeah. The place I took it too recommended that after the fact. It was kind of frustrating because some of the material I had read didn't mention that as a possibility. The car place also said a length of pipe could work too. My problem was that I had very little funds and didn't have extra wrenches or tools available that easily. I finally invested in a full wrench set and am going to give it another go after the ground thaws.

When your neighbor is a mechanic, and still drove miles away to get your car fixed... I feel bad for them lol!
@Craig W it's sad because they couldn't diagnose what was wrong so they just threw new parts on it. If it aint broke dont fix it, but they didnt even know what was broke....I know lots of younger, or inexperienced vehicle owners would do the same thing.
@@jsihavealotofplaylists I've learned over the years, If I can't figure it out take it to someone with a computer, Mechanics want a grand for an hours worth of work and 200$ worth of parts off a guess of what it is.

ChrisFix hi Chris! Big fan for about 5 years
The car clock went from 4am to about 6am, more like 2 hours including filming.
Sad to see how shitty some mechanics are
Most just want money for no work. Typical of many nowadays sadly.
Yeah what a disappointment it can be
Oh ultimate making ! Je ne m'attendais pas à te voir là !

I am amazed he was able to capture the injector clicks. Chris's videography is top notch but that is simply awesome.

Honestly I’ve been in automotive since I was 13, worked at a few different shops and dealerships, but the way it’s explained in this video is this
1. Informative
2. Clear and simple to the point
3. Explained ln very simple detail and what the job requires
He’s literally taught me a few things as well and maintained in my memory for future projects definitely one of the best I seen and that’s coming from a guy who’s worked next to master techs and body repair men. Keep up the good work man your teachings is very professional simple and gives people a better understanding on many different areas that you go over on vehicles if that’s mechanical diagnostics to body repair for the at home joe A+ rating in my book
Do you honestly believe the belt was the problem? If it so far out of timing the valves would be as bent as liberace..
@@geoffreycasey875 The comment I was looking for, Chris was extremely lucky that the valves never contacted, as you know it's an interference engine. 9/10 times when that timing belt skips a sprocket tooth it's game over.. @@chrisfix Soapy Wooder actually went into a running gag between me and my brother during working on our cars. Your advices and tipps are great :D - Best greetz!

What could be the cause of the slack timing?
Appeared to be a loose timing belt tensioner. He shows tightening belt tension and then the nut to hold tensioner is tightened securely. Good thing it was a non-interference engine otherwise would be valve or valve and piston damage. Makes timing belt checks/changes very important on these types of engines.

Not all but mechanics 9 times out of 10 try and rip you off speaking from experience and stories.

That is one bad mechanic he didn't even check the car before adding parts.
I had a misfire code. My mechanic did not check or diagnose spark plug or coil. He replaced parts only. :(
Oblivion , Unfortunately, he probably did, but decided to jack up the bill first by doing a bunch of unnecessary work. Sad reality of a lot of people in the industry unfortunately.

Amazing the money you could save it you get a competent mechanic that wants to save a customer money rather than fix issues that don't exists and rip the customer off
I've genuinely got a kind of fear about working on my own cars, even though I don't mind repairing electronics.
Wrong size wrench/socket will do that to much leverage and over tightening will as well I think that was you problem

When a self taught mechanic who holds recorder and videos his obsession in fixing cars does better than your trusted mechanic. That's Chris Fix for ya. Don't forget he married his breaker bar 5 years ago.
Why the breaker bar?
@@Gtee7900 Behind every successful man there is a woman. His humble beginnings started with budget tools. Here he is today.
>Don't forget he married his breaker bar
Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today
To get through this thing called a breakdown
Electric word breakdown it means you're stuck and that's a mighty terrible thing
But I'm here to tell you there's something else
The junk yard
A world of never ending car parts
You can always see the spark, day or night
So when you call up that mechanic on the wrong side of town
You know the one - Mr Diagnosis By Replacement
Instead of asking him what his shop rate is
Ask him how he does his diagnostics
'Cause in this driveway
Things are much harder without a lift
In this driveway
You're on your own
I believe he married medium strength thread locker

After watching this video, a few weeks later I bought the same make\model & year. It helped tremendously, I was able to know what to lo
ok for & how to solve the problem. Chris's videos are phenomenal, informative, to the point,And above all else the camera is not shakey or of bad quality. Myself and I believe tons of other people appreciate what you do. Thanks
did you wear your Chris fix Valeida gloves to?
lets be honest, it was a Honda so it did like half the work by itself already
Love how this comment is 1 week old and He still gave you heart
Joel Cardoso Thats Chris for you.
DieselJS I think you mean crish... lmao
Well Honda’s never die like my grandpa has a honda from 1960 and he said if it dies I can sell it and it never dies like we went through a fucking lake and it shut off and 30 mins later it started
zeroh what? It’s Chris...
anyone owning a car should see this video. It shows all of the most important basics of an engine and how to fix it. Awesome!
His neighbor watching from his window be like:👁👄👁
Edit: 2 years later and it's the top comment with so many likes... dangg
and after finding out what the problem was he was like well shit
my mechanics an idiot...... He's Fired!!!!!!
😂
after seeing the engine start the neighbour peeping through the window be like : Hello 911, someone stole my car 🚗
I'm going to mechanic school starting tomorrow.
And after Chris changes the timing belt and oil, the neighbor is going to say, can ... can I get my car back? LoL
this is one of the best car videos ive ever seen. Hands down
yes true that! Suspense climax everything.
Man i was really excited , Chris fix really nailed this
Now ChrisFix gets to do the first oil change the car has EVER had.
J Smith no joking. That crust under the value cover is just wow.
So disgusting 🤣
Do you think the same "mechanic" that did his timing belt was also charging him for 3000 miles oil changes?
i think its honda standard or head is leak thats why dirt inside
Who knows how old the oil is, he said the car sat for 4 years and it was probably overdue before that.
Definitely hands down best mechanic I’ve seen I enjoy how you thoroughly explain with detail how to fix certain things and how to go about it the pros and the cons and what to look for. How to diagnose a problem
I just enjoy your channel. I appreciate the videos man. Definitely learn a lot.
Just finished wathcing this chris . That my friend was phenominal . you are a true master of your craft.
Thanks a lot!
Mechanic: idk pal heres a few hundred dollars worth of shit i replaced. Chrisfix: hold my soapy wooder
As I read it I heard Chris' voice
Holy cow that's funny
@@rykerolson8889 Bro,when I read this I couldnt stop laughing.
Bill V I was dead laughing so hard 😂😂😂
Bill V haha made my day bud 😂
Imagine Chris about to travel and the plane breaksdown. Chris pulls out his camera : "hey guys Chrisfix here, today I will show you how to take care of a airplane engine so you can be out in the air in no time"
no cause piston engines are different from jet turbine engines
you gotta love how the mechanic was to dumb to check the timing belt instead of replacing parts without figuring out what was the problem first
@@raven4k998 you say he was "dumb", but he got hundreds of dollars being paid to swap parts which were probably fine - he probably wont have a return customer, but he most certainly does not care.
@@stephenwilkinson1254 thus he's Dumb
you can be Dumb and still be a mechanic not a very good mechanic but still a mechanic non the less
This comment is the best so far lol
On the runway using common hand tools
My mitsubishi wouldnt start at a wendys drive thru, the guys working there gave me a push into the parking lot. Spent an hour trying to figure out the problem, searching up RUclips videos and then found this. And it worked.
Dude thank you so much!
which mitsubishi? The mirage? because I have one
Tell this to your neighbor. Then if he doesnt want it anymore just donate it to some one who doesnt have a car. Thank you for this. I am not scared anymore to check and DIY my first car.
Thanks Chris!
Im from Philippines btw !! TAGAY !!!!
Mindanao area here. Haha

ChrisFix: this is the moment to do some safety glasses so you dont get fuel in your eyes
Me: *gets fuel in mouth*
how did you do that ????
XD
There is an ancient art which few have mastered, which is called...
Closing your mouth
That just always makes me work faster 😎
Holds mouth wide open
The fact that I can watch these in my bed, nowhere near my car, and retain the information almost verbatim is actually insane. This guy is an amazing teacher. I can’t wait to go look under my hood tomorrow morning lmao
@random guy on youtube nah, we ended up deducing it was an electrical problem (some rodent got under the hood and chewed someshit) so I had to take it to the dealer to find the wire :(
90k miles on it and it’s a Honda, man Chris fix you deserve a beer.
You should make some more videos getting it all cleaned up and looking good! Then sell it, maybe set it up on here, I know I need a daily driver to save miles on my truck.
that would be awesome. i honestly hate the 1 video per month thing lol
Facts
If you want more videos find his house and break his cars, he'll have to fix them and he would probably make videos.
That shakiness of excitement is the best feeling ever! Especially when its a car that didnt run for 4 years!!!
It is! Feels soo good to get something like this working
I've had those shakes from an 85 Supra.
Your neighbor needs a different mechanic.
Diagnosis by replacement is not a sign of a good mechanic.
The same applies to those greasy fucks at the Apple store. My sister's iPhone had colorful lines all over the screen and the genius bar told her she had to get a new logic board which would cost almost as much as a new phone. I opened it up and it turns out one of the ribbon cables was loose, because I pushed it down and the phone works fine now.
CheekyGoose facts the Genius Bar is a absolute scam designed to milk as much money out of clueless customers as possible. Add it together with the fact that even opening a iPhone voids the warranty and Apple is making millions off of clueless customers
Correction: your neighbor needs YOU (Chris) as the (new) mechanic. Lol
